Roman Koenigshofer reacted to Andrew Reid in SLR Magic Rangefinder footage - kiss goodbye to focus breathing / Kowa anamorphic goes single focus
I have been out shooting with the SLR Magic Rangefinder.
    Key features:
It completely takes over focus from any prime lens Solves lens breathing (reduces to such low level it isn't noticeable) Adds cinema standard 240 degrees focus ring with FF gearing and hard stops Reduces minimum focus distance of all anamorphic lenses to 1m (even long-throw projector lenses) For those who shoot anamorphic especially this will be music to your ears. These shooters will also be familiar with diopters, which are used to correct aberrations and achieve very close focus. Effectively the SLR Magic Rangefinder is a variable diopter and thus a rather brilliant concept as it is capable of taking over focus from the taking lens entirely.

    Yes correct.
Yep and gives them hard stops as well. Canon L lenses stand to benefit a lot from that!
    Correct.
This is use I am most excited about on a personal level.
Yes basically gives a proper cine focussing ring to any lens, even if they have no focus ring at all like the Nikon 1 series stuff.
This one is right up there with Speed Booster as a game changer.
    Absolutely love the concept.
Let's hope it delivers enough performance to make good on the promise. I wouldn't expect an entirely free lunch, i.e. as pin sharp at F1.4 as the prime by itself, but when you take into how much it could change, a staggering amount, I'm willing to accept some trade offs to get it, especially if it means turning this into an Iscorama beater with butter smooth cine focus & 3ft close focus for a mere $600...

    Download the 4K original here
    NX1 is in stock at B&H ($1499)
The light in Berlin is dreary during winter, so I took the NX1 off for a break in the Portuguese city of Lisbon last week. This place has the best weather in Europe and the best light. A magical place.
It gave me a perfect chance to get under the skin of the NX1 - and see just what it can do in the real world.

Roman Koenigshofer reacted in Samsung NX1 - which is 4K video and which is the 28MP raw still? Can you tell?
Just the feel of the images really, but because of the watercolour chart you can literally see that B has more colours. More dynamic range by the looks of it too. The dead giveaway though is the large flat white area on the tube to the far left of the frame. In image A it has very visible banding, in B it's hard to find any at all. So either the NX1 has amazing video and awful raw stills, or I'm right.

    I hope I'm right.

Roman Koenigshofer reacted to Andrew Reid in Does Cinema EOS mark the end of high spec Canon DSLR video?
Indeed. What's interesting is that none of the defensive posters are actually enthusiasts. One owns an Epic and one's simply just an idiot with a keyboard instead of a camera. The problem with Canon is not the pro $12,000 stuff it is the enthusiast $1k-3k cameras that aren't giving us the innovation we want on the video side. Nobody can defend it, not even Canon themselves. Which is why they are so quiet about it.

Key word is "overall". Some facts my friend...

Sony A7S with a monitor on top kills the 1D C stone dead for image quality.
1D C is not full frame 4K. The active imaging area is barely any larger than Super 35mm in 4K mode, thus NX1 and GH4 with Speed Booster give a similar rendering of Canon full frame lenses
The codec is from another time, when dinosaurs ruled the earth. 4K MJPEG takes up 6 times the space on my drive that H.265 4K does.
Monitoring on the 1D C bare bones is a nightmare. No EVF, no peaking, in fact virtually nothing to help you focus
The GH4 and NX1 can be used bare bones without a monitor, far more pleasing to shoot with
The 1D C is $12,000... how many times do I have to mention ENTHUSIAST MARKET for you to get the point of the article?
The 1D C's codec has banding issues at low ISOs
The 1D C's sensor is rated barely 12 stops, the GH4 for 13 stops and the A7S for 14. So in that sense the raw stills aren't the best either

Like I said... Sony A7S with Shogun on top or 1D C with monitor on top just so you can focus... It's a no brainer. Image, usability, size, portability... everything is better on the Sony.

If Canon announced that they were withdrawing from the enthusiast stills camera market, you'd be surprised. It's a pretty big market. But withdraw from the enthusiast video market they almost certainly have at the moment, whether they meant to do or not.

Yes it feels lovely. It's like a 1D C but with a modern codec, 1/6th of the file sizes, EVF, better ergonomics, flip-out screen, more adaptable lens mount, lighter and smaller, and only $10,000 cheaper.

Yet still people complain about the grading... because blacks happen to be black.  :D

Samsung NX1 review is evolving, keep checking back.

The NX1 costs $1499 body only or $1699 with the 16-50mm power zoom OIS lens. Expected availability in the US: 28th November 2014.

I've been shooting with the Samsung NX1, an absolutely massive leap for camera technology - even a leap too far?

Take a cup of tea and enjoy my rolling review to find out whether the NX1 is a petulant robot here to make your life difficult, or pushing the bar higher for 4K and DSLRs.

Roman Koenigshofer reacted to nathanleebush in Panasonic GH4 vs Sony A7S compared - who wins the 4K battle on paper?
Gaaaagh! So close. If the A7s did 4K internally like the GH4 I'd be emptying my bank account instead of writing this comment.

This is a tough call for us stills and video hybrid shooters. The idea of a small, full frame, low light beast like the A7s is so compelling for stills, but for video, Panasonic is yet again one step ahead of the DSLR pack with the GH4, and we have to wait a generation while everyone catches up. I'm not willing to bring a bulky recorder around with me if I can get 4K in camera on the GH4. Sony was this close to the perfect camera for the moment. Oh well..

Also, still waiting for everyone to catch up to Olympus on IBIS, but that's a vent for another day..

I am not a pro, not in the cinema field. I write free-lance articles and illustrate them with my pictures. Nowadays, more and more magazines ask for motion pictures for their online presence, so I am learning film. I can probably sell smaller reports, short films, documentaries…

I trust Panasonic. They have been focused on my segment. They have listened to our ideas and criticism and developed the GH2-GH3-GH4 family accordingly. The GH4 looks like a finished product, not like a must-have idea. The M43 system has a good range of lenses, and the size/weight is certainly a benefit when travelling.

I don’t trust Blackmagic Design. They are very sympathetic but I don’t know, how interested they are in my segment. They look to be more interested in developing new ideas, instead of completing existing ones.

I don’t know about Sony. They look interested but they are so focused on the pro segment, they will probably forget me concerning some features.

I am sure about Canon. I will sell my stuff, I am just fed-up. What can I expect from a company, whose most interesting video features are handled by an enthusiastic hacker/reverseengineering community?

At last, I shouldn’t forget my first love, Nikon. There have been an April’s news about, Ricoh is buying them… I certainly hope so, because I don’t think Nikon is around here as an independent company in 3 years from now.

Roman Koenigshofer reacted to Andrew Reid in Discovery: 4K 8bit 4:2:0 on the Panasonic GH4 converts to 1080p 10bit 4:4:4
Pros are wondering what the benefit of 4K is to them in terms of overall image quality, when mastered and delivered for 2K / 1080p. A lot of work is still shot in 1080p and cameras like the Canon C300 are the workhorses of the moment.

In the case of the GH4 it may appear from the specs that it's just an 8bit 4:2:0 camera internally.

Actually the theory is 8bit 4:2:0 4K material from this camera can be taken through a workflow in post that converts it to 10bit 4:4:4 1080p - with all the smoother tonality, better colour and workflow advantages that format brings. This is a big leap for 1080p based on the much more expensive C300 which only does 8bit 4:2:2.

I asked Go Pro's David Newman (Sr. Dir. Software) whether this theory was correct...

I might condier one as well should there be more framerates and higher bitrates. Such features will cost Olympus allmost nothing. It's pretty straight foward really .. Improve couple of things and get 1-2 sold to me.. or do not improve and get nothing sold to me. ;)

if Olympus enable 24/25p and 50/60p then I would seriously consider choosing the E-M1 over the soon to be released GH4.

fingers crossed.... for my needs, I think I would prefer to have the 5 axis stabilisation than most of the GH4 features.
