    Yes.

Interesting solution.  It's another example of where there's hardware and software that control the mouse and keyboard to operate Resolve.  You can see it when he adjusts the power-window - the mouse is skipping around.
It's based on ControllerMate, which is one of the pieces of software that the Beatstep Resolve Edition also uses.

If you were interested I'd suggest doing a price comparison between the two options as they seem broadly similar in price, although the functionality of the Beatstep looks to be significantly more expanded.

It was on the wish list, till i googled the prices of both pieces and added them up. At this point i'll most likely add a kensington track ball with the scroll wheel and one of those numerical keyboards with macros or a korg nano control. I kinda like how that can be used to automate the sound and mixing levels.  I have gotten by with a two button mouse till now, so any improvement will probably be quite a leap forward.

  2. i found another option called midigrade thats the softwars side of things.  You'd also need the midi fighter for the hardware side. It seems quite nifty to me,  its still not a budget option but probably cheaper than the bm option.

Of course, my colour grading setup is hugely more expensive, but that's because it has to drive Resolve, which is a proprietary hardware interface, and it controls things that aren't keyboard mappable either, so it's a different proposition.

I recently upgraded to a mouse with a scroll wheel.  The poor old mouse got arthritis or something similar and had to be put down.  Imagine my excitement to read about all these control surfaces / aids.  i do have a couple of questions although.

So @kyeIt seems to me you have two setups, one for colour grading and the other for general editing  ? thats the impression i get.

One other question i have for the group in general is, how easy are these to set up ? I checked amazon and they give you the opportunity to review stuff. Seems like 50% of people have trouble with the manufactures software to add the extra functionality to these beasties once you get past two buttons.

Also i'd like to dabble with fusion eventually, i presume that a trackball would work ok in the fusion page ? Since i have probably clicked on the fusion page twice accidently i have no idea what's involved.  So may as well ask the question.

Being a stingy bugger i kinda like the idea of starting out with a kensington trackball with the scroll wheel. The normal wired two buttons model would probably suit my modest intentions. However i'm open to suggestions

  4. Yer the lack of an articulating screen is a real bummer, my canon 60d from 10 years or more  ago has one....

Times are tough no doubt about that, i'd hate to be a business owner or company right now regardless of the type of work.

Smart phones are wonders of technology, in comparison i feel cameras / video cameras are lagging or dragging the chain perhaps. No one company wants to put a camera together  with all the bells and whistles. Not saying i want a calculator on my bmp4k but you know what i mean.

Magic lantern did amazing things for my canon, you'd expect canon and magic lantern to jump into bed with each other and sell zillions of cameras, yet its the opposite, touch our cameras and we'll sue your pants off. After the timer incident on canons later cameras, and the way they segment the camera market, well i don't have much love for canon anymore.

I do like my p4k, i cant imagine how they could make a cinema camera much easier to use ( apart from a flippy screen )  All i can suggest is you do your research, if camera b has a few extra points in your favour buy that. Your the one using it.

  5. All work and no play, makes for a very dull day. There's also the fact, its been raining  To remedy that i bought a cheap $13 led light and and lego kit and have been experimenting.

    mclaren.thumb.jpg.ab9af811c2e60e03c8c490892fc6d9ef.jpg

A couple of hours of construction later, i had me a fast car again, albeit a miniature one. Must be near 40 years since i played with lego and i'm gonna call it therapeutic and quite adsorbing.

Anyway they say to start small. Fairly confident you cant get much smaller than lego and its a convenient size. Learned i need either a brighter main light and or some additional fill lights. I'm thinking a small set like this could teach one a lot about lighting, without a lot of expense well thats my theory. Did i also mention its fun, there's also the possibility, i'm regressing.

I don't remember lego having so many fiddly bits. Another thing to note is once i'd finished there were spare parts. Really i hope they included some extras as there was 1 of each of the really small pieces extra.  I wasted some time re reading the manual and i'm confident its all assembled is per the instructions.

  6. HELLO....      HElloo....          hellooo...

Its pretty quiet down here. Who's still got one, ?  who has betrayed the trust, turned to the dark side and bought something else  ?

I have actually been using mine a bit lately. No feature films yet, but i'm optimistic 😉. I think i may have turned a corner. Life  outside with a variable nd is more convenient Not sure why its taken this long.  I'll be honest there is a cast, I'll lean towards calling it a browish colour. However i reserve the right to change my mind after more testing.

In the interests of generating some traffic and learning something new perhaps, whats your nd and is there a cast of which colour ?

  7. In the heat of the day i decided rather than do some meaningful work on some aspect of the property, i'd rather take some dng's  and some  footage with the p4k and the nd filters i have.

I may have to do it again as i didn't take any notes which kinda makes for an all over the place test. At least i learned i should structure my approach.

Heres one dng that i have graded and converted to jpg. This should be the okko variable nd and a black promist 1/8. it was one of the last images and i thought what the heck lets mix things up. If nothing else i should at least get a grop of grapes this year.

  8. I did see a dial indicator in a box lying around in the shed the other day. If my brother doesn't turn up for work tomorrow, i may do a test for verification.

In my experience, as the F to EF adapters are by necessity reasonably thin, then they are so tight that the challenge of getting them off again is far bigger than the challenge of keeping them on and secure !

At the moment i have the tokina nf mounted to the viltrox straight through adapter which in turn is mounted to the p4k. I can lift the tokina lens at the front and get the viltrox rocking up and down at the mft mounting point on the camera, if that makes sense. not very inspiring.

The viltrox's saving grace is that it has a foot. Which if i can be bothered, can be mounted to a plate to remove all that play. But its extra setup time and extra weight. Adding a cheap ef adapter only seems to exasperate the problem, with more play. It does my head in wondering if its having any effect on image quality or focusing perhaps, and lets face it i need all the help i can get.

I don't think the viltox is helping to be honest. Hence the desire to move to a different system, albeit more expensive option.

Neither of my olympus mft lenses have any sort of play what so ever when mounted to the p4k. So i cant blame the p4k.

  10. Thanks guys, the ef idea sounds good and i do already have  7-8  m42 lens as well. I'm kinda put off by the cheap adapters i already have. Of the 2 viltrox adapters i have one straight through and one speed boosted, one of them have nearly as much play as a kindergarden yard and the even cheaper adapters m42 to ef aren't any  better.

i'm probably obsessed with 0.64 thing but i figure i may as well go wide and claw back as much  as i can.

i figure by buying the g mount for my nikons at least then that should eliminate any play for those lenses. If i buy an ef mount then i have to find an adapter with tight tolerances and i feel trying to find such a beast off ebay  is up there with finding a unicorn.

The cheap ebay adapters leave a lot to be desired. That may not be everyone's experience, but it has been mine. I do have an account  with B&h photo, would buying a name brand adapter say m42 to ef be  a better option ?

  11. Ok so i lied about the watering.  Got some good news today and instead went for a drive up to the big smoke (Toowoomba).  I mean how can one go to a big city and not go into a camera store 🤔. Which invariably led to an impulse buy, an okko variable nd filter 2-400. fairly pricey,

A quick  generic google  search for  okko nd brings up about a 99 reviews in some language that could be russian  and the one nd filter review was for a freewell nd filter, not exactly inspiring. I may have early onset of buyers remorse  at this point.

    okko.thumb.jpg.30c4d0176fdd983441a022133949d675.jpg

A similar search with the nd 2 - 400 added brings up pages of K & F nd filters. Either K&F are really good filters or someone's handing them out like candy.

    kf.thumb.jpg.54c9e93a71b103d86f9a090309d37c2d.jpg

Never heard of okko before and it was pretty much the only one in 77mm diameter. Apparently its a kiwi brand thats made in china. they use either Japanese agc glass or German Schott glass. Sounds promising so far

Tomorrow i plan on doing a series of test shots. It may even lead to a warts and all utube review to address the obvious disparity between filter brands. It will either be tears of joy or i might be cracking the seal on that bottle of rum i haven't opened yet.

  12. Strongly tempted to buy this speedbooster or one like it, fairly soon.nikon.thumb.jpg.2bae6293f234f84737d9327acd5cb099.jpg

I have 1 tokina  and 2 nikons  in nf mount. This speed booster is nikon g mount. i do have a straight nf adapter to the p4k. However i'd like to claw back some of that crop factor and get a little bit more light, out of the setup.   My question is,  does nikon nf fit a nikon g mount ? doesn't bother me if there's no electronic contact. I'd rather not spent a truck load of money on something, then find out they don't fit together. Obviously i'm not a nikon kinda guy apart from the three lenses, hence the probably dumb question.

  13. Two 1/4 inch thumbscrews arrived two days ago. Yesterday morning was spent altering the gimbal pole. A couple of holes drilled and tapped and the gimbal frame has been reoriented 90 degrees. Hopefully this adds some awesomeness to the user experience. ver2.0-gimbal.thumb.jpg.2f2628a933a9986e4f9cb955abbe82e8.jpg

The gimbal is not quite centered over the pole, not sure if that will become an issue or not.  If it does become an issue, i have already figured out a way to address that but i'd rather not if it can be helped.

Now i'd better go do something about modifying the garden irrigation before half the plants die from lack of moisture.

  14. If the crocodiles make it this far inland, i'll be doing some home leather tanning 😎  Only have one pair of work boots.  Another pair of something fashionable  might just do wonders for my charisma 😉

i did a tree change 14 years ago then worked kinda hard paying it off. To be honest i don't miss the cities at all. Although the nearest camera store is 2 hours away. Got good neighbors, lots of picturesque countryside to film what more can a bloke want ?

Changing the conversation a little, here's something i don't see enough off. With a bit of effort, i hope to remedy that this year.  Experimenting with low light on the p4k. there was a bit of a breeze and some thistle swaying around. It was actually quite dark, overcast skies and right on dusk.  The iphone 13  and some photoshop auto levels has done an amazing  job of making it look like noon. How about that, lol.thistle-p4k.thumb.jpg.b75d3b518208c7906f3c3450d328444a.jpg

I have ordered a 77mm 3 stop nd filter for the tokina 28-70.

Some nice images does not make a cinematographer (or DP).

    Nice videography.....sure.

    true.

Still you have to admire someone, who's actually out there giving it a go, and consistently i might add.

We should Probably ask @Andrew Reid about  hosting another competition. You know, New year, new sever, new competition.  In the interests of incentivizing a few people and maybe getting a few of us off our asses, i'm prepared to offer up a bottle of australia's finest ( well i presume it's Australia's finest, as i don't drink the stuff. Which is why its currently sitting there unopened. ).

    rum.thumb.jpg.06635c98b9bc70a07ef2bc63dfb6a316.jpg

Its not a new camera i know, However if you were to win i'm sure it would make you feel all nice and warm and maybe fuzzy inside depending on how quick you drink it 😉

May as well base the project off this thread, i propose we do a series of locked of shots on a city at night, which can include a sunset or sunrise. How hard can it be ? 🤔

The last competition had an element of cost involved to keep things fairly even. As noted in another thread, a bunch of us have cameras that don't get much use. This time around lets showcase our cameras and portray your city in cinematography awesomeness.  Oh and make sure you have some fun as thats important too.

. My admiration for her goes way beyond the technical - she strikes me as a true artist. And I'll take a moment to say that if I was shooting a scene in a city nightscape I would for sure let some of those LEDs flicker, because it immediately provokes an emotional reaction that says 'city'.

I am not naturally good with superlatives. So on many levels, its great,  most would agree i think.

As far as i am aware the human eye does not notice flicker quite the same as cameras do. My eyes don't anyway, but i digress.  I think its a bit unfair to draw attention to something the eye doesn't see, but maybe thats just me.

Leds are a recent invention, to say a city look  is now defined by pulsing leds, seems odd to me.

While we are all being artsy, cinematic and technical, personally i am not sure that a scene benefits from the added realism of flicker. If viewers need an additional layer to tell them its a city, either someone has done their job incorrectly or God help the human race.

Lastly lets not forget a very small percentage of people will be adversely affected by that flicker that some camera has captured.  They could have walked down that street or scene and normally been none the wiser or worse off, but watching it now will suffer vertigo, nausea or go troppo perhaps.

Ok its a bit extreme that last statement, however it won't take much to have people switch off.

Overall nicely done but I could have lived without the pulsing lights.

you referring to the scene with house of gucci and the very next scene which is even more noticeable ? i was thinking it was just me. overall i quite liked it except for the flickering.

I liked the atmosphere kinda moody.  Do you people think thats diffusion or  foggy town perhaps ?

  18. I live right on the very edge of civilization, if you define civilization as having good mobile reception. Apart from that its peaceful, picturesque in a bushy kinda way and the nearest neighbor is 1.5 k away. I was self isolating a long time before it became a fad 😀

just checked youtube the update says the upload was at 88 % while yesterday it was saying it was processing, so i cancelled it. Have to go into town later for fuel for the mower, a bag of sand and a black sheet, no not for bodies, more of a background i swear. So i'll reupload it then.

are goannas native to the usa of they been pets that have escaped into the wild ?

I see also in florida a tiger mauled some idiot cleaner and got itself shot. Personally i think they may have shot the wrong animal, but i digress.

  19. Ok so i was out and about this morning when i came across a 5 foot goanna. I have seen him/ her a few times before in the last few weeks. I have a live and let live psychology. If it don't bother me then i don't bother it. The thing about goannas is they can have a very nasty bite. their mouths are kinda like a portable sewer system.

Anyway been wanting to get some footage of this guy for awhile. i did pull out the ever handy iphone and filmed some hand held stuff, then i thought it would be a good opportunity to use the new pole and gimbal system and put some space between us, as i felt we'd both be be more comfortable with some room. by the time i got back, only a few minutes later he'd decided disappear.

Using it did bring up some unforeseen issues, which i was addressing this afternoon in the work shed.

i did upload a 4k for to youtube which brings me to a question is it normal for 4k files to take 5 hours to process ? the file size is about 70 meg which seems a bit odd
