Julian reacted to Bioskop.Inc in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
Bm's shuttle will probably get an upgrade of some sort, it would be stupid not to supply something like Ninja2 in the near future - its not like they've given us recordable HDMI out for nothing.
They must have a long term plan, which will mean delivering a complete affordable workflow package that will cover the whole production process. And as you said, the BMPCC is the starter option that will get people to think about getting ready for future[proofing] a RAW workflow.
I'll start with SD cards & ProRes - hopefully 45mb/s will be fast enough & there's always deals on Amazon etc...to get you through the door. My only Sandisk Extreme Pro is out of date already, as they have doubled in speed since i got mine - they'll get faster & cheaper.
As far as lenses are concerned, i always shoot anamorphic & have never used a 35mm taking lens thus far (50-85mm are my favourites) so i won't have to buy much - i don't/won't buy lenses to fit a specific camera (its a future proofing investment thing). Also, i'm using a cropped sensor anyway, so i'm used to every focal length being longer & it hasn't been a problem - just move back a bit, take your time & think about/plan your shots more (should be doing the latter anyway, as its not only about how the shot looks, but how it works overall to your piece).
It's going to be fun & exciting - fingers crossed!

Julian got a reaction from P337 in Digital S16 marketing, Black Magic vs. Digital Bolex
Digital Bolex is $3299 retail... For me, that's not a comparison at all. I never considered the Bolex because of the price. I pre-ordered the Pocket Camera as fast as I could. It's quite a difference.
If price doesn't matter, I hope the Bolex offers more than the BMPCC and I guess it does. Anamorphic 4:3 mode, XLR, etc.
I think the Bolex is more for filmmakers who want that S16 look. The BMPCC is for everyone who wants great quality at a low price. The small sensor is just a consequence.

Julian got a reaction from mtheory in BMPC 4K greenscreen "should" be keyable?
The exact cropfactor is 1.70x.
(If the sensor size is 21.12mm x 11.88mm, the diagonal is 24,23mm. The diagonal of 16:9 fullframe is 41,3mm.
ivide 24,23mm by 41,3mm).
So it sits in between the GH2, the F5 and canon aps-c (roughly 1.6x, Nikon is 1.5x).
Panasonic GH3: 2x
Panasonic GH2: 1.86x
BMCC 4K: 1.70x
Sony F5: 1.59x

Julian reacted to Andrew Reid in Digital S16 marketing, Black Magic vs. Digital Bolex
That said I do have sympathy with early customers.
Blackmagic and Digital Bolex are putting them through some real misery.
If you funded the DB Kickstarter to the tune of a camera and if you pre-ordered the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at the last NAB, and haven't shot with either yet, just be safe in the knowledge that you're supporting the revolution if not actually able to televise it!

Julian got a reaction from dahlfors in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
On the Pocket Camera you won't get any vignetting with DX/EF lenses. With the Speed Booster the crop factor will be 2.1x, still more than aps-c 1.5/1.6x. On the S35 camera you won't be able to use a Speed Booster at all, because it has a EF mount.

As far as im concerned, The digital bolex folks have no room to talk until they actually release a camera. -
Julian reacted to mtheory in Is this the Blackmagic 4K sensor? Same supplier as Leica M CMOS
Yes. Get ready for 4K cats in shallow DOF.

andrew!
you can`t put "mass production" and "leica m" in the same line!!
that`s a bit like "chuck norris" and "nobel prize" in one sentence.... :-)

This is soooo sexy.
Add a pistol grip, add a lcd loupe, and done! (and I will add my tine petit cinevision anamorphic.. :))

Update on the contradicting interview from NAB:
Black Magic representant tells that the pocket camera will have compressed DNG, so now it's confirmed both from homepage and NAB representants:
https://vimeo.com/63690222
(also confirmed that the 4k camera reads out the full s35 sensor for 1080p, not just a crop mode)

Julian reacted to P337 in More details on global shutter and possible Blackmagic sensor supplier CMOSIS
Andrew shutup! Canon, Sony and RED might buy up all the sensors or try to shut CMOSIS down to delay my camera! lol
But seriously, thanks a lot for this, I hope you're right.
And thanks Julian, your post convinced me to pull the tigger on the pocket pre-order, if there is even a chance it has this sensor I want it.

Hmmm...
Kinda looks like this:

http://ccdcmos.com/products/cameras/scientific/CIS1021-sCMOS.htm
Based on the CIS2051 (which is 5,5 megapixel, so could be the BMCC sensor?)
Google CIS1021:
Found a 42 page pdf about it: http://alliedscientificpro.com/wp-content/uploads/MAN-0103-CIS1021-Datasheet_RevA.pdf
What do you think?

Julian got a reaction from nahua in Live coverage - Blackmagic Production Camera 4K and Pocket Cinema Camera
This might pose quite a thread to Panasonic. The whole GH-crowd who uses the Panasonics solely for video is probably switching over to the BMPCC right now. I just did ;)

Julian reacted to richg101 in Some words from Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty on the new cameras
I had been hankering for an Ikonoskop, but put a deposit down on the pocket cinema camera as soon as I was told it was on CVP. #4 on the CVP waiting list! Whoop!

Julian reacted to Shane Essary in Live coverage - Blackmagic Production Camera 4K and Pocket Cinema Camera
obligatory: shit, I think I just came.
Man, this is exactly what I was bitching about to my friend the other day. There's a ton of great old cinema lenses out there being under-utilized and with the kinda crappy, but handy ETC mode on the GH2, really, who's using them besides those Pentax Q Mount guys? Anyway, I've been picking them up with the idea that I'd eventually try to pick up a flea and mate it to a thinkpad tablet in some kind of frankenrig somehow, but .. screw that, I'll just sell my gh2 and buy this if they can deliver. I'm assuming that based on that sensor coverage spreadsheet that the majority of the 16mm film lenses will work well on this, without vignetting, with full resolution so we get all the nice anti-moire/anti-aliasing processing (or not, I dunno). Take THAT ikonoscop! :D

This is the next big thing since the 5D2.
An incredible cool camera for enthusiasts like me. The Speed Booster made me drool and i'm still waiting to hit that order button for the MFT version.
This little BMPCC + Speed Booster is what I'm aiming for. Freaking amazing.

Julian reacted to TC in New Blackmagic Camera
Let us not forget Canon have only just released the 1D C. It is not as if it is an old camera. And they want to charge a $6k premium for basically a firmware upgrade to shoot crappy MJPEG 4k, with no other video features. I hope I never have to give that loathsome, corrupt company any of my hard earned money again.

Julian reacted to jgharding in New Blackmagic Camera
I preordered the S35 one at CVP. Having seen how long it took people to get theirs, I figure it's best to stick the order in and just cancel if I change my mind! You have about a year-long cooling off period ;)
