JazzBox reacted to andy lee in Does it worth to upgrade to Zeiss Distagon?
all the Zeiss C/Y lenses are very consistant across the range of focal lengths , same Zeiss glass colours same blacks / contrast , same look , so the differance is that the 25mm is just that bit wider and the 28mm has just that bit more bokeh .....the 50mm f1.7 is brighter about 1/2 stop more than the rest of the range so if you have it at f2.8 its brighter than all the other lenses in the range at f2.8 - appart from that these are amazing lenses - same glass exactly as the Zeiss Ultra Prime and Super Speed cine lenses at at fraction of the cost

Somehow I missed this post... Sorry. But yes, I remember reading about the CRC and it really is amazing. The Minolta is equally as amazing but has a little cooler of a look to it. My copy of the Minolta is in better shape, but I can't say for sure which one I like better optically. Of course I just picked up the Tak 35mm f2 lens as well and that bastard is an awesome little lens too. I am starting to think I may just shoot future projects with a single lens. That's how much I like these... I just need a lot of projects.
Nikkor 28mm f2
Minolta 28mm f2
Super Takumar 35mm f2

That range of primes would cover pretty much everything you need and great quality. I also like the look of the 135mm 2.8, it is not supposed to be the best in the contax range but I really like it on the GH4 when shooting at a distance and you can pick it up cheap.

Maybe at some point, but focus on getting a full range of primes first. 25, 35, 50, 85 is a solid kit that'll cover basically anything.

I recently picked up the 50mm 1.7 and it is a nice piece of glass. I hope you enjoy yours!!!

JazzBox, try the contax zeiss 35-70mm, 3.5..... its super sharp and has a bit of a cult following in the stills world ... I usually use it like two primes at the short or long end plus it has a handy macro function.

I just bought my first Contax Zeiss. I picked up the 50mm 1.7 Planar. I haven't gotten a chance to test her out yet though. I recently picked up the Nikon AI 28mm f2 and I am not sure if I have ever used a nicer lens... Even with its squeaky focus ring. I also picked up the Rokkor-X 28mm f2. F2 lenses are my favorite, they just ooze cinema.

Zeiss C/Y lenses on speedboosters are a superb option I use alot , I made a full set of f2.8 Zeiss C/Y lens - yes the f2.8 versions so on the speedbooster they are f2 when fully wide open - and thats how I use them wide open , the glass in these lenses is identical formula that is in the Zeiss Super Speed cinema lenses and Zeiss Ultra Primes - the guys on RED USER have done loads of A/B tests and its identical , so for me as I like to shoot f2 max the f2.8 Zeiss C/Y lens are amazing .
Cinema quility glass at affordable prices - I went for 25, 28 35, 45, 50 , 85 . 135mm

Dear all,
after some research I found 3 nice Zeiss in Contax Yashica mount: 25 f/2.8, 25 f/2.8 and 50 f/1.7, all in mint condition.
Apart the 25, I had the other two for a bargain price, and the 50 was a new old stock.
I'm very happy with those lenses, I like them a little more then the FD I had (also super nice lenses).
Do you think there are some other lenses that it worth to have from Zeiss CY? Any zoom?
Thank you very much!

JazzBox reacted to Zak Forsman in Dog Schidt Optiks meets my BMPCC
Got a great deal on a new BMPCC during a Black Friday sale for nearly 50% off. It's my first Blackmagic camera (I have the Micro pre-ordered) and have been eager to pair it with the Trump lens set I ordered from Richard Gale. I took possession of the set a couple weeks ago and have started shooting a short film with it. I love the versatility in terms of contrast control (from standard to ultra-low) and the variety of aperture discs. The 2x and 3x ovals are my favorite. Made a quick comparison of the two here.
But this week I finally started shooting a short I've wanted to do for some time. I work professionally as a freelance editor so this project is being done as schedules allow. Shooting RAW has been an eye-opener for me. For the last year I've been trying to wrestle a GH4 into being something it just wasn't capable of. And have come to the conclusion that I should have traded 4K for color science and dynamic range a long time ago.

Well, I pre-ordered the Micro for its size and the additions of global shutter and 60p. Then in november a shop in Paris ran a sale on the Pocket for a little over $500 so i bought one knowing it would more or less match the Micro. But yeah, size and weight have been the main reason i chose it over the BMCC. I direct and serve as my own cinematographer and wanted something just heavy enough when rigged out that micro-jitters would be eliminated whenever operating it hand-held.
Here's the rabbit hole for the Dog Schidt Optiks lenses. I have a Trump58, 38 & 88 attachments, and some other custom add-ons. i also had him completely remove the mechanical aperture to increase the effectiveness of the tinted aperture inserts.

Thank you! (we use the same mini-gimbal from Jacopo I think!)

Yes, you just have to "conform", so every 24p frame will end in a 25p (and play a little faster)

Zak, your images are simply AMAZING!
I also use a GH4 and sold my BMPCC because... I'm a dumb!
I hated the poor battery life and the LCD in external shooting, but when I look BMPCC footage, even in ProRes, it is something so organic that I regret to sell it.
I think I'll probably buy a MicroCinema one, it should have a better batteries' life and hopefully a nice 60p in rolling shutter mode.
V-log is not nearly close to "cinema" setting on BlackMagic. I love my GH4 because it is so simple, so easy and overall good, but each and every time I see BM videos... I want one!

Love me some OM lenses. I have the 24mm/2.8, 35mm/2, 50mm/1.4 and 1.8, and 135mm/2.8. I've probably spent under $700 for the whole set so far.

I have the FE mount 35mm 1.4 Zeiss Distagon, and can tell you it is a truly awesome lens. But at $1600, it should be.

IMO 1980's Olympus, Canon and Nikon lenses are up the the standard of the Zeiss Contax's. A Olympus 24mm/2, 35mm/2 and 50mm/1.8 can be had for the same price as a single zeiss 28mm/2 and perform just was well. IMO. the 35mm/2 is a very very good value lens. i think adapted to EOS mount with cheap adaptors and with a speed booster 0.64x these will be a wonderful lens set for gh4

I'm not giving back the Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 Pro.
He also sells the Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 Pro, but I think 12-40 and some primes would serve me better then 2 zoom

JazzBox got a reaction from TheRenaissanceMan in Does it worth to upgrade to Zeiss Distagon?
Thank you very much!!
For sure I'm going to sell the 25 f/1.4 and the 45 f/1.8 since I barely used them 3 times in 1 year while I use the 12-40 also for personal photo.
If the FD are better (or not so worser) then Zeiss ZE I could also remain with those lenses... I could make an effort just in case those Zeiss looks like the CP.2 or if they are at least a lot better then my humble FD... otherwise I could give back all and take the Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 Pro, in order to have 2 zoom and call it a day.
It sound a little crazy to me, since I do love to shoot with manual primes, but... do you think it could be a possibility or it is just stupid?
(the shop also sell a mint A7s for 1600... but at that point I have to give back all my gear and buy some other lenses... He also sells Samyang video lenses but I had not great experience with a 10mm)
Anyway I shot 99% of the "prison" part of this video with the Olympus 12-40 and it does not looks that bad to me, for that reason I don't exclude a priori the 40-150.
Thanks richg101!
Other then Zeiss, what you would suggest for GH4?
