Some really sound advice from tosvus:

    ----------
You also have to take into affect that if you are going for Black Magic Cinema Camera that you'll have to get used to other caviats: SSD, RAW/Proress workflow in post, and you wont be able to deleted captured media via the BMCC, You'll have to do that with a pc. If you're just starting out dont go full BMCC unless you have the time and patience for it. If you dont have any eperience at all then get a t3i or GH2/G6 depending on the glass you want to get, these are reletively cheap now. I mean there's no reason to go full out if you dont really have experience as it can be overwhelming. Then later if you want raw you can get the Black Magic Pocket Cinema.

It doesn't sound like your usage will be terribly critical in terms of image quality, to be honest. Also, you should take into consideration what lenses you have (if you already own any, that is).

I have to say I have not followed the 60D, so I don't know what the Magic Lantern hack enables (if anything) on it, but if you are looking at in-camera video with audio embedded, the GH3 is very strong out of the box. It also supports 60p in 1920x1080 resolution, which may be useful in training videos as it allows you to slow down the motion. Even IF the 60D has capability for raw through a hack, it is more complicated to work with as it does not allow for audio. 60D probably gives better quality photos, and somewhat better low light capability due to larger sensor.

Regarding audio, keep in mind that the GH3 has a headphone jack which means easy monitoring straight out of the cam, which the 60D does not have. The built in mic on the gh3 is ok, but you can easily add a good mic to it as it has mic input, and so has the 60D.

Another point to keep in mind, if you need to move around a lot, carrying the camera, the GH3 w/lens will be lighter and smaller.

I personally think the GH3 is far superior overall when speaking strictly about video (w/audio). However if you are willing to tinker and have a more cumbersome workflow, it may be possible to get quality that surpasses it with a hacked 60D (but again, don't know enough about magic lantern for the 60D).

Regarding the Black Magic Design Cameras, they are all better than either the GH3 or the 60D in video quality out of the box, but really consider those strictly for video. The caveat here is, based on your post, I take it you may not be used to manual focusing(I'm still learning). If that is the case, some of the BMD's only do manual focus, while the new BMPCC camera (that is not out yet..) is supposed to have at least some crude AF.

This is a filmmaking forum. Many cameras like the 60D do both stills and photography. We are primarily interested in how well a camera system works for shooting video. Stills are fairly irreverent around here.

Here's the bottom-line if you want to get into video production and are choosing a camera system: the investment comes after the camera body purchase. If you go with 60d/70d, you are going to begin investing in Canon glass. If you go with GH3 or BMPCC (pocket camera), you are going to start buying mFT glass. If you go with Nikon, etc...

With the advance in tech, we are all tossing our camera bodies every 18 months to buy the new latest-and-greatest. However, our lens set becomes our old friends for years to come.

If you want to get started in video production, you can't go wrong buying a used t2i/t3i/t4i/60d/7d -- and throwing a 50mm f1.8 on the front and going nuts. I shot money-making jobs with this combo for more than a year when I started.

If you want to buy new -- you have a handful of good options, but for the dedicated filmmaker -- you want the GH3 or the BMPCC. Why? Beyond the stellar image quality for the price -- they are the only bodies in the price range to include a headphone jack.

If you want a new camera today, get the GH3 -- without question.

    Take a look at this - http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_60D-vs-Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GH3/score

They have weighted camera popularity as 100 in the points scheme. Insane.

Thus 60D scores 90 and GH3 just 5 for that, whilst image quality (based on DXOMark which only measures the sensor and not video or image processing) is weighted far less at 45.

Had the 60D not been handed that 90 for simply being a Canon, the GH3 would have won on the final tally 96.4 to 83.2 and that is not even taking video into account which is vastly better featured and better quality on the Panasonic.

The Canyon - Shot during a two hour trip to the canyon

For this video, I shot with a faster CF Card (100 MBS) that gave me 1344 X 1008 resolution at 24 FPS in 4:3 mode without skipping frames. I could shoot for at least 6 minutes (I didn't try shooting longer). I did my color correction with Adobe Photoshop and converted to 2688 X 1008 in Compressor.

Anyone else shooting anamorphic on the 50D in 4:3? Can anyone shoot higher resolution than 1344 X 1008? Thank you.

30sec spot for TV. Glass used were OM 12mm f2, Panny 20mm f1.7, and  Nikkor 55mm f1.2. Really loving GH3 and I still get surprized seeing some of the footage that comes from this camera. Locally most people are using FS700s for TV and I'm happy that such a little camera holds it's own against footage shot on the FS700.

"The team tells me that we are still on track to start shipping before the end of July. I'm not sure if there will be more of an official update than that within the next week, but for anyone in the LA area, we will have cameras at our event on Thursday if you want to check them out"

What makes you think they haven't been produced yet? My guess is that they are waiting on the firmware, and that thousands of units are already produced.

Well they should have a pretty good idea yeah, whether they're sharing it or not is another thing, but this is kind of their job so they should know...
They keep saying July, just last week someone from BMD said July, they booked two events in the USA for July and August, so yeah, I'd say they have an idea when they're shipping...

Why does it have to be one of the two?
I repeat, they're not late yet, they said it would ship in July, so if cameras get to the stores by late August I don't see that as "late".

However, if they do fuck up again, I'll be the first to point the finger and blame the way they're doing business. Just not before.

Actually you need a larger and more unwieldy external box: an entire computer to offload to (or if you trust one of those offloader devices be my guest) every 15 minutes. You need somewhere to put the computer, keep it powered, you need to stop the entire shoot or have an assistant for the offloads. With an external recorder like the Ninja 2, you can record all day long, direct to ProRes 422 HQ, without ever changing drives or batteries, four channel audio pre-aligned, with scene and shot and take written directly to the filenames, and you get a peaking monitor thrown into the bargain, for $695 retail with commodity drives (even rotational laptop drives) and cheap Sony-type batteries the only additional expenses. No assistant needed, no interruptions to workflow during capture or post, no transcodes, batteries are even hot-swappable if you do run out.

And they do not smell if kept clean.

As for the perfect camera, Sony F55 + R5 (also an odor-free external recorder, with a handy clip mount direct to the chassis) looks to be quite acceptable if you can't spring for the Alexa atm.

Global shutter of the bmcc 4k version and agreement on lens mount that allows for use of most dslr lenses (either m43 or nex e mount) should be added to the list. Built in ND?

You'd be surprised how many great h264 dslr shots were keyed perfectly.
Having more depth helps, but probably not as much as good lighting.
Also, using something like 5DtoRGB to transcode to Prores444 helps a lot when keying DSLR footage.

I read somewhere it comes with a faster controller. If it's the latest could go up to 105Mb/s.
And also we don't know what's going on inside it... what if Canon gave us a compressed raw stream instead of an uncompressed raw? Sounds extremely unlikely, but so did raw in the first place. CPU and other optimizations might also help make it happen.
From the moment a 50D can shoot 1080p raw, I would certainly not rule out the 70D, especially this early on. :)

Hey folks....I'm about to jump head first onto the 5D3 raw bandwagon.
So I am going to have a Nikon v1 for sale (body only) to help towards funds...but the cool thing that I can offer is a DIY  EF mount that my genius friend Richard Gale knocked up for me. This mount cleverly tricks the Nikon into thinking that the 'approved' kit lens is attached, when in fact it is attached at the end of a short umbilical cable!

Sorry, I don't want to split the two...only Camera and DIY adapter for sale.

    This is it...

    http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/2274-nikon-v1-shooting-4k-60fps-raw-for-200/?p=32048

This setup allows the user to attach any EF lens to the mount and use as normal....although you may get funny looks with a cable and wrapped up kit lens dangling from the EF mount...but hey, that's part of the fun.

Modifications are to the EF adapter only...the camera itself is untouched and virtually new condition, it just lacks the kit lens.
I'll have original box, charger/battery etc that I can retrieve from under my bed if motivated :)

PM me with an offer if interested, I would prefer it go to a good home where experimental modifications are appreciated, and someone will give it the use that I should have done.

    Cheers

great on a GH3 very useful zoom range  - aspheric elements so super sharp

or get a Canon FD 24-35mm zoom a stunningly sharp lens widely regarded as sharper than most prime lenses
and a very useful zoom range on a GH3
