If 8-bit, 4:2:0 AVCHD from a Micro Four Thirds sensor

That's from an old sensor too! And "only" FHD.

Recording FHD 8bit 420 from a GH6 today (maybe you've got severe budget issues when it comes to storage space and/or a potato as an editing PC) would look waaay better than the GH2 does.

Yes, punch cards were a real pain! The basement of the computer center had about a dozen IBM card punch machines, and they were always in use during the day, so lots of people, including me, did our work at odd hours to avoid the rush. The biggest fear we had was dropping a card deck and having to put all the cards back in order.

Even I have nightmares about that happening!

FORTRAN is still pretty popular among the scientific crowd, who use it for things like modeling dynamic systems.

Under certain circumstances then Fortran is faster than C

Lots of discussion of the EVA1, Varicam, etc in there, as well as rumours of a refreshed cine line with S35 and FF/MF options.

I still utterly irrationally want a Panasonic Varicam LT. (they can be got for maybe US$3.5K on eBay)

And to buy half a dozen Panasonic BS1H box cameras to make 360VR with!

They've had a huge price drop, down to US$2.5K brand new (same price as a new S1H! Which itself has got a big price drop):

Unfortunately we got a shock when we arrived in second year at the start of a unit called something like Numerical and Computational Methods and they told us we'd spend the first 8 weeks learning Fortran, then we'd be using it to program all sorts of horrific mathematics-related things, like converging and diverging algorithms, L-U matrix decomposition, path-finding, etc.

    Love it! That's my jam.

After all that, if I had to pick a programming language to work in, Fortran wouldn't be it!

lol! Don't blame PTSD from then as reasons not to use Fortran today 😛

I learned FORTRAN in high school. It was the first high-level language I learned.

At university, the first CS class that every CS major had to take was a FORTRAN programming class. I was an EE major, but I took it anyway as I could see that's where the industry was headed. The work was done on a CDC 6400 mainframe using punched cards.

Wow, our posts are bringing out all the older times from the woodworks! 😮

Punch cards... I thank my lucky stars I never had to do that. (although I did have one Physics lab, stretched out over multiple 3hr sessions, where I was literally flipping switches so as to enter in my program I'd written in binary to then run it on their hardware)

Anyway, Fortran of today in 2024 is very different to the Fortran you'd have used back then! 🙂

Fortran is even a Top 20 language, in terms of popularity in the world (currently at this moment it's ranked #12):

On the topic of 2.5K, I saw a crazy cheap BMCC 2.5K MFT for just US$300 on eBay today but the shipping costs are obscene 😞

COBOL guys are still needed everywhere. 😀

I wish I used to code in COBOL! (or heck, Fortran)

But sadly it's something far worse... FoxPro (both FoxPro 2.6 and Visual FoxPro).

Well, FoxPro is definitely a much "better" language than COBOL. But I'd say its market value in terms of employability is drastically lower.

The same thing is happening to me! All of these uncommon items that I haven't seen on eBay in years seem to be popping up right now. It's pretty uncanny.

Oh well. Like you, I am still holding strong.

I've been seeing a surprising number (i.e. more than zero, which is the usual amount) of Aaton Cantar X3 (or Cantar Mini ) recorders being listed in recent months, the temptation is terribly real and hard. (it helps though not having the $$$$ for them! ha)

I have a couple of mini-docs to shoot soon and really wanted to have just one light that can fight daylight. I happened to come across the ZSYB 500w COB on eBay for an astonishing GBP206! At that price it's definitely worth a punt. I'll report back once it gets here.

That's surprisingly cheap! Let us know how it sounds please, am curious if it is very noisy.

That field is being "taken over" by AI a lot more than the video and photo stuff everyone here seems so worried about.

I think the demand for Juniors/Interns in that field is probably going to soon drop off a cliff, but I think the demand for Senior Software Developers will remain strong for years to come

If Lumix wants to blow everyone out of the water ( now they have decent AF) they should release a S1H2 and a GH7 with some kind of ND. The S2 would be fine being a high res photo centric version without ND.

Yeah the GH1 was groundbreaking itself, as were the ones after it, the GH4 and even GH5.

But the competition is so hot now, GH7 needs something "big" in it. And 8K or raw won't do it.

Internal NDs are what we need! (and/or SDI out.... please??)

The world needs an interesting larger sensor camcorder IMHO so a new version of the DVX200 with the internals of the G9ii would be a good cross division collaboration.

If they're going to release a "DX300", then they should make it with a MFT mount.

But if they're going to release a new pro video camera with a mirrorless mount, then it would more likely be an "EVA2" with a L Mount

Is there that big of a market for people that are hired by Netflix to make content and want to shoot on $2k cameras as the a cam?  Their approved list is only for content they produce in-house.  If you want to sell a film to Netflix, you can shoot it on anything you want - and you can shoot some percentage of footage on non-approved cameras as well.

True, but there is also a huge class of productions which are not for Netflix but have very similar needs/expectations.

I think a lot of gimbal users are actually solo shooters. If work as a team, maybe dolly jib etc are more traditional.

Steadicam is the "traditional" alternative to a gimbal. (although, they're both slightly different types of tools, and not exact replacements for each other!)

However due to the massively lower costs of a gimbal (both the equipment and the operator), then I do see gimbals being used instead quite often.

I suggest post editing time for about 10-15 minutes, now it is about 1 minute. I tried many times to edit typo and add more but it is gone.

I agree, even a 15minute edit length would be a huge improvement over the only five minutes or so we have now (it's a little longer than 1 minute? But not by much).

Although I personally feel perhaps an hour or three would be the sweet spot. As that's still waaaaay under the typical time period for when those spammy bots would be posting then returning back to add sneaky links in the edit.

This is the million dollar question. Do you have any top contenders?

I think perhaps going back to my old career as a Software Developer.

(it was a loooong time ago, we were programming on stone tablets with hammer & chisels)

  15. Maybe them merging is good news?? When we consider all the negative infighting between the pro video and consumer divisions (because they pro division was very jealous of the success of the GH series. I bet for instance that's why we never ever saw a Panasonic EVA1 MFT, even though that made 100% sense!).

As maybe, just maybe we'll see them now working together??

Bring on the Panasonic EVA2 with L Mount!

GH4 was the second dslm/r camera with 4K after the Canon 1DC afaik. And it was the first affordable one and approachable one with its 4K 100mbit codec.  First 4k dslr from Nikon must have been the D500 i think. @sanveer

Yes, Panasonic GH4 was the first non-cinema hybrid camera (as the 1D C was part of Canon's cinema series, although in a hybrid camera form factor). And the Nikon D5/D500 was the first 4K DSLR (as the GH4 was mirrorless).

My strategy is to draft the post, then re-read it in the editor before posting it.

    I try to do this.

But that is not how my brain works.

I only see my mistakes immediately AFTER I have pressed the "submit" button! haha

When I post it and then re-read it I have to frantically make edits until the timer blocks any more edits.  I think it's a 5 minute window.

I also have a vague recollection that it was put into effect because people were making inflammatory posts and then days later were editing them then gaslighting everyone after the evidence had been erased.  It made for very strange reading too because it looked like they made a calm post and then all the following quotes were doctored to make them the asshole.

    Yeah, it's a pity.

I feel that the timer should be longer. Say if it was an hour long.

Then if you post, then someone else replies at some point in the future, and you then reply back after trying to edit it, welllll..... the hour probably has expired already? (for instance, your reply to me just now, over two hours has passed!)

But if you're just taking your time to read through the thread, and you get other thoughts you want to add to your post as you read further into the thread, well it's unlikely you'll take longer than a whole hour to read to the end of the thread?

Any reason I shouldn't buy the Samsung T9 drive?  Pricing is not much more than the T7 and it's faster and more future-proof.

I remember reading there was so sort of compatibility issues with BMD cameras and the newer Samsung drives?

But checking it out quickly shows this post from a couple of days ago, saying T9 is all good:

    https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=190756

This post says T7 is bad:

    https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=165083

But now the SamsungT7 Shield Portable SSD 1TB / 2TB / 4TB is listed as supported:

    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59025

So they found a way?? And updated the firmware. (as the 2nd forum post was a little while ago)

Thus either would be fine??? If the price difference is only small, get the T9

    Edit:

ahhhh... it was about the Shield vs non-Shield versions of the T7:

even though bm cams have af, it is not on par with sony and canon cams, even not on par with red komodo. certainly you can use it for gimbal, but many more dps use sony cams for gimbal work.

The vast majority of times I'm on shoots with a gimbal they're not using AF. As they have a 1st AC.

    3. Alister Chapman shown that 10bit Slog2 held no disadvantage on the FS7 compared to its linear 12bit Raw output. Always a great presenter and a good reason to grab some chocolate milk and some cookies and watch a 2.5 hour presentation.

That was more a design flaw of the FS7 itself though

12bit from an ARRI for instance will be great.

i watched his doc before and was very impressed. previously i assumed he used o7q for f35 444 12 bit uncompressed. after reading this article, i am surprised that he used a bm hyperdeck for 1080p 10 bit 422 prores (hq). 422 prores can be thus good in right hands!

Portability likely trumped out and won in the end. A Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q isn't exactly an easy hassle free approach vs a lightweight little Hyperdeck (or perhaps if he was doing it today, an Atomos Ninja Star???? Maybe)
