  1. Canon's Duel Pixel auto focus reliability FTW.  Anything else is a risk.  Also most "high end pros" do multiple takes on controlled shoots with multiply angle shots so I doubt they would care about auto focus too much unless it's follow focusing on a subject moving toward or away from the camera....even then I'd only rely on Canon's auto focus.  But the high enders are shooting on film, red, or arri.

Just beeing curious: How does the 1080p-ML-footage looks, when upscaled to 4K? Is the look better when

    A. You upscale to 4K in post or
    B. When you display the 1080p-ML-footage on a 4K TV (as most 4K TVs do a very good upscale of FullHD footage) ?

    5D RAW upscaled to 4K

5D RAW upscaled to 4K + a few XC10 4k shots and Blackmagic pocket cinema camera shots on the bus, and car dialogue scene.

Youtuber Luigi Baccino posted this DNG 14 bit lossless images resolution: 3840x1440.

Lets pray to the ml gods that they get this preview working for at least around 3k.

Indeed.  The image quality has really spoiled me on what's currently out there now.  The 4k at 12fps is spectacular....it is an absolute tragedy as to what these canon dslrs are capable of.

  4. Was on a makeup shoot the yesterday and decided to test how well I could use the 3K Raw mode on a job. The primary camera was the C100MK2 and after I captured the main shots I broke out the 5DMK3 to experiment.  I captured about an hour worth of footage in 3K.  Resolutions higher than HD are not recommended on productions until the liveview is fixed.  You can only effectively shoot static shots or shots that move but stay within a fixed depth of field range as the choppy grey/color liveview is nearly impossible to use to follow focus on moving subjects.

Well, it only stopped recording once with the recording limit warning asking me if my card is formatted as ExFat.

Can using a card not formatted as ExFat cause any other issue other than recording length?

I'm using the March 30th builds. I just noticed the issues. I was planning on doing more research tomorrow, just thought it might be a common issue.

The only thing I can think of is, even though I could not format the card as ExFat, I did erase the files on my computer with my previous tests... whereas with this test I reformatted in camera.

I don't think it can.  It should only limit you to 4GB clips.

I guess I'm trying to see the upside of it, since one could get raw from blackmagic without so much hassle, for not so more money (especially the 2.5K). If one already has a 5D III, completely makes sense.

No moiré patterns, better low light performance, more camera shooting agility than the Blackmagic cinema cameras, and the ability to record to CF cards with possibly smaller files with 14-bit lossless compression.  Once they fix optimize the live preview for the 2k-3k resolution ranges and implement mlv audio,  i'm probably going to make that my primary narrative capture format.

So, I know it's still early and a1ex seems to be making strides as the hours pass, but do you guys think there is value with this new breakthrough in a real production? At first thought, I like the 60p 1080p and also using the 3K for wide establishing shots... if you have a wide enough lens. Anything else I'm missing?

Also, my 5D3 is being delivered tomorrow, obviously I'm not going to mess with this update for a while, but to the regular ML users, do you have any links that will help get me started... am shooting a short film with it in 2 weeks, so I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the OT.

Not at it's current level of development. All I need is a real time color preview while shooting and a continuous 3k or 2k recording format implemented like the 1080 HD MLV format and could take it from there.

  8. Here are a few more test screenshots. I use 10x zoom to carefully check focus.  The images are spectacular. Im only getting about 38 frames @3072x1660 and about 250 @3072x1308.

It's recording 3072x1286 continuously (2.39:1) with a 1.87x crop @ 80MB/s 14bit lossless. Only 2 issues ATM: the useless greyscale preview as @hyalinejim mentioned, and the menu is quite buggy. The other thing is lensing; the Tokina 11-16mm isn't great wide open, it's sharp but I don't like what it does to highlights. The Sigma 20mm f/1.8 is a lot nicer at f/2.8 but it's not very wide at around 37mm with the crop.

I'm in 1.13 and getting pink colored fames using MIRaw Viewer....but it's only with the 14bit lossless setting enabled.

If the budget is only $5000 i'd recommend this kit.

    Canon C100 MK1 - $2499
    Sigma 70 - 200mm f/2.8 - $1299
    Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 - $799
    Rode Videomic Pro - $229
    SanDisk 128 GB Extreme Pro - $66

    Total: $4892

    I would also include:
1 spare Wasabi Power Batteries for C100 - $30 and your good to shoot all day long.
    1 Z96 LED light(on camera light) - $70
     2x NP-F970 Battery + DC01 Travel and Car Charger Adapter - $45

    Total: $5037

Properly exposed C-log on the C100 II looked to me, with the right lens, every bit as good as the 5d3 in raw.  I shot the latter for 2+ years (started in about May of 2013).  At the end of the day there's just way too many compromises with the 5d3 raw - tedious workflow (comparatively speaking), camera lock ups, audio sync headaches *if* ML raw even decides to record audio (yes I've used modern nightly builds).  Reliability?  Don't even compare the two.  No instant backup, no ND filters, no XLR audio, no Autofocus, shorter record times, more expensive (1000x or faster) CF cards, super dodgy 3x zoom mode that locked me up often.

If I'm shooting something I can do 10 takes on the 5d3 would be a good choice.  If it's a bride walking down the aisle, 100 out of 100 times I'd grab the c100.  If I need continuous AF, good audio, long battery life, long record times, quick turnaround, (you see where I'm going here) I'll grab the c100.  With the Sigma 18-35 1.8 it's like 27-54 2.8 of full frame, and you can still throw that 85 1.2 and blow the hell out of the background on both cameras.  Hell in the summer I had the 5d3 OVERHEAT shooting ML raw.  Never seen the c100 hiccup ever.   That image does have the magic sauce, but so does the c100 in C-Log.  I prefer it over the 1dc due to all the headaches.

No reliable 1080p30 or 1080p60 raw on the 5d3; c100 II has this.  I hate looking at sports shot in 24p, don't you?

I can go out with the 10-18 STM, 18-135 and 55-250 and shoot just about anything.  Dead silent AF with face tracking, great audio, great image and reliable.  No menu diving to toggle the WB, ISO, F/Stop, better focus peaking and punch in while recording.  An actual EVF instead of strapping on a damn loupe!  :)  But hey...if you must have static shots with the FF DOF and raw, the 5d3 is the only thing in this price range.

When properly exposed it does look every bit as good...even wide dynamic range looks superb. The C100mk2 is $4000 and the 5D3 is under $3k so that's why I haven't really tried to mention it much.  I don't have the C100mk1 but i hear it also has a great image just a different color cast.  I still cannot rank it's image as higher than a raw image due to post flexibility of 8bit vs 14bit.  Audio can be record while shooting in raw with the via MLV by enabling the MLV audio module.  The locking up issues are often caused by having to many modules enabled, card filling up while recording, card speed dropage or a battery issue.  With my configuration don't get any locking up issues.  Usability wise the C100mk2 is comprehensively no question much better to use.....better than any dslr form camera I think if you don't need stills. It's my favorite video camera to shoot on and makes me want to by a C300mk2. I did have my c100mk2 lock up on me 2 days ago where I had to take the battery out and reinsert it to get it back functioning while shooting..it was a 3rd party battery.

last thing I shot with the xc10 before I sold it

Was this originally shot in 4K or HD.  I decided to upload some more footage from mine.  I'm still happy with it's performance and I don't shot clog anymore with it.

Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining about the image, the c100 is a good image. I just prefer the 5D III RAW image over the C100 (could be just a personal thing, but that is just how I feel about it). It could be the full frame look, It could be the lack of pro lighting. But I ofter find myself just shooting run and gun at night. And though the iso on the Cx00 can be cranked higher, I feel like the 5D III RAW has some secret sauce on it and works just better for my taste as its softer then the sharp Cx00 series.

I own both cameras as well and definitely think the 5D3RAW image is more impressive looking.  I think the C100mk2 looks sharper overall due to it not being a full frame camera and not having a filter on it like the 5D3 has which needs post sharpening.  Below are some 5D Raw dng files with a graded versions.

    You've used the GH5???

No...that was an oversight.  I added the GH5 to the top of the list after I finished the post and reread the OP and saw the part about ignoring camera release date.
