  1. of course the whole mother shipping thing reaks BS.. another long winded post with all kinds of false planted details and all the pics added again for blurring/confusion.. typical scam tactic @Ed_David: i have no reason to doubt you have alexa/red/film experience, but then again you're probably not a 21 year old kid from egypt with a Rebel T3 posing as a Media Empire / PhD Radiologist giving bad advice and scamming people thanks to a well built reputation and high ranking account. Yeah some people here are a little naive or don't do their homework and take hefty investment advice from strangers on a tech forum, but do realise not everyone is perhaps in your position pal. some people (maybe even majority?) are from different parts of the world. not every country/region has access to those types of rental shops. anyways i agree with your message but let's not get it wrong, no one here deserves to get scammed or purposely misinformed by this punk. fault is certainly not on them. i vote perm ban.
  2. Except the problem goes much deeper then this petty scam.. see the bigger problem is this kid has been compulsively lying to everybody in just about every forum post for the past 3 years. He's given false advice to possibly hundreds if not thousands of people (if you include lurkers). That type of behaviour is pretty unforgivable, he may have led people to loose thousands in wrong gear investment choices. The kid is an extensive compulsive liar and for that alone he certainly shouldn't be given a free pass to further contributions. The worst part is he is very convincing with his arguments which are often well thought and informed (he probably spends all his free time watching and comparing camera gear footage, reviews, vlogs and knows a thing or two about film stock thanks to grading with film emulations etc) and he enhances his conviction with casual mention of his decade spanning career in high budget film/TV/production work, name dropping Alexas, film stock and all kinds of bogus info to add credibility... Let me just illustrate you this with one example, a single post by ES with his Saadawi Senior Media empire CEO / hospital ER physician/ Senior PhD Radiologist hat on, giving advice to a hesitant C100 buyer :
  3. lol gotta admit some of these conspiracies are entertaining.. y'all got vivid minds.. i admit his whole IG account seems fake.. random pics with hashtags and conveniently placed pics of the lenses he's used to bait scam.. we know he's stolen footage before.. then again that account goes 3 years deep.. so wtf.. could this really just be some poor egyptian low-life kid with daddy issues.. that invented himself a fantasy mentor and pedigree (notice how on here he would always bring up his 20 years in the motion industry etc) just out of some kind of inferiority complex.. and that one day he just decided to turn on the community and pull a hustle in order to upgrade from his shitty rebel T3 ?!
  4. wow.. i could tell this kid had mental issues but that is some next level borderline sociopath character traits.. talk about self analysis lol.. this whole case is definitely odd.. being an active member on a forum for years, then a quick meltdown with scamming, gloating, ridiculous cover up.. and admission of guilt.. definitely not your ordinary scammer.. did this kid really think he'd get away with this.. or is it one big self-destructive path? i mean we've all been young and done dumb things but this really takes the cake.. theft in the middle east is no petty crime either so i'm really stunned by such foolishness .. really this can only be explained by severe mental disorder which really is quite sad, especially since there seems to be an intelligent side to him considering some of his contributions. but i wouldn't take pity on him either. he lied to you guys for years.. scammed people, gloated about it.. and we don't even know yet the exact magnitude of it.. i still think he's just trolling for attention and this thread is like his biggest accomplishment..
  5. .. just caught up with the entire thread.. here are my thoughts having the whole thing fresh into perspective: "ES" is a troll. He's a narcissistic kid with borderline multiple personality syndrome. as someone else pointed this isn't too surprising or even uncommon in the film making realm (having multiple characters, drama, plot twists, improvisation). "ES" at some point even said something like "gotta admit this would make a good film script". well except not. i knew from post #1 the "grandson" did it (actually that was OP's assertion as well). "ES" probably got a huge kick at the people lynching him but also defending him.. hence the troll. FWIW i always knew from day one here this character was fishy. as other also noticed, his signature. the whole 19-year old noob & wise old grandpa under the same account screamed bi-polar syndrome. maybe this guy forgot to take his meds hence the meltdown. and i say this because the oddest thing is that from the little i've interacted with "ES" he does seem to really know his shit concerning a thing or two (usually evolving around Canon EOS cams). That being said the obsession with the 1DC and long winded monologues about filmic properties always appeared quite odd from a mental state. If i were to guess, this guy is neither 19 or 80.. probably somewhere in between. Oh and guys, do not believe a word he's said in this thread, including the heartfelt confession. it's all an act IMO. the guy is a compulsive liar. there is no grandpa and definitely no prego sister. what is real though is the scam, and I really hope the people affected will get compensated. I would definitely report this to police authorities. And one more thing, having been to Africa and having actually dealt with Western Union there, i can confirm it's quite shady. Basically operated by your corner store owner. In between corruption, prominence of fake IDs, lack of enforcement etc.. it's no wonder why these types of "419 scams" thrive in that region... i mean if this guy really used his real name to scam all those people then he really is the dumbest kid on earth lol..
  6. it's a pretty well known fact that the 4K on the FS5 is soft & that the 4K on NX1 is overtly sharp. ironically people have been complaining about both these "issues"!
  7. Being familiar with all the cameras discussed above I do agree with Ebrahim's assessment about them. That being said I still think which one you prefer or is right for you is totally subjective so not sure I agree with the conclusion. It is clear Ebrahim is passionate about filmic camera properties (not just from reading the above but the 1DX2 vs 1DC thread etc) and that's fine. But outside of these specialised forum niches, people might reach different conclusions. I'm sure to many (including Canon) the C100 mk2 has better video quality then mk1. And same goes for recent Sony cams. The filmic vs cinematic / 4k video debate kinda reminds me of other digital vs analog or X vs Z debates I've seen in other specialised forums. In the end nobody is really right or wrong, just like you often hear there is no perfect camera generally speaking.. and with log profiles & grading become so accessible, the difference becomes kinda marginal aside from purists points of view. Sure Black Magic's & ARRI's etc are cinema oriented cams and hence more filmic.. and the Sony's are better suited to dazzle with super-slo mo action or 4K cinematic commercials & music videos but that doesn't mean they're oriented towards non film educated or non passionate business persons. That's a bit too black & white a statement in 2016 imo. A lot of people have multiple needs these days. They might have commercial work and do narrative/docu on the side, or the opposite. All kinds of combinations but not necessarily budget for multiple specialised cameras. This is where the FS5 imo is a good all rounder with 10-bit S-log3, 12-bit 4K RAW option, 14 stops of DR and LUTs, EVF, modular, compact, S35 E-mount...etc. Getting back to the C100 though.. imo it's biggest advantage today is price, ergonomics, c-log & DPAF. it's biggest con imo is 8-bit output and poor AVCHD codec. Grading limits aside, this could be a problem in areas that require higher output (like BBC 10-bit 422 standard).
  8. lol.. the 18-35 is more like 5K.. but regardless that test is more about highlight rolloff from 12-bit raw and the 14 stops of DR then anamorphic properties and such..
  9. Just have a look around vimeo.. i have a hard time finding footage that doesn't stand out! and with the 4K 12-bit raw option now available, the camera has just turned into an IQ beast:
  10. This. I copped a C100 mk1 with DPAF upgrade secondhand last month for under $2K. I was actually saving up for an FS5 but couldn't pass on the deal. New I'd probably still go for the mk1 cuz indeed at $4K, we're approaching FS5 territory.. The mk1 EVF is terrible indeed but with a $40 C-cup it's usable. Not sure what you mean by FS5's "bad, buggy image", the firmware that came out 6 months ago fixed most of the noise problems (as documented by Andrew on this blog). The FS5 packs a lot of heat with 4K, 10-bit 422 1080p, usable S-Log3, 240fps & variable ND in a tight lightweight package. The IQ is great, but it's a Sony as far as colors (IQ is very similar to A7S2). It has a very "fresh" in-vogue looking image. C100 mk1 does have this filmic / classic docu look. I'm a fan of both looks, preference is kind of like picking between different film stocks..
  11. Yup that was pretty much my thought process. would much rather have a no fuss C100 with excellent 1080p IQ, great assist features (love the waveform view), shutter angle/gain levels, ND filters, XLRs, C-LOG & Wide DR PPs and last but not least the game changing DPAF.. also keep in mind it doesn't do 4K but uses the same sensor as the C300 and is 4K down sampled to 1080 image. it's a lot sharper then the soft 5D3 and actually holds up ok in full screen on a 4K monitor. when the time comes in a year or so, there will be plenty of 4K options to upgrade to with perhaps not all the compromises of these early gen hybrid cams.. plus yeah it does look the biz and i don't have clients looking at me funny like when using most DSLRs/mirrorless cams heh!
  12. Agreed.. something really weird about the motion. Will have to wait for real life tests to get a proper idea. Right now it's looking way too 'video'. Also am I the only one to find Fuji film simulations a bit over rated? Never been a fan of heavy baked in looks. It is an interesting concept, at least for still photography but the film simulations have nothing a proper LUT would give you imo. No IBIS, External F-log, Rolling shutter issues, limited/expensive native lens ... meh.. It sounds to me like Fuji is just jumping on the filmmaker bandwagon, but do they really have the chops? I guess it's still nice Sony finds itself a competitor.. Hopefully a real non-sponsored test will give the full breakdown, I certainly won't be the beta tester for yet another compromised new hybrid system.. hyped up solely on the premise of 4K and some "cool" retro picture profiles..
  13. Funny.. I just bought a 5DIII (there are crazy good deals on it right now) although mainly for stills and as B-cam to my recently acquired C100 DPAF. I just love the L glass.. and Canon skin tones. Ergonomics, doesn't get much better then EOS Cxx. A7S2 is seriously good but for it's price i've got a problem with the consumer-y body, horrible menu/ergonomics and battery life. and yeah S-log3 at 8-bit doesn't really cut it in post.. I'd wait a month or two until 5D4 gets announced if you wanna remain DSLR.. especially if you're invested in Canon glass..
  14. i just bought one few weeks ago ( c100 mk1 + DPAF) and i think it's a great value camera, definitely step above DSLR/mirrorless. DPAF especially a game changer for me. now VS the MK2, do you get a ton more no, but better ergonomics with c300 evf, full swivel screen, better codec options, 60fps, higher ISO range.. small improvements but that make it pretty much perfect.. with the previous pricing, C100 with DPAF was a better deal but now with less then a grand price difference, i'd maybe go with the mk2.. YMMV
  15. I always heard people moaning over EOS C line prices.. and when Canon do a massive price cut... people complain again lol.. but really it's no shocker.. C300 mkII being quite overpriced and C100 mkII due with an update soon that will surely include 4K (just like the rest of the rumoured 2016/17 pro DSLR range specs) . It's just Canon reacting to the market.. if 4K isn't a priority though i'd jump on the C100 mk2 deal, it's a pretty awesome camera..
  16. I played with one last week... man that rolling shutter has got to be the worst case ever.. i was getting all kinds of jello on slow movements! and i'm not even one to complain about rolling shutter in general.. along with the overheating this camera is imo borderline defective / unusable for most applications it seems geared towards. yeah it's got 4k, good AF & s-log but kinda worthless considering the other issues. i mean what's the point of such a portable camera if it only handles static shots on sticks?! should have at least included IBIS to perhaps reduce the jello or something. i'm dumbfounded by this unit. @Grégory LEROY : oublie l'A6300 pour ce que tu fais.. d'ailleurs c'est quoi au juste?! rassure moi, ce sont de vrais militaires??! pas l'air très safe ton truc..
  17. ^ doubt it's a regional thing.. for example the Full Sail University (FL) tech package consists of an FS5. if you're producing 4K (which most TV productions aren't) then FS5/FS7 really is the only place to go within the under $8K run&gun/doc/ENG cameras. they're definitely out in the wild, NYC homie shot this on a FS7 couple weeks ago:
  18. Amen to that although i don't think anyone in this thread has been bashing Sony. I think it's just interesting/pleasing for C100 owners to see such an under-rated camera which is often claimed obsolete (Andrew even called it rubbish in his recent blog about C500) used at such high-profile event. Sony's are definitely selling like hot cakes and for good reason, especially in the mirrorless vs DSLR segment. Yet in certain pro segments, Canon still dominates.. like the 5D3 in wedding/event photography despite the 2012 body being largely surpassed in color depth, DR & megapixels by both Sony/Nikon. It's true though it's mostly has to do with longevity due to Canon's slow upgrade strategy. My local vid equipment rental store (the largest in the region) obviously has way more C100/300 cams in stock then FS5/7s probably due to them being available for so much longer then the Sonys. What's interesting is they are harder to get a hold of and rent for same if not more then FS5/7 despite being cheaper retail (rental prices being set on offer/demand ratio). Sony's fast upgrade cycle, which is what allows them to be so competitive tech wise is also it's achilles foot, sometimes releasing unfinished products with issues which can give potential buyers (especially pros) cold feet.
  19. There is no doubt FS7 is a superior camera and this is coming from a new C100 owner.. aside for 3 things: color science, ergonomics & autofocus. i suspect the later is why it's being used in above situation. I just shot a run&gun event this week-end with a busy crowd and had to hold the camera above eye level similarly to the screen capture above, well dual pixel AF made the shooting effortless where i suspect i'd be struggling with just about any other cam/DSLR..
  20. I've shot with all the BM's, my favorites being the original BMCC with speedbooster + Nikkor glass and the latest UM 4.6K. BMPC4K/UM4K sit somewhere in between, they're capable of great imagery sure but only 10-11 stops and 400 ISO native really limits their use imo. I'm on Day 2 with the C100, honeymoon phase so probably not too objective but what's for sure is it's so sweet ergonomically. After years of DSLR film making, which has always felt awkward, its so good to have such a form factor and dedicated buttons for peaking, zebras, waveform, picture profiles etc.. can't wait to stick some sick cine glass and see what this sucker is capable of.. let's not forget glass and grade is half the equation, here is some filmic footage of the "cheap" "rubbish" C100:
  21. well i guess i'm fucked cuz i just bought that c100 today! seriously though i can tell you none of my clients have yet required 4K and i've got some pretty damn big clients on the corporate side (i'm not in the US though). and i doubt i'm the only one left delivering 1080p in 2016. in 6 months or a year things could be different. my mate has an A7S2 and has only yet delivered 1080p with it. if i need 4k tomorrow i can borrow or rent whatever 4K camera the budget allows. as for Ursa Mini 4.6K, did you read my previous post? cuz i state quite clearly it's the best IQ for the money. but a rigged up UM 4.6K will run you $7-8K minimum, has a native iso of 800, no ND's etc... and that's without counting the magenta issue plaguing 99% of the units out there. weight wise, i'm sorry but with the EVF, handle and V-mount battery it weighs a ton and would be super impractical for a wedding type event.. i got the C100 for run & gun. stripped down it's friggin tiny yet offers NDs, waveform assist etc.. got it for dirt cheap too so i couldn't pass on the deal (basically the price of a nice lens) at some random camera store that had no clue about video stuff.. they didn't even realise it had dual pix upgrade. i'm not oblivious to the fact i'll probably outgrow it sooner then later, just didn't wanna drop loads at this point on gear i'm not 100% feeling (i.e current Sony / BM products). that's just my opinion though, to each their own...
  22. Recommendations are a little all over the place with just about everybody's favorite cam being suggested.. they're all valid choices as it's really a question of budget and type of use needed. Cine cams (BM, Kine etc) obviously have the best IQ with high DR, resolution and Raw/Prores codecs. But they need accessories, end up being bulky and require heavy workflow. Then you got the Canons & Sonys with various models at according price points. If you're going that route just get the best money can afford. FWIW i was leaning towards Sony (A7SII/FS5) for the 4K & slo-mo but just might pick-up a C100 (mk1 + DPAF) after testing one yesterday (thanks to this thread!). The dual pixel and ergonomics do make this cam an effortless experience which can never be too underestimated. C-log is really something special although I'm also a big fan of S-Log2/3 (it's kind of like film stock preference at this point). Lack of 4K and the 8-bit recording is the obvious elephant in the room but in actual use the C100 footage is actually quite impressive despite the specs. I've been playing around with it's footage on a iMac 5K and not only does it grade fairly nicely (for AVCHD) but it surprisingly holds up ok in full screen (whereas 5D3/D750 become a soft mushy mess on 5K display). Pretty sure this all has to do with the C100's image being 1080 downscaled from 4K sensor, as talked about in another thread this effectively may mean a much higher quality image as far as sharpness and color info then you're regular HD DSLR. Now of course true 4K cams have their clear advantage so if you're looking to invest for the next few years, C100 (I/II) is probably not a great idea, actually many would argue it's already obsolete but if you can live with 1080, it's definitely a step up from DSLR and when you factor in ergonomics & workflow, it's actually a very good choice/deal..
  23. I'm also looking to upgrade from the D750, which indeed has nice colors & DR but is soft (a la 5D III) and can't be pushed much in post. i tried the ursa mini 4.6k (which btw is useable up until 1600, it's the regular 4K that has base iso 400) and has by far the best image for the asking price. 4K 10-bit internal Raw/Prores recording with 15 DR stops gives you a crazy good image that's super flexible in post. BUT the camera weighs a ton once it's rigged up with just handle, v-mount battery, evf. no ND filters and those CF2 cards cost a leg. It's really a RED/ARRI type cine camera, not meant for small crew run&gun.. The C100II is i find way overpriced for essentially a 2012 cam with added dual pixel AF. the image it spits out is nice and sharp but that 24meg AVCHD codec is weak and of course no 4K. The best investment today for run&gun video imo is the A7S2 / FS5 & 1DX2. But in september it could be different since Canon should be announcing the 5D4 and hopefully C100 III (with 4K). Sony is also rumored to come out with the A9 and perhaps A7R3. These new Sony's would have equivalent or better dual pixel AF (which i feel is the current/next big thing to have in video). So if you can wait it out, there should be some interesting products coming out by the end of this year..
  24. It's funny I've had the opposite reaction towards this camera. Thought it was interesting on paper (4K, 422, decent codec & canon log under $2K had me sold) but in actual use it was a huge let down. Number one issue the lens and specifically the unusable focus ring. I see MF listed in the cons of the review but it can't be stressed enough how shitty it is. It seems Andrew may overcome this issue because he considers the AF to be ace but it isn't DPAF good either imo, and goofy MF is a deal breaker for me. I was also far from blown away by the IQ, but this type of lens just isn't my cup of tea I'm afraid..
