Chrille reacted to Al Dolega in Return of the Crop King, but only for RF? (Sigma 17-40 f1.8)
https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-aps-c-shooters-rejoice-sigma-to-launch-the-rf-17-40mm-f-1-8-and-rf-12mm-f-1-4/
Remember those like 5 years where everyone had the 18-35mm f1.8? Seems like this would be the successor.
Full frame is of course dominant now, so this wouldn't be as omnipresent as the 18-35, but could still be a very popular choice, at least if it comes to other mounts too.

That doesn't match the usual style (FX3 is more expensive than A7S III, FX30 is more expensive than A6700) - and if $2,500 is MSRP for A7 IV, selling the cine version for around $200 more is right in line with those other models.
If I were choosing between A7 IV and FX2, FX2 would win hands-down. I'd definitely spend $200 for the flippy EVF. But then I might have my head checked because the Z6 III + Sony FE adapter would still cost less, use any Sony lenses, and record 6K full sensor width video internally with decent RS (and with a raw option!) - and going from 24 to 33 megapixels for still photos is... 🤷♂️
(Looking for a B Cam to FX6 that can also take some nice still photos, it's totally fine and people aren't crazy for buying it - but it's just not the choice that I would make right now)
-----
The other thing that seems interesting with this release is that it seems to suggest that Sony don't have a lot of other new bodies in the pipeline. If they do, this release would seem to be an attempt to grab cash from people who are still willing to buy the older sensor and will be annoyed when cameras with the new sensor are released.
Otherwise, if Sony have a bunch of shiny new mirrorless cameras coming soon and supporting better-than-4k recording, etc, why release this one now? The competition is releasing cool mirrorless bodies with superior capabilities and Sony is re-releasing a camera from 2022, but stuffed into a different body. If they keep sitting on these models for another year, we might see the production pendulum swing back to Canon (or Nikon, if they write "RED" on some upcoming mirrorless model and make no other changes from one of their existing cameras).

It's 3200 EUR here in Germany compared to the A7 IV for 2100. This could have been an amazing camera if it came out a few years ago, now it's just kinda 'whatever' with the hardware limitations.
Personally I couldn't life with the rolling shutter, the PetaPixel video has shown well in some shots the kinda crazy wobble/jelly you can get shooting 24p handheld (same reason I hated my A6300 back in the day). But the real disrespectful part is the resolution of the display, that's like tech from 10 years ago with not even half the pixels of the FX30 screen.
I find the form factor great and if this would have had a sensor more like the Z6III / S1II it would have been an amazing option.

Here it is, the camera i have wanted 5 years ago!

A strange time: so many options: a cheap red komodo for that indie movie, a supersmall canon camera with 10 bit codec - things everyone would have dreamt of 5-8 years ago.

Might also be that they dropped the 4k Cinema price so they can sell them off.
A OG Pocket siced 4K o 6K cam would be fun.

One that would be interesting is if they took the original UMP12K Super35 sensor and put it in the Pocket 6K Pro body.
Though I suspect they would need to add too much power to make it viable.
I’m hopeful that they have a firmware upgrade for the Micro Studio 4K G2 that allows the use of the USB-C monitor they make for the PYXIS.
Or at least one that switches on the Bluetooth module we all know that’s in it but they inexplicably won’t let us use!

Slashing the price to clear the old stock out?
Might be hints at a new replacement coming in 2025?
Perhaps the Pyxis with a MFT mount and the same sensor in it.
Maybe with some other cost saving measure? (cheaper/smaller monitor?)
If they could release "a Pyxis MFT" sigificantly cheaper than their FF version, say for $1750, then maybe that explains clearing out the BMD Pocket bodies.

Chrille got a reaction from Ninpo33 in X-M5 New Fujifilm Creator Focused Camera
I recieved the camera approx. 3 weeks ago, i did not have much time to test it and decided to send it back.
- The body is made of plastic but the size and the weight are fantastic. Funny how different it feels to take pictures and videos of the family with such a small camera (compared to the a74).
- On the video side it feels great, feelings of the original blackmagic pocket come up. It's really fun to use for such a small camera body.
Of course it is winter and i was only able to take pictures inside: for that use case the camera is worse to the a74 by far. Not sure wether it is fair to compare those two though...
So overall i believe that this is a really fun camera - i will just not be able to invest the time to learn a new system right now, also @Andrew Reids praise of the S9 did not help as well.
But it's defenetly a great camera for every day carry, holidays and traveling. Not sure wether it's the right thing for my use case of music videos, short films and family pictures though...

Another year another christmas short: I am looking for additional cheap ways to light the set: So far i am using a blue light for the background and little ballon lights (leds to be oput into a ballon (warm white) and small fairy lights (also warm white). Maybe you have an idea? Lego lights are beautiful but expensive. Maybe someone has experience shooting minitures? Would be happy if you could show it to all the children you know...

The balloon lights that I got have replaceable batteries - so at least that saves the e-waste of throwing away the entire unit! The batteries not rechargeable, though, so it's still not ideal.
The Black Magic version looks nice! And agreed that the blues are a bit nicer and less skewed toward purple!

Yes, sadly the batteries are more expensive than the lights itself.

Thanks for the reply!
yes the ballon lights are great - feels strange to throw them away after the batteries are finished - as i want to move into stop motion usb powered lights would be much better…
It‘s super fun though to light with those little lights. Am thinking about building miniature deformers etc.
I am 100% with you regarding the blues- i am still having problems colorcorrecting the sony blues which tend to look very „video“ like…
Shot the 2022 Version on blackmagic and found the colours much more pleasing - but i did not know about the ballon lights back then…

Chrille reacted to eatstoomuchjam in Little Christmas film
Balloon lights would have been my first suggestion and you already found them. I just shot a short film and for part of it, I needed a tiny light to fit inside a dessicated/taxidermied bird head (to show that it contained a demon's soul, as these things do) and it was perfect for that.
Short of wiring up your own stuff, I'm not sure you'll find a lot of small battery-powered lights that are smaller than what you already found. If it were me, I'd use a very cool white light for the ambient light vs blue - right now, the nighttime vibe might be a little oversold, but otherwise that's all very cute! Good job!

Chrille reacted to tomastancredi in Camera advice. What after a EOS R? (and a RicohGR)
good question. Colour rendition, depth and resolution. Actually I still struggle to identifiy what specs would make a better camera and definettelly not totally objective. But I love the raw files that come out of my ricoh GR. I also feel like the benefits of a higher megapixel camera is not only cropping, but is there a perception of resolution increase (not digital sharpening)? I am seriously asking this. I have not done or seen comparison but maybe the A7C and S5 24mpx are sharper than my EOS R ? so what comes into play? I would like to have a sharp camera for digital visualization( so no pixel peeping, rarelly printing, no pixel peeping) in that case, did you see the benefit of a A7R over say the S5?
the used A7RII is so cheap now, almost for 600 pounds. I considered buyint it for stills and an xm-5 for video
Thanks for all other considerations. ZF looks amazing, a bit bulkier for me though, checked one at the store yesterday.
c70 most of times now because of canon colors and sometimes even using the EOS R as a second camera. But also BMPC6K
I usually have good EF glass at my disposal and only own one 35mm 1.8 RF and one sigma 24. 1.8 EF
Do you like it so far?
yes, makes sense, I am looking at it, not sure if more megapixels make sense for me though if I am not cropping, no pixel peeping and not often printing. If it does increase the perpection of resolution than I would be in.People say 24 megapixels is "enough", I wonder if it is as good as - if you are not printring croping etc..
if it doesnt make such a difference I should either put more money on the a7CII or
10 Bit would make me rent much less defintelly. Colours make a huge difference for me and I do see a drastic difference. I could even shoot 1080p. I see the s5 can shoot beautifully in 1080 10bit, and I know I could achieve a good result with sony 8 bit slog 2, I have done that, but it would not be for any kind of shooting since it is more demanding. But then, if megapixels do matter i could only have a A7RII, if megapixels dont matter thaat much and for lower a A7C with the befenits of poecketporatbility.
thanks for pointing out this, it was not on my radar. I will have a look at a store. the RF lenses options are not great but yes, the 28mm 2.8 would fit perfectly. I have the 35 1.8 which has terrible autofocus, hunting all the time. from what I read the R8 would be perfect apart from battery which seems to be quite bad

I am having similar needs regarding the camera i am currently looking for. I am trying the X-M5 route but one other camera that i would love to test is the Canon R8. It seems to check all the boxes you need. Combined with the 28mm pancake it is really small while still usable. You can use all the lenses you have. Basically a R6II without ibis. I guess for video work you put it on an small gimbal anyway...
I haven't fully watched the following video, but you can see how the combination of R8 and 28mm looks. (It's around 2:40 - the rest of the video he is holding an R6 or R5)
