Zach reacted to VanWeddings in Holymanta - the ND filter lens adapter
i've used variable nd filters from the expensive singh-ray to cheaper lcw. with shorter focal lengths loss in sharpness is very minor across the board. the more expensive ones hold up better past 70mm. they all have a bit of color cast but it's correctable in grading.
not sure if the effect in the sample is from the optics or not. i really like the idea. unfortunately i prefer to mount ef lenses on my canon bodies and m43 lenses on my m43 bodies.

Zach reacted to Wit in An important video for anyone on the internet
Well said but as a filmmaker I also like people to say what could be better next to the good things - only then you can improve next time.
It's called feedback ;)

Zach got a reaction from Axel in An important video for anyone on the internet
I have a background in music performance and education, and this has been going around social media sites between my music friends. However I can't help but think it is also incredibly relevant to those of us in the video/film realm.
Just some food for thought. I hope its encouraging

This looks a little gimmicky to me. Guess I'll have to wait and hear it before I pass judgement. The addition of knobs over buttons for level adjustments is welcome

Zach reacted to Calvinius in Thank you
Having researched background information on filming with Four Thirds all over the Internet over the course of the last six months, I found the posts and comments being posted here in the EOSHD forum extremely helpful (as well as - of course - Andrew's genuine articles). They really helped me not only making a choice about the system I want to use / am using now (GH3), but for example also with a view to other equipment. And I am sure that I will find plenty of inspirational posts also in future. So I simply want to say "thank you" to you guys and girls (woman) - I feel that is more than appropriate. :-)

Sony seem to love making announcements about announcements, show us a product with a time frame or go home.

Zach reacted to Huuow in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera S16 Crop Factor & Choosing Lens
question is, if you want the look of a 24mm full frame, why not go 24mm full frame?

Zach reacted to Rungunshoot in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera S16 Crop Factor & Choosing Lens
I don't think anything is going to give you that look on the BMPCC. I've been researching the same thing, and the focal length of lens you're seeking is 8mm. While those lenses exist for s16mm, they would need impossibly large apertures to equal the wide-yet-shallow DOF in your sample images.
You might get something vaguely similar with this combo:
m43 speed booster (doesn't exist yet)
voigtlander 17.5mm f/.95
That would something be like a 35mm f/1.4 on full-frame.
As far as I know, nothing is equally fast and wide in the m43 arena.

Zach got a reaction from P337 in Digital S16 marketing, Black Magic vs. Digital Bolex
As far as im concerned, The digital bolex folks have no room to talk until they actually release a camera. -
Zach reacted to Andrew Reid in Digital S16 marketing, Black Magic vs. Digital Bolex
Digital Bolex has global shutter, Pocket Cinema Camera doesn't.
Since neither camera has yet shipped neither company has much room to talk! ;)
Let's wait and see on this one.
I personally think DB are doing a good job.

Zach reacted to Kingswell in Why Blackmagic will ship in July
ah ok i thought they were taking the existing sensor and cropping. I still am incredibly sceptical about this July date based on past experience. They will now have 4 lines to manufacture, and although they are slightly more experienced with camera building it's still a small frame of time to get everything going. From what i've read (and again correct me if i'm wrong) they're still working on the 4K version so a final product isn't even ready to manufacture as of now.

Zach reacted to Andrew Reid in C mount lenses
I've had mixed success with c-mount on the GH2 in 16mm crop mode.
Be aware that a lot of 16mm c-mount lenses won't cover Super 16mm especially the zooms, and that a lot of c-mount lenses are designed for digital 2/3" or smaller CCD sensors especially the newer CCTV stuff.
You should look to high quality vintage Super 16mm glass from the 60's and 70's but the prices are already quite inflated.
Switar 26mm F1.1 is very nice. Some of the Computar TV lenses from the 80's and 90's are very sharp.

Zach reacted to Ernesto Mantaras in Blackmagic Production Camera 4K shocks NAB - 4K for $4k, Compressed Raw, Super 35mm AND global shutter
It's funny how now cameras are the accesories of lenses.
I'm actually really excited about these two new cameras and what they'll mean for the competition!

Zach reacted to mike_tee_vee in Live coverage - Blackmagic Production Camera 4K and Pocket Cinema Camera
For the low-budget film maker, the Pocket Cinema Camera is a "game changer."
If you're a GH2 user looking for much more DR and detail in the shadows, I can't see the GH3 bringing much new to the table in terms of image quality. By comparison, the GH3 is looking like Panasonic's 5D mk III: an expensive incremental update that, while competent in its own right, fails to fundamentally change the industry to the same degree as its predecessor.

Just more, not better. That's up to the lens.

Zach reacted to Chrad in New Blackmagic Camera
The Pocket Cam looks shockingly, shockingly tiny. Like it might actually fit in pockets.
Let's hope they have cooling under control.

Zach reacted to JHines in New Blackmagic Camera
"I think I'm going to pick up a C300 for $16,000 instead of the $4,000 4k BMC," said no one ever. Cannot believe a 4 grand camera outclassed Canon's ENTIRE cinema line. What a joke. Time to step it up Canon. You now actually have to try hard.
