I did a very quick test with the Technicolor Cinestyle picture style. Please note that these are very rough quick grades and I am not a colorist and they are far from being good ones, but I shot this just to demonstrate that how the 1DX2 looks with the Cinestyle picture style.

Resolve dropped the resolution from 4096x2160 to 3840x2160 because I did not have free USB for the Resolve dongle and I used the free version.

The BMD Film LUT makes the Cinestyle footage way too oversaturated. I reduced the saturation quite a bit, but too much was still left. But it is there for demonstration only, kind of demonstrates that the BMD film is still flatter (in saturation at least) than the Technicolor Cinestyle.

Image looks think, definitely not a fan.....

Definitely need some kind of "Film Emulsion" to make it look imo "nicer" "Filmic". Personally I think the Blackmagic Ursa and Ursa Mini 4k for the price are delivering the nicest image, followed closely by Sony A7S II (in the right hands)

  2. @j.f.r.

That's what I said. See those colors. Now the said FS7 - with cards, batteries and one good lens (that means speedbooster!) is just below €10.000. And despite all the advantages, built-in ND, a zillion profiles and auto modes, native 4k, you won't reach this quality (or can someone, please!, show me an example?).

Raw or ProRes? Graded from scratch or with (which) Lut?

Thanks, project was shot in ProRes Film Mode and colored from scratch in Resolve (No Luts used). From my experience with the camera RAW introduces more Aliasing and Moire, which is why I shoot ProRes unless I NEED the RAW workflow for color temperature or maximum dynamic range.

Truth is though ProRes imo is my preferred method of using the camera as I feel the compression eliminates Moire and Aliasing by a lot compared to Raw.

Dynamic Range, Richness and Color of this camera imo is amazing and no other camera in its class is even close.......

  3.

At the end its personal preference that makes the biggest difference.

It's no personal preference that the C100 Mark II is a much better video camera than any of this Panasonic Ones.

Buy the Canon C100 Mark II and it will open new business for you, definitely the best video camera within it's price range for the work you do.

  4. . Yes and in my opinion that's horrible. the a7rii have more options for recording, less rolling shutter in FF mode, who cares if the ful lreadout is crop? you can use more lenses and use the speedbooster, are they even aware of the speedboosters ? it is dissapointing that a7s is not better in video. At this point, after seeing all the test shots, I am disappointed and have to absolutely agree that a7s ii was rushed, and not needed. It is simply a rip of for the guys who bought atomos. Moreover this camera doesn't offer anything more from the a7rii but a bit better lowlight (really in all the tests i ve seen, unless you want to shoot in moonlight, which you still can with the a7s mark i) and the 120fps in 1080p which is still not that stellar. i am dissapointed, rebranded sensor for 2899USD with a major sunspot issue ? WTF SONY ?! they should have waited, bring out a mature product , and separate it from a7rii with video completely like 10bit, (i dont care if the current processors do not support it, change them) so that we dont need to hesitate between those two. oh god sony why ?!

    Definitely not true......

A7RII is good but even the original A7s is better let alone the A7s II.

In Full Frame mode A7RII and moire and aliasing, something the A7s does not. As someone who has worked with both cameras I would definitely recommend the A7s II over the A7r II.

  5. think you may be mistaken. Have you owned or shot with the NX1 ? Honest question. I have footage I shot with both the GH4 & A7S and they dont come close. They are very detailed but you have to understand the nx1 is 6.5k downscaled to 4k...that's no easy feat...its true resolution not digital sharpening.

bro I've seen good narratives on an iPhone 6s and a Canon T3i. If you can't shoot a good narrative on a NX1 thats a personal issue lol. Any camera released at this point could do great work, what I look for more than anything in a camera is the aesthetic quality the lens/sensor combination gives you. Every sensor see's light different and the same goes for the lens...

    http://www.eoshd.com/2015/11/samsung-nx1-officially-dead-samsung-announce-complete-discontinuation-in-europe/

The consumers have spoken, live in that "imaginary" NX1  world if you want too............

  6. What do you consider poor ISO performance? I can shoot up to ISO 2500 just fine on the NX1, which is plenty for me.  I consider a sensor with 2000+ ISO native sensitivity a niche thing.  Who wants to shoot in daylight at ISO 3200, or even 1600 for that matter.  That's craziness.  Sure, you can shoot in pitch black... but, that's not a normal thing for me.  Normal conditions, 4K on the NX1 > Sony A7R II and Sony A7S II (from what I can tell so far).

Call it sharpness or detail, I call it resolution.  And it is your friend.  You can always artificially down-resolve an image, but you can never add true resolution like you get with the NX1.

    Post your 2000+ iso footage......

Also I work with professional cameras, NX1 is has nothing similar to RED, SONY, ARRI, PHANTOM, etc.

You perceive "digital sharpness" and mistake it for resolution/dynamic range. Personally the NX1 imo has a horrible image and I haven't seen even one good narrative done on the camera. I would rather shoot on a 5D before I pick up and use an NX1.

  7. NX1 has less dynamic range + poor iso performance. These cameras are very different, NX1 definitely has more detail, GH4 probably even more, the thing is this doesn't translate to a "nice" image.....

GH4 razor sharp, which makes it look like artificial "sharpened" video that's great for News broadcast, I would say the NX1 is in the same vein as the GH4.

A7 cameras by Sony are more in vein with Canon 5D's, more sharper than 5D but not as "cynical" sharp as NX1 and GH4. Personally I still like the 5D Mark III, great colors and a well accepted image everyone likes. Truth be told I worked on a project shot on RED and the client liked the shots of a 5D Mark III better......

Sharpness/Detail is not always your friend........

  8. The extra time spent pulling hair in every project grading the s-gamut could definitely be put to better use elsewhere. That's why recently I canceled the A7S II order for a Samsung NX1 (order placed already). For 1/3 the price, it's a much more capable machine (skin tone, battery, build). The major trade off being dynamic range. I'm fine with not having IBIS for 1/3 the price; I was already planning on a Nebula 4200lite, even if I had gotten an A7S II.

But I am still rooting for Sony. Like Samsung, on a greater scale, they are kicking a lot of asses. I do hope Sony pulls through with future models. There's no excuse for getting the basics wrong (like poor battery life) on a $3000 dslr-sized camera from a company with such tremendous goals (like their possible 21-stop sensor.)

Everyone has their opinion, personally the Sony A7 cameras are excellent when in the correct hands.......

    https://vimeo.com/137925379

  9. Yeah I don't need full frame, I do want a clean image(way less noise) + clean iso up to 6400 and 10bit internal would be very nice.

It's not going to happen with MFT, as a matter of fact you can't even go above 1600 ISO without getting noise. MFT at best is a max 800 iso camera which is good if you're in a studio setting but anything above that honestly simply doesn't work imo. FF cameras by technical design simply allow greater possibilities.......

For the record I was one of the eary/first adopters of GH1, Hacked GH2 etc. and while they are great cameras for budget I truly believe they are much better cameras now within the $3-4k price range. Hacked 5D, A7s, A7R, Blackmagic, etc

  10. Also, unless you have the money or making that kind of money I would say the Sony FS7 (around 10K with everything) is definitely not a personal camera and structured more towards a working professional with clients. The most I would go is the Sony Fs700 around $5k as I know you could easily make money back doing corporate jobs and commercials, it's an excellent slow-motion camera as well that many clients use for music videos.

  11. No one camera does it all, but I will say this......

The Sony A7R II is an EXCELLENT stills / video camera.

40+ MP FF means you can do professional photography work which in turn will help with extra money. On the video side it does 4K in camera with FF or S35. The main advantage of the A7R II vs A7s I and II would be if you're doing photography, that 42Mp FF sensor can deliver some amazing photos. Also A7R II can use many S35 cinema glass in 4K, something the A7S cannot as 4K is only in FF. I'm editing a project rite now shot on A7R II and honestly very impressed with the image quality.

Now if you're not into or don't plan to do photography than I would suggest an Sony A7s + Ninja Assassin Recorder. You can find the Sony A7s now around $1600-$1900 since the A7s II was released which honestly makes no sense to buy unless you NEED 4K in camera. To me attaching a monitor like the Ninja Assassin gives you the best of both worlds.

Blackmagic Ursa Mini will definitely be one of the best prosumer cameras released, but it will easily cost close to 8k with all options.

  12. When did delivering on time and delivering an amazing product become mutually exclusive?

What if... you quoted the appropriate amount of time it takes to deliver an amazing product rather than quoting not-enough time, and having to miss your deadline?

It's a simple concept. Reminds me a little bit of this...

You must have never worked in the industry, from Films to Video Game development I can tell you the countless amounts of times things have been delayed so we can deliver a better product, it's very common. Now if you're doing a simple corporate video, sure no reason to delay something that doesn't have anything complex.

While what you are saying is true that doesn't give them the right or justification to deceive people which is what they are doing and if you reallly did business the way they do you would loose clients I know I would. If the Mini has FPN or corrupted audio or promised features that are not available for months and months later via a firmware update or the Mini drops $1000 a few months after you finally get your pre-order are you still going to feel the same way? I mean if you knew their history you would have known it might happen so the fault is yours not theirs, right?

BM has a reputation for being unreliable and not trustworthy, I think they have earned that reputation.

Blackmagic isn't going to lose any clients, no camera manufacturer in the world is delivering what they will with the Ursa Mini.....

  13. It's the consumer's fault for being upset that they announce dates they don't deliver on?

I don't have a problem with the amount of time they're taking to deliver products.  Their specs and prices are ahead of everything else out there! I just wish they would learn from their own mistakes, and quit quoting dates they can't hit.  It should not be the consumer's responsibility to learn to distrust a company by not taking them at their word. I don't think Blackmagic would even agree with your suggestion to do that.

Could you imagine if we handled our clients this way? Even if we missed deadlines but our end-product was amazing, we lose favor with our client. It's bad business, nothing else to it. And it's okay to call them out. It may not move the shipping date up, but it's doing what we can to hold them accountable to their word. And I think that's a good thing :)

We don't lose clients, that's the way things are......

You can deliver on time with an average product or off schedule with an amazing one.....

NO company is doing what Blackmagic is doing/done, sit back and relax. Blackmagic has SEVERAL amazing cameras out right NOW, when their new models are ready that's when they will be in our hands. I currently am looking to buy a Micro and an Ursa Mini, till then I will shoot on an A7s......

  14.  I shot the first two with the Sony A7s, and I was relatively happy with the results but you can still tell it's shot on a lower tier camera.

Sony A7s is definitely a great camera and you're definitely not using it to it's full potential if you feel that way. My first suggestion would be to rent some nice glass such as Zooms, Macro, etc. Canon L lenses are fine so are the Sony E lenses as well. Also you can rent a 4K recorder such as the Ninja Assassin and record 4K Pro Res that would definitely bump up your source footage.

The next step up from Sony A7s would be Blackmagic Ursa which definitely has a lovely image, but be careful as you would definitely not be able to "run and gun" with the camera like you would with the Sony A7s due to not being as low light sensitive.

  15. I would think so but maybe someone else can confirm.

If anyone is interested in downloading a 4K VLog file from the camera I put one up on Dropbox:https://www.dropbox.com/s/dqt77smrousu9vk

Dynamic range looks nice, noise appears to be because of underexposure. I would definitely record slighter hotter to possibly help against this, even though we all pretty much know smaller sensor cameras usually display more noise than larger ones.

  16. Well excuse me but I don't like at all the colors and grading of the 2 images above.

I never said A7S colors are shit however. I even showed in another post some great videos of A7S with nice colors (and in each case it was not SLOG2, and very little grade).

    Just an exemple :

The problem is you're just an "arm chair" you fill in the blank......... I've shot countless projects on all cameras and the A7s is no different, people worried about this or that and don't even work anywhere remotely close to any kind of industry..... Canon colors are fine, just like Sony, just like Red, just like etc. I truly wish this forum concentrated more on peoples work instead He Say / She Say bullshit posts........

  17.

Canon, Sony or any other system for that matter can give you great results. Sony A7s shoots a log image that you an basically push it anywhere you want, you just need to know what you're doing. All "video screen grabs" shot on A7s , colored in Resolve. I posted these before, but I have to remind people it's not the tools....................

  18.

Probably the worst analogy I've read on here for a long time.  Is it "convenient" to lug that hard-to-see $2k Atomos device (in broad daylight) around with the a7s to shoot 4k?  Methinks no.  Some of us want to shoot in 4k.  The 1dc was only available en masse beginning in early 2013 - it's not from 10 years ago.  Still easily trumps any of these other "new" cameras as far as image quality, colors, low light, native mount (lens choice) and easily as a sports shooter.  Sorry, but it's still the best "all arounder" that exists on the market.  Nothing beats it at both...yet.  Yes the 12k initial price was absurd, but you can find these used in the 4300-5300 USD price range.

#22 - Being a native EF mount, it has built in peripheral illumination correction and chromatic aberration correction for EF lenses.  Light fall off can be tricky to fix in post.  Can't get this with the a7s + any adapter + EF lenses.

    #23 - 18 megapixel vs. 12.  Huge difference.

It's a perfect analogy and I agree who cares.......  Also the A7s has another crop mode or should I say Sony Zoom that gives you another crop similar to MFT. Can you use the 1DC EVF for video........

Sony uses mirrorless technology which will last longer (shutter count) and can adapt many more lenses via adapters than Canon.

The argument of your Monitor is ludicrous, any professional and I mean ANY professional project has at any given time 2-3 monitors hooked up to a camera, with the Atomos Shogun on the A7s you're able to record 4k now.

    Also Sony Zeiss has 25mm F/2 , 35mm F/2 , etc. You also have amazing lenses like 50mm f/0.95.........

We can go on and on, people need to be shooting instead of making sense posts on forums. I would much rather appreciate to view actual projects and productions shot on specific cameras and we discuss those advantages/minuses......

  19. j.f.r. had an interesting observation on this in an earlier thread. Basically, big budget folks are not going to blur out their $$$ sets and spectacular locations; whereas low budget indies have a lot to hide in most cases. Which probably explains part of indies' infatuation with super shallow DoF.

    Buy this man a cigar.........

Big Budget sets no need for such shallow DOF, unless done for an "artistic" reason. Shooting with no budget though in your backyard is another thing.........
