If you don't need a recorder as well, and want max bang for your buck then get a Lilliput A5. I have one, and have been happy with....
Yeah, I kind of reserved one two days ago. I thought Video assist is not important if I go the p4k route. But with Z6 in mind it might be quite nice to play with the 10 bit nlog files....hence it might be reasonable to get a recorder.
@IronFilmwould you suggest to to kill two flies in one go if I get the BM 4K assist that seems to have reasonable audio recording, phantom power, mini xlr ....as well?
? is there any reason to believe the z6 is not superior to the a7iii? Bridge under the water. Love you all ?

Well Atomos Seems to be the Only one that can do N Log. So it seems like a no brainer on the new Ninja V. But big difference if you are Just looking for a Monitor, versus a Recorder price wise.
May as well get a recorder to fool around with nlog.

Sony at least had 5 lenses at lunch and the 16-35mm f/4 very shortly after. That included a 70-200/4 as well as two standard zooms plus the 35 and 55. But people absolutely sulked constantly about the lens lineup. You would think Nikon would have learned from Sony’s mistakes, I mean that’s the whole point of hanging back right?
You are right unless all the F lenses also work flawlessly. If that is the case and you might be already a Nikon shooter you have arguably one of the best lens lineup at your disposal...

I am in the market for a 5'ish monitor. In foresight should I go with Atomos rather than BM video assist which is probably due to an update?
From what I have seen so far the z6 ticks all my boxes for the end of time. Not sure about their lens strategy though. Hopefully adapted F lenses will video af as nice. Can't wait to fondle it abit....

"Nikon put some rich bastards in a fancy car to make a stunning blown-out highlights compilation reel, which resonates with absolutely no photographer or filmmaker anywhere."
Ha. Watched that vid and thought, man, I'm good enough to make something that flawed. How do I get hired for those types of gigs?
Exactly, insanity.

Thanks ?. So to run resolve full screen you get that ?direkt link? PCI Card? Doing resolve on a 4K screen with hd video you still can see it in full rez no? I am one of those still on CS6 not going nowhere near subscription, hopefully i can install that on win10 and runs as smoothly as on my old dog.
So you’d go:
- 6core cpu
- gpu as big as possible maxed by budget it will be 8gb
one 4K screen first
cheers

Lucky me it is time to upgrade to a more recent desktop pc after 10 years of drinking coffee while the computer is rendering.
I would love to get some insights about what is really necessary. Budget is about 500-1500€ plus maybe a cheeky monitor thrown in. I would love make the switch to resolve completely once p4k is the new king of the castle. Until then it should slice up compressed hd files like hot knife through butter in premiere and resolve.
Would you go double screen or wide screen. Maybe a wide hd and added 4K screen? And what does this mean for GPU? Should I keep in mind to go double GPU in the future? Should I go Gtx 1080 or are the 4gb ones ok even for moderate 4K editing?
It looks like options are getting a cheap two generations down pc for 450,- which will blow my old machine away but maybe not bulletproof enough to last me through my 4K life?
Or do you suggest getting 1080 double gpu Ryzen Threadkiller or biggest 7 and save up a bit longer? I mainly shoot short I image videos up to 5min with transitions, speed ramping, grain, etc.. maybe a title animation grown in there, nothing to fancy.
Helpful would probably be something like: “I have this setup and shoot gh5 4K easy.....” so I can get a bit more perspective.
Thanks!

It’s obvious I am referring to the future.
But you enjoy trolling me too much. ?
When I last looked this thread was about the near "future" aka Nikon full frame mirrorless with one of the sensors being 8k, like in the d850. Same with a7r probably roughly 8k, too? This is for photo obviously but the sensor does not know this when scanning progressive more does the lens. What has super35 to do with it?
Good night.

Well even Canon Only recommends 36 lenses for their Canon 5DS r. So they all can't be as great as you seem to think. Sure 8mp. 4K, 8K doubt it.
https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=15356
Well 36 lenses is enough for me. ? No idea how many nikon has recommended but 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 and then a hand full of primes say 20 28 50 85 180 300, sorry that was six plus the three zooms. Maybe a supertele makes ten in total. ?
41 minutes ago, jonpais said:There’s a great deal more to it than just resolution - focus accuracy, field curvature, lenses that were previously thought to be parfocal, a slightly decentered lens - all these will be much more noticeable in 6K and 8K.
Similarly, shooting 1080p with a $129 lens might look passable on a five year-old Macbook Air, but won’t necessarily hold up when viewed on a 65-inch OLED.
And it’s quite possible that even 8K is wasted somewhat on sensors smaller than Super 35mm.
So I’m a little skeptical of figures like ‘99% of such and such’, especially at wider apertures, and if we’re looking at more than center sharpness.
Sorry, I don't get it. A lens that resolves 46mp in photos is suddenly not good enough for video were it is rezed down to 4k? I get the rest but again why would this be more critical in video? Which hybrid cam can shoot 8k video at the moment?
-
Sorry, was trolling. I will stay out of this thread. These Sony colour discussion and writing home about how incredible the a7III is have melted my brain.
6 month ago @jonpais gh5 was the ducks nuts before it got completely trashed by gh5s and now with a7III it has become a drag to use.
Sorry to everone.

Well if focusing an enlarger was problematic then surely moving subjects are a nightmare to track.
I understand that tech is an enabler and that is great. You made the right choice the latest Sonya is great.
-
I wonder how bottom feeder video production was even possible before 2018 and Sonya 73. Basically there is no skill required anymore to shoot groundbreaking stuff.
-
Amen to that Andrew. Surely Nikon needs to wake up and get going. But the last full frame Nikon dslr's have been awesome and still are for a hybrid shooter...translating that over to a mirrorless is nothing to be ashamed off and definitely good enough for me.
-
I know they sell a fair amount Mf. lenses. And rightly so some of them are Manufactured to a standard that have and will out last any electronic plastic lens. Better some compatibility issues (for low grade cameras) than no compatibility at all.
What screw lenses are they still selling?
Wow, it seems like lots of the af-d stuff is still at least in stock if not in production.

They were not made for mirrorless cameras, and not for 4k and above. Canon has a lot of the same shit problem. This is 2018 DUDE! Every lens Sony has on the FE ones is brand new tech.. Not some Nikon F stuff back in 1972.
You might be right, it's just that I don't care really.
What do you mean by tech grinding glass, coating, focus, weather sealing, etc.?
5 minutes ago, webrunner5 said:Plus Nikon has sort of painted themselves in a corner with the focus motor in body. I have no clue what they will do yet, but I would not be surprised to see this new body with No motor in it at all. I would think an adapter with a motor in it is possible, but I think moving forward they have to change their lens concept.
Surely they don't sell any screw drive lens anymore. They will have it in the adapter and it would be smart move to do so. Sorry I don't get the lens concept part. Afaik lenses have glass in them and a servo motor that is focusing. How is Sony ground breaking tech compared to canons dpaf lenses? That apparently do. a much better focusing job in video?
-
@webrunner5sorry dude but in no way Is nikons lens lineup outdated. How can you say this while there are still millions of f mount lenses being shot everyday no matter if video or photo.

I have never used a very expensive fluid head I can only imagine it would be like a finger in a pie. But he "only" wants to put a d800 on it. I tested this amazon travel tripod for 100 bucks once and also no fluid head smooth enough to do a straight forward pan on it.
-
@MdB thank god i know f... all about sensor tech. But you make it look like Nikon is allowed to pick what Sony is giving them. I doubt that is the case. Why would it be 46mp? Was that something Sony just had laying around? Probably time will tell once those 46mp sensors start poping up everywhere.

It's got nothing to do with actual doing "film" making so I voted away with it. I agree that there are pressures topics regarding freedom of speech in the realm of artistic expression etc... but for me discussing them here does not advance my knowledge of constructing arguments in a visual way.
Maybe a sub forum can bundle the message, media and artist, rights discourse better.

@cantsin that is what I am worried about. I think they should have tried to boost it instead of reducing it. But then again I also have not much knowledge about the subject. When I shoot PHOTO real estate sometimes (not super super high value) I sometimes stopped to bracket stuff because the d750 RAWs are that crazy that if exposure is up to 3 stops over I might even be able to recover a fair bit and it is god enough for the purpose. I wonder how that relates to RAW video on the P4K.
I surpose my question is, does the 13 stops relate to jpg oder raw were you have a great amount of data?

@Robert Collins I am a noob but if you can't see the differences how Nikon/Canon render mixed lighting compared to Sony like @Django was trying to show you than colour is existentially lost on you or you are trolling....

Well lets start by getting this one out of the way. 'Color science' is an oxymoron. Because science deals with facts and color is a perception. Exactly the same rose will 'look' a different red to anyone against a blue background than a green background.
And I just feel there is a whole less 'science' and a whole lot more 'subjectivity'than people imagine.
And let me explain something very basic.
I havent been doing video very long (I am a photographer) - about 6 months. But I have been studying hard and trying to learn. I have learnt that pretty much everyone goes for or likes a 'filmic' look. But however you analyse the 'filmic look' (so somewhere near to science) it is 'achieved' by actually 'degrading' in an 'objective' sense the underlying image. Nearly all the characteristics of the filmic look is about making the underlying image crappier. That goes for 'low contrast', 'less sharpness', 'adding grain', 'less accurate colors', even the '180 degree rule'.
The very phrase 'filmic' smacks not of 'science' but 'subjectivity'. When people talk of film cameras, ancient lenses etc and the results they produce they are 'definitely' talking aesthetics and not science. In an artistic sense imperfections are very important - the Mona Lisa wouldnt be the Mona Lisa without the crooked smile. And even the smartphone image we love to hate is largely a case of it being too good rather than too bad.
I think you are getting two different things mixed up here. "Colour science" data acquisition and translation of the sensor pipeline on to the memory. The other thing is "filmic look". As a photographer you should know, there is no wrong or right, there are trends and is changing and evolving depending how you look at it. What film? What format? Lenses? Push, pull, resulting grain......put in endless factors here......
Canon compared to Sony simply has a fairly well controlled translation of what the sensor is capturing in regards to the human eye.
1 hour ago, sam said:@Robert CollinsColor science is an industry standard term. Are you trying to dispute that? Or others interpretation of the term? If it's the latter, thats understandable.
However, if its the former, I don't feel an internet forum lends itself to such a vast topic. (Like your areas of expertise)
If you truly want to learn about video, why not a reputable book? Anything by Charles Poynton seems like it might be a good fit.
That.
