The need for no limit during video recording is fairly limited for the target audience of these cameras. Hence it is hard for a company to include this feature and increase the price of a camera, unless it is targeted mostly for video like the GH line. What could be done from the side of the camera companies is 1. Have a model for Europe with the limitation and another for the rest of the world 2. Allow users to pay extra for this like the V-log. How easy are these I don't know, but they are definitely doable as Panasonic has shown. I understand that it might not be optimal, but an easy way for the user to get "unlimited" recording time is with the use of an external recorder. Even a 1080p recorder when downsampling from 4K would give excellent results for an interview.

Using compression with moving shots can create some very interesting effects of things moving at different speeds or directions. You can also use it as another way of blurring the background with moving subjects, or even keeping the tight perspective when the subject moves towards or away from the camera. Here is one example with a 100mm lens, but there are plenty for you to explore. You might not like it but as a cinematographer you should open your mind and be able to use tools to their full extent.

Length as in literally the length from the front element to the mount.

I assume 135mm is the actual length of the lens . But I guess with a moving 135mm focal length you can get some very interesting perspective effects .

In my experience with clear zoom and the A7rII, the readout of the sensor does not change. There is just a fancy interpolation back to the original resolution. Of course this might have changed in the latest models, but I wouldn't bet on it. See here for more details:

Camera ergonomics are at least partly subjective, but my ideal mirrorless design is a mini D5/1DmkII. For example I would like A9 to be something like this: Who knows maybe when Nikon & Canon decide they need to make a sports mirrorless camera we will see something like it.

Yep, these automatic methods of LUT generation have a problem at the boundaries of the color spectrum. I tested with many videos and images and I found it fine, but I did not with a gradient like that. In your test images the first is the Hue to Luma with max Saturation, and the second Hue to Saturation with mid Luminance correct?

Having used the A7rII for years and now the A7rIII, I agree with that. Now I got the vertical grip which brings a tremendous improvement in handling, giving it a similar feel to the D3 that I was using in the past, but that of course comes with the size & weight increase.

It's great that you both see that the D3400 is a better choice and with the cheapo 4000D Canon is targeting noobs that don't know better. That was the point of most articles critical of the camera including the OP.

Then a Nikon D3400 kit can be bought at the same price (or even cheaper) NEW, offering better resolution, ISO, AF, LCD, built quality... Canon didn't do anything outstanding here, they just try to exploit a low budget market by selling recycled materials under their recognized brand. And try to guess what is going to happen to that plastic mount once the child inevitably drops the camera...

Yeah mercer and that's exactly what I don't like about this. The notion that "DSLR is what photographers use" which Canon is using. Another example: I could argue that if you want to buy a camera for your child, then for the same money an LX100 is going to be much better, easier to use and carry around and because of that, produce better results.

Exactly. For North America and most Europe there are much better cameras and deals. For the same money you can even get the FF A7 and strap on a manual lens with an adapter and the quality will be miles better. Forthe countries that would really benefit from a low price point this is just too much. A mirrorless design would make much more sense than a crappy DSLR. It could be any combination of the following: - Well lit houses with plenty of light coming from the large windows - Using lights to bring the inside/outside closer - High dynamic range camera with log/Raw For example in my house, I can achieve this effect with fairly large and plenty windows + slog2 with A7rII.

I just got my hands on an A7rIII and the greatest drawback of A7rII has been fixed: Shutter sounds great!

Yep, but the point of the article was that: 1. The camera is still too expensive for many 2. The components in the camera are too old and don't really add up to the value of the camera indicating higher profit margins for Canon. 3. You can already get better quality at a cheaper price point
