Indeed.  And after all, if you really wanted to, you can make footage from an actual film camera look like video with a few tricks.  And you can go the other direction with an electronic camera.
If getting the closest right out of the cam is the biggest issue though, then it seems to me the BM cameras offer that.
I still stick by my point though.  If you apply skill to your shooting and post that's how you make digital look like film.  The camera body is a factor, but a much smaller one than a lot of people tend to think it is.  Of course, learning applied craft is harder than buying stuff, so...
    Round and round.

My biggest peeve with this sort of question (and it's a legitimate question, I'm not bashing the OP) is the phrase "filmic."  You can make just about any camera look "videoish" or look "filmic."  It's not really the camera that does it.
You see my little user icon there?  It's a GM1 with a old Pentax a110 25mm lens on it.  I shot a short film on it.  In a film festival in which it was screened a lot of the positive comments were how the short looked very "filmic" compared to other entires.  I did a pretty aggressive color grade too.  (considering how flimsy the narrative was, the aesthetics were the only positive reviews I got!)
The other cameras used in the same screening block were the Canon 1Dc, a RED, and a  FS100.  All great cameras.
Point is, it's what you do with your camera and how you apply your knowledge, skills, and craft (aka: how it's lit) that ultimately makes the difference.  You can't just buy a piece of gear and think "okay, that tick box is checked, my stuff will look like a movie now."
That said, BM.  Best dynamic range.  DOF is over rated and over used nowadays.

Hi guys i guess i should start from here,

I am getting people from the NY area asking to video their weddings, i am located in Europe,Athens Gr so they will pay my air tickets, but i cant bring another videographer from europe as the cost is too high.

i usually shoot with 2-3 shooters

i am looking for a pro-semipro videographer that is local to New York to shoot second camera, documentary style HD, preferably with a ful frame canon camera and standard lenses to match my style.

i know its not the most glamorous job for many, but we usually have a good time with my fellow shooters :)

    now for the bashing

    1. put your best shots at the first minute of the clip (04:06 for example)
    2. make a shorter version 2  minutes
    3. i dont like the people talking, i would omit them (or just keep their voices without their faces, to put what goes on and shorten it)
    4. music is good at the beginning but then its too melancholic, (for commercial reasons it needs to get more upbeat)
    5. i know you are in the UK, put more sunlight in (some golden hour shots in there) its very blue, and cold tones tend to make us pull away again im talking business!

For me it has to be upgrading my cameras. I got a BMPCC for £366 in the summer sale and a GH4 for £899 on black friday weekend. Together that's the same amount of money I paid for my D5300 and G6 a year ago. But I've moved from two excellent enthusiast hybrid cameras to two professional video cameras. It really has been a big and worthwhile leap for me - not least because I'm done buying and researching cameras for at least a couple of years now. I'm going to focus completely on making actual films for people other than fellow camera boffins. That's the big moment for me.
Merry christmas and a happy new year everyone! I hope 2015 brings good filmmaking to you all!

When I'm here on this site I feel I'm more akin to the self-proclaimed coffee shop "author" that talks more about his typewriter than the stories he should be composing.

What do you do to get motivated and create?

I'm wrapped up in some ennui over here.

Too much endless corporate work perhaps?  Not sure.  Making a living, but yearning for something more, so there's a lot of wandering aimlessly around the web.

Basically, as a filmmaker, it's hard to feel productive visiting tech blogs like EOSHD...and for some reason it's a way too common destination/distraction.  Curious that, for lots of reasons.

It's great for some simple advice, but honestly there's not a ton of actual filmmaking discussion going on.  I think my gear-porn tendencies are a huge liability as an actual creative.

Augh, how to get off one's ass and get something worthwhile made?

The best way to learn filmmaking is to watch and observe films, develop a taste, then experiment and eventually arrive at your own techniques. It worked for Quentin Tarantino, and it will work for you.

Nowadays, most people have nothing to say, but they'll say it anyway. I think, I know, I believe...
Tarkovsky, Fellini, Godard, Bergman, were readers, first. So go to the library, borrow books -plays, classic novels, philosophy- and only then, you might have a chance, one day, to write something which will have a somewhat universal artistic value worth sharing with fellowmen who can really appreciate a deep, thorough, moving piece of story telling.

Of course it is, no argument there. The learning part works for me, too. But at least to me consumerism is not the same as GAS, and vice versa. To me consumerism is the kind of "shopping is a feeling" attitude and behaviour. Shopping for the sake of shopping, whereas GAS is something different, the urge to get a newer, better tool we want and sometimes even need to do what we do, even though not having one right now wouldn't kill us.
I for one will openly admit that GAS did have a small part in my buying a BMPCC, along with those four or other somewhat similar reasons. That's why I added the fifth reason in that list. It's as much an edited list for myself, as it was a friendly pun towards you. I think it's quite healthy not to take ourselves too seriously all the time.

GAS aside, I don't regret getting the damn thing. The only thing I sort of regret is rushing to buy the cheaper LCDF loupe for it instead of waiting for the pricier Zacuto loupe. Only because the cheaper loupe was available immediately, and the Zacuto wasn't.  The price difference was significant, but not critical.

I actually like the simplicity of the camera, along with the 10-bit 422 ProRes HQ it delivers as default. The two major things I don't like too much is the quality of the lcd screen and the structure of the settings menu. There should be better shortcuts for some settings and functions. I wish it had better battery life and built in ND filters, too, but one can't have everything in such a small package, for such a price. Now I just wish I had more time and opportunities to play with it. This fall has been a bit of a disappointment, in many ways.

I received my BM Pocket last week (after buying it in the summer sale and waiting aaaagggges for it).

Anyway, I haven't had much time to play with it so this is my first attempt (RAW and ProRes 422 mix):

Graded in FCPX (Resolve to convert the RAW)

I love the camera already. The image is just so rich and full and happy to be pushed around. The moire bothers me a fair bit, but it's not a deal breaker.

nvldk reacted to utsira in Suggestion: "screening room" as a sticky thread instead of a subforum?
Posts in the subforums just don't seem to get anywhere near the number of eyeballs that topics in the main forum do. It's a shame, there's some great stuff in the screening room sub-forum. I think the issue is it's just too diffuse, with each video in its own thread (and sometimes, if people haven't embedded it properly, it's another click away), plus some things are in the GH4 or ML specific threads. I can see the point of gear-specific threads, but I don't just want to see stuff shot on the same cameras that I have, and I don't think its healthy to have a gear conformity attitude (remember Kendy Ty!)

I think screening room would work really well as a long single thread. It would be a one-stop site where you could see what people on the forum are up to and get some inspiration (or, if you're watching one of my contributions, look at an urban cityscape you've seen in countless other videos cut to a hip soundtrack with some speed ramping and a LUT or two. Yeah I know my limits)

Like I said, I couldn't find any samples, so I figured I'd put something up.  I wish I could have shot some people.  If I did, at a low f-shop, you would have seen shallow DOF that would would show the huge benefit over a gopro, in separating subject from background.

The a7S is full-frame, and has larger pixels.   The RED has monster processing chips, batteries and I assume sensor heatsinks.  So let me clarify what I was saying, I don't see consumer APS-C sensors getting much better at video.  The power/heat that would be generated in properly binning all the pixels is too great.   Sensors are only part of the equation.

You're right, I should have clarified.

Well, I found that shooting digital is tiring for me. And that characteristic isn't minor but major to me!

I admit, that for example BMPCC is great. The RAW image looks great. But it's way to clinical! Sterile. Yes, its matter of tase, and I love the filmistock imperfection. Thats something digital will never have! It's too good. And it's funny how many videos around try to fake the imperfection and film look.

Probably digital is already superior to film quality wise but... there is so much more about film:
Well stored film lasts for your whole lifetime and can ever be reproduced (also with a device built of LEGO :) )
Shooting film is totally different as you have to think twice. David Lynch pointed out that actors seem to work more determined/concentratde when shot on film
For my latest Super-8 project I shot 10minutes of footage which cost me more than €250,- So this is something worthy and that makes it special. When I capture video it is always too much. I am tired of watching hours of rubbish. For some reason film is more artistic for me. I also like to cut with scissors and project film (just watched a great documentary from 1971 - even my 18 year old son was impressed).

The most important thing is maybe that my brain is analogue and analogue is more pleasing to me. I also prefer records instead of CDs :)

Regarding the above mentioned new camera - There is such thing: It is called "Logmar" and produces stunning images with Super-8.
This looks absolutely like 16mm when you choose some of the new negative stock. And there is no (NO!) flicker at all  :o

But sometimes I also like digital and it is fine for me but at least I have to use some less sharp lenses and some anamorphic glass to reduce the cold clinical sharpness.
Just a matter of taste  :)

Both include adapters for Pentax110 to M4/3, one with adjustable aperture (which cost me $50).

Fixed lens and only still images. If this would do 1080p 24/25 fps it would be a game changer for video for sure! Pulling focus in post... Would be amazing! For stills it's still a gimmick IMO. Fun to embed those interactive iframes where you can change the focus, but what is the real use of that?

It's a big step up from the first version indeed. Might be very interesting for cinematography if this develops more.

You can set the shutter release button to start/stop record when in movie mode (it may even be like that by default - can't remember).

I went through the need for wide-angle scenario recently with my G6 (having old Nikon primes down to 24mm). The Lumix 14mm f2.8 is your cheapest, smallest decent option. It's sharp, fast and I gives a pretty good image. I sold mine recently because I bought a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 to use with my D5300 (all my glass is now Nikon mount). It's more expensive and about 30 times larger/heavier than the 14mm, but I much prefer the image and it will mount to any future camera I buy.

Don't write off the 14-42 kit lens either - it's pretty decent, though not very fast.
