andy lee reacted to craigbuckley in is there a reason I shouldn't buy the slr magic 12mm lens for my gh2?
thanks a ton guys. I am going to go with the SLR...

I have 2 other questions I was wondering if anyone could help with:

1. I'm going to get a "standard" lens as well and I think I am going to get the canon FD 24mm or the canon FD 28mm (I am going with the canon FD's because I already have that adapter for the gh2) - are these decent lenses? Of the two, which would be better? (should i just spend more and get that C mount pentax cosmicar 25mm?)

2. And my second is kind of unrelated but I still can't find an answer. Can someone recommend a good viewfinder for the gh2 that will help block the sun? I use the EVF thats built in but I can't see what I am shooting when its really sunny out so I need SOMETHING to help me shoot outside and see what I'm shooting.

you need a 24mm lens as this is the approximate Full Frame equivilant of a 50mm prime.
I use Yashica 24mm f2,8
and Sigma 24mm f2.8
plus c mount lenses
Pentax cosmicar 25mm f1.4
Wesley 24mm f1.4 (actually more like f1.8 or f2)

the c mount are CCTV lenses and fast and great for shooting at night outside.

you hardly loose any light......1/4 stop maximim it is very small

and yes this does let you get wide fast primes .......it works very well !
especially on a GH2 where fast primes are expensive.

I'm not sure that 4K or 48p are the problem here.... Film has often resolved that sort of resolution and 48p, other than less motion blur, shouldn't affect the set/make up too much.

I think the bigger problem is that 3D tends to rely on a deeper DOF, so more of the set/actors are in focus for prolonged periods of time.

What camera equipment did you choose ?
CBC : As concerns the camera, given the limited number of spotlights and Thomas’ wish to film in an almost documentary-like style, we first thought we would film on 35mm. But we didn’t have the budget for it. The Alexa took the place of a 35mm camera, and I had to adapt my style to that device. As far as lenses are concerned, I wanted to film with Cooke S2 lenses, but the sensitivity of the sensor to the colour red and the lack of uniformity within that series made me change my mind. After a couple of tests, I chose to film with the new Cooke Panchros, a series of lenses that reproduces a soft “vintage” feeling and that only open at 2.8. As I was saying, Thomas Vinterberg is very close to his characters, and the number one priority for me in terms of lighting was enhancing faces and eyes.

yes you can use many old 35mm camera lenses on the GH3 with an adaptor
I use

Contax N Mount
Milnolta M mount
Canon FD mount
Pentax K mount
Contax Yashica mount
Fujinon x mount
ENG B4 Mount
M42 mount
Praktica B Mount
Canon EF Mount

etc etc

all work on the GH3 in fully manual mode
you set the f stop and focus yourself

Andy,

I'm curious to get your opinion on some lens questions if you're open to it (or anyone else for that matter.

1) I"m about to get the GH3 and feel open to getting one of the Voigtlanders. Do you have a preference for the 17mm vs the 25mm in regards to what would be more useful?

2) If one was to use old manual 35mm slr film lenses for the GH3 do you think the Canon FD line is the best to go with considering price, quality and adaptability to m43? For example, I have a few old Pentax K mount lenses but wasn't sure if there were issues adapting this to m43.

You think the RED1-M was a better sensor than the F35?

Sony and Arri have been ahead of RED on sensor tech... RED just used resolution as the ultimate goal, whereas ARRI and Sony concentrated on DR, colour, skin tones....

Please note, i'm not discussing prices, fps, raw etc.... Just the sensor tech and Jim Jannard's claim that RED are the most invested.

i like RED products, but....

"RED is more invested in sensor development than ARRI or Sony"?

Really, care to share the proof, as ARRI are kicking their ass with current sensors. Sony's F55 has 14 stops with a global shutter....

I actually think Jim is spot on here, and Dragon looks amazing.

That part is such an important differentiating factor in a camera. If you want to see something stupid look at Sony. They gave their best sensor technology to Nikon (D800) and put a lousy moire riddled 24MP chip in their OWN camera (A99, VG900) which isn't as good on the stills side either. It is like they wanted to lose? Canon on the other hand will develop one truly good sensor every 3 years and try to shoehorn it into 10 different products to make as much money as possible. Incredibly boring. Jim is also correct in his reference to Canon's fabrication process - it is old by modern semiconductor standards. Panasonic and Olympus seem happy meanwhile to be also-rans and buy Sony sensors, this despite the fact Panasonic had a cutting edge CMOS program of their own. Baffling. How can they ever hope to overcome Canon, Nikon and Sony if they can't out perform them on image quality? Fuji innovate on the sensor side - but sadly not on the business side. They had the chance to replace their film stock with a digital equivalent and didn't. Happy to let their cinema business die along with Kodak. Again - baffling.

The Germans have it right. Leica with CMOSIS and Arri. The Japanese don't seem to have a clue at the moment, maybe it is the economy.

Today there is still no better option then hacked GH2 with Vanilla or Canis Majoris settings. Price for the camera and image quality. Nothing else matters. Look at this and this for example.

+1 for a GH2.... It's a sweet camera, if you can't make something great with that, you can't make something great, full stop. For the money paid, it still surprises me every time I check out my footage.

markm quotes:

"For me the BMC is a better camera (than the F55) that happens to be a fraction of the price."
"They use 35mm cameras on big productions and in years gone by without monitors or video assist."
"As for Jello and global shutter. Come on No one really notices this stuff anyway."
"16bit? Makes no difference No one can see any imporvements."
"How about listening to the truth which is the BMC shoots RAW so does the F55. SO you get the same picture with BOTH."
"There is not a rational argument to choose anything other than a BMC.""dont try to make yourself look an expert and me a wannabe or a fanboy" You're right, we're the ones who made ourselves look like losers. "To those who get a BMC. You literally got yourself a baby Alexa." You know babies can't do grownup work, right? :)  But I gotta give it to you, you did get something right: "This is what I hate about forums as they destroy the truth in favour of fanboyism"

Canon FD lenses are very good ! and cheap as they do not fit Canon EF cameras like the 5D 550 etc
so they are very very good value for a GH2 micro 4/3 camera
and very sharp!!

Canon FD Lenses are used by Hollywood films especially for their crash cameras ie Eyemos
