Hands-on with the Canon 5D Mark III video mode
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Don't forget Sony. They will have a full frame camera out by Photokina 2012 and they have come on a hell of a lot with DSLR video lately. Sure I am disappointed the 5D Mark III resolution is as soft as 5D Mark II but at least moire, aliasing, codec, rolling shutter and low light ALL improved. And it no longer drops to 540p over HDMI. It is a refinement of a great camera. The price is too high though, I agree. -
EOSHD GH2 (and GF2) patches refreshed, now with 1080/25p support

It plays back fine for me on same cards. Not touched the audio bitrate? I'll look into it. -
Hands-on with the Canon 5D Mark III video mode
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Good point Matthew. I don't entirely believe the reason there isn't clean HDMI at 1080p is because of lack of grunt. Even the 7D does it. Canon protecting C300 again? "If you don't cannibalise yourself, someone else will". One word: D800. -

It is good enough for many many great shoots to come, but it is definitely a lot softer on fine details than the GH2 is capable of. It isn't any better than 5D Mark II in terms of actual resolution. And this is a £3000 camera body. It took 3.5 years to do this??

Hands-on with the Canon 5D Mark III video mode
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
For the price I was expecting it to at least scale 22MP cleanly to 2MP, as the GH2 can scale 18MP to 2MP almost perfectly with resolution almost nip and tuck with a still scaled down in Photoshop. The sensor in the GH2 is clearly optimised for video. The sensor in the 5D3 is clearly not so much. A half hearted effort to add 1MP to 21MP to get even binning. Not sure what else they've changed. This is an expensive camera. And there is nothing in-between this and the C300 from Canon. It is however - and this is important to remember - possibly the best full frame camera on the market for video. But the D800 is sure to give it some tough competition now. It isn't the walk over I thought it would be. -
http://www.vimeo.com/38055013 (Please download the original 5D 1080p file, it only streams in 720p. No artistic value. Not representative of final firmware. No salesman will call.) Looks like someone didn’t get the memo! In the last few hours the first 90Mbit 1080p Quicktime file was made available from a pre-production 5D Mark III. The subject matter is mundane but finally we get to see what the true resolution of this camera is like. The test is shot at ISO 3600. Here’s my verdict… Read full article

I was able to try out the 5D Mark III for myself today in the UK at the Focus On Imaging show. I also had a talk to one of Canon’s technicians about sensor downscaling, HDMI output and more. Is it truly the big improvement on the 5D Mark II for video everybody is hoping for? I also got my hands on a Nikon D800 and Fuji X Pro, more on those after the break… Read full article

It is a testament to how demanding the camera market place is of manufacturers at the moment that Canon could bring out a large sensor compact like the G1 X and for me to have quite a few major gripes about it. This is the best image quality we’ve ever seen from a camera in the ‘compact’ class. Although the Panasonic GX1 with 14-42mm PZ comes pretty close for around the same price. Video wise, image quality at 1080/24p is actually rather detailed and can be almost DSLR standard but it is not a match for the GH2 because of heavy aliasing, a slow fixed lens and a lack of manual control. Astonishing Canon 5D Mark III ISO 12,800 video
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You can't judge res from a clip shot at ISO 12,800! We just don't know much about what went into this clip in terms of post processing, camera settings and compression. Vimeo clip download file size is tiny, much smaller than a raw ALL-I 90Mbit file. Various review sites have a 5D Mark III already. Once one gets one with a clue about video, then maybe we can rest easy knowing our pre-orders won't need to be cancelled! It is looking good so far though.... -
Andy. Don't be such a negative man. ??? I don't understand how you can put such a negative spin on performance like that. It is genuinely ground breaking. It is soft because of heavy compression for the web and the in-camera noise reduction (probably) turned up high. Turn that off, and see what the 91Mbit ALL-I files look like before passing judgement on the fineness of noise grain and resolution. To have ISO 12,800 that clean is extraordinary quite frankly and I don't understand all the insane anti-DSLR negativity around. Frankly wish they would shut up!
http://www.vimeo.com/37879608 Here is a shot from Japan which was shot with both the 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III (with beta firmware) by a camera reviewer. The cleanness and lack of noise is something quite remarkable. Are we in for a incredible low light treat – a truly ground breaking camera?
You are English. Why are you using "Period" like an american? I've always found it an unnecessary and arrogant characteristic. Other than that. Great site. I can't see the Nikon solving the moire problem with the HDMI-out either. Its a sampling issue. As far as I'm concerned they have brought out a last generation camera. I think the fact that the 5d mk3 has a 5760 horizontal resolution which is an exact 3x multiple of 1920 will contribute to very clean and fast downscaling. I am extremely in interested to see what features trickle down into the 650d. But for a direct multiple they would have to have a 22.3 megapixel aps-c sensor or go down to 9.8304 megapixel which is probably to low for stills.
Very interesting point about the horizontal resolution. Seems video is the reason it is 22MP. Canon seem to be taking us seriously. Nikon would never spec a DSLR sensor with video in mind.
-
If! It is very unlikely in my opinion.
-
Very big difference in price! The GH2 has a marvellous codec with the hack and insane detail. Only splurge on the 5D Mark III if you really need the large full frame sensor, timecode, and *possibly* a very superior image especially in low light. I'd also wait for the proper sample videos and reviews before making a decision. GH2 is so cheap. Why not get both if you can afford the 5D Mark III? Not much more of a stretch over the top.

Canon G1X video samples - DIGIC 5 - I'm not impressed
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It is a bit of a shame. But it is probably the best compact ever made for low light and stills. Mine has just arrived, so expect review of video mode soon. -
For the vast majority of DSLR shooters these cameras are a lot of money so it is important to get the right one. Often it could be a small feature that sways it for your individual needs so it is never right to say that one camera is ‘better’ for ‘everyone’. It isn’t as cut and dry. However it is possible to be objective about image quality. I’d say the 5D Mark III definitely has the better internal codec and resolution. How about ISO 12,800 that looks like ISO 3200 on previous camera? It is next gen in terms of stills quality.

Canon 5D Mark III Official. The comprehensive EOSHD guide
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hey everybody, I really like this evolutionary approach, that brings all the really important changes to the 5D system. My only problem at the moment is: How to get one as fast as possible? Andrew: I know you live in Berlin, and, as I am german as well, thought you might have a tip for a german online store, that might be comparable to Adorama or B&H in the US. Amazon.de usually is very slow with pre-order options for new cameras. Thanks!
I didn't actually use any German online stores when there, since I couldn't read any of them! Choose the biggest German online photographic specialist, not consumer electronics Amazon, as they will get largest stock allocation. -
Canon announce the 5D Mark III – EOSHD takes a first lookI thought I would die before this camera was released. Continued strong sales of the 5D Mark II put paid to a revolution for the line, or an earlier release date. So the 5D Mark III is a very evolutionary camera. If it isn’t broke – don’t fix it. People do tend to forget what a power house the 5D Mark II was for video, and especially stills and many current owners are well satisfied.
