  1. I'm in the same boat here.  Should I save money and pickup a C100 mk1 and then a 5D4 later in the year or go for the C100MK2 and pickup a 5D4 in the Spring next year.  The C100 would mainly be regulated to tripod/monopod event work in lower light situations.  Anything in daylight outdoors/run and gun would be tasked to the XC10.

    The lens isn't plastic.

  3. I've just finished filming a short film.  We used 5D Raw, A7s + speed booster, GH4 + speed booster, and the XC10.  The best looking and "organic moving" footage in my opinion came from the 5D Raw and the xc10 in 4k.  The a7s was the 3rd best and the gh4 was the sharpest "out of camera".  We could have comfortably shot the whole thing on the XC10.

Unsharpened ungraded CLOG frame grabs. Having a 1 inch sensor is no hindrance for a shooter like me...i own multiple cameras and i light my shoots.  I'm invested in canon gear, it uses the same batteries as the 5D3, has good battery run time, doesn't overheat and captures excellent video quality that compliments 5D Raw. I don't have to carry around a 25lb camera bag with various lenses and accessories to be able to shoot dynamically with the xc10.  The only accessory I carry is a variable nd filter.  I like to minize rigging as much as possible and I don't want an xlr input on this form factor, a rode videomic pro is good enough.  The only thing i would like is a constant f/2.8 and true DPAF.  I wouldn't even bother with a C100-300 if it had those 2 features.

  4. In camera sharpness test.  There was a slight error with the video clips.  The first 4 clips are with sharpness to the max and is too sharp...but the rest is with sharpness set at +4.  This should put to rest the idea that this camera is a soft 4k camera.

They have been using it for quite some time with great results. Definetelly shows a segment where the camera is great.

This is mainly a "film maker" forum. But we sometimes seem to forget that not everyone of Panasony and Canikons customers are.

Some are videomakers like Jared and some are still photographers, again like Jarred.

Thats why I sometimes have an issue with the "only an idiot would..", "thats crap because..." and "why does Canon..." type of attitude on every single product that doesnt also serve as a perfect tool for shooting a narrative movie.

Kept my word and returned to the XC10.  I love it.  The first time I had it i didn't play with the setting enough to learn how to shoot with it properly.  It is an awesome little camera that is very underrated. Here are some stills created from its 4k clips.

"Continue to die" ... talk about over statement!

You do realise that the report also says they made a PROFIT of $360m .... Profit, not sales, not income... Profit.

Why do people throw out all logic just because a brand hasn't made the indie camera they want? Yes, they need to diversify, as both the camera and printer businesses are taking a hit due to mobile and internet tech, but they are still a massive company with fingers in all kinds of pies. They are still head and shoulders the pro choice of still shooters and have a heavy involvement in pro AV too. They are beginning to get into the niche imaging markets and no doubt have involvement in stuff like 3D printing and mobile sensor tech.

They might be making less profit in one quarter (you know, 3 months), but dying... haha.... I think people actually want it to be true too, just because they haven't sunk as low in price as Sony and Lumix. Imagine that... wanting a huge brand to die out, just because they don't make the camera that ticks your very specific set of boxes. God love the internet.

"For January-March, operating profit dropped 39 percent to 40.1 billion yen ($361.4 million), the company said. That missed the 67.74 billion yen average of five analyst estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data. Canon said it now expects full-year operating profit of 300 billion yen, lower than a previous forecast of 360 billion yen."

They made $360 million when they expected to make $605 million.  I'm not saying Canon is dying but looking at the imaging systems...a 33% profit drop is not in a favorable direction to be moving.  We'll see that happens next.

Firm trying to diversify away from consumer cameras (Adds segment breakdown, context)

TOKYO, April 26 Japan’s Canon Inc on Tuesday reported a steeper-than-expected fall in first-quarter operating profit on weaker demand for office equipment in emerging markets and slower global sales of compact digital cameras.

The world’s biggest maker of printers and cameras also cut its outlook for the full year ending December.

For January-March, operating profit dropped 39 percent to 40.1 billion yen ($361.4 million), the company said. That missed the 67.74 billion yen average of five analyst estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Canon said it now expects full-year operating profit of 300 billion yen, lower than a previous forecast of 360 billion yen.

Quarterly operating profit from office equipment, its biggest segment, fell 38 percent from a year earlier while profit from imaging systems such as cameras fell 33 percent.

To reduce its reliance on cameras, Canon agreed to buy Toshiba Corp’s medical equipment unit for 665.5 billion yen last month. The deal followed the purchase last May of 85 percent of Swedish video surveillance firm Axis AB.

The company, which earns about 80 percent of revenue overseas, said the yen’s appreciation in the first quarter had a negative impact on earnings.

For the rest of the year, it said it expects the U.S. dollar to trade at an average of 110 yen compared with a previous assumption of 120 yen.

Pretty significant drops.  Seems like Andrew has been dead right about Canon all this time.

I've been thinking of picking up a 5D mark iii over a blackmagic pocket for some months now. Its been really hard to find recent footage from the hacked 5D. I am not chasing resolution I just want quality RAW footage so :

How is the magic lantern hack in 2016 ? Is it more stable than it was when RAW was first introduced to the 5D ? Is the boost in image quality worth it as far as workflow and storage etc. are concerned ? How does it compare to its competitors like blackmagic and Sony ?

I have both. 5DMK3 Raw is very stable with the right cards.  I cannot go back to 8bit for anything except long form events.  The RAW work flow is really not a hassle and it's much like the workflow for handling RAW images. DNG creation is easy with the 5D raw files and from there its the same experience as editing blackmagic DNG files in Davinchi Resolve. If your looking for a raw camera for only video then I would recommend the Blackmagic Pocket ONLY if you purchase a speed booster to go along with it.  With the speed booster you will be able to shoot on par with a 5DMK3 in low light situations. The only weaknesses of the Blackmagic pocket is the chance of moire, poor battery life, horrible audio preamps(only remedied by using a videomic pro with +25 db set).  5D raw weaknesses, poor in camera playback and much shorter record times while using raw.  Below is some 5D Raw footage I shot at 2 weddings in 2015 scaled up to 4K.

  9. Changing Premiere Pro CC 2015's Renderer to Mercury - OpenCL (from CUDA) resulted in real-time playback of 4K material at full resolution! This is in OSX El Capitan, GTX980, latest drivers. Simultaneous playback on a 2nd 4K display didn't slow down.

Adding a third display (1080p HDTV) continued to run without slowdown.

Are you using an external thunderbolt2/USB3 RAID storage setup or is it all internal ssd?

  10. 5D3 Raw is not that difficult to work with at all today.  There is only 1 step (MLV conversion) ahead of it's RAW workflow and it's easy.  Now that you have Davinchi 12 out and MLRAW viewer,SlimRAW, or Rawmagic it's so easy.  Also with Lossless Compressed cinemadng RAW files you save a ton of hd space.  Every time i get footage from it I love it.  Just don't use it for shooting events or long continuous recordings.

  11. Finally I could spend some (very limited) time outside and also some time to hack it together:

Not the best that I could do but gives some additional impression over the capabilities of the XC10 in bright daylight.

Here's a photo of my XC10 ENG configuration that has been tested and hopefully soon will see some real action for a report:

    XC10_ENG_01.jpg

    Cheers!

Ok...now I'm definitely going to add this to my camera bag after seeing more footage.

  12. The "Look Test" video seems to show quite a drastic drop in sharpness in C-Log, indicating there is zero sharpening going on, in camera, compared to the other gamma settings.

I imagine alot of people are shooting C-log and maybe not adding much/any sharpening in post.

It's not NX1 sharp, but the standard gamma seems to suggest it can hit 1DC levels.

Interesting....I'm going to try to add sharpening to some of the footage i have and see what the result is.

  13. The XC10 the worst thing since the Syrian civil war.

Canon should knock off $1000 on the XC10. It's not a bad camera but I feel that it is too soft for an image @ 4K.  I don't think it looks bad....but it doesn't wow you like the detail and clarity of GH4 4k footage.

  14. Could you post a piece of the 4K footage ungraded and in 4K on YouTube? Specifically one from the outdoor (sunlight) and without too much movement like in the beginning of the clip? The way you posted, the footage seems too soft and contrasty. I expected at least the 4K->1080p part to be sharp. Looking at the original 4K footage will help.

It may have been focusing related though since the indoor clip (6:02 onward) looks sharper (although again the focus seems more on her chest than the face) than the outdoor part. The depth of field does look really large, not sure what the settings were.

Overall, I thought it has a pleasing, organic look though it is more like a regular HD DSLR than a 4K camera.

    Here is a 4k version.

I'm inclined to agree with tugela's appraisal of the camera for the most part.  Most of these shots were over exposed and relied on the auto focusing system to pull focus.  I wish I had more personal time to shoot on it during the wedding vs the lesser experienced shooter because if not properly exposed the footage will be softer than normal...but not h264 soft.  You have to set the ND filter and then dial in the exposure and ISO and it's not intuitive.   It's no where near as sharp as GH4 4k footage.  I also agree with the Johnnie Behiri review of this camera in that you have to fiddle with it to get the best footage out of it.  I don't dislike the footage but I definitely would not recommend it as a primary camera.

  15. I rented the XC10 to use to supplement 5D Raw and the Blackmagic Pocket cam on a wedding shoot this past weekend to see how it would preform.  It was used mainly on the DJI Ronin M and handheld in some instances.  I have a ton of footage from it. Some in 4k and some in HD.
    - First lol...the lens does NOT slide out if pointed straight down
    - Clog is my favorite shooting profile.  I would not bother with the others.  It grades pretty well. I had a semi newbie manning the XC10 while i shot on the 5D just incase there was a issue with magic lantern.  The auto focus worked well however the guy filming with it did "not always properly expose".  So there was some blown highlights and I was pissed.  Clog surprisingly allowed me to pull some of it back to an acceptable level in post .  When properly exposed the camera can capture some really nice images.
    - Low light was not 5D level but it wasn't terrible either.
    - HD is really nice and sharp.
    - Audio was recorded with a Rode Stereo Videomic X
    - Lightly graded in Adobe Premiere CC
    - Some audio is muted for privacy
    - 4K compressed down to 1080 starts @ 5:00 - 6:30

Here some of the footage from it.

  16. So Resolve lite takes the DNG files generated? Edits, colours, and works with it?

Any other video editors other resolve that take the DNGs? My PC tower has no OpenCL support so Resolve doesn't like it, I'd need a new editing tower just for resolve + buying the Canon.

But if resolve/or any editors do take DNGs directly that would make the workflow just like any other camera with the extra process of dragging the raw. file to the raw2dng.exe command, which takes minutes.

No sure about the PC.  On Mac I use RawMagic drag and drop to convert MLV or the Raw file in to DNGs.  Very easy.  If i want to preview before converting....I can use MLV viewer to playback, grade and export the MLV file to either DNGs or or mov format and grade in Resolve lite.  It really comes down to your system on how easy it is.

  17. dude, i won't explain all those things for a fourth time.  after reading andrews article and all the XC10 canon specs in fact you already had 5 chances to realize that this is not a drone camera.  if you think it is, because you only shoot in no windy places and between mid and tele range, then go ahead and buy this item. if this thread didnt make you, but a lot of other potential customers think more critically about canon's product strategies, my only intention to write here has been successful.

Guess no one bothered to look at the video I posted earlier. It seemed to work well for that guy.

  18. I completely disagree with the article and comments here.

Neither of us have used the camera not to mention tested it, so my word is as good as you, as in both are completely based upon a spec sheet.

What I take from that sheet are the following points missed here:

-The XC10 has a completely new 1" sensor with 12mp resolution and 12 stops of DR (C300 level claimed by Canon), this is a sensor developed from the ground up for videp performance at 1:1 4K readout, meaning much larger photo-sites and better lowlight performance and better DR than the old 20MP photo sensor that downscales to 1080p, this sensor alone if delivers what its specs imply, would be alone worth the premium over the so called alternatives (RX10/FZ1000/X70/AX100). It could simply have a significantly better image quality when tested, but we haven't done that yet, just going by the specs it will.

-The colour performance of the XC10 is not touched by the competetion mentioned earlier, this means Canon's famous Colour science AND the amount of colour information stored, it's 305mbps 4:2:2 4K and 4:2:2 10bit. While the competetion mentioned are 24mbps 4:2:0 8bit AVCHD codecs.

-This codec difference puts it in an entirely different market and entirely different use base, as in it's the only one of these cameras that is approved by broadcasters for Full HD aqusition, and has a dedicated 4:2:2 50mbps 1080p mode for that in an MXF wrapper, in other words, this camera has a broadcast market non of the other cameras will ever touch.

-The 2500$ price includes a 500$ 64GB CFast2 Card and Cfast reader, so the camera body is actually closer to 1900$, not that much higher than the 1100$ RX10.

These are the broad important points not mentioned in the article. Let's get into the smaller advantages the XC10 has:

    -Rotatable grip,

    -Flipping VF and larger LCD

    -Canon Log matching CX00 gamma

    -HDMI 4K 10bit 4:2:2 uncompressed output

-Video sensor with 12mp vs the 20mp one, 1:1 4K video, 12 stops, better lowlight, less aliasing

-Broadcast approved codec off the cards

-Both Slots one for Cfast and SD

-1dx build quality standard as claimed by Westfall

    -305mbps 4K 4:2:2 internal XFAVC codec

-Continuous recording non limited to 29mins

-It uses the same codec, the same bit rate, the same colour science, the same recording media, resolution, the same LOG gamma as the C300 mkII, making it specifically perfect as a B cam to intercut with)

    -Usabe AF system

    (and a few others)

Non of the competetive cameras has any of these.

Are these worth the price premium of the body (1900 camera body + high end CFast card + reader)? hell yes for many.

These are what it has over the RX10/FZ1000/x70/AX100, there are of course the points these cameras have over the XC 10, which your article only mentions, disregarding what the XC10 has over then, making it completely uninformative and incomplete. For all we know the new sensor and the new lens optical performance and Log gamma + codec could blow away the rx10/fz1000 image quality off the water, but we don't know yet. So please stop bashing cameras and giving negative comments before knowing what it's capable of AT ALL, not even reading the spec sheet fully.

Agreed.  I think people will be surprise at how well this camera preforms.  I remember when the C100 came out and everyone trashed it's image.  I'm definitely going to pick one up vs Frankensteining a blackmagic 4k micro...which after you add the cost of out lens, monitor/recorder....is pretty close to the XC10's price point, not as compact, and needs longer setup time to shoot.

    https://vimeo.com/124969658

I think alot of people will be surprised at how good this camera is.  It hits all the check marks for a specialty cam i'm looking for and I don't think the price is to much for what it offers.  I'm not looking for another interchangeable lens camera....
