I haven't done it recently, but I have converted GH6 RW2 to DNG successfully. I used the latest version of Adobe's DNG converter (because it wouldn't work if you didn't have the latest version). I don't use Davinci anymore, but I thought you could do it. I suppose you're trying to use the photos from the 75fps mode on the GH6? @Andrew Reid did something similar with the E-M1 ii a few years back. I've also tried it, but I think I resorted to exporting the files to jpg from lightroom and then using ffmeg to put them together. Theoretically, Davinci should be able to handle DNGs. Not completely sure what's going on here. However, in my limited time with the GH6, I've discovered that this camera has uncanny slow-mo abilities, yet mediocre photo capabilities (except the 100MP mode and 75fps). You really cannot shoot it like any other M43 camera I've used (protect the highlights and raise the shadows in post). You really need to nail exposure and increase ISO whenever necessary as you need that info in the shadows. The GH6 shines around 800-4000 ISO. Under 800 hasn't been better than almost any of my M43 cameras. In fact, I think you could just shoot video all the time and extract stills from it and I bet the results would be almost as good.

Good to know. I'll try to delete it and redownload it. No I was just using regular photo mode. Davinci can for sure handle DNGs, I wish they would update to handle RW2 files though ..

Have you tried updating the converter?

Yessir it said I was using the latest version. Going to uninstall and try again. What do you use?

If I were you, I'd try converting them to a older version of DNG to assure compatibility... I've never really seen any real difference in the output. With your GH5, you were probably using Lightroom 4, so make it compatible with that and I bet it'll work.

I tried several old versions to no avail. What do you use? This method?

  3. What is everyone's workflow with RAW RW2 pictures? With my GH5 I could send them through the Adobe converter and change them to DNGs so Davinci Resolve could read them, but now for some reason, the RW2 files out of the GH6 don't work in my Adobe DNG converter? I don't see what changed? It should still be a RW2 file so I don't understand why it's not working anymore. Haven't been able to find a work around yet. Thoughts?

  4. Firmware update 2.2 coming 9/27 that holds the record to SSD upgrade :D really looking forward to that. I do hope that they'll eventually make me choose between recording to an SSD or getting the Blackmagic monitor and utilizing BRAW like the GH5s...

Thanks! It's a lut I made that emulates Portra 400 film as scanned on a minilab scanner (which I've posted about here before). Since negative film has quite a lot of stops above middle grey and only a few under, the highlights are relatively low contrast compared to the shadows.

Wouldn't mind sharing that would you? I would happily pay for it. I'd like to mess around with it. It's very nice!

Lol! In all fairness and after looking closely at the above, the GH6 does seem to have slightly finer detail and a slightly softer and more natural look when viewing at 100% in 4K. But it's subtle!

I guess with GH5 V-Log a lot of people might have left the NR and sharpness settings at their default settings instead of turning them down to the minimum and this may have contributed to the idea that the GH5 is overprocessed.

@deezid might chime in with his experiences as I think he now has a GH6

I was going to say exactly this. It's subtle, but the GH6 looks softer. Great grade btw. Similar to the GHAlex workflow with the nice highlight rolloff.

FWIW his sample footage of the GH6 vs Alexa were indistinguishable to me. Like you, he's still doing some tests but so far he told me this is his favorite camera ever by far.

I was buying Nisi True Color VND filter 67mm. But in Europe this size is nowhere to be found because the retailers have finished them and it is in reordering. But 62mm is easily found. So I wrote to Nisi and they replied saying that it is not necessary to buy a larger size but the 62mm is ok. My question is: is there anyone who uses that VND filter with the same target size of the lens? Do you see slight vignetting or not? Thank you

No, it should be fine to buy the same size VND. Typical practice is to buy a filter that fits your biggest lens, that way you can use step up rings on your smaller lens

Panasonic have confirmed that the GH6 will get Prores RAW in a firmware update, so you can capture RAW if you like when that arrives.

Every time there's a MFT camera realised the people come out of the woodwork to try and tell us that AF and Toneh are somehow now mandatory for all film-making.  Once upon a time everyone laughed at digital photography saying that it would never replace film.

What's that saying?  The people saying something isn't possible should get out of the way of those who are doing it. 🙂

I still wonder (and wouldn't be surprised) if we get BRAW to the Black magic recorder as the GH5s has it. I really hope so. Since I use a PC and Davinci this would be amazing

  9. To me, alot of these "grievances" are just talking points of preference. Yes, MFT doesn't have the same "bokeh" as full frame. But I've never needed or wanted more background blur with my line of Oly 1.2s....there's no autofocus. Ok well maybe this isn't for all the Youtubers. Yes it's annoying they didn't address that issue, but I rarely wish I had AF when I'm manually focus pulling. Roger Deakins doesn't use AF so I'm good. Low light for the GH6 is excellent, especially with fast glass. The GH5s is amazing with the 1.2s, so the GH6 will be even better, I can't wait.

My one of few complaints is that they took away the dual SD card slots for backup recording. Why not have 2 CFast card slodlys with 2 SD card slots inside? Now I'd I want to back up record I have to pony up for the CFast. I've pretty much decided I'm going to wait for the SSD card update,as those are much more cost effective for storage.

Other hope/expectation is that either ProRes RAW and/or BRAW externally with come via update. That would be awesome.

There are so many positive upgrades for this, I'm super excited. I spot with Alex Mack who makes the GHAlex Lut...he's super pumped about this camera and had already preordered one. He's got his files prepped to have a GH6Alex update as soon as it's out. Looking forward to utilizing they with Prores and full Vlog.

Also, in the official Lumix launch video Matt was talking about in the USA they will be offering free CFExpress Cards with preorders. He was very specific about telling people that the cards will support all recording formats (so it isn't some cheap card) and all FUTURE recording formats that are coming and he was hinting that there was more to come. He also misspoke about being able to shoot ProRes RAW and then caught himself.

I honestly think this camera is going to get Internal ProRes RAW recording in firmware update down the line.

The fact that a future update is coming that let's you record to an SSD out of the usb-c port is HUGE for me. I was really hoping for that. I'm also wondering if BRAW will end up being available, since they have those updated for the GH5s and the S line (even those it's to the BM Recorder). I don't really care about Prores that much being on a PC

I thought these were interesting to see as well, pretty impressive

  11. Well? anyone catch the Lumix live stream this morning?

    - GH5 ii (meh, some updates to the GH5 basically)

    - GH6: didn't reveal much but dangled enough for me! Confirmed release for this year, 4k 120 4:2:2 internal 10bit as well as 5.7k 60p! Also with the announcement of the Pro Res Raw via Ninja V for the GH5s, can only assume something similar or even better will be offered on the GH6.

Personally I'm glad they didn't try to chase the "K's" too much and go for 8k. I think 5.7k will be a perfect resolution for low light performance as well as reframing if you want. I like what I hear so far! All new sensor and new neural engine.
