1. In that ISO test video, you can see a lot more detail and less compression noise with the GH3. The tree branches are more defined. But I'd like to know how a hacked GH2 would compare. I know it'll be close, but I do agree with the colors too. GH2 is too clinical and that make sense with the green hue. I think the GH3 going towards magenta is good, comes close to what Canon does which I like a lot. I wish they would do a test with people. I think Philip Bloom did an ISO test in a bar for the D800 or D4? That was a great test to see how skin tones look at insane ISOs. In any case, good video and I look forward to the GH3 soon!
2. I wish the Panasonic 45mm Leica was a great macro. But I think the minimum distance was 6 inches, not sure if that's macro enough for you. And even though it is F2.8 the AF is slow. Forget about using AF for video. Picture quality and bokeh is very good. OIS is OK, but this is an older lens and it's not as good as newer lenses. I will say that the image is less clinical like the 35-100, 12-35 or 14-140. I would avoid those lenses if you want a softer look. Stick with the Panasonic Leica 25mm F1.4, or the 45mm Macro, or Olympus 12mm or 75mm, all awesome lenses with AF. I use a really old Canon EF 100mm Macro F2.8, probably the first EF to come out in the 80s or 90s, and it produces a very very nice image. Plus I can focus within a few inches, just spectacular lens. I would keep your Canon lenses, you can always use them with the right adapter (although no aperture control). I guess it depends on your shooting. If you can, try out lenses or rent them. Each has its own character. But that's why I love micro 4/3rds - you can use almost any lens you want.
3. I think the video is great and the different perspectives distinguish reality vs dream. However, the black and white is maybe just too dark? I'm sorry, I like them but the noise looks like footage from a night-vision camera. I wonder if with the BMCC you could do a day-for-night look with grading, then you won't get the ugly noise? Don't get me wrong, the footage is good but the noise. I wish you could shoot it again with the BMCC, but maybe that's for the next project. Great video!!
4. Actually detail looks fantastic. I agree with the grading. I wish there was more aggressive grading. Actually, I hope they will release some test footage for us to do our own grading. Wonder how this compares to Alexa RAW, even against the BMCC. Can't wait to see more!
5. On a side note, I wish I could afford that OLED screen, it looks awesome. But unfortunately it costs the same as a GH3 and I already ordered that...
6. I have the 6" monitor and I did a custom horizontal width on the 2.35:1 setting. And I crop my footage (don't want super 3.55:1) to fit, so I stretch the horizontal width. This is for the 2x anamorphics, for the LA7200 the default setting works fine and displays fine. I save it to one of the presets and just use that. Works like a charm, although you do have to set the "center" when cropping.
7. FilmMan, thank you for finding all these videos. I too hope that the Leica will be good. I think the picture is good for video, just wish they had a steady demo, not the jerky run-n-gun one the guy shot. I think for locked tripod shots it could be very good. Nice full-frame image with contrast. Be nice to shoot with all that Leica glass!
8. I swear Canon should stop giving "cinema" cameras to photographers to shoot video. Seriously, that video is indeed a monkey on caffeine! And WTH with those shutter speeds? I think we're done with the super short DOF, but in those shots? And no stabilization? Damn shaky shots making me sick. No wonder Canon is going down. How about getting real cinematographers behind the camera instead of photogs?? Forget LaForet, the guy is a one off. No photog can compare to real cinematographer.
9. You do understand that not all monitors refresh at 50 or 60hz. Some monitors refresh at 55hz and 65hz or even 80 hz. I get the same results as you do. I think the resolution on the GH2 is so great that it shows up. I can shoot the same screen with a 5dmkIII and GH2, the GH2 shows the "banding" while the 5dmkIII doesn't. I recommend trying to find another monitor to shoot, one that does do a true 50hz. I hope this helps.
10. I understand and I agree with you. I wish I had more time, but I was really limited. I want the camera too, and my B&H preorder said delivery will be around Dec 5. I hope it comes in, I can't wait to have it in my hands!
11. I got a chance to use the GH3 too. I did a very limited test, and I didn't see any moire, see the guy's sweater at the end. I'm confused like larrys, in what situations does the moire show up? I guess I won't really know until I have a GH3 in my hands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTXo1HLOX6o
12. Karim you have some good points. The LCD and EVF are really nice though. Once you try it you'll never go back to the GH2. As far as hacks, well mine have crashed many times, and it's a problem when I switch between 32GB and 64GB cards. The GH3 so far looks very solid. 60P is nice too, and I wish it had 120P also but you never know they might add it later. Overall you might say it's a "polished GH2", but of course I think it's more reliable and production ready. When you handle it, well it feels beefy and solid, not plasticy and light. I always cringe on shoots because the GH2 doesn't feel solid like my 5dmkIII. I think once you handle the GH3 and use it, you will appreciate all that went into it's design.
13. Are you serious? Really? How is it "unreliable"? There is nothing "unreliable" about the sensor. The GH3 performs very well. You can nitpick all you want, but if you see real footage you won't even notice the moire. I had a chance to record footage at the Photoplus Expo, and it was fantastic! If anything, I think the AF is too sensitive. But for moire, I didn't even see any. And that's the main thing, for almost all footage you won't see the moire. This is incredible to hear, especially after the bumbling of moire from Nikon and Sony. Hacks are unreliable, and I've had many a crash with my GH2. Panasonic's All-I is very good so far. I can't wait to get my GH3.
14. GH2 also gets moire if using Panasonic's lenses. Namely the older M4/3 like 45-200mm or 100-300mm. I think the pancakes are OK, 14-140mm is a newer lens and you definitely won't get this with the 25mm Leica. But I agree with sanveer and jgharding - WTF with these amatuer clips? The lighting is just piss poor and what's with the picture profile? Gotta know how to get the best out of a camera. You can still shoot shit on a hacked GH2 if you use the wrong picture profile with crap lighting...
15. The ones I really want are the Master Anamorphics. But at $50K-$100K each, I think that's out. Wish I could rent it one day just to see how awesome they are!
16. Karim: I know what you mean. But it's typical of companies. Look at Canon and Nikon - took months for stores to have adequate stock of the 5dmkIII and D800. Even the 1DX only recently got into people's hands, and it was announced last year! Then again shows like Photokina and NAB are there to show future products, but we never know when the products would actually hit shelves.
17.
it does look nice. I still need to know how wide that "wide dynamic range sensor" really is. And most importantly if the new all-i 72mbps gets rid of the flashing macro blocking of the gh2 that I just don't want to see anymore. The thing is, the bmcc now getting a m4/3 mount, and not being much more expensive than the gh3 with a lot more to offer, the gh3 is not as appealing as before. But I cannot stand companies like bmcc that don't hold up to their promises and sell you something they don't deliver. I'll wait to find out more about the gh3 and I will follow black magic and how bad the delivery delays really are and I will make up my mind.
You understand that when the GH2 first came out you couldn't get it anywhere for over 3 months. Announced in September 2010, it wasn't until March 2011 that there were significant quantities in the US. Only people in Japan and asia were able to get them in 2010. So you can harp on Black Magic all you want, but Panasonic had significant problems supplying anything M43. This includes their awesome pancake lenses, Leica 25mm, batteries... the list goes on. I hope that Panasonic gets their ass in gear and produces mass quantities of the GH3, otherwise it could be well into 2013 until we even see any in the US.
18. Thank you for letting us know. I thought it was only ISO320, but you're right about the other ranges. I'm looking forward to the GH3. Monday can't come quick enough!!
19. Turn off Highlight Tone Priority. Unlike the T4i the 5dmkIII applies this to both photos and video. Turn it off and your videos should be fine.
20. I sure hope they do this. I hate having to custom stretch the picture. I do it for the mkIII, and my anamorphics, and it still doesn't look right. A quick setting that actually works would be nice.

NEW GH2 Handle

Matt, Just like QuickHitRecord stated, this is late in the game. And besides I got the Japanese pistol grip that Andrew reviewed way back last year. That plus a nice monopod brace arm and I have a very good stabilized mini-run-n-gun setup. I never use the camera like how you position the grip. I think if I was taking photos, this would be amazing. But I shoot mostly video, so I need something more. And unfortunately, the GH3 is around the corner and it will have a battery grip as an accessory. That might be more than enough for some people. Don't get me wrong, I like your product. I do wish you well and I hope other people see the need for it.
22. Laforet is Canon's bitch, always has been. He won't touch Sony otherwise he'll lose his precious "status". Anyway, once he made it big he completely lost touch with what helped him in the first place - the DSLR! We have yet to come to that perfect convergence point, but I tell you what, Cinema EOS is for pros only and is priced that way. Don't think for a second that it will stop people from using DSLRs. Even the lowly T3i/T4i can produce a great image, not the best image, but it still does a great job. Price will always be a factor, not EVFs or rigs or whatever accessories you think you need. If the C100 was priced under $3K, then you have a point, but at $8K it's for pros (and money wasters) only.
23.
What is that square box on the right behind the cage?
Looks like a LOMO squarefront. EVF is in the box on the left. Nice stuff on that table!! :-)
24. @dreams2movies - I think you need to check in the Anamorphic Forum. Another guy had the same question as you. I think for static locked shots on a tripod, Anamorphic works. But I have yet to find a way to rack focus dependably without an Iscorama, and that's now big bucks. Depending on how you shoot, cropping works just fine. But there is that "look" that Anamorphics produce that is unique. Then again, having a vintage lens will also give you a distinct look. If you have limited money, buy a vintage lens. Anamorphic lenses require a prime lens to mate with, so you can always get an anamorphic later. You can check out how I managed to put GH2 w/ Anamorphic + Canon 5dmkIII footage together: http://youtu.be/JEasP2JZlyo
