I am upgrading some members to moderator status. If they choose to exercise their newfound abilities, this upgrade comes with the ability to delete and lock posts as well as the all powerful, all conquering ability to ban members who misbehave!

Thanks for their positive contributions to life here at EOSHD I am promoting RichG101, mtheory and jonpais to moderator status for the main forum and all sub-sections.

It carries no extra work or obligations - exercising their privileges will be entirely at the discretion of the moderator. I'll continue as the main admin. But I think having extra eyes and ears plus a few more trusted people with the ability to clean up posts and ban members will help me a lot.

Also since they expressed an interest, JohnBarlow will moderate the Anamorphic forum and Andy Lee will get his own sticky thread on lenses and lighting which may build into it's own forum section if it is successful.

I'll create the moderator privileges later in the week. Any objections or any opt outs please have your say on this thread!

    Andrew,

If it helps you with the load, I can offer my time and experience to moderate the Anamorphic Forum.

Having worked in the glass industry with three majors (including Pilkington Bros) and have offered good content in this area (about one in three of my posts get a like); my offer is on the table.

JohnBarlow got a reaction from Lucian in How do single focus anamophic lenses work
Referring to ISCO patents, the trick is in the balance between lens curvature and glass index, and, unfortunately, that's where things start to get expensive. Custom glass with custom index is very pricey.

Some time ago a poster asked about replacing the front glass on a 54. After some enquiries, out of curiosity,  I discovered for this size optic the mould fee would be about $1500. Made from cast iron the quality would be bad at 60-40 scratch dig, so would need further tooling costs to polish it down to an acceptable 20-10.

Basic conclusion was that it would be cheaper to purchase another 54 after all the messing about.

Yeah, Blue ghosts, which makes this the perfect adapter if you wanna make a PacMan movie. No kidding.

Part 2! All the night parts were done using m42 russian glass, iscorama and a 5D3 shooting raw. Lighting was mainly practical with flames, a couple flashlights and one "Kick" led panel (from kickstarter).

we're currently moving towards an 8-episode first season, to be shot during May, using BMPCC and anamorphic lenses (Iscorama and Foton-A). :)

    Hi guys,

We just shot this video with the BMCC, Metabones Speedbooster, Nikon Lenses and Iscorama 54MC.
RAW files were developped in After Effects CS6 (with Camera Raw) to Prores444 2400/1350. Color grading was done in AE.

Please let us know what you think, we'd love to get some feedback.

    Cheers,
    Mihnea

Can be that the reason is the SLR. But for me their anamorphot seems like nothing more than an improved model of the century 16:9. That's not a compliment.
People that know to appreciate the organic look and sharpness will go for the classics. I wish there was a relevant competitor but there is nothing out there yet. Give me new anamorphic glass that can compete with the brilliant optics of the Bolex anamorphot...Same for the Lomos, Kowas and the Iscoramas (and well...for most of those things that smells like the 60's :-)
I'm not talking only about sharpness here. It's also distortion, Chromatic aberration(!!!), organic flares and...oh...character!
I believe it would take some time to see something really good around, definitely not in single focus soon for a decent price. I'm also generally not a fan of those focus through adapters. They always seem like the easy way to do it and it's just never really sharp and / or too much diopter oriented. Even the Letus is not really sharp (but still expensive, especially with all the extras you want to have) Besides X1.33 is not really that cool. We need a bit more spice than that. If you have a sharp camera, or you're a lucky 4k owner, you can blow it up a bit and nobody will say anything.

That's just my opinion. And regarding the new lenses it's all impressions i got from links online, Iv'e never tried them myself.

Conclusion: I prefer to focus two rings and get a lovely classic anamorphic image there. Or of course to go for a single focus Lomo / Isco if my wallet stands the pain...

The design condition for an anamorphic lens is always at the infinity focus state (afocal rule). So if a lens is stated at 1.5x it means this is true only for an object focused at infinity.

Objects focused at close range will exhibit lower stretch, perhaps as low as 70% of the rated stretch at say 0.5m. This is the reason behind the mumps phenomenon in projected films.

This is how to do it....

1 In the NLE, place clip on timeline and overlay 3 copies.
2 Normalise the result to 10 bit to prevent over exposure
    3 Shift copy1 vertical by 1 pixel
4 Shift copy2 vertical by 1 pixel and horizontal by 1 pixel
    5 Shift copy3 horizontal by 1 pixel

Output to 1080p 444 10 bit (even though it is 11 bit)

at 0.7 diopter it will allow close focus from 0.75 to 1.5m - a perfect supplement.

I just watched one of my old DVDs this weekend. Not a Blu-Ray, just a plain standard definition DVD on a mid-2000s 720P TV. I got sucked into the movie. Never once noticed the lower resolution. Just saying.
