Shield3 got a reaction from IronFilm in samsung nx1 new firmware 1.40
Just updated my body today and shot a good deal with it tonight.  Everything seems fine.
Increased continuous maximum shot counts    - 15fps JPEG : 70ea → 90ea    - 15fps RAW  : 20ea → 25ea Added Video DIS (except 120p, VGA size video) Added AEL at M mode,  ISO Auto setting   - This is a big one for me...finally! Added Focus Peaking menu in button setting menu Improved AF to work during zooming     (6 Supporting Lens : 16-50mm S, 50-150mm S, 16-50mm PZ, 18-55mm Ⅲ, 12-24mm, 50-200mm Ⅲ)     ※ Please updated Lens together with Latest version        Lens Firmware can be updated by iLauncher Add Flash Exposure info. display on Live view Live view (when Flash is ON) Improved battery display to show both internal & external remains together when vertical grip is mounted Improved Playback speed of photo Improved sound quality of external Mic. (only for Auto MIC Control OFF) Overall fixed minor bugs Of note from my experiences tonight - I had the DIS enabled just for the hell of it - turning this ON will make 1080p120 unavailable in the video menu.  Took me a minute to figure this out as I was shooting with a dumb adapter + Canon EF glass.

i downloaded your clip –– an astounding amount of true detail and rich color
pulled the frame grab into photoshop to add a bit of magenta and yellow in the color balance..... wow at those canon skintones i gotta say. if i can ever get slog2 to do this ima start a blog lol
the subtle modulation in the faces of the five children closest to the camera definitely reminds me of canon raw.... amazing

Well gosh thanks a lot.  I thought I would get ridiculed off the boards for shooting family videos with a 1dc.  I'm just trying to get the best footage of my kids while they're young that I can afford.  I shot the 5d3 raw for almost 2 years - I'd have stayed with it but I wanted the ability to crop with 4k plus the 12 FPS for sports.  Plus of course the non-hacked reliability.

I'll probably just get depressed if I download the footage (compared to the stuff I can produce), but even the framegrab is very impressive. I have started using the  4k photo mode on the panasonic lx100 a bit, and while it is impressively good as well, it doesn't look as good as this...

After shooting the NX1 for a while and shooting a bunch yesterday with the 1dc, I would describe it best as high resolution 5d3 raw quality, without any quirks.  The footage is just magic.  I realize there are cameras out there with better options on paper, and while I love my NX1 for 120fps 1080 and casual shooting, the 1dc paired with the 16-35 F/4 IS is really an unbeatable combination.  Just stunning footage.
It's enough that I may not even look for anything else to shoot with for quite a while.
No idea why I'm posting this.  Just inspired.
    Shawn
And I'm not even shooting C-log.  Just regular standard profile with the contrast, sharpness and saturation knocked down.  I don't even add sharpness in post (0 in camera) with this 16-35 @ F/8.  It's just really sharp 4k.

I vote for the NX1 - largest sensor of the 3, and much easier to get wide and shallow DOF.  The 1080p120 looks fantastic.  Is it perfect?  No, of course not, but IMO the best of these three.  The RX100v4 won't shoot slowmo or 4k for very long takes, and the 96FPS of the GH4 is pretty low-res.  All 3 are good choices IMO.

This.  I had a strong hunch it'd overheat.  My RX100 overheated, my NEX 5n, NEX-7, etc.  I remember 4 years ago going to Florida with the 5n - in 93 degree temps it would only shoot about a minute of video.  Lost some precious footage / shooting opportunities of my kids.  Yes I'm still bitter, and yes, reliability trumps all.

Huh?  Nearly 2?  I thought all the FE adapters were 1 stop, and only the Micro four thirds had an extreme speedbooster.  I've been known to be wrong though as I HATE HATE HATE using adapters.

    This is for the micro 4/3rds - http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPEF-m43-BT3 - 1 1/3 stop.

After staying up half the night (and working 13 hours yesterday) I ended up getting a used NX1 + grip + 16-50 F/2-2.8.
I love my 1dc, but this will be more for casual shooting.  It does things the 1dc doesn't, like:
Built in EVF / touch screen / 120FPS @ 1080p / AF in video mode - even high speed AF!  The gh4 doesn't even do that.  My wallet wishes I'd never have watched this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DigAgYD-QY
While on paper the Sony looks amazing - I pulled down a few videos for both this and the RX10 II - I just didn't care for the image on the Sony.  With the small sensor it just looks to camcorder-like.  Yes, I know you can get close to the subject and zoom out and get nice shallow DOF - but look at that video I just posted - that's @ 45mm.  I think the REC 709 coming out of the NX1 will be just fine - I'll dial down the contrast/saturation a bit.  It will be a pain transcoding the h265, but that's why we have beefy machines, right?
I love how small the Rx100 IV is, but the overheating reports scare me.  My original RX100 would overheat and shut off during baseball games.  So did my NEX-5n and many other Sonys.  While it's true for flat out detail and sharpness the new RX models are probably the best, I much prefer the look of the larger sensor NX1 so that's what I bought.
I think the 1080p/120 from the NX1 looks pretty damn fantastic.  Plus it will hold the AF.  Think about that.  I shoot my son playing travel baseball - now I can shoot slo-mo him hitting and running through all the bases - that's far too tough to pull focus on with any sort of shallow DOF with the 1dc.  This 1080p120 looks far better than the 1080p60 I'm getting from the 1dc.  You know that as well as I do.  Don't know about you Andrew, but all the sample videos I've seen from the 1" sensor'd new Sonys look like camcorder footage.  I don't want anything that sharp at 4k.

Ha. This was the number 1 trigger which made me think "sod this", get a 1D C. The A7S being such a TINY camera, to bolt on a massive recorder which an invisible screen in direct light was just horrible. The 1D C is small but it also self contained and 'just works' unlike 5D3 raw or recorders that exhaust huge bulky batteries in 30 mins. I like simplicity!!

I just bought this camera used with 33k clicks and 2 OEM batteries for $4300 USD.  It won't be here until next week - was hoping if anyone has a link to downloadable 4096x2180 "straight out of the camera" footage I'd appreciate it.
Bloom had some on his site, as well as Planet 5d, but the links have long been removed.  Figures once the camera hits my affordability all the links are gone!

Yes, I've been searching Google and this site for about 1/2 hour.  Tough to find footage that is untouched straight out of the camera.

Shield3 reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon 1D C used price slips under £5000 - and why I decided to take the gamble and get one
I'll do a detailed image comparison between the 1D C and A7S soon on EOSHD so look out for that.
Even after owning the 1D C I can't argue with some of the ways the A7S is superior, but most of those relate to it as a 1080p camera.
When you rig it up with an external recorder for 4K it becomes something rather different ergonomically. It isn't a small mirrorless camera with EVF any more. In fact you can't use the EVF at all whilst it is outputting 4K. It just didn't deliver what I needed. The screen visibility and battery life of the Shogun became a pretty big issue for me, whilst as a 1080p camera I had neither problem, at least with the battery grip and a few spares!
So here I was in a predicament. The Shogun on the one hand was a fantastic piece of technology and I'm going to get some more use out of it for sure, once I solve the issue of seeing the screen outdoors and powering it properly, and the ergonomics of rigging it to such small cameras.
But the main predicament was that although I had quite a few beautiful images coming out of the various cameras I owned, they all had practical flaws.
I wanted the colour, dynamic range and full frame loveliness I was getting with Magic Lantern raw video on the 5D Mark III, but the file sizes were even larger than the 1D C for plain old 1080p. Reliability also an issue, I found the 1000x komputerbay cards kept going through slow phases (possibly due to file system fragmentation) and especially at higher ISOs the recording would keep stopping. The problem with 1080p is it isn't a future proof format. It will be consigned to the dustbin. Not like Super 8 or 16mm or film which creep back over time for their artistic qualities. 1080p will just go to the grave I feel, like 720 and SD. If it comes back as a retro format it will have a particular look like VHS in the future and so be very niche, not like super 16mm film which is more flexible in the way it looks, so can be used for a broad range of filmmaking even in 2015.
The NX1 and GH4 shoot 4K internally but their images are a little too compressed. The NX1 holds onto a lot of fine detail but doesn't have a grain character to speak of in plain shaded areas. However the image isn't so much the issue - it is the lack of active Canon EF adapter to NX mount and the lack of low light performance once you get past ISO 1600. I will still be using my NX1 when I need the smallest file sizes and super 35mm sensor in good light, and the upcoming firmware will be very interesting. Good b-cam. As is the GH4, will be keeping that, just not for low light!
The A7S ticked the most boxes overall, great in low light, S-LOG with minimal banding, but the need to shoot at ISO 3200 in bright light using strong filtration, the need to add a lens adapter for Canon EF lenses that still doesn't always work right, the need to add the recorder for 4K on a wobbly HDMI cable... all this weigh heavily against it for my purposes.
So to the 1D C, now at around the same price I can sell my GH4, 5D Mk III, 5D Mk II and 7D for which effectively it replaces (although I'll definitely keep the GH4 anyway) it solves a number of problems. First it replaces the 5D Mark III as a stills camera so I can finally get rid of it. It shoots 4K internally and is weather sealed. It has a native mount compatible with my best glass. It works well with the IS on my Canon lenses and no bugs. It is ultra reliable. The image maintains a fine noise grain. It is capable of matching or maybe even exceeding the dynamic range I had from S-LOG2 on the A7S and ML raw on the 5D3. It has colour which is easier to get right from the flat profile (Canon LOG) much like the D750, so takes less work to grade. It especially has better colour in the standard rec.709 picture profiles. It has less moire and aliasing in 4K than the A7S to external recorder, possibly due to stronger OLPF. Yet it resolves the same amount of actual real detail minus the false detail and 4K is enough detail to last me almost forever anyway. It lacks the niceties of the mirrorless cameras though but makes up for it with heft and build quality. No EVF but I've added one without radically changing the form factor or adding too much unbalanced weight. No peaking or focus assists whilst recording but again that is solved by adding the EVF. No mirrorless mount so I can't use my Cooke PLs but these don't cover full frame anyway (so corners would likely be soft in 1.3x). I will use my NX1 for those. Very good internal 1080p in Super 35mm mode and to Ninja Star, but the full frame 1080p isn't as good as the full frame 1080p from the A7S. Those are the things I miss and the banding can rear up sometimes especially at low ISOs in C-LOG but generally I feel there's some logic behind it now at £5k, whereas there wasn't before with so many promising other cameras that I thought would supersede it. They haven't. And the main logic failing of the 1D C was always the price not the image, and the fact they didn't add enough video bells & whistles.
