The only camera I've owned with IS was the HVX 200...so I have yet to really understand the freedom you can get with handheld on the G85, and when I get mine, the GH5...you produce beautiful stuff, but I imagine you paid your dues learning the fundamentals a long time ago to come up with this stuff...of course, as you stated, you shoot everything in manual anyway...and the GH4 new is still over $200 more than the G85 which I've never owned, but seems to produce even better images under certain conditions than a GH4....I record strictly to external in 10bit Prores so my needs are different...

I wont start picking here, everybody as he or she likes. However I doubt that you need all those features of the GH4 to "learn video". How do you define to "learn video" anyway? Did I not "learn video" because I did not have a GH4 and used all of its functionality but merely a GM1 and a GX80? Does this make my work less good?
On the one hand you are saying basically that @jonpais is not right with his G85 recommendation because no one needs IBIS to "learn video" - yet on the other hand you practically tell him what he MUST have (vector scope, yadda yadda) to learn the craft. Seems to me like you are putting YOUR vision of how to learn video on him, the very same thing you didnt like in jonpais' statement. In the very same moment you encourage him to buy the GH4, which again is just your opinion - why is it any better than our opinions? Sounds weird to me, no offense.
It always depends on what you need. @vladsaysF just need to think about what kind of work he wants to do and then pick the right camera, end of story.

I agree with @fuzzynormal going down the prime route. I did it myself, too (more by accident, because I just lusted the Voigtländer). When I later tried some zooms, they gave me more freedom in choice, but I found out that I either use them at the shortest or at the longest focal length and that it distracted me a lot. So if I were you, I would try to find out which focal length I might be using most of the time and go for that. I started with 25mm and now went down to 17mm (4k crop) which suits me most. Occasionally I would love to have something even wider, but thats not that often.
So, it all depends on what you need. The maybe ideal focal length compromise would be 20mm - the Panasonic 20 1.7 is just about perfect, if not for the slowish AF. If you want more tele, choose one of the 25mm lenses either from Panasonic (Summilux 25 1.4) or the Olympus (25 1.8) - both are fine lenses. If you want to go wider, go for the Olympus 17 1.8 or the Panasonic Summilux 15 1.7.
In your case since size doesnt seem to matter that much, I would clearly advise you choosing the G85 based on mic-in, weather sealing and the flip out screen.

Yeah, but you shoot v-log right, probably to an external recorder? GH4 is a great camera for someone who knows how to use it. With my experience with both GH4/GH5 and GX85 I would recommend the G85 to a beginner, but GH4 is also a good choice. A lot's of people overdo the IBIS thing, but if you use it like @jonpais it's a very useful tool.
And I bet you haven't used the any of the new Panasonic cameras, am I right?
Yes, it is about easy. People shoot with expensive cameras because it's the easiest way to get the best image they can.
I also shoot full manual btw.

I shot another yoga video with and this time with a lavalier. The language might be a little strange to some but it works pretty good I think. I had to shoot with the GH3 as I sold my GH4 when I got the GX85. Didn't think we had to wait this long for the GH5...

I agree with what Geoff said. Otherwise it looks good I think. If you're gonna make more videos like this I would check out CodyApp for inspiration. Like this one for example: https://www.codyapp.com/plans/true-strength-evolution?ref=soh_fp_all_4
I actually made a few yoga videos too and will be making more in a couple of months. It's nice to see how others are doing it so thanks for sharing! My videos are a bit simpler and with music instead, but maybe it's helpful to see something different? Have a look if you want:

Color science...such a tired overused phrase...as tiresome as filmic actually....My preference in a camera is actually color fidelity...I don't want the camera to decide the image for me...I want the camera to reproduce the colors my eyes see...I'll change it to the look I want for whatever the occasion/reason...which is why I prefer Panasonic cameras...to my eye it produces what I see...not some fairytale version of what's there...and of course the other part that's most important to me....they work when you need them to...excuses about where cameras are today and what they can't do is just tiring and ridiculous....get a fucking hobby if any one of these cameras can't work for you!...

Nah, not that at all. There are just some truths in life... The Godfather is one of the best films ever made, Pizza is good, The Beatles are the best band ever, and Kholi's GH5 footage is the best GH5 footage posted thus far. Even if it isn't your cup of tea, you should be able to recognize these simple truths.

At the risk of sounding like a total dick here and I of all people have no right to, but I just don't get some people on this forum. I know most things are subjective, but that Kholi footage is probably the nicest GH5 footage I have seen and people complain about it?!

    "GH5 w V-Log
UHD out to BMD 4K ASSIST/ProRes HQ (Does not take the DCI 4K signal)
V-Log to Comet Color LUT (early early stages, converted from my B-Side LUT for Blackmagic's Ursa Mini 4.6K/Pro)
Sony Cinealta 4K 35 and 25mm (In that order) w/HotRod Cameras PL mount
    NiSi IR ND 1.8
Early thoughts: Reminds me of the A7SII, honestly. Not that far off, nearly same color and aesthetic, less rolling shutter of course. Pana may beat out the A7SII for base color, though.
Tell your favorite LUT builder to jump on building some, not a huge fan of what comes out of the camera stock. Alexa to Rec709 doesn't look bad as a starting point, still needs a fair amount of massaging IMO.
Don't have much time with it, going to mess with CineV and acquire some more V-Log footage to tune the Comet Color port."

It looks better on Chrome  A little more contrasty. Maybe that's the trick, go for the pale look and let Chrome take of the rest.
The most ridiculous part is that both Chrome and Youtube are Google companies. If anything they should be able to make it look better than Safari, not worse!

I highly doubt it. I think they're going to be releasing an update to the GX8, but there is no guarantee it will even have a headphone jack. I'm guessing it will be aimed towards photographers.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but no other Panasonic camera except the GH-line has ever had as high frame rates, bigger batteries, headphone jack, v-log L etc. Ergonomics is subjective, but I prefer the GH-line and GX8 over the smaller G85 and GX85.
The GH5 is meant to last for 3 years, why would they release a cheaper similar camera to compete with it? Maybe in a year or two we will see 4K 60p in a cheaper Panasonic camera.

I spoke to the store I ordered from in Norway last week and they told me I'm number 3 in line, but they only get 2 cameras in the first shipment. They expected to get the camera in the end of March, and I would probably get the camera in mid April. I ordered from one of the biggest stores in Norway on the same day the opened for pre-orders, so for those who waited a few days I guess it could take a while.

Idk, the problem with native lenses on micro 4/3 is they lack character. They are very sterile and perfect. This is fine if you enjoy that look. But with so much interest in the LUMIX line of cameras many videographers work ends up looking similar.
However, they are very light and small which is a bonus...
But the focus rings aren't that great for manual focus unless you are spending a ton of money... and some of them are more expensive than a used Zeiss Super Speed...
So, that only leads you with OIS and AF as a major benefit IMO.
Since AF is only really good for getting a quick initial focus, the native lenses lose another point in my opinion.
And now with IBIS, the OIS becomes irrelevant as well, so I am unsure if I see much benefit in spending all of this money to invest in a plastic lens that could be broken in a year or two.
Again just my opinion on a cold, Sunday afternoon. To each his own in the end.

I don't really understand why you ask me that question as I have never questioned it's capabilities. To answer the question you should however define what a filmmaker is first, but I'll give it try  I don't consider myself a filmmaker for instance, and there are reasons why I haven't bought the Sigma yet, even if it's fairly cheap. I would probably have come to the same conclusion as @jase if I bought one. The slightly/much? better performance just isn't worth it due to the size and weight. Didn't you also somewhat come to that conclusion?
I know it's a fantastic lens and I would probably bought it if I was making narratives, ads, etc on low budget for a living, but I'm not. I primarily make food videos and yoga videos for youtube with native lenses and even then I usually stop down to preferably f/2.5 or more to get what I want in focus. I only shoot on wider apertures if I don't have enough light, and when I do I usually regret it later (instead of pushing the ISO) because I wanted to have more of the subject in focus. A huge f/1.2 lens isn't going to make my videos any better, and if I would use the Sigma at f/3.5 the resolution/sharpness benefit wouldn't be big enough to justify it for me.
I'm totally with you that it's a great lens, but I don't think it's the best lens for everyone.
I would much rather have a kit with a nice slowish zoom (PL 12-60mm), and high quality primes for low light that I can carry everywhere and use for all of my projects; food, yoga, travel, stills, portraits, short films etc. When I started to do photography in 2012 I chose the m43 system exactly for that reason, it's not the best out there but it's the best allrounder in my opinion.

Looking forward to seeing you eat your vegetables @jonpais  Off course a f/2.8 - f/4.0 zoom lens can't compete with a f/1.8 in light gathering capabilities, but I bet it will be difficult to tell them apart at f/4.0 - f/5.6 mixed together in a youtube video. Honestly I think you would be able to make just as good videos with the PL 12-60mm and Oly 75mm (or even just the Oly 12-100m for that matter) as all your primes since you usually don't shoot wide open, but where's the fun in that  I could be wrong though, but I'm really looking forward to getting that new PL 12-60mm to replace my 12-35mm Fischer Price lens, which btw is a really good lens for what it is.
In my opinion the new breed of super fast lenses from Panny and Oly are best suited for still photographers who wants shallow DOF. It's just so difficult to get the focus right at f/1.2 / f/1.4 and if Shane Hurlbut's test is anything to go by they perform noticeably better when stopped down a little. I love my Nocticron lens and the PL 12mm, but in my experience getting the lighting, exposure, framing and WB right is far more important than having a better/faster/sharper lens. In other words, I more often let my gear down than otherwise.
I agree that the Fuji 90mm looks great (the 25mm too), but it is really better than the Oly 75mm? I don't know, maybe I need a bigger monitor than my 15" MBP mid 2014 to see it...
Really appreciate the tests though, keep em coming!

I'm 42. In high school computer classes involved typing and running some DOS program. I think I had my first legal drink before I ever sent an email. I remember the days when I would yell at my brother to get off the phone because I was hoping some girl was going to call... she never did. Lol. Well she probably did but gave up because of the busy signal. Hell I remember when call waiting was the newest technology that I had to explain to my parents when they kept asking why the phone kept beeping at them. Lol.

Thanks for all the posts asking me not to quit EOSHD.
It's been a long time running this blog by myself - 7 years now!
I am completely disillusioned with the industry, the direction it is headed in, the lack of creativity, the focus on pros, the lack of quality online rivals, the bitterness that exists in the blogging community and the amount of clickbate out there.
It's going to take a miracle for me to get my passion back.

    That article wasn't a review.
It was more of a news announcement and an opinion piece.
As far as EVFs go it's best in class. That is a fact! Nothing controversial about that.
Zacuto never gave me a loan unit. Count the number of Zacuto articles on EOSHD - what is it - something like 1 or 2 in 5 years.
    Hardly shill like behaviour.
And for internal recording I'd much prefer to use the Zacuto Eye on a small camera than a whopping big field monitor.
The SDI input isn't a problem. You can get tiny HDMI to SDI converters for $70.
    Blackmagic do one.
    https://www.bpm-media.de/Studiotechnik/Konverter/Mini-Konverter/HDMI-=/X/Blackmagic-Design-Micro-Converter-HDMI-to-SDI::372209.html?language=de&gclid=CLa706XAztICFQIL0wodRvkFEg
The irony is you critisise me for criticising C5D then call me a shill! But I'm willing to let it go as you were a great mod over at the Cinema 5D forums... You put a lot of passion into that place. Surely, were you not just a bit pissed off at Seb and Nino when they decided to offload the entire forum to Planet5D on the condition the idiot over there would monetise it?
That community sold into the gutter for a penny.
And I would never sell my members to anyone - they are not mine to sell.
Like I say, you can use the Zacuto Eye on DSLRs with a $70 HDMI -> SDI
I don't know why Seb thought he could trade people's forum activity for money... That's the crux of that little matter.
Yes I do have a chip on my shoulder but in this instance mainly because they slated the GH5 without understanding the technical reasons behind the macro blocking in 10bit.
Yet they are in direct contact with Panasonic about this and leading them down the garden path to announcements, firmware updates and god knows what else.
    Quality feedback is extremely important.
I advised Panasonic not to put a statement out about it because it would only draw attention to a negative from a flawed test, which basically claimed the GH5 was unusable for professional work, when the truth is the opposite and it is actually an incredible piece of engineering with a few normal compression artefacts in VLOG if you grade it wrong.
    Facts bro.
If you need the broader picture about my supposed 'chip on shoulder' then you need to consider the full history of what Cinema5D has done for the DSLR video community. Here's a brief outline -
    1. Nino and the other Seb plucked out of obscurity by Philip Bloom to intern on the infamous Red Tails shoot. Nino and Phil have remained friends
    2. The point being he did not get noticed out of the quality of his work, rather by association with who he knew.
    3. Cinema5D started with Jared Abrams in L.A. covering DSLR video, hence "5D" in the domain name
    4. Nino instigated the shift to professional cameras and a professional standpoint on everything, completely jettisoning the fun aspect and alienating enthusiasts, as well as damaging the democratic aspect of the whole community at that time. Meanwhile Jared was dumped out in the cold.
    5. Nino gives seminars and talks for money at trade shows every year and has been at almost every one I've ever been to in some kind of manufacturer or dealer sponsored capacity... BVE, Photokina, etc. Nothing wrong with making a living of course but to then turn around and claim you're giving unbiased advice on Cinema5D is a bit rich in my view. You can't do both.
    6. The forum was offloaded to Mitch at Planet5D, the most clickbate resource in the whole community, he of course made a huge fuck up and it haemorrhaged users. Seb I believe did this because he couldn't be bothered to maintain it despite the fact he had a team of mods to help him, and he wanted to off load it for cash. Disgusting.
    7. The general content there is just so bland. Yet because of all their manufacturer associations it floats the public's attention like sponsored content.
    8. Even during the years when we were on good terms, in the past Cinema5D rarely if ever mentioned my articles in their coverage... mean spirited.
    9. Rather they saw me as a bitter rival to be crushed.
    10. Way before my first ever article criticising their actions, they have been extremely rude to me behind closed doors... dismissive and argumentative.
