He can do whatever he wants. What about the readers out (t)here? What about disinformation or let's use some harder terminology: FUD *poop* You know people read. You know sales go down. You know R&D investment follows the curve. Hybrid gear follows up. And price for expensive gear and ENG cameras I personally find a minus for creative filmmaking art follow the rule. Economies of scale are a bitch, you know, we know : ) You've already accused me to be much defensive on GH5. Listen, I am not paid by Panasonic but I believe they could wire me indeed... LOL My friendly beef with wolf33d I don't know the name but his alias is old. It includes any piece of new gear he immediatly bashes through his posting because doesn't match HIS needs or liking without the necessary learning about -- most part of time, still when they are literally specs on paper (let alone distinct lens AF performance, different settings combination or shooting setups): GH5, Mavic... not only Panasonic stuff; not fanboy here, I'm sorry, I am brand agnostic since ever : ) and you can find me to defend Sony (my 1st love), Canon (my 1st DSLR and 1st reason why I moved away from REDs to here) or any other major or small workshop *a bit harsh to use the word for some vaporware at times* the usual under the perspective from someone used to read you two. BTW, here's one now directly addressed to you, Glenn: you're so picky on GH5 flaws. What about your love about that JVC toy? I posted that test full of issues. You still praise the thing or added no word on that *sigh* go figure if those were GH5 issues instead... LOL You remind me what or who? Myself when I try to look for some alternative to mainstream. But, hybrid devices like 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording + 4K/60p + IBIS + complex AF (it doesn't matter how rough is) are far to be other than fragile and innovative market experiment yet. Nevermind, it should be your creative mind of a screenwriter to talk. Fair enough. Our posts say too much about us, though. That's for sure! ;-)

Feel free to add whatever piece of gear you feel like may be useful to you or other people or then your comment. Here's to begin with:

This one here from the other threads too? Have you followed the comments section as well? And about those GH5 tips? You know a camera requires time and workaround for optimization... No, Jon said it seemed 480p instead... Can I add some criticism to a personal level without look like to be a jerk or even offend you? I notice your posts for awhile enough to dare myself to feel I know a bit of you or your approach to stuff in general, you know? And you know what I feel? You're often superficial or too quick to jump for conclusions of your own... Maybe good for a gambler or a soccer goalkeeper for example : ) Never for filmmaking. It doesn't matter how good scenery or your capture/edit is :-)
-
Have you seen these tips? And next page too without mention the firmware to come. On the Mavic side, these 3 (!) threads:
-
Sorry me, but I guess that could be neat if from inside a moving car as for instance. Artifacts party? Probably, but more suitable testing :-)
-
The slower to slowest settings in the minus range. Possible to fairly get on GH5?
-
I know. But from minute 7:20 on, MY tested tap-to-focus but only based on the fastest settings for GH5 (just bias by a Sony supporter IMHO and as it is possible to follow up): Brand wars aside (not my beach at all) I wonder about the slowest settings on GH5 for touchscreen focus instead. No one was able to show me yet if there is (or not) any focus hunting on the slowest settings with tap-to-focus.
-
Thanks guys for your input. Actually I like options. Not every time AF or manual. To each situation its own. I think I can't shoot without any one of both. Even though, most part of cameras used for narrative work, including by myself, are fully manual. Touchscreen focus is one of my favs for a simple reason. I don't like artificial intelligence on command : ) Really... focus select is part of shooter's work :-D Have you tested the slowest settings in order to prevent focus hunting with tap-to-focus, Ken? Have you seen this MY's test?
-
So, add tap-to-focus and you're ready to be free of background pulsing or am I dreaming over here?
-
...play a role to minimize or increment the issue, depending on the way it is addressed more or less obviously :-)
-
Not GH5 here yet but almost 3 decades of cameras experience from Super 8 along 16mm/Super16 and 35mm film without mention the video and broadcast worlds since SD to HDCAM or the introduction of digital cinema, not only based on RED camera(s)... ; ) Nevermind, you're right: shallow DOF can minimize the issue but I'd love to hear more directly from GH5 users on topic in the meantime.
-
Right and you look like to quote me : D I just try to figure out the chances on getting the sweet spot also in order to prevent focus hunting based on such technique: AF lock + using touchscreen to select focus but avoiding those irritating AF microadjustments to include not only static subjects.
-
I'd love to see this one on AF lock + tap-to-focus without pulsing in the background...
-
Well, no need for anything really elaborated : ) Simple stuff might be rather useful all the time. I bet that "nope" up there @Orangenz is because the workaround may work out even when the subject moves. I guess the key should be not let pulsing to pop up in the background (even though, my wondering if focus hunting issues are addressed with the slowest settings) and 'tell' the camera through touchscreen where to put the focus.
-
Would be interesting to see a video example, can you?
-
I guess with AF lock and touchscreen focus altogether we can track the subject going with tap-to-focus any time even when the subject moves. With no pulsing for background. I also want to believe it is possible to avoid autofocus hunting on subject with the slowest settings. Without mention to push and hold the AF button in manual mode. Or am I wrong here?
-
@Arikhan @Ken Ross Not GH5 here yet but I guess both tap-to-focus + AF lock used together can totally solve the pulsing issue or not?
-
You funny.... I see next time I can't recommend you anymore a capture device to your disliking or you'll risk to use it again ; ) This time twice (GH5 & Mavic! WOW) -- hope you don't operate the same with the best 2nd half of a man *cough cough* Nevermind... Your videos in a way or another always save the grace :-)
-
I also second they should simplify as rule number one instead. These cameras seem more programming than anything else, mostly photography (stills or motion).
-
Sure Ken. Meant focus hunting there. The camera doesn't guess by herself. So, as Brownstone also concurs the rule we've been addressed on these boards and even Yuryev and the Luminary Linaschke (PhotoJoseph) have ignored, tap-to-focus is your closer friend to follow.
-
Good question. I guess it is only a matter of choice, that is, the need of human intervention vs artificial intelligence too. If you notice on the tree example, the machine/algorithm has no clue which subject to focus. Antos explains it pretty straightforward here at this point: Hence the good chances a real improvement may hopefully be implemented by firmware update, now practically announced and @ brand top-level BTW. Meaningful IMHO. Without mention the touchscreen focus workaround.
-
Here's another one: "So in conclusion move the camera and use touch tracking AF mode" ~ Tom Antos in comments section: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Aswksw6eNJk
-
In conclusion, Brownstone and Antos testing confirm the need to lock the focus either on camera or tripod to prevent hunting. That's the key.
-
Yet, to each its own... Not the best of tests at all (...) but confirms some accurate principle: each setup/lens requires a/'the' setting by its own (combo is the word).
-
Where tap-to-focus stands as one of the finest workarounds for obvious AF limitations on GH5. Especially on tripod setup -- take a look from minute 05:09 on:
