Well that is interesting… My ‘new’ S1Rii came with firmware v1.2 and Arri log C3 installed so some mug just bought and sold this camera pronto to MPB and I snaffled it for £2700. Unless I am the mug and they sold it to MPB because of some fault…but then surely they would have sent it back for a full refund to wherever they bought it on the first place? Someone probably lost over £750 in depreciation + Arri license… Not that I can use it because my other 3 Lumix cameras will never get option. Instead, looking forward to giving @Andrew Reid option a whirl, but it’s finding the time, - heavily bogged down with work at the moment…

I'd say that if I had $5,100 burning a hole in my pocket for a compact camera (and I don't), I'd be a lot more likely to buy a GFX 100 RF for $300 less than that and then take myself and a friend to a nice restaurant and share a meal and some wine with the rest. (The 100RF really needs to start aging and showing up in big numbers on the used market already, would love to buy one at a big discount from one of the buttholes who bought one for retail and is now trying to sell for $7k)

It's arrived. First impressions = impressed. Feels like a very slightly chunkier S5ii and as it is taking over from a Sony A7RV (and a Nikon Zf), that is no bad thing. When it was first announced, I was disappointed on two counts... Count 01 = the body, - it was and is not a mini S1H. No top dial for one thing. Boo! Count 02 = it didn't have and still doesn't have the 61mp sensor from the A7RV/Leica SL3. Boo. Initially boo anyway. Count 03 = I am The Count and I like to count ha ha ha. (Bonus Count) But over time, these two 'issues' have become non-issues for me. The body first. Yes, I would rather it had the top LCD and was it's own design, but they have addressed my criticisms of the OG S5 and S5ii which were less than great rear LCD and horrible clacky shutter. It does have a sort of mini S1H feel, despite the lack of a top LCD. Summary, in reality, in the hand, I genuinely like it and everything works exactly or at least very similar to, how I am used to with the S5ii's, but just better. And the 44mp sensor over the 61mp? Came to the conclusion that 61mp was overkill anyway and was always shooting in 26mp mode so with the new Panny, I will actually be shooting in a higher resolution. Most importantly of all though, this has been an exercise in both downsizing my overall kit; this year from 5 bodies and 9 lenses to 4 bodies and 7 lenses, and then in 2026 (or poss later this Summer) from 7 down to 6 lenses. And all 4 cameras with the same batteries, menus and very close manual controls. Setting it up now for stills duty across 5 days from the end of this week and then it will also be on hybrid duty from mid Aug. Looking forward to pulling some 7.2...1k frame grabs.

Ronin 4D Price Drops and ProRes RAW license is now $1

I'm not misunderstanding what you say. You're saying it wrong and I am correcting you. Recording externally refers to using a separate unit such as a Ninja V, Video Assist, or XDCA-FS7. Those are systems that have their own processors to implement the codec. DJI implement all of the codecs within the camera. Their ProSSD adapter does not have ProRes RAW and ProRes 4444XQ built into it. It is just a device to convert CF Express to USB-C. As far as I now, it has no processor at all. To look at mine, you'd never know it wasn't part of the camera when I received it - it looks like an "external unit" than a USB-C SSD taped to the side of the camera would look. As to the rest, what I said was "You have to pay $1 for a license to turn it on and you need to record it to ProSSD." and you responded "besides those two big caveats." The way things work in English, if I make a statement that has two parts and then someone responds respond as you did, the default assumption is that the "two" refers to the two parts of my statement, not two parts of half of my statement that existed only in your brain. Other people can't read your mind. And no, you can't go into most local electronics stores and buy a ProSSD. You also can't go into local electronics stores and buy high-performance CF Express Type B cards (or in many cases, any CF Express B cards at all) - you'd likely have to go to a professional video store for either one - or just order from B&H, CVP, Amazon, or whatever online retailers deliver to your area. And yes, they are too expensive. I've said as much repeatedly (and with some foul language when I bought 3 of them - because as I've also said, the camera insists on using the HQ variants of things and burns through disk space almost as fast as it runs through batteries, and that's really fast). And as I also said before, many users probably just use normal ProRes and never miss having raw. While raw tends to be fairly common in the narrative space, it's almost nonexistent in much of the commercial and wedding industries, both of which, I'm told, have been pretty big adopters of the camera. -
Sony finally notices that people like small cameras, releases RX1R III

...and then mere nano-seconds later, thought, nah. I am in the process of trading my Sony A7RV and Nikon Zf for a Lumix S1Rii. Why? Brings it all in house as my 3 video units are Lumix so it makes sense to have my stills camera also Lumix for cross compatibility. I will miss both however... The A7RV has been my workhorse 'pro' camera for 1.5 years now and it just delivers and never disappoints, at least when it comes to build, handling and most importantly results. HOWEVER, it has only one 'fault' and that is as much as I like and respect it, there is something missing, - that 'if a camera had a soul' thing. The Nikon Zf on the other hand is hands down the best shooting experience stills camera I have ever owned...and I have had dozens. BUT, only with small AF primes. It is probably fantastic with MF primes, but I have never tried and I didn't care much for it with the 3 adapted Tamron E Mount primes I have tried with it. Nope, works best with the Smallrig grip and the plastic fantastic 40mm f2 SE lens. If it's so fantastic, why sell it? Well at one point, I was hoping that Sony would indeed pop out an RX1Riii, ie, my A7RV in a 'rangefinderesque' style body, but probably at a stupid price. And guess what, they have done exactly that! Would I trade my Zf for that? Not a chance. Would I trade the A7RV for one? Are you having a laugh? But trade both for an S1Rii that kind of straddles the gap between the two...if you squint a little. Yes. -

are you purposefully misunderstanding what i say? i meant the external recording to proprietary media, for one, i don't think you can go to any local electronics store and buy the DJI SSD straight off the shelf. and considering the fact that the DJI SSD doesn't come with the product, for two. not at least on the 6k. it's standard on the 8k version though. if you want it after the fact, you have to shell out 169€ for the SSD mount and 749€ for the 1TB PROSSD. -
Sony finally notices that people like small cameras, releases RX1R III
Phil A replied to eatstoomuchjam's topic in Cameras
For a moment I had buyer's remorse that I finally picked up a Fujifilm X-M5 as my new EDC recently because I'd have loved this camera instead... but then I saw the price. They position it as direct competition to the Leica Q series. I'd rather get an A7C II at that point and buy a whole bunch of lenses with the left over money. Now the screen has higher resolution (than FX2) but won't even tilt? The feature sets on the newly releasing cameras are so disjointed. -

Ronin 4D Price Drops and ProRes RAW license is now $1
eatstoomuchjam replied to eatstoomuchjam's topic in Cameras
$1 for a license is a big caveat? It's still capable of it actually internally, just only to their special media. Why? Probably because they like money, but they'd probably say that CF express cards were overheating and dropping frames in their testing, just like why BMD made their own special media for the UC 12K. -
While looking to see what was on the Deal Zone today, I noticed this banner on B&H. RX1R III announced. 61 megapixel sensor 35mm f/2 lens (probably the same excellent one that was in the previous RX1R series cameras) 10-bit 4kp30 video, or 8-bit 120fps in full hd ISO 100-32000 Support for user LUTs Multi-function shoe NP-FW50 battery (big improvement over older ones) Body design seems to be an evolution over the old one, looks nice Has an EVF, but the LCD is fixed USB-C charging, shitty micro HDMI port Price is a mere $5,100. Most people have about that much in spare change between the couch cushions these days so it should be a big seller. Will it overheat? Only time will tell. The video specs are ho-hum enough that it might not. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/news/sony-revives-its-pocket-powerhouse-with-rx1r-iii-digital-camera

OM-1 + ProRes RAW + Ninja V = Heavily Overexposed?
The Dancing Babamef replied to BlueBomberTurbo's topic in Cameras
i expose using the native waveform in the Ninja V to see when the original RAW signal gets clipped. the camera display has the "rec709" look in it and the monitor tells me when the ACTUAL signal is clipping. -

what's the goal in the conversion though? Pr Pro and Resolve handles them just fine. -
I have a sirui in 24mm mft. I quite like it. when i first looked at it on youtube they were preproduction models i believe. I thought the flares might be a bit to much, however after buying it, i find the flares not to be too overpowering. I suspect either sirui toned them down or perhaps or youtubers sought out the absolute brightest lights to test on, which may not have been in the lenses best interests. Be interesting to see how your anamorphic adapter behaves. It was prime day everywhere wasn't it ? may not have been just us aussies... btw i like your room light. I have been setting up a black velvet curtain and i have some fairy lights to do some bokeh experiments with. If i can find something similar it might make it in as a foreground object.

Yup. Curren Sheldon bought one to pair with his R4D 8K for the documentary he's working on right now and (in general) he seems really happy with it. And even if your octopus has 7 of 8 limbs removed, it's better in a lot of ways than the other one. The S1R II does all sorts of things that the R4D doesn't - from open gate mode to recording raw to inexpensive (compared to ProSSD!) CF Express cards to much better control of codecs (R4D insists on ProRes RAW HQ (c'mon) and I think insists on ProRes 422 HQ if you choose ProRes. Oh, and to use lenses that weigh more than about 700g. -

99% of the people on YouTube cannot be called 'creators' unless the word is applied after the word 'content' and that followed with, 'for the sake of' and more often than not, proceeded by the word 'banal'. An endless stream of copycats with very little originality. It does exist (originality) but there isn't very much.
-
Yes, I noticed it too, but as it was just a quick test I didn't bother. It's just from the jpg compression so I'm not having to upload 8.5MB per image (yes, really!). I'll watch for it on the next batch 🙂 I got an email from Sirui Australia that shipping on my anamorphic adapter is delayed due to the Amazon Prime Day sales, so I'm guessing that lots of Aussies must have sent some money their way.

know this, your not alone... it was a fad and a bad fad at that. Sad it is, that creators haven't learnt anything as it still continues... if we judge humanity by our youtube creators you'd have to say humanity is doomed. When i want to see a genuine shocked face, i go watch some thing from styropyro he is always good value.

I see lots of banding in your images kye, i hope its mot just me lol. i presume that's from the jpg setting. I used to get banding from jpegs when i used them in timelapses till i learned better. Can you maybe up the jpeg quality a notch ? I know their only test shots, however i kinda feel the banding is hindering the visual aspect abit.

this. maybe it's something everyone needs to experience firsthand. i thought that i would buy these vintage or modern cinema lenses with character and take these epic shots with them but just focusing on keeping the camera steady and trying to use focus wheel feels makes me switch to my first party AF lenses. i was recently going through some stuff that i shot and with a simple grade the footage was really filmic lol.

The Dancing Babamef replied to eatstoomuchjam's topic in Cameras
that's true. maybe i'm just a balls-to-the-wall type of guy. if i see me not needing to edit the footage extensively i switch out from NRAW to H265. but it's still kind of a bummer that they had the ProRes RAW internally but patched it out. especially how cheap fast CFxB cards have become, for one DJI SSD's price you could get 2 or even a 4TB model of CFX. and it would be that big of a hassle.
