1.
I now have my Canon 5D Mark III and I’m working my first piece of cinematography that I’ve shot with the camera, called Spring Revolution. The shoot is work in-progress but I have some initial impressions of the camera which I’m happy to share right now… Read full article
2. That isn't the clarification you asked for, typical customer services  ??? So 99% sure it is 8 bit on D800, D4. And not really massively better than the internal AVCHD. The resolution is what kills it for me. Unlike the 5D Mark III it does not have the saving grace of clean detail and no moire either.
3. I was frankly amazed how much I was able to push it around before the image broke up. That codec is superb. Sensor also very much improved.
4.
Sam Morgan Moore (check out his take on this here) has sent me some high quality grabs direct from his ProRes footage today. Origin, the first 5D Mark III batch to land in London. The workflow was H.264 to ProRes 4:2:2 to TIFF then to high quality JPEG. I have to say image quality is really nice, a great base to work from and very gradable indeed. ISO performance even at 6400 is stunning with a very fine film-like grain. 5. Best way is to try the tripods out in the shop to get a feel for them. Some cheaper ones are surprisingly good but I'd try and invest at least another 50 euros if I were you. It will be a long lasting purchase if you get it right.
6. Use latest PTools and v1.1 firmware instead. You are using the out of date stuff!
7. Equivalent to the 28-105 L on the GH2 is 14-140mm. That has IS. And unlike the Canon lens it is silent IS and not picked up on the sound track. Problem solved! I suggest however using a faster prime (F2 or F1.4) with a handheld rig, rather than use IS for video. An IS zoom is usually pretty slow, expensive and floaty.
8. Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 is better than both in my opinion, although I have not tried the Velbon, generally they tend to be a bit low end.
9. What is the obsession with interlaced wrappers and HDMI, can someone please enlighten me? These camera companies want their heads banging together they really do! Just give us 1080p, it is 2012 and if your TV / box doesn't accept the signal, stuff it - get a new one. Or even better how about Nikon providing us 176Mbit ALL-I in camera like the *$500* GH2 does!! It's a no-buy for me with the D800 at the moment. However D4 has a tasty trick I will reveal soon, just waiting on Nikon's clearance of my source's footage.
10. I'm using the bundled Silkypix raw converter as Camera Raw and Photoshop doesn't support the X Pro 1 at the moment - since it is new, and they are slow. Yes agree on Astia, Sara, favourite film mode on X Pro 1 by a mile!! The standard one brings out the shadows better but Astia has better tonality.

Thanks for posting but... 2/3" sensor for $9,000. No thanks!  :-[ Too big a penalty to pay for just raw and no rolling shutter. I'm going to be very happy shooting with 5D Mark III with clean high ISOs. These Kodak CCD things are overrated!
12.
There is more to this camera than meets the eye. In my first look I was rather taken aback by the eccentricities of the camera and just could not work out what it offered over the cheaper NEX 7. Now in a surprised double-take, I am beginning to believe it is actually the best mirrorless on the market for stills. And the 1080p video mode – once you know the limitations – is capable of producing incredible results. 13. Nice shots in there. I've been a bit off using Canon DSLRs recently but when 5D Mark III is in my hands I will be using them as much as GH2, and will look into using the Flaat picture profile. Looks great.
14. I expect it it is progressive 30/25/24p in an interlaced wrapper, but waiting for 100% confirmation...
15.
Slowly the new DSLRs are giving up their mysteries as they land in the laps of lucky pre-orderers who thanks to Canon and Nikon have had to blindly throw $3000 in their general direction, hoping that the camera does what they want. So next time if you are listening Canon and Nikon, tell us right from the start about things like image quality, scaling to 1080p and HDMI output quality. Anyway, rant over! Here is the first professional test of the Nikon D800′s mythical uncompressed HDMI output. EOS-1D X

Looks about the same to me, nothing to suggest it is sharper. That is well shot stuff, some of the horizons look very sharper than I'd expect but look at the fish eye shot of the boat and it tells you it is not quite true 1080p.
17. I too would like to see an SSD in there. The SSD interface is SATA 3 and thus mass produced, very cheaply. Integrating it in place of the old CF interface should be pretty doable. SSD storage is super fast and sub $1 per GB.
18. Axel, very nice indeed! Is it available?
19.
I had the chance to interview Elle Schneider today of LA based Digital Bolex. Their D16 camera is a 16mm Bolex using existing off the shelf components and raw processing software developed in Canada. It shoots 12bit raw with no rolling shutter, although the sensor is much smaller and less sensitive than the one in the 5D Mark III. 20. How are they getting a raw feed onto a drive from that? As far as I know the Allied doesn't record internally. Maybe that is to test raw recording box connected to the back?
If you are interested in the NEX 7 cage get in touch with Philip and Wondo at ReWo’s website here The NEX 7 just became more attractive on a professional film set. Here is the ReWo cage for the Sony NEX 7. The shots below are of the most recent prototype. You may remember ReWo from the professional GH2 cage (see the EOSHD review). I want to have top and side handles, rails to support large LOMO anamorphic lenses, attach a monitor and a mic. This cage is the answer. 23.
Now I love this kind of enterprising spirit. A passion for filmmaking, a passion for technology and a “let’s build a rocket” mentality. The Digital Bolex project which seeks to build a digital cinema camera for indie filmmakers has now succeeded in passing their $100,000 target in just 24hrs – helped by taking pre-orders for the camera at $2500 each. In fact it is set to break $200,000 in just 48hrs. A runaway success… Will the customers get what they paid for? There are many ways to look at the Digital Bolex. Here are my 10 perspectives… Read full article
24. A57 is almost identical to the A65, which is almost identical to A77. Good thing is the price, but apart from that it is old news!
25. Just untick all the boxes in PTools OR download the original firmware file and update to that one from SD card.
