  1. FC has a free trial I wasn't aware of so I'll give that a whirl and see what happens.

Oh you definitely would not want to blow it up/print it any larger than the original output size. The original full size file at 5076px long edge is a little better, but really this could only be book/album or smaller printing. Maybe higher rez 8k would be a lot better?
  3. How/what do you use in Film Convert?
  4. OK, I have decided to try and make log work rather than the Natural profile I have been using to date for both the S1H and S5 footage. There's a ton of (often conflicting) info out there and I'm sure I'll get a few varied responses here, but it's worth the ask. For context, I shoot weddings and am looking to produce a filmic (as in slightly nostalgic film-like) cinematic end result and tend to prefer a more muted and pastel palette, but with an emphasis on subtle rather than "I slapped on this LUT I bought off ETSY" look. I've been using the gamut conversion LUT which quite a few rave about as possibly the best starting point, but then where? I'm also trying to avoid simply buying a whole lot of shit just to try it and some of it is quite pricey just for that purpose. I use Premiere if it makes a difference. I read good things about Film Convert, but maybe it's just hype, I don't know. Interested to hear and hands on experience from S1/5 log users. Cheers in advance.

S1H graded 4k 50p log screen grab, saved as a TIFF, exported to Lightroom and saved as a 50% size long edge size reduced Jpeg with a small amount of sharpening. Pretty sure I could shoot and edit an entire Wedding Film and simply pull off any number of stills in order to produce a complete set of stills with identical aesthetic. If I didn't want the dramatic crop, I could simply set the film size to say 3:2 before making those screen grabs. Click the image for a larger view. OK, it would not stand up to a side by side equivalent still shot on a 24mp camera, never mind my 47mp S1R...but as most never print and stuff is mainly viewed on nothing larger than a laptop...

Yes, more interested myself in say shooting 120fps at 240th second shutter speed as that more or less coincides the min 1/250th my stills camera is set at. Coupled with 6 or 8k, could be interesting as it’s already pretty decent from 4K. The boundaries and possibilities are certainly interesting and there is a certain appeal to focusing on just one form of capture and then producing 2 sets of results from it, with identical aesthetic. At the moment, I can’t quite get photography and video from the same shoot to have exactly the same look, so deliberately keep things different in a number of ways such as 3:2 pics vs 2.35:1 video, a different but complimentary grade to each being the main ones. I just need a full wedding day where I am booked to shoot only video and then I can pull out the stills for a full set of photography results…but of my 40 or so booked clients, about 5 are photo only and the rest hybrid. I suppose I could just pull from one of those jobs and will have to settle for that.

I started offering video on top of photography some 15+ years ago on the basis I never knew what type of muppet would show up 😉 To be fair, not all videographers were muppets, but few were compatible shall we say... So yes, totally in house ever since other than the 3 clients since who have breached contract, 2 of which were fine, thwe other, muppet. On the day, the couple hated him from quite early on and by the end of the day... (and don't ask about afterwards...). I've tested at 4k and 6k and 4k was better from the S1H. Motion blur is the biggest issue with 50 or 100fps shutter speeds... But I reckon I could get away with doing zero photography on the day and just producing screen grabs from 4k footage. I don't think a single person would ever know. I will test that theory soon, perhaps this year even, but the simple fact is I enjoy photography. I am as much photographer as I am filmmaker so why would I want to not actually take pics? Otherwise I just become a technician. Anyway, what was this thread about? Aesthetics. To keep it on topic, I'm going to be exploring the aesthetics of 4k screen grabs this year...

I've had guests turn up at weddings before with an enormous pro grade shoulder camera. I've had guests turn up with backpacks full of cameras, lenses and lighting... Some introduce themselves and ask if they can shoot alongside me all day. Err, no. Others just get on with it as if I'm not even there, indoors or out. I had one Leica toting dude directing bridal prep a couple of years back before I had a quiet word with the couple and said it's him or me, choose now. Nothing to do with ego if their camera is 'bigger or better' than mine, but when you have a professional image to uphold... It's no different to me walking into a chefs kitchen and saying, "Hiya, I've brought my own knives but I'm just going to use some of your ingredients the rest of the day if that's OK with you?" And that's the polite version, - imagine just wandering into the pro chef kitchen and just using their ingredients without a word as if you owned the place. There's bold and there's absolute fuckwittery... Fortunately, that kind of thing happens rarely, like 1 in 30 gigs maybe, but from time to time it happens. Once, it was the parents of the bride. Yep, blanked me from the start and acted as if they had been booked. Bride went along with it because they were paying but when I asked her why she booked me she looked at me funny and said, "because my parents are shit". At one wedding with 9 guests, 2 of them turned up and tried to shoot it like pros all day and when discussed with them, told me they could do as they wished. Imagine, one quarter of the people there were capturing the other 3/4. That was a fun day. I could write a book and one day, maybe I will 😉 People eh? Messing with my aestheticism 🤨

Because as the saying goes, you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Personally, I want: The highest quality starting point +/vs the least compromise (but there will be compromise) Photo and video. It's just a no-brainer for me. I'm playing with some stuff right now, photo and video, ahead of this year's season. Photography-wise, it's really just some fairly minimal tweaks but with video, I'm really trying to explore shifting from SOOC profile to shooting log. At least for anything 4000 iso or under, otherwise I'm sticking with my profile. The aesthetic, as Tim just mentioned, is whatever we want it to be.

    Panasonic GH6

Define. Rhetorical question. I am sure the GH6 would tick every box for me as a video tool for my needs as the GH5 already does and the same goes for my S5 and S1H, other than the above question. It will be interesting to see if ‘improved AF tracking’ = a switch to PDAF, or whether it’s just another tweak to the DFD system. I really don’t care what it is or how it works, just that it does. Having said that, I’m more interested to see what they do with the GH6 AF because that might reveal where they will probably then be going with the next gen S1 line…
  12. Tell that to the French 🤔 To be fair, I haven't made as much effort with the language as I might, but I have many excuses... 🤥
  13. The only flash I use is Godox AD200 off camera. I don't use on camera myself and haven't in at least 7 if not 8 years, but OCF, at dusk or after dark yes. Mostly outdoors, but not always, lighting up folks speaking during wedding speeches etc. Direct if outdoors or bounced if indoors. Great bit of kit and all I need. I went off flash a bit the more I did video, but I'm bringing it back quite a bit for '22.

Does anyone know what SD cards Villeneuve used to shoot Dune on?

Someone, somewhere, will be asking the question, "what SD cards did they shoot Dune on?"
  16. Which reminds me that I received an email the other day from a company offering to actually do negative stuff on-line and on social media in regard to competitors. Beyond words. I have done a small amount of 'industrial espionage' in the past regarding a couple of competitors re. pricing (as is done to me quite regularly, some of which I can spot, most of it not) but actually takes steps to actively attack someone? I'll see if I can dig it out...

I think so also... I don't think people outside of the industry have much say in regard to the aesthetic and nor do they/we have much say over the content other than voting with our feet and wallets in regard to the latter. Plus our all important keyboards of course. I just watched Dune this weekend and was blown away by the aesthetic. Best movie ever? Well that one is debatable and in regard to the aesthetic, is it all 100% real? Of course not, but that combination of real + manipulated, the lighting both at the time of capture and fiddled with in post, the tonality of each scene etc... Shot on digital, transferred to film and then scanned back to digital in order (in their words) to combine the best of both for some kind of crossover look. It appealed to my aesthetic anyway!
  18. Both my father and mother-in-law. To a T. I block my father on social. My wife blocks her mother. They are like out of control rabid kids. With tourettes. Actually what @kye has mentioned about workplace issues, I have experienced twice. Not actual bullying (good luck with that, - I don't wish to sound macho or anything, but just good luck with that with me...) but behind the scenes manipulation of other folks over a prolonged period of time. Both cases, photographers hiding behind on-line personas (in one of the cases, pretending to be a bride...which he wan't), over a period of time and with butter that would not melt in their mouth, slowly beavering away at under-mining the foundations. And for a while, they made progress but then their behaviour came to light. Or rather the incidences did and then after investigation, the culprits were brought to the surface. They were dealt with publicly. No fuss, no drama, no shit-talk, - the facts simply presented. Neither are still in business. Speaking generally, it is what it is though, - part the 'fault' of the existence of the internet and partly the steady erosion of society. Actually, I think the two go hand in hand and whilst neither is responsible for the other, they both add fuel to each others fires.
  19. Well that's pretty poor. I don't use Facebook (other than occasionally Marketplace or something specific by a friend or family that I have been alerted to) but had to de-friend my own father a couple of years ago as he was such an internet troll/keyboard warrior. I have zero time for this kind of shit.

Hello 🤗 That’s my tribe. I shoot specifically for SOOC results for a couple of reasons: A: If it looks right, it is right and even though I only shoot for paying clients, my first and only priority is myself in regard to the aesthetic. Arrogant? Far from it… In 10+ years no one has ever questioned my grade and those that choose to book me do so because they like what I produce. B: Time in post. The grading side of one of my typical 10 minute productions is about an hour or less. C. The simple fact that I have never been able to get a better looking end result using log. At least not consistently. Every year I think that maybe I should try log again and run back to back tests and every time I do, it’s the same result and the SOOC wins. SOOC of course is not any cameras default setting but the deliberate choice of: profile tweaks + lens choice + filter choice + as much as I am able to, lighting and direction of light. In regard to the latter, maybe I’m just shit at grading…🤪
  22. Indeed. For anyone that doesn’t need AF, purchasing ‘vintage’ lenses can be a near zero cost…or even make a profit over time approach. I need AF at least some of the time and being something of a minimalist, don’t wish to carry more lenses than I need so anything non-AF doesn’t work for me, but that’s just my use case scenario. Plenty if used AF lenses at decent prices, native or adapted. Just don’t try adapting to Panasonic and expect anything more than 1/10 AF 🤪
  23. What both of the above said. Otherwise, if what you currently have is not working for you and cannot work for you, bite the bullet, take the hit and offload it to someone like MBP if UK/EU or KEH if US. But nothing is ‘future proof’ when buying current tech. Leica or Hasselblad probably hold their value best for no other reason than their heritage, but as for the rest… The single best way to minimise the cost though is buy used. I try and buy as much as I can used these days… A colleague of mine bought a brand new Panny S1R a couple of years back at full retail price of around 3500 euros, plus 2 genuine batteries. Barely used it in those 2 years and sold the lot to me for 1500 euros. The S1R is still I believe one of very few cameras that has a score of 100 on DXO. Used ‘like new’ S1H for 2250 euros last year. Find me a combo like that for under 3750 euros! Now I am not saying that the S1R or S1H is the camera for you, but simply highlighting that there are many stupidly good options out there if you don’t buy used. But as above, what do you need it to do and any preferences over 4/3, APSC, FF etc?
  24. I use social media (IG) for business only otherwise the greater portion of it is toxic in my opinion. So much misinformation and soapbox ranting… I keep it to an absolute minimum as I do YouTube comments. The single biggest problem as I see it is the complete anonymity of the most toxic. It empowers them in their cancerous commentary.
