  1. hi guys, thanks for the appreciations. The settings are pretty step forward. Normal profile pic, sharpness -7, contrast -1 and master blacks around +8.  And grading was done in Final Cut Pro using its newest grading tool, manual corrected, no LUT used. That's about it.

Was five years ago, I'm sure it has changed.

i have read the interview and he's certainly talking about the stills series, not the footage. So 7D and 50mm 1.2 is for the photography series.

given the clarity and look i would guess that fb clip isnt from a dslr – maybe one of the mirrorless cams, but id say CX00 if i had to guess

but COULD you use a dslr for a piece like this? OF COURSE!

if ive learned anything about filmmaking, its that NO ONE CARES about stuff like that but us

theres never been anything shot on a dslr that was unsuccessful BECAUSE it was shot on an dslr

so im just sayin... dont let the gear be a barrier between you and making great content. only nerds like us notice that stuff lol

while some people are sitting on the couch wishing for a camera that costs as much as a new car, others are making films with what they have, and getting their work seen by the whole world online

i want UTA to represent me as a commercial filmmaker and fine artist. do you think those folks have ever passed around something really great, and then it gets to the big boss, and hes like "Its good but the highlights clip like shit" looool me neither thats a funny idea tho

I know what you're saying and i couldn't agree more. That's one of the reasons i am refuse to upgrade my NX1 for a couple of years now. It's just that i like the look so much, it feels organic and it's the kind of look that i wish a mirrorless would give yet, but i am afraid it's not happening. Looking at the slow motion quality and the full frame aspect of the image i can't think of a mirrorless that has that quality in slow motion - just one of the features i have noticed.

  3. Silly question here but am going to ask anyway. Sorry for wasting your time guys. I am wondering what gear are the guys using to shoot humans of New York mini documentaries for Facebook?

Could they use a dslr or is it a proper video camera like baby alexa or something similar?

    thx

Apart from the fact that the A7s still has significant advantages in 2 important areas - sensor size and low light / high ISO performance. An A7sIII with an internal UHD 4.2.2 10bit codec may just be the 'giant killer' that everyone wants but which Sony thinks will kill sales of their higher end cameras and therefore not be commercially acceptable.

this topic was already covered many times on this forum. I have to agree to the fact that the professionals who are shooting on fs7 are choosing it for the right reasons. Like build in ND, body type and ergonomy, and so on. And vice versa, who's choosing to shoot on a7s will do it especially for "the right tool for the right job" reason.

It's not like sony can hold back the features forever just not to cut into fs7 sales. I think that would be the wrong approach. Just saying.

  5. :( wonder what's the marketing strategy for sony! They have gh5 in the market for a while now eating from a7s pie bits by bits. They have fs5, fs7 and they just announce the sony venice and YET at NAB they announce once again a video NON Dslr camera. Why, like why??? when people are expecting an a7s mark3 with 10 bits and decent codec. that's all we ask for. Would be the perfect indie camera for a long time ahead.

    Just saying out loud.

  6. more or less 10 bits is mandatory since this is the standard impose by the cheaper gh5 already. I wouldn't see sony going for less than that.

The only question is when? people are already switching to panasonic for this very specific reason, the strong codec 400 all-i and 10 bits -  the clock is ticking.

  7. true, 10 bits 422 internal codec and maybe 10 bits 4k 60p would be amazing on a full frame sensor with less rolling shutter and same low light capability.

This would make the a7s mark3 almost the perfect indie camera. The big question is: when it will be release? when? if it's fall 2018 could be a little too late, just saying.

  8. Hey, someone put some effort into creating a petition for keeping NX line alive.

He even got an answer from Samsung Korea Ceo in which was requested for a better number of people to sign the petition. BUt overall the feedback was positive. If we can show Samsung that we are many, if we all stay together, maybe we'll have a chance if not for a NX2 at least for some new updates for NX1.

Let's take a bit of time and sign the petition. It only takes 2 min.

    Thanks

Not really, some of us with full Sony gear and lens dumped to get GH5, though some just use the same lens on GH5 using adapter, if you do medium to high budget video instead of ultra low budget each time it is really not that hard to be honest

It's business and for PROFIT for some us and not just a hobby.

i get your point. Still, the gap between gh5 and a7s 2 is really small. Is hard to pick one. is basically better low light and sensor size vs better slow motion 4k60p and better codec, better colors, better lens range, better ergonomics, and so on. Anyways, at the end of the day i thing it comes down to different tools for different projects. It's just in my heart i am still waiting for the perfect tool which will be a7s mark3 with the feature that gh5 has but with a full frame codec. have to wait an other year probably.

  10. if a7s 3 comes a year from now than it's really hard to resist the gh5 with the new upcoming firmware. And in terms of business, if people are choosing to make the switch rather than wait for the sony to catch up, it hard to justify the switch again after just one year when you already invested in lenses. Just saying.

I would say if you want a A7s3 then just wait for it...you are offering both sides of the decision as to why or why not you should buy the GH5...just use your NX1 until you can get the Sony...how can any other member know, whether you should buy a GH5 or not...I bought one, and will certainly get another body...your needs will of course differ from mine!...your choice to make though.

you're right. was a silly question after all. What i was asking in my stupidity is : if gh5 is really an upgrade from samsung nx1 or not? image quality wise!

  12. in Romania is not so easy to buy cameras and send them back if you're not happy. We're just not there yet. And renting could be an option. I tried one over a weekend but couldn't decide :( I  mean, the codec is really way better, it supports more post production. But i didn't have the lenses to really try it well so i don't know if the sensor is such a problem. For me a real upgrade would be a sony a7s3 with 10 bits and 4k 60p and the full frame sensor which probably will exist at some point but i won't have the budget for it. I asked for help, not to be silly, but maybe someone had the same problem and has an answer. Someone who had samsung nx1 and upgraded to gh5 and is will to share the ups and downs. Thank you anyway.

Or better still, sell it on to me for a discount ;)

The fundamental problem you have really is what to do with the NX1 rather than should you trade it for a GH5.

It has still got a decent value because of how good it is but even amongst those who know that, its undeniable that its probably reached peak value. Every day that passes is going to diminish that further because people will be less and less inclined to buy into what isn't just a discontinued camera but a dead system. It's a real shame because it is a great piece of kit that will probably be churning out great images for years to come but as a secondhand proposition no one will fancy being the one left holding the baby when it does give up.

What hasn't helped that is just how good the GH5 is turning out to be. I suspect there are a number of people even on here who might have been thinking about taking a chance on picking up a used NX1 who have since succumbed to the charms of the GH5. As it is almost certainly only be video shooters (and only a niche of those) who would be after an NX1 now then that is your target market for selling it to dwindling further on a daily basis.

So I suppose the proposition you have now is to choose to keep the NX1 and keep enjoying it until it dies or cash out while you can before it becomes almost worthless.

In that sense, its not the NX1 vs the GH5 you have to decide between but its actually the NX1 vs the NX1.

If you do decide to cash out then its just a question of putting it into the best camera you can get for that money, which the GH5 is certainly looking to be.

If you are intent on holding out for the Sony then at least you'll have your NX1 invested in something who's value is diminishing slower.

you set the problem right. I really love my nx1 but it starts to draw me back with it limitations. Which are slow motion only available in 1080p and the quality is not up to the 4k resolution. And mostly the low light limitation, where 800 iso on nx1 is already a bit noisy compared to gh5 which is really noise free till 1600. Also the motion cadence and the in body stabilization are other strengths that i am missing on nx1. On the other hand the stills are at a different level on samsung nx1 and the bigger sensor helps a lot when you pair it to pro lenses which i already have. Tough decision.

And it is not about money as i paid really less for nx1, i would pay more for gh5. SO i don't see it as a trade. If i could wait and save for the A7s3 i would be the happiest person alive. BUt i am sure i wont have the budget for the body plus 2, 3 lenses,  (probably around 6k altogether)
