  1. From my experiences I have yet to meet a clever person who gets excited about seeing a film in 3D.  People who choose the 3D version of a film are the same numbskulls who buy a kindle instead of the book.  The people know queue outside the Apple store all night for a new Iphone..  The ones who went and saw the remake of Total Recall.

They do it, but don't quite understand why they do it.  I assume it's because they are stupid and have nothing else to fill their spare time.

We could go back and forth about what is 'stupid' but really whose opinion on film making are we going to respect more? James Cameron or richg101 from EOSHD board?
  2. Actually I preferred Avatar in 2D.

Rich is right. 3D adds nothing artistic. It adds nothing to the story. Artists - i.e. proper filmmakers - don't need it.

It IS a gimmick to sell cinema tickets and televisions. Wake up! Look at the production cost of the tech, it is so cheap. Pair of plastic sun glasses and a software routine which any open source media player can do on a Windows laptop!

It isn't a magical future technology that is somehow not quite there yet. It never even got started. The current technology is a replay of the 1960's. What is needed is for genuinely new technology to get started and develop into something actually useful and artistic, preferably before it hits our cinemas.

James Cameron is a relic of an age now gone.  T2 and Aliens are flawless.  Avatar is not in the same league and even if it were, it gained zero benefit from being screened in 3D.  2D was more than adequate.  the 3D option was to make more money, not to benefit story telling.

    Maybe.  We'll see.

It takes a good director to say no and be listened to by the studio.  Hopefully the skillful directors will put their foot down and say that they don't want their work bastardised for the sake of a fad.  as these good guys die out, we'll see more and more stuff like the recent remake of Clash of the Titans where Ray Harryhausen's legacy was burned to ashes in a second by a kid who doesnt understand anything more than what is in front of his nose at that very point in time.  I bet the people who produced The Thing (2011) would have shot in 3d if they had only had the budget.  John Carpenter on the other hand wouldn't.

The point isn't really what you preferred. The point is that it was James Cameron's decision to film in 3D, not the studios. He still stands behind the format. For richg101 to say its for stupid people is, well , stupid. : )

  3. 3d will always be confined to films for stupid people.  proper artists don't hide behind gimmicks.  Only when the world has no real artists left will 3d become normality in film making.

James Cameron is one of the best Sci Fi/Action directors of all time. Critically acclaimed as well. Your post makes no sense.

  4. Alot of the things he gripes about can be fixed with a firmware upgrade. The other major thing was no swivel screen which isn't really a big deal if you already own an external monitor.

This doesn't look all that impressive, although I'd have to see a 4K projection to get the full effect.

I can't help feeling that there's an as yet unannounced 4K+ camera out there that will cost less than $5K and put this, the Alexa, and the Epic to shame.

Did you change quality to "original"? It defaults to 360p and looks like garbage.
  6. I was listening to the commentary for Looper, and director Rian Johnson said something interesting that I had never heard about anamorphic. He said since the lens is not aspherical that you can go really close and wide angle on someones face without having barrel distortion. It gives a cool effect that other lenses will not provide.
I dont know anything about anamorphic but that seemed very interesting to me.

Another thing Andrew, it's ok to have an opinion about something but I think you should be careful about saying windows has always been shit because you actually are starting a windows/mac trash debate with such generalizing remarks. I don't care what system I work with as long as it does the job. All I can say that since I started using windows 7 pro I never had a system crash and never had to "fiddle" with anything so I don't share the same experience you seem to have had, my editing system runs 16 hours a day, 6 days a week and combined with Edius I never had that go down either. So for me at least it works very well and very stable and that at a fraction of the cost I would have paid for a Mac pro.

With that said, will be looking forward to any new info/tests you can share, I only have to convince my wife why I need the camera, that will be the biggest challenge :D

I agree. Windows 7 has been virtually flawless for me.
  8. Great review. Dynamic range is my #1 aspiration, so this camera is very appealing.
I'd like to comment on the Windows dilemma. I use Apple mobile devices, and a macbook air. I wanted to build my own computer with high horsepower and top of the line hardware, so i decided to have a custom PC built. I was hesitant because of the old days of Blue Screen Of Death. However, Ive been using the PC for 2 years now with NO problems other than 2 lockups (over 2 years).
I firmly believe if you build (or have built) your own computer with hardware thats reliable then Windows runs smoothly. its when you start dealing with Dells, HPs, etc where alot problems arise. Not sure if its bad hardware or bloatware. This is just my discovery over the past 2 years.

look at the video. its fun and enjoyable to watch. he made the effort to get a girl to perform in front of the camera in an amazing location.

this will sell more cameras than a sharpness and dynamic range focused test by some stuffy kid on the internet.

If you were Panasonic, wouldn't you be very picky about who was posting footage of your new camera online the week of its announcement. Looks like theyre having a great time and all, but it's really not getting me hyped up for the GH3 , at all.

Footage from Photokina booth is a different story, but to send a preproduction camera to someone who is taking shots of his cat. I mean give one to Andrew for goodness sake.
