I mean of course everyone has a right to share our opinions here but it just seems like a waste of time to continually write about a camera you have no intention of getting. Fair enough pointing out flaws - those are useful things to post about. But it gets a bit weird when you keep harping on about them as if you have some kind of vendetta. Especially when you start resorting to hyperbole like "Fuji is not the second coming of Christ trust me", which no one even alluded to.
Now the truth is we have no idea why Fuji's interpretation of ISO is so different. I need to do more investigating but I believe the DR setting does have an effect on this.

I don't really think the ISO interpretation has to be a negative thing... On the contrary, it seems you get more latitude to play with and adjusting the F-LOG or Eterna image in post to bring out the shadows by 2/3rds of a stop is trivial, with hardly any loss of image quality.

Isn’t the main advantage with the two different modes to have different settings? I understand if using physical controls; a lot of operations are necessary, but is it the case that if using the silent touch controls the camera remembers aperture, shutter speed and iso set for video? So it doesn’t matter what the shutter and aperture dials are set to? It overrides them? That would be good.
Then there is separate focus settings and AWB settings. Not to mention picture controls. I can’t use them on my X-Pro 2 but even if I could I would have to change a lot of things before I would press that record button.
I rather like the idea of having two “cameras”, two completely separated modes. And it’s different from custom settings which I don’t like because I never remember what does what. To simply have a ? and a ? makes sense to me.

Lifting shadows and pulling down highlights is the digital version of burn/dodge, I'm not talking HDR. When shooting a sunset for example, I expose for the sun and bring up exposure in the rest of the image in order to have something visible, otherwise I'd have the sun and a mostly black frame. The sunset from Easter Island posted below is an example. I'm not a fan of blown clouds that are blobs of white with no detail. Another example is from Borobudur, it was a gray morning but the sun was up and not clipping the clouds left the stone structure very dark, raw allowed me to recover more detail in the stones. Jpegs just can't capture everything a 14-bit raw image can - which is closer to what my eyes see and what I want to convey in an image. A simple 2-shot bracket can accomplish the same thing, but I'm doing a lot of traveling - 55 countries and counting - so for me carrying a tripod isn't always practical. Plus I prefer to be small/light and just go run-and-gun with a small bag with me when exploring. I shot a lot of raw + jpeg when with my XT2's and even DR400 wasn't enough, processed raws look better to me. And the ones below are just quick edits on a 12" MacBook, I'll clean them up when I'm back home on my iMac. Everyone has different methods, whatever works for you is cool.
    Cheers

I don't know what's going on with you but over the last few months I've noticed you've gotten quick to become aggressive. No one here is out to get you. Just because some people don't find certain features useful doesn't it mean it's an attack on you. Just like how AF isn't a priority feature for you, lack of 10bit might not be a deal breaker for others. Repeating the same things over and over isn't going to change people's minds.

still trying to figure out, if @jonpais has a personal problem with Fujifilm or is just trolling.
Anyway, the thread got absolutely useless through input of people just repeating what they heard somewhere and not trying the camera. There is no gain for me visiting this thread, so if anyone has any questions about the camera (I own it for nearly 2 weeks now, so have a bit of experience) feel free to ask. But link me or pm me, because I don't think I will visit the thread anymore.

Im just talking about my needs and experiences. Ive never challenged anyone, thats just something the angry fellow makes up in his head. Must be the sun down there.
I see no difference between them worth mentioning. I see zero reason to play with shadows and highlights in camera since I have been able to replicate it in post.
That doesn't mean you didn't see a difference. We simply might have been under different circumstances, expose differently, or edit differently.
Or we just have different bars when it comes to what we view as a significant difference.
Its just like when I said Im glad they stuck with a flip screen, because I have much more use for that than a fully articulating. Some would just chalk it up under "a different preference". And a few angry fellows will go ape shit and try everything to ridicule it, convince me its "wrong" or just act up like a baby.

have you even watched the videos i linked? the 1 million subscribers actually gets mentioned/explained too.. i don't want to make a parallel with politics but number of voters/subscribers doesn't necessarily translate to the speaker saying the truth or that his word should be 'taken as gospel' either..

Out of likes, this is the best advice so far today. Hype and new releases are never gonna be the way to reliability.
If one really wants good video, a video camera might be even better
(haven't watched Tonys video but I did glance at all the hate the video got since the response videos about it got more viral than his review. I wonder if the A7iii is the new NX1 which will be brought up like a broken record in every single thread.)

I have had the camera for over a week now and even though I promised myself, not to post in this forum again, I will give my opinion about a few things, maybe they help someone.
These are mainly about handling, the image quality seems to be very good and I don't want to start the discussion about 8bit vs 10bit again.
The video options are set up nicely, the addition of DCI 4K is very welcome.
You can start the recording with the touchscreen, if you set it to Shot. I also like the silent controls, even if they are a little bit small. I just touch it once to start it and then use the joystick to navigate and set the different options. Not only is it much faster but it doesn't close the menu after setting up one item either.
the new linear manual focus option for focus by wire lenses is great. That Fuji implemented this before Panasonic or Sony does is interesting too. Talking about manual focus, you can punch in either with a key you set up (per default the back wheel) or by double tapping the screen. There are two magnifications, between which you switch by circling the back wheel. You can move the magnified field during recording either with the joystick or by pressing the corners of the touchscreen. Resolution of the magnification is very good.
The same two magnifications are available in the viewfinder, but you probably won't need it, because the resolution of the EVF is very high. There is an Auto-magnification too, which starts when you turn the focus ring, but you have to activate it in the menu.

I only did a few quick tests on autofocus. It worked fine 90% of the time. Nothing to write home about, but acceptable. There are some AF options which I haven't played with too much yet, handling tracking speed and focus speed.
slow motion has to be activated separately, either through the menu or a function button. I did program a swipe gesture on the touch screen to open the slow motion menu.

Overall you notice, that this camera wasn't designed for video as it's main selling point. But coming from Fujifilm cameras, this is a huge step up. There are a lot of new options and you get the Fujifilm colors, which compensate for some drawbacks, at least for me. Overall I am impressed by the camera, especially for people shooting stills too, this is a very nice option. The new shutter is extremely quiet, you can probably shoot at a set and have no one noticing the sound.

Plenty of people do paid work with 8-bit material. I've shot a number of events and done a few cheap/free broadcast commercials. All were 8-bit, and I go back to the 5d2 in like 2008 or so. All of the spec was either 720/60p or 1080/30p and a minimum bitrate of 50mbps. I've never shot 10-bit or more outside of tinkering with a C300 and a Red a few times. Scratch that -  I had a BMPCC for awhile, so I did shoot some raw/prores. But I never did any paid work with it because the workflow didn't jive with my run-and-gun shooting style.
People keep repeating things like Netflix of BBC standards, which in most cases apply to them - not everyone. I know people that have shot stuff for Discovery, Nat geo and so on with gear below their published standards. If you're doing stuff for broadcast, then it might be an issue, but if you're shooting weddings or TV spots, its not an issue.
I never understand why people criticize specs from their own bubble. If you want a 10-bit camera, this isn't for you. If you want to shoot for 3 straight hours, this isn't the camera for you. Move on. Why keep repeating the same numbnut argument and clogging up this thread?
Back to the XH1- I absolutely love Eterna. 24p looks beautiful. I'm much more excited about this camera than the A7III. It looks like a winner. I'm looking forward to mine arriving soon.

sorry but no, he didn't say 8-bit isn't the right tool for his intended use, he claimed "fact remains these aren’t the requirements for any serious and aspiring professional in this industry" which implies 8-bit cameras cannot be considered serious professional tools for videography. i find that statement indeed offensive/inflammatory/ignorant.
as for the point about soderbergh, it was just to illustrate that "standards" don't mean much even in cinema. and btw he isn't the first to do it. george lucas shot star wars AOTC on a 8-bit Sony in 2002 as pointed out here recently. movie grossed $650 million.
anyways, the fact remains if you need a 10-bit camera, it's either GH5 or 10-bit video camera. not much point debating it in any other current mirrorless/ dslr  thread imo.

The xh1 is the first time I’ve ever considered buying a Fuji, but because it’s only 8bit I won’t get it. Everything for video is pretty awesome, especially the Eterna film simulation, however that 8 bit codec is just not persuasive.

99 times out of 100 the purple grid disappears when you full screen the original image. Just like the BMPCC.
I have only seen it on size compressed windows or in screen grabs. Never after exporting and full screen, then it magically dissapears.
I wasn't even aware that Fuji officially ever acknowledged the issue. Which firmware update did they mention it?

Very nice colours in that Nepal video. I like how Eterna make the skies a tad cyan. Nice dynamic range and the night clips are beautiful too. Nice AF shift to that boy that suddenly enters in front of the main subject.
I disagree with Northrup that the XH1 should have had a fully articulating screen. I really dislike them and it would be a definitive deal killer – I don't want to look down at my screen off the camera's center axis. Annoys me to no end. The articulation also adds extra movements that have to be performed to view the screen. Should just be a flip up motion like on a 500CM or Rolleiflex. I understand that it is valuable for vloggers but there are better cameras for vlogging than a reinforced sturdy pro body like this. For the occasional self portrait or weird angle I've found the smartphone app to work perfectly well.

my point exactly, however, i am not sure the list was that constructive at all... as yet again he berates Fuji ergonomics even going as far as "to encourage photographers to think about whether an aperture ring is really more efficient than a thumbwheel" which indeed should be perceived as flaming since the aperture ring (and ISO/SS dials which he also likes to complain about) are inherent core elements of the Fuji X system. the list also suggests "Fuji might have made better use of the LCD screen real estate" as I believe the LCD icons are too small for his eyesight (?), yet he disregards H1 addressing that with the new top sub-monitor giving clear settings info (even when the camera is off!) and allowing the back LCD to be clutter-free. the rest of the list "reminds", "speculates" & "alerts"... anyways, I just find it all reeks of negative bias, and has all been stated over & over which is why i called him out on that..
must agree this thread is definitely a dead-end mess. SMH

it says „Filmed on FUJIFILM X-H1“
It feels, like most of those Fuji X Photographers got 2 copies of the camera. One to shoot and one to film it. Sith limited time and most of them being photographers and not film makers I am honestly impressed, that there are even some good looking videos coming out. Fuji should really think about limiting the quantity and go for more quality of promo videos,

Haha I don't know what your objective in this thread is really.. Are you trying to pull everyone to buying an NX1? Since the camera is several years old, I reckon many readers have already considered it and skipped past it (or tried it already).
The NX1 is actually 550g without battery (http://www.samsung.com/uk/cameras/nx1-16-50mm-premium-s-lens/). The battery is 80g http://www.samsung.com/au/camera-accessories/nx-battery-bp1900/ which brings the total to 630g, so still less than the Fuji but not 123g less

Of course it can also function as a video camera. It is a hybrid just as the designer is saying in that video. jonpais could have taken a screenshot of the interview two seconds later when the same guys says “especially for photo use”. He also says a few seconds later that this camera can function as a solution for very small video projects. It’s not a professional video camera. It is a professional grade stills camera however. I remember reading elsewhere about this too. Perhaps it was Billy in the camerastoretv interview saying apropos the lack of 10bit that let’s not forget that this is not primarily a video camera. I forgot. In the dpreview interview the same designer talks about how the XH1 is made with DSLR users in mind. The grip, robustness and improved autofocus makes this camera a more viable D500 or 7D alternative. The Fuji 200 f2 is coming later this year and that is a large heavy lens that this camera was made for. I can see it as a perfect mate to the 50-140 2.8 and the 16-55 f2.8.
We can start counting photo features vs video features in the design. It’s more optimised for photography. As are the lenses with the exception of the new MK zooms.
Hybrid cameras are in demand and it’s great to see Fujifilm putting some good video features including one simulation for video. I think it can be a very versatile camera but if my main objective was video then I think the GH5 is still better, for video. But I don’t think the XH1 was ever intended to really outdo the GH5 on video.
The XH1 is a professional mirrorless stills camera with excellent video features. Just as, say, the EM1ii.

Im gonna show this here as well (will be dropping it in a Canon thread also).
I did a poll where I listed 5 specs and asked people what was the most important to them.
    864 votes so far.
And the winning spec is something Fuji does very well imo. So there definitely is a lot of appeal to the crowd out there in the non forum world.
