I do believe Ebrahim Saadawi, the radiologist exist. Here's a post, more than 2 years back where he tells about being a radiologist for 40 years:

I doubt a physician with a PhD in radiology needs to scam people online. Considering his reply in this very thread (and the 2 year old one), I find it likely to be true that he actually has that clinic he talked about. I would find it unlikely that he would have spent 2 years creating a fake identity as the radiologist/doctor on this forum - just to finally commit a scam.

If those are plausible I'd also find it plausible about what he wrote about the media company (I also have memories about him mentioning that company many months ago, maybe a year ago). Then it might very well be that there are several people in his media company that has access, just as the post in this thread stated.

If those above are plausible, then it's also likely to be correct what he wrote about the rangefinder being at the media company - and someone having access to it there. If there's a media company, IP addresses will most likely be unusable, as someone could have used the company's Internet.

So, hence I believe the best thing is to get in contact with Senior, and the very best method would be a video call to verify identity. No need for slandering in a forum thread, just try to reach the real source. IF that can be done - and data can be extracted from the accounts, there are better methods for tracing who committed the scam: like dumping the Facebook data dump that you can download - and dig through that one for evidence. But doing this, requires that the account owner still has access to the account.

I told these things earlier to the people who got scammed. Thought I wouldn't add to this thread, but doing it due to all of this speculation...

Hey, there is an idea, Mr Sawaadi, I will interview you on Skype, and we can clear this up. We are video experts after all, right?

I just did the same thing.

I'll put out a conspiracy theory...

I think the guy exists, but I don't think it is the same guy posting - even the informative posts. For someone with a life and career like that, I cannot imagine they would take the hours needed to write the in-depth posts he writes. I would likely assume that is is a shared account of a company that had some sort of social media marketing campaign that involved forum posting etc, probably funded by some rich dude. Or there was no company and it was a large social media build up at a long term scam that got cut short because they couldn't think of a way to bank big. I am sure selling a red package was on the list.

I would doubt that if you searched long and hard you would ever find more that a social media footprint of this guy. I think it was an, almost, genius scam run by a few people who know about consumer gear from reading online.

    Thats my theory anyways....

It does somehow reek of a more elaborate version of those obviously fake facebook accounts I get requests from sometimes..

    Okay,

You have no obligation to trust my words, and I don't actually need you to trust them as it doesn't harm me in anyway.

Before anything else, this is Saadawi Senior. This comes as a shocker to me as much as it does to any of you. And I thank all of the comments on this thread speaking of how I helped them throughout the years here. Let me thank you deeply (as this is probably going to be my last chance before being banned). So truly, thank you. I learnt just as much from you, even from 16 year old who are getting into their first cameras offered me amazing help and prespective I'd never got in my 21 years shooting motion picture film. Again thank you.

Regarding this scam. I have zero idea how it happened and how. All of Mattius guesses are plausible. But my first and most suspected guess (90% sure of it),

1- Is that someone here, someone close to me did it.

I say so because no one outside of my close circle of Saadawi Media company knows and has access to my gear quite so specifically. And because the password of all my accounts on EOSHD/DVX/FB is pretty much known to be simply my name. So those are the ones who had access to perform such a scam. Thus, this is 100% someone close.

2- It's not my grandson Ebrahim, as he asks for a thousand dollars and I give him. He never needed a penny that I didn't offer. We have a relationship stronger than iron, and we both need no money of this kind. I run a successful Nuclear Radiology Center, Lecture in Middle east's highest regarded universities, and I run Al Saadawi Media, let's not get into numbers but I have no need to scam anyone for 1000-2000 USD while I make that in a day, therefore neither does my grandson. Because what I make, he receives as well.

3- To let you know: this isn't just Timotheus who's been scammed. I just looked into the inbox of this account on EOSHD and Facebook, and it's 6 people who have been scammed. Three were scammed for about 250-300$, and 3 were scammed for 650-700 USD for Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 Ai-S. And the buyers were given photographs of my actual personal items, not from somewhere else (which makes me baffled, he/she got into my gear closet and took these photographs SO incredibly rudely and fear-free. I can tell that by the little mark on the SLR on the front ring thread and from a unique accumulation of specks of dust on the Nikkor rubber zoom ring.

4- I have no idea what to do or who to accuse or sue, no evidence and no way for me to proof who did it. And sadly, the sole channel to send money into Egypt is Western Union money Transfer (Paypal doesn't work as someone assumed earlier, it works only for sending out payments not vice versa), and the way the scam worked is that the buyer send the money as a regular transfer, just giving someone a payment for any reason, and once they recieve it of course there's no way to claim it back or sue or any of that. It's gone. So legally 6 people just sent him money and he received it, no more.

5- I will do my best to figure out who did this to me, and wrote all these messages to more than 4 people that are incredibly insulting to me and to the reader and to the forums/countries where the sellers are from.

6- Even if I couldn't figure out who did this, I promise that I will refund all of those who have been scammed through my own pocket someday, even when I have no obligation to.

7- I will no longer use this account because more scams might be made through it. But I do hope it doesn't get banned just as reminder of the name and the contribution points. I'll just change the password and leave it as there. it's a shame because I considered EOSHD to be my bigger family. But anyhow even if members do trust me this situation will always keep a bad taste in your mouths for me and my sayings.

8- For anyone who wishes to keep in contact with me, I'd happily do so through Ebrahimsaadawi@gmail.com as this is probably my last contribution here.

Thank you and I am deeply sorry.

This post reads like bullshit to me..  why not refund the money right now, since you are so well off? Why would you be banned for trying to get on here and sort it out? And why would you say that you have no obligation to refund the money, when you admit it was someone very close to you? Does this not sound like the tone of the young punk and his message on facebook? Is there an Ebrahim Sr, or has it just been a scam all along? If there are 6 people admitted as being scammed, are there really more? Has someone been standing too close to a nuclear radiology machine?  Did we really go to the moon? Will a hero solve the mystery, get the girl, and ride off into the sunset? Time may tell:)

Oh ok, that's nice. Please post a lotta pic on Flickr (I love pixel peeping). This lens + camera combination is excellent.

The 20mm f1.7 (i and ii) is a very strange lens. Its focus speed is quite slow, it is quite noisy, and it has one more curious issue that I suddenly cannot recollect. Avoid it, if its Tiny Size is what is attracting you. It is reasonably sharp, though.

Always liked the look of this lens - seems to have nice falloff to the oof areas

  6. I would have to say the a7s 2, just in case you want to do a film in the dark! Truly ground breaking camera for me.. I am intrigued by the a7r 2's incredibly low rolling shutter in 1080p aspc though.. 7ms!

Add into it the tendency to evangelize and thus rationalize one's camera purchase... which is a pretty big inclination among enthusiast (and even pros) and you get opinions that are clouded with so much subjective attitude they're sort of worthless.

Bottom line, if it works for you, have at it.

I am more like "the grass is greener over the other side of the fence" too often :)

Such conflicting opinions. I primarily use vintage lenses and one thing I did notice with the G7 and now with BMMCC is that the crop factor sometimes crops out some of the character of the lenses and since I will primarily use vintage lenses for stills as well, I wonder how much that will come into play? Honestly, I am completely in the middle on this one. I also have a couple small paid gigs at the end of the summer that will affect my decision based on the video side of the camera.

Hey, if you are learning stills, the Panasonics should be great, but if you really need them, a serious amateur or even pro might be happy to shoot for next to nothing .. even quick shots I grabbed with a serious stills guy's kit (a 7d and canon L 70-200 I think) seemed good, and the shots they got looked awesome to me :)

These are out of cam, and I suppose most stills get tons of post these days anyway - but also like the video I suppose, Canon stuff just seems to come out of the camera more "right"!

You photos look like those taken from early phone cameras with resolutions running in 1 and 2 Megapixels. Even the one from the GX7. What could be the secret?

Haha, thanks... they have all gone through FB processing, had some grain etc.. maybe it's just the look I like in stills out of the Panasonic! I actually prefer frames I have pulled from the video footage to any still I have taken on the Panasonics..!? That's the thing though, I never felt the Panny's stills were better than my phone, with any lens I've tried - but the first time I took a shot with the Canon 50d I was amazed by the difference I could see.. for a real hybrid cam I would get a 5d mk2 myself I reckon ..or even an eos M. I am definitely not a stills expert in any way, just my own percieved take on the aesthetics... most total beginner serious stills shooters with any cameras seem take way better shots than I ever get :) You could definitely learn most everything for stills on the Panasonics, tons of photo features.. their stills just never seem to wow me for some reason. I have always gotten cams just for video - but putting the 50d next to the panasonics for stills I saw a huge difference! Maybe it's just me - some people like them, and they are very convienient, great for lenses .. the pics just never do it for me somehow..

  10. Untitled_1.1.1.jpg

Quick balance with my normal Panasonic workflow Premiere Pro - Neat Video with a little sharpen, .4% guassian blur, Film Convert gh4 profiles, about 40% grain and 80-90% film colour, quick balance in the lumetri panel on this one to kill the highlights/whites a bit - then to Resolve for RGB curves, more highlight/contrast/black balance, lum/sat and sat/sat curves.. this one I cooled the colour temp a bit, no windows or sharpening in resolve - barely touch the colour wheels anymore, prefer to play with colour temp and saturation curves only these days. Quick worklflow now it's up and running, even with this rescue job a few minutes got me to a good starting point.. having to squash the highs on these cams tends to kill the mids alot too..

Source footage definitely way overblown:) was fun to try and tame the highlights on this one!

I love netflix as a happy medium. Everyone has netflix, it's not illegal, money is exchanged, comes with tons of films. I used to torrent, but since netflix, I don't think I have at all (though I also have hulu, amazon prime, directv, and hbogo /: ). Netflix's recent price increases have me nervous if they ended up being the only one in the game.. also netflix has also made me less eager to go to theatres and made me never want to try louis ck's new show.. so mybe the same torrent-minded entitlement.

Not sure what I'd prefer as the filmmaker... I guess just for money to fall out of the sky

Horace and Pete? One of the best things I've seen.. truly groundbreaking I reckon

Wow, I watched all of Horace and Pete, and loved it. Truly groundbreaking I reckon! :)
