It is actually the G80's successor. The zero in the G80 comes from a short-lived and idiotic naming scheme to identify out grey market imports. It's really a G8. But they called it G80/G85 depending on region. The range though, goes all the way back to G1. And G6 was very similar product in relation to GH2. Same sensor, similar video features. What has changed is the price... no longer is it targeted at sub-$1000 consumer market. A very good point. People should dive deep as they can into their stuff and buy camera books, lights, LUTs, learn more and more, rather than splash out every 6 months. I am a guilty one but I have no choice, need to constantly keep on cutting edge of the latest gear to keep the blog fresh. But certain things I have kept hold of for a long time... like the 1D C and Samsung NX1. Really comfortable with them and know them inside out.

Just got the Sigma 24-35mm F2.0, it's an amazing looking image The big surprise is this... With the Sigma MC-11 adapter it tracks AF in video mode like a Sony FE mount lens. The Metabones adapter does not do this. Going to try a few more lenses on the MC-11... The adapter is just superb with Sigma's own stuff on the A7R3

24-35 is like having a 24-50 F2 constant on the A7R III due to Super 35mm crop mode.

How about the Sigma 24-35mm F2? Worth a punt?

To be fair, Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM is a brick as well 24-70 F4 on the other hand... tiny. But is it any good? Anyone used it?

Panasonic will soon(ish?!) send me a GH5S to play with so I’ll check it out.

It doesn’t change the situation with Pro Color because the A7R III doesn’t let you select BT.2020 with a standard gamma curve, only LOG (HLG) mode... So you can’t use it for straight out of camera colour (which is what EOSHD Pro Color is for). You need to add a LUT. In the article I say BT.2020 is developed jointly by BBC and NHK. It’s not a Sony standard but a HDR broadcast standard. Canon use it as well. S-Gammut is the Sony equivilent wide colour space. And that needs tweaking to work well and / or expert grading.

So I can update EOSHD Pro Color for Sony's latest colour science tweaks yours truly bought the new A7R III from Berlin's one and only Sony Store this week. Was thinking of doing a review of the G9. The G85 was a good bargain. This time, price has shot up. I like the ergonomics of the body better than the GH5 - The top-LCD and layout changes make for a more comfortable camera There is no lag when finishing a clip. You hit record and it stops immediately The EVF is massive... However, has anybody else noticed the DRAMATIC pincushion distortion in the viewfinder... It's really not nice. Very distracting. AF seemed better than the GH5. It was as quick to do a one-time AF-S in movie mode as in stills mode. GH5 is slower to do that. The AF during 4K was not up to Sony or Canon's best, but it was again seemingly better than the GH5 in the brief time I tried it out. Does not come close to A7R III for video AF overall though. Pic profiles... The lack of Hybrid LOG Gamma is a shame. Sony did not feel the need to pull SLOG or HLG from their flagship stills camera (A7R III)... Panasonic apparently did. But then again, Sony did not include them in the A9 so they are not entirely sane either. All in all, G9 or GH5? I'd say GH5. Now they are practically the same price, but one is 10bit with HDR and one is 8bit SDR, it's a bit too silly to lose that for the sake of slightly better body handling and AF. And the BIG viewfinder with that much distortion gives me pause for thought as well. I am all for big viewfinders, but do you really want so much pincushion in EVERY shot?

Just last month I went to visit Panasonic UK for a hands-on with the new Panasonic GH5S. My full review is in the pipeline but first an introduction to the new camera on the block... The GH5S has a newly developed 10.2MP sensor for enhanced low light performance, as well as 240fps 1080p S&Q. Furthermore for the first time since the GH2 this sensor is an over-sized 1.86x crop multi-aspect sensor. Possible for the first time is 60p at Cinema 4K resolution (4096 x 2160), whereas the GH5 is just Ultra HD 60p. The field-of-view will be slightly wider in Cinema 4K on the GH5S compared to the GH5 due to the larger sensor. The new CMOS also brings colour improvements with a new 14bit readout and less noise. There's always going to be an enormous amount of junk out there and there's no point censoring it. I think some people think this is what I was getting at in the article... nope. Leave the junk out there. But take some responsibility for it. Give kids some other way of venting, letting off stream and entertaining themselves. Stop promoting it on trending lists and YouTube home page. Stop cross-linking to it from other videos. Have some editorial direction as YouTube. Don't promote it, don't give it a platform for it to thrive on... and above all, hope the next generation are smart enough to not watch it. This one's fucked. Too late for them. This is their culture now, they own it and are doomed to repeat it... the culture of vanity, insensitivity, selfishness and above all MONEY and LOOKS.

The only thing trivial here is your response. A resigned *sigh* rather than a call for quality content. This is a very simple problem to fix. YouTube takes editorial responsibility, ditches the algorithm driven trending home page and ranking system, actively promotes good quality stuff so that people sees it, starts investing in content like all other TV networks do. YouTube is not just a platform for hosting videos, it is a mass media channel. Time they took responsibility. And if you don't understand that Joachim or what's at stake... why the fuck are you a filmmaker? You may as well not be.

One thing I like about the X Pro 2 is you can just stay in stills mode, press a record button to reel off video, without having to switch to a fiddly movie mode on a fiddly dial. The X-T2's mode dial is a nightmare and quite unnecessary.

How's the AF in video mode on the A7R III? Will be trying it out in January.

Yes it's the latest version. I have not needed to update it since the original release!
