Micro Four Thirds is increasingly going up-market and into pro territory, and unfortunately new Panasonic and Olympus cameras are getting more and more expensive by the day. Thankfully the G85 is a pro camera without a pro price – it represents a genuine advance over the Panasonic GH4 with cleaner low light performance, better automatic white balance and of course 5 axis in-body stabilisation.

I got to play with the new Olympus E-M1 II today, a pro Micro Four Thirds camera they hope will sell for $2000. It certainly pulls out all the stops to imitate a miniature 1D X Mark II. This camera does NOT crop the sensor in 4K mode like the GH4. Instead, it over-samples from 5K down to 4K, using the full width of the sensor even with sensor-shift 5 axis stabilisation enabled.…

The first reliable rumours are coming in about the GH5. According to 43Rumors it will not be ready for Photokina, instead we might be looking at an early 2017 release date. They also appear to be confident about two other aspects – no extra crop of the sensor when shooting 4K and the codec has been bumped up to 10bit 4:2:2 internally!

According to Japanese news outlet Nikkan the Panasonic GH5 will get a resolution bump to approximately 20MP, with 18MP stills pulled from the 6K video mode in 16:9 aspect ratio. 4K at higher frame rates such as 60p, likely with a crop of the sensor is rumoured to be possible.
Without doubt my favourite camera series of the last 5 years has been the Panasonic GH range. But with the Sony A6300 on the horizon sporting a Super 35mm sensor with full 6K readout, is the future looking a bit shaky for Panasonic’s video wunderkind?
