  1. UPDATE: OMG I MADE A RAW VIDEO!!!! 2. OMGZ GUYS I FINALLY GOT A 5D3!!!!! ?????? for those interested i need it now for stills so i bought it used off craigslist here in california for $1800 - came with 4 batteries, battery grip, 2 chargers, sd card, cf card, and 40mm pancake. its still under the resellers warranty (not canon, local shop) for another month, two small marks on the bottom of the body otherwise in great condition, and 12k on the shutter. the seller was legit and he already had magic lantern on the sd card! so.... PLEASE HELP ME WITH MAGIC LANTERN RAW 5D3 BEST CURRENT PRACTICES Whats the easy way to do things in terms of workflow? Mind you i am brand new to this so dont spare the details. I have a mac with the adobe suite, fcpx and resolve lite. speaking of which... TRY RESOLVE ITS FREE i really have to thank you all for teaching me so much over the years ive read this board. when i first downloaded and opened resolve i had NO idea what was going on. thanks to a lot of learning i am now able to get into it a bit and i love it - resolve is AWESOME. and ykno what? it wasnt nearly as hard to get started as i thought it was going to be so this is a special message for anyone who has had the ambition to try resolve but is too intimidated, or someone who tried in the past and gave up almost immediately (me lol). its really not that hard at all, for me the big disconnect was never using a node based app before and being terrified of that for some reason, but nodes are kinda like a tree of adjustment layers - its just weird looking at first ? /anyway please prescribe me a raw workflow!!! id like to use resolve cuz i wanna learn it anyway but im open to whatever. any tips/tricks/pitfalls to avoid also much appreciated!!!!!! thanks for the inspiration and all the knowledge guys!!! i really might not have bought this camera if not for eoshd ?

    Animation?

wow i love animation what a fun topic!! so awesome this is some of my favorite stuff ever – btw im discussing all of this in a purely visual sense rn just gorgeous 2d design what a genius ive drawn a lot, and thought about drawing a lot more, but i just dont have the talent of these illustrators in any way shape or form – im good at copying. whenever i look at animators sketchbooks im just like wtf. they amaze me 99% of the drawing i do is based on photographic imagery that i create, not unlike whats going on below. classic disney animation is some of the most lyrical, beautiful work of its kind to me, just delightful so, since youre already a cinematographer, you could make that work for you in all kinds of ways. and im not saying start drawing like those disney dudes... i certainly cant... you can abstract photo derived imagery almost to oblivion as an animator with powerful results that retain the gestalt of what youve shot then again something completely different i was gonna make an analogy about dons work with the simplicity of the simpsons and then i was like OH SNAP MY FAVORITE COUCH GAG (simpsons intro) this is disturbing and beautiful STILL LOVE U HOMAR "When simplicity goes head to head with complexity, simplicity will win every time" ^ example the more iconic your work, the weirder you can get. i mean this is a dog and a cat..... a dog and a cat im working on my own take on animation... its coming along but unfortunately ive failed at inventing a technique thats easy lol anyway animation +/- + beloved by people of all ages, transcends race and culture + can be done by one person + easy to be unique - hard - time consuming and as always, the age old saying "if its not on the page its not on the stage" holds true – write something you love first! thatll get you through the long nights slaving over a hot computer ? also... this was way ahead of its time
  4. You can buy one from me right now – Blackmagic has made me a beta tester due to my honor points on this forum. I have shot some excellent pyramid footage near my home that i cannot upload at this time. Please PM me for western union details
  5. so crazy. im gonna buy one out of principle just to have a $15k slr if it was me id prolly keep it, although i might feel a little betrayed by the seller – then again thats a little irrational since hes willing to take the return. ive been shopping for a used 5d3 and a lot of people have "forgotten" to tell me stuff (like theyre lying) anyway $3100 is a great deal. does the cosmetic damage bother you? are you definitely gonna have the screen replaced? if that damage was in the middle of the screen id say take way more off the price, but because of where it is maybe i could live with it. then again how much is a new screen from canon? $400? $900? i have more questions than answers lol im the worst sorry
  6. are you using a mac or a pc? ipad/tablet? you prolly already have software thatll work fine, not quite as simple as drag and drop, although Pages on a mac is pretty close anyway, this stuff is super simple. i bet if you tried using ~any~ word processing app you could do this just fine... its just some text and photos! dont be intimidated i promise its super simple
  7. i was gonna make an ironic comment about how the video sucks but the music is great and then i was like Hmm some people might miss my sarcasm and... sure enough there it is second comment on the youtube page "Great video! What's the title of the music, thanks!"
  8. interviewer: so why doesnt the 5d4 have clog canon guy: *stammers* man i thought he was about to pass out~! like hillary having one of her seizures
  9. lol oh thank you i meant that it just says watch on vimeo when its embedded bc its private ? that flippy screen tho
  10. i cant embed this video but it looks p good from a 80d https://vimeo.com/181718305
  11. i feel like hfr stuff speaks to the same principle – more is not more, less is more when it comes to people talking for hours. the failed experiment of the hobbit comes to mind. tbh fuzzy, youre so old school (which i like), i thought youd hate high frame rates? on the other hand i support high frame rates for other stuff – vr, videogames, etc. but, as an inverse to my point above, i think that high frame rates are most at home with super visually iconic content, like this
  12. ive given this a lot of thought, and, imho: film grain, as we know it, adds a lot to a certain kind of motion picture filmmaking. would it add a lot to gopro drone footage of a beach? no, and heres why youre looking at the beach. watching a movie is like looking though a window as opposed to looking at a window a huge amount of narrative filmmaking is just footage of people talking. when we experience a conversation in real life, we dont look AT the person we're talking to the same way we look AT the beach video. this is one of the reasons that super shallow depth of field can be effective – im not looking at the tip of your nose while im talking to you. scott mccloud explains it like this film grain provides a visually soothing abstraction of reality that is particularly useful for movies where people are talking to each other for 2 hours. its organic rhythm gives us a sort of translucent repeating pattern to look through that we perceive on a conscious as well as an unconscious level. it relaxes us, to listen to a story – its subliminal; hypnotic. and it feels more like real life when we're interacting with people, as illustrated above although film grain is great at doing all this, what im describing should apply to any kind of subtle pattern noise – which is something im going to experiment with. im not suggesting that a film image is empirically better than a noiseless alexa image, but for reservoir dogs, i think it is. a new purely digital patterned noise that does not seek to emulate film grain would prolly work pretty well too – as long as its not distracting or hideous, obviously. id like to develop that idea and now, back to your regularly scheduled programming
  13. oh i agree, there was some irony in my rant. and im shopping for a deal on a mk3 too ? i hear ya. sounds like a plan. tbh a big part of my complainyness comes from learning stills shooting 35mm film, im one of those many legacy photographers who likes ff as much for aesthetic reasons as because it reminds me of my childhood ?
  14. this is hilarious, @Sam232 congratulations on your first post. i would quit now while youre ahead to maintain the best possible honor points ratio oh snap! im not done complaining about this camera yet!!! IF THE 5D4 HAD A KILLER 2K MODE WITH A BUNCH OF FRAME RATE OPTIONS I WOULDNT BE AS MAD ABOUT THE HUGE 4K CROP WTF CANON ARRRGGHHHH
  15. @Andrew Reid this is fantastic looks like you did a great job! really looking forward to seeing the results on a 1dx2 could someone post some mjpeg EOSHDclog footage ungraded? ideally with a human in it? i kno thats asking a lot sorry lol
  16. agree. or longer. or never fair enough, but to me the ml 5d3 raw is a ~unique~ video image. one of a kind. its not those other cameras, great as they may be. those who dont feel that way – of whom there are many – are obviously not interested in hacking an existing canon slr, let alone a brand new one for me a 5d4 is extremely attractive with a raw video hack, even at an improved 1080p, but thats in addition to its features as a stills camera. i want a camera that does both, one thats stealthy enough to not attract attention im sure there are others on this board who always post about video and never about stills, like me, who have just as much interest in a "hybrid" camera sorry i dont mean to come off as didactic, its just that i forget that myself sometimes lol. cuz if i didnt give an f about video and i just shot stills with a 5d3 id prolly look at a 5d4 as a great upgrade
  17. love: raw stills color/ml raw color. it needs some wrangling (neon greens?) but it makes people look AHmazing. incredibly lifelike and also very flattering hate: they still havent made an affordable slr that shoots awesome 1080p... still.
  18. you guysll be happy to know that there is talk of the rock wrestling vin diesel at next years wrestlemania. for real and guess what else... hes gonna be a governor or even president one day. hes been talking about it for years. again – for real. arnold schwarzenegger was governor of california i predicted his success as an actor a loooong time ago so mark my words. and he deserves to make the most money in hollywood – hes the biggest draw, biggest name, puts asses in seats, kills it on social media, hes the hardest working guy in show business that has nothing to do with the fact that hollywood is at an all time low in terms of serious content creation, but dont blame dwayne for his success in the world we share. hes all over the moment we live in also the rock is a god hes a man and a half. hes HUGE. hes super athletic, he has more charisma in his little finger than most of these guys have in their entire bodies and now john cenas getting over in hollywood and with audiences as an actor thanks to some huge behind the scenes push.... i can only dream of having agents like that. and cena will do it... he'll become a movie star. at one time i said no (hes tried this before to a lesser degree) but audiences like him now but cenas no rock. of course, you guys already know that
  19. thats exactly what i meant, thank you any chance of ml turning their attention towards the 1dxii? maybe the 5d mark v will have cfast 2.0 when it comes out in 2020 ?
