I'm liking these 5DmkII clips better than most of the 5DmkIII clips.  Maybe Andrew's right though and it's not that the camera is better it's just that these folks are better at grading than your average 5DmkIII owner.

I traded my old 5D in for a 50D and cash.

Got raw recording working. Tested with Sandisk 32GB 95MB/s CF.
1592 is the max width. Max reliable speed seems to be 50MB/s for me with this card.

    Results (24 fps):

    1592x1062 - frame skipping after about 50 frames (67.7MB/s)
    1592x840 - frame skipping after about 480 frames (53.5MB/s)
    1592x720 - no frame skipping (44.3MB/s)

    1320x1062 - frame skipping after about 300 frames (56.1MB/s)
    1320x960 - frame skipping after about 1200 frames (50.7MB/s)
    1320x840 - no frame skipping (44.3MB/s)

    1280x1062 - frame skipping after about 250 frames (54.4 MB/s)
    1280x960 - no frame skipping (49.2MB/s)

Yes. That is a 5 year old dslr, worth about €300 (probably more soon, get one while you can!) shooting raw video without problems in a lovely 1280x960 ratio for 2x anamorphic

Will keep you guys updated about the quality, moire etc.

Everything changes so fast now, and I'm starting to know so many people who own better kit than me, I think I may cancel my BMD preorder and just start borrowing gear again (aside from my lenses). It's getting hard to keep up...

Here is a more human subject oriented test I shot with a friend yesterday.  Really cinematic image.  We tried to shoot in a more short film like style/setup.

I think we need to get off the whole PB thing. He's reaction was measured, and not really that controversial. His aversion to raw on the 5d3 is the same as it was for the BMCC, so he's been pretty consistent about the raw revolution (unlike some of the people criticizing him).

He thinks it's great for the image, but huge a pain in the ass for the workflow, and that's unsurprising given the volume of footage he shoots.

Amro Why did you write that? Seems like a waste of good internet space if you ask me. Everyone has an agenda of some kind. Andrew competes with Blooms site. So what We all have our favourites and vested interests. Where the conflict arises is when somebody is deceptive or when you get gurus who act like gods and trash the truth. There are websites who want you to praise the cameras their sponsors advertise and wont accept a bad word said about them and allow lies and deceptions from their members about them. That is annoying. But Phil Bloom doesn't do that. He does however give some very good reviews for FREE. So you can bypass the ads and get the facts. He is being called out over the 5D Hack but is that actually reality. What he has said so far has been fair. Those using this hack will have many problems that are just not there with the BMC. For the majority of stuff most will as things stand shoot prores. The only time you need raw is when you have no control over lighting. The 5D processes an incredible amount of data Maybe to much work for most.

Hacking the 5D PROVES technology has been held back but it is not a game changer or the biggest thing ever. It is simply competition for the BMC Kineraw Digital Bolex all at the lower end of the scale. The footage from the 5D colour wise Looks amazing but after settling down a bit I don't believe it is as cinematic as the BMC. The colours I've seen so far tie in with their lenses Bright and perhaps oversaturated. The best that can be said is it is like having a new film stock. Having one minute films with bright and pretty colours will not neccesarily translate into a watchable feature. It's not about how pretty the image is its about the story The acting The lighting The emotion. Maybe the 5D is oversaturated and maybe the BMC is under so maybe through colour correction there is a middle ground they should both reach..

Lets be fair although the Hack is great for the lower end The pro's will still be using the Canon C500 and not the 5D. But the lower end is certainly looking healthy now.

And yet i still really enjoy his review videos...

Let's not forget that he's has a much stronger preference for documentary style work, which makes the raw workflow even more cumbersome for him.  So i can see why he isn't pooping his pants over the 5D or the BMCC.

But at the end of the day he's pretty good at what he does.  I'd take PB, in terms of skill, over Laforet or Shulburt.

I'm still stunned that it's taken so long for people to understand the benefits of raw for video. Especially people who were calling for 4K, before raw.

But you are probably right, I think that raw will be standard on the >$3K prosumer models that come out in the years to come.

I pretty sure this whole 5d raw hack was green-lighted by Canon.  Japanese companies love is survey data, and I'm sure it's been telling them that Black Magic was about to eat their lunch.

I think raw is awesome and that a lot of the negativity towards raw is that feeling of climbing a mountain.

As a GH3 owner, I'll be likely hobbying it out with The Pocket Cinema Camera, and I'll probably roll out a few 'money shots' first on some of my projects. The use of the GH3 for now means I can hit my fast turnaround on music videos, which is usually literally days.

Image quality matters and I think this development from ML will hopefully bring these features and more into cameras like DSLRs properly very soon. Canon behave strangely! They could totally dominate the market and choose not to. Oh well.

Maybe Panasonic will finally release an FS700 competitor with a lovely RAW codec. (what on earth are they doing?)

    We shall see!

And here's an example with the 5D footage enhanced as well...5D on top, BMCC below, 1:1 @ 200%

...even enhanced, there are far more areas that do not resolve out to see blades but remain clumps.  Because the structure and detail has to be there to be enhanced.

This isn't "perceived detail", or false detail.  This is blades of grass:

...that's unaltered 5D on top, BMCC on the bottom, 1:1 to each other @ 200%

...if it were "false" detail then further enhancing wouldn't further resolve maintained blade structure, here still at 1:1 to each other, 5D on top and enhanced BMCC on the bottom (mild de-moire + my LCE scheme).

...and here we have 5D on top and BMCC on the bottom scaled down to 1080.  The comparison would be even worse for the 5D if you were to go the other direction.

Exciting news for videographers, however my opinion is that a lot of us are going nuts for it far too early. I cant knock the work Magic Lantern do (very impressive) but all this talk of the Canon 5d Mk III being the new 'king of the game' seems a bit silly.

My understanding is that there could be a very hungry RAW recording format working in the Mk III flawlessly. Its super cool because of its low light and full frame sensor, plus the loved up DSLR form factor. If it takes off then its awesome for those who have the time, resources and money to handle the huge lovely files and trust their camera won't melt into oblivion.

If anything, this advancement will become overshadowed by other camera developments very quickly. At the moment, we have a Black Magic Pocket Camera that will shoot RAW and 1080p ProRes out of the box with no potential issues for very little money. If the ML development really does cause a disturbance, I would be least surprised if a company like Black Magic announced another cinema camera with higher frame rates, a better sensor etc.... then suddenly BANG. Everyone wants that!

My point is, its a great development. Will i be buying into it? No - because I expect this will be history once an inevitable, 'proper' out-of-the-box advancement is available on the market with the benefits of the Mk III features, and more, with the peace of mind it won't break.

I hope everybody does go nuts for this Mk III RAW thing. Just means we get better cameras in future. :)

Based on the stills I like the color better on the BMCC.  Without processing the only shot I saw that was immediately more pleasing was the road with all the high frequency gravel (but you can't use either of these cameras without processing so what they're showing is a worst case scenario, representing a scene produced by someone who doesn't know what they're doing).  I've dealt with that kind of moire on the 7D and it's no big deal, while still retaining full luminance resolution.

The flesh tones on the instructor in the dojo were better on the BMCC.  In fact, even though he's smaller in frame, in the BMCC example, more flesh detail, not just tonality, is visible in and near the highlight area than in the 5D footage.  They even conclude this.

Here's the catch with the moire though: you only have to effectively filter color and because the BMCC isn't recording sub-sampled color but a full sample, once filtered you're not far from the 5DmkIII's color fidelity recorded with the hack.

edit: but please, don't get me wrong, I'm not implying this isn't great or exciting information.  It's fantastic for people who already own a 5D mkIII (and potentially most other model owners).  I reject the idea that it represents the best choice available for new camera purchase decisions.  Nothing to date suggests that's a rational conclusion.  There are no deal breakers or makers here apart from fixation on an individual aspect while ignoring a host of caveats.

    In reference to :vimeo.com/66170436

They crushed the blacks so it's not really a really a valid comparison of DR. The BMCC video has been shown to have more DR that 5D3 stills, so I'm not sure why they think the new 5D3 video hack would increase the 5D3 DR beyond its stills capabilities.

    (looking at the downloaded version)
Consider: @ 1:15 (BMCC) you can see more detail in the wood background, and the highlights are not blown out on his face@ 1:23 (5D3) you can see slightly less detail in the wood and his forehead is over exposed. Looks like a clear DR advantage for the BMCC
