  1. Not quite clear what your asking. If you are talking about files to edit with? If that is the case: If you have the horsepower in your system it's always better to edit with native files if you can. Are you asking about archiving? I would suggest the industry standard ProRes or DNxHR for that.

  2. Dammit :( Yup, time to sell my 50-150. Keeping the camera and buying some spare batteries, thank god it also runs off USB power so It's still usable when the batteries die.

Edit: Keeping the camera itself until it dies for video, but no longer can I rely on it as one of my primary photo cameras.

  3. Even with the crop on the D500, if it gives me the D750's DR and color in 4K with good RS performance I will buy it. Hell just give me excellent 1080p and I'll still buy it for the still capability.

  4. Bought a Nikon 17-35/2.8 with a busted AF for very little money. Since I never use AF I like it :)

Might have to look for more lenses in that state.

You can get a broken AF version of the 28-70 if you look around. It's a heavy lens but optically excellent.

  5. Marco.

    1) I was clearly describing the 1080p in my post. That is the question I was answering.

    2) In your shots, especially the cute baby, there is a huge amount of compression evident in the shadows. Especially the skin tone on the arm and on the right side of his face in shadow. For web at 720p it will look fine, but not even close to good in 4K.

I love my NX1, but lowlight is a significant weakness.

  6. It's been awhile since I posted here, but I am in the market (in a month or so) for a new camera....and I am very intrigued by the NX1......Ilove what I am seeing in terms of video, and I also love the stills. I am hearing that samsung is about to abandon their camera lines....but I Still feel like this camera is a monster

Bang for buck the best image your can buy. Doesn't matter if Samsung goes out of the camera business, the NX1 will still be a great piece of kit.

  7. could someone please post a quick comparison clip of nx1 1080p vs 4k.

I have the comparison footage, unfortunately can't put it up till next week(out of state). I will say the colors are the same excellent quality and the rolling shutter performance is astounding, as in better than any camera aside from Global Shutter good.

It has two problems 1)Moire: Thankfully not unusably bad, there is no color banding around the moire. But it is there. 2) Bad low light performance, you don't want to go past 1800 ISO or the footage turns to mush.

  8. Under the Gamma selection select Gamma C or Gamma DR and push up on the rear scroll wheel. this brings up saturation, sharpness, color balance, contrast, and a overall color cast adjustment options.

You can also modify these options under standard Gamma by going to the picture profile menu under photos and editing them as well.

  9. This list inspired me to revisit Sony's A6000 as I noticed it not only gained XAVC-S with a recent firmware update but also just dropped significantly in price - a $400 24MP camera with XAVC-S that can become full frame with a speed booster has perked my interest.

Looking into this camera now I noticed something interesting: Andrew, your first A6000 post with footage (http://www.eoshd.com/2014/04/surprise-sony-alpha-a6000-video-mode-huge-improvement/) has a downloadable AVCHD clip straight from the card that you were initially impressed with .. this short clip looks infinitely better than any other clip i've seen shot with this camera (resolution / color / codec), INCLUDING future A6000 footage you posted when you became less happy with the camera's image.. I can't seem to figure out why.

Did you have a pre-production camera that was somehow higher quality? I'm baffled. When I initially saw the footage in the above link I was sold on the A6000 for $400 thinking it could be a great B-cam to my A7S.. and then I saw every other clip out there shot with it.....

I had a A6000 for a long while and I was tempted to pick it up again after the codec upgrade. Still might. It actually had a great image, minimal rolling shutter, good detail, and I'm sure will be even better with the new codec. If only it had a microphone input on it, I probably would not have sold it.

  10. 1) 4K center of sensor readout, for a reduced rolling shutter option for 4K. Hell this is technically already in the camera with DIS, just keep that crop!

    2) Samsung's own flat profile. No messing around to find the ideal, have the engineers make one. No noise reduction in this mode.

Agree with your macroblocking, but I think a Samsung created flat profile it would fix the issue. Also wouldn't mind the 200 bitrate option for only certain cards.

  11. Hey guys im thinking about selling my Pentax Takumar prime set,  how much do you think they would be worth as a kit?

    4 lenses Takumars Non-smc so uncoated for better flares.      28mm 3.5     35mm   2.0  Legendary 50mm 1.4   and  85mm 1.9

all with zip gears from half inch rails, 77mm front threads, ef adaptors and back caps, and most importantly all declicked,

heres a pcture of them sans the 85 looks the same as the 35.

I 've had great success with these lenses they look nice, the 35 and 85 are not tack sharp wide open but they ait. I just got an otus 55 a need the funds if im going to try and complete the set.

heres a recent music video shot on them except for the ultra wide shots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gVqPkk6GEQ

Very interested in these. Are the front filter threads removable or permanently attached? Glass is still clean?

  12.

His system cannot remotely edit 4K H264 effectively. His question was whether a better GPU would help -- the answer is not sufficiently. The GPU itself cannot meaningfully accelerate encode/decode of H264, just effects. So his options are get a much more powerful system or transcode to ProRes and be prepared for the huge space and I/O increase.

This is completely false, using a GPU with CUDA takes the playback away from the CPU and puts it on the GPU. Most modern GPU have hardware H264 decode.

This is especially the case with H265 from the NX1 with the GTX960, as it uses the onboard H265 decoder on the card for playback.

  13. Mountneer I highly recommend the GTX 960 4gb version. I use it and it plays back 4K NX1 H265 files in realtime with lumetri grades on the clips. You'll love it!

Also, ignore those who say a GPU will not be as big a gain as CPU, if you get a CUDA gpu Premiere transfers the processes usually handled by the CPU to the GPU, it is a significant performance increase.

  14. I've very excited. I'm a theater projectionist so I get to test it Wednesday morning. Seeing it in 2D first, then 3D, then at our opening on Thursday night. Then a week later in the new IMAX 4K lazer projection system.

Hoping for a great film, expecting a decent one that falls below people's expectations. But I think the film is less a film and more a cultural event. Connects people of all ages. I've had 60+ year olds who have bought tickets in advance that have said this is the first film they've seen in theaters in over 10 years. Over 2000 tickets presold. This thing is a monster.
