Good luck! I'm afraid you'll need it. Realize that the camera probably is going to give an error when you take off the lens. First thing compact cameras do after powering on is check the lens. If its stuck you'll get an error and the camera is useless. Just removing the lens most probably results in the same error.

/Edit: Uploaded new video with correct contrast.

Here you go. Not the best test situation, had to go to iso 800 to shoot at f/2.8.
Included some footage I shot before as well in the end (with 12-35mm X)
Didn't bother to include +5 contrast, probably nobody wants that anyway.

I used a 50mm Minolta MD Rokkor f/1.7 @ f/2.8 which I bought for €5 on eBay. You get some free moire included. Safe to say More is not a 12-35mm X only thing.

Settings:
1080P MOV ALL-I 72Mbit
25 fps
50mm Minolta MD f/1.7 @ f/2.8
ISO 800
1/50 sec

I left out the Custom profile. It just saves one of the other profiles with your contrast/sharpness preferences as a preset. It's not a different profile.

I am guessing, that, there are many opportunities, for start-ups, on sites like Kickstarter, to create a camera, that will bring to the consumers, something, that they really want. Rather than force feeding them, on bullshit.
Is that what consumers really want? We, a bunch of enthusiasts on a very specific video oriented forum, aren't very representative of the market.

It's easier to market a list of new features (like wifi) to the big public than a better codec. A bunch of new features doesn't cannibalize your own products. An amazing video optimized canon dslr is kinda out of the question now with their cinema line.

'We' shouldn't expect much from such companies. The big ones play it safe, aim at the mass market, the big numbers, thats where the money is, not in the niche of us filmmakers. Nikon with their consumer oriented mirrorless system, small sensor so it doesn't cut into their dslr market too much. Canon goes kind of the same way, don't expect a high end mirrorless camera anytime soon from them.

The only big company that doesn't care much about cannibalisation is Sony. And they are smart not to care, because if they don't cannibalize their own stuff, someone else will. But that might be mainly because Sony is relatively new in the dslr/photography market. People who've been with Canon or Nikon for many years are stubborn and not very likely to switch.

Wow. That would have been amazing.
Yes. It would have been.

And all the photographers who don't care about video would have been complaining about the premium price for all this video stuff they don't need. Even if the extra's come in a grip there would have been R&D costs, the processor has to be more powerfull etc...

Sharpness -5 looks a bit too unsharp for my taste, so I leave it at -2. But the difference is very subtle.

Color at -5 takes out a lot of color, so I'm not sure if it's the best to always have it at -5. Maybe also better to leave it around -3 or -2, so you don't loose to much color information.

I have to admit.. I just bought a GH2 second hand. If the GH3 would be actually available right now I might have considered it. I really like it. Going on holidays soon and planning to use it, so I didn't want to wait for the GH3. Also the price difference is big.. Bought the GH2 body for a bit more than 1/3 of the GH3 body price.

On the negative note, this also opens the doors to a new era of random cat videos on youtube. Some guys just like shooting doorknobs, corners, porchlights, etc.. Calling it a low light test and seeing how many comments they can get, lol. Like facebook. Vimeo needs a "like" button..
So what? Let people enjoy their hobby.

If they don't shoot their cat with a BMCC they'll do it with a 5D Mark III or their iPhone and put it on Vimeo / YouTube as well. A lot of people enjoy buying high end expensive gear. It's good for the economy. At least the cat video's now will have a great dynamic range (and crappy hdr over the top post processing because of the raw capabilities ;))

By the way, Vimeo has a 'Love' button already.

The sensor is 4:3, but in video mode it uses a 16:9 crop. No difference there from the GH2.

You can shoot 4:3 with the hacked Gh2 but the quality is limited, mjpeg and 30 fps only.

Yeah the dynamic range was crushed in the previous video. This one is correct, same as the original files, also the screenshots are correct and in higher contrast.

I like the natural profile. Usually I leave sharpness at -2. The difference between -5 and +5 is not that big by the way.
Color at -5 is also pretty 'strong', maybe somewhere around -3 or -2 is preferable.

I also have the impression the compression on Vimeo is less harsh. Especially Vimeo 1080p looks much better than YouTube 1080p. I'll be uploading some original footage onto a ftp soon, via a helpful member here. That'll do :)

Julian, could you please compose identical frames (by mouthing the 2 cameras together, on the same Tripod, or 2 tripods, placed closeby), also, thereby shooting the Exactly same thing, at the Exact same time.

I have acces to two 14-140mm's, but not this weekend. And since my adapters are missing.. i'm stuck to testing the 12-35mm against a 40mm prime, which is quite a difference. Also, the lack of multi-aspect sensor makes quite a difference.. The GH2 is quite wider.

I was doing some low light tests, the findings were quite interesting...but I think I fucked up the aperture so I have to reshoot it. I'll get back with some screenshots tonight.

Here's an example of the live view image before recording and during record. This was at iso 3200 (or could have been 1600), with the natural profile everything at -5. The difference is very big..

http://www.nikon.com/about/ir/ir_library/result/qa/2012_3q/index.htm

Q: What can you tell about the sales of the Nikon 1 series?

A: Although we received some negative feedback in connection with the size of the image sensor for Nikon 1 at the time of launch, as customers experienced the quality of the AF response time, movie recording, picture quality and body size, the Nikon 1 has been highly appreciated. As a result, the J1 model achieved top market share in the United States, from 11 countries across Europe and in China for the month of December and we believe this product will trigger steady demand in so-called mirrorless interchangeable lens camera market. We plan to continue to expand on this market by adding more attractive features and building on our product lineup in the future.

Anyway.. I'd love a beefed up Nikon 1 for video. At first I was disappointed with the crop factor, but actually it's pretty fun with C-mount glass and other exotic stuff. If it would have the video quality of a GH2 or video specs like this new sensor it would be killer :)

More likely is a V2 with some fancy art filters and minimal updates :(

Julian reacted to QuickHitRecord in Velbon SPT-1 - Add rod support?
I posted this months ago but only just came figured out a simple solution:

Here is the part that you need to buy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270941674813

Specifically this one because the center groove on the top shelf is long enough to cover two of the three Velbon mounting holes located on the bottom of the main assembly. You could do it with a cheaper one (there are many out there, just search for "DSLR base plate"), but you probably will not get full hole coverage and you may have twisting issues.

I also put two screws in the Manfrotto quick release plate to prevent twisting (I have been doing that a lot lately). Now it easily slides into any Manfrotto fluid head with no chance of twisting.

I took out the adjustable-height riser and re-bolted it together so that it would be more compact, but you can always leave it in if you want to.

This method is useful for putting a matte box in front of a Lomo square front, a Hypergonar HiFi-2, or any oversized lens. You could also mount a follow focus to use with your lens while keeping the ease-of-use afforded by the Velbon.

I hope that this is helpful to someone.

Ah I see the point. It's 2/3 fstop indeed.

Fuji X to M43 is impossible, because the flange distance from the Fuji X mount is shorter than M43.
Samsung NX is 25.50 mm vs 19.25 mm for M43. So it in theory it should be possible with an adapter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance
Also confirmed here: http://www.similaar.com/foto/lensmount/lensmount.html

Anyway, i can't find such an adapter either, except for a rumor from 2010..
