There are an almost infinite number of combos affecting these things but yes, 'white' caucasian skin for sure shows up the most magenta and more so in men and more so in men over a certain age and if they are drinkers, well... And then the DJ has his pink light on everything and we're all magenta! I'm about to do my next phase/gen of colour, or at least within the next couple of weeks after the next few jobs now I am 100% L Mount. I wasn't too bothered previously about having my stills match my video though you couldn't tell the difference between my Sony and Nikon files, but that is because they have been edited together. I've been very happy for the last 1.5 years with the SOOC look of my video files from my S5ii's and S9, but that is probably more because of the use of a 1/8th mist that reduces a bit of contrast and that 'digital' look, plus I am baking in an Arri inspired LUT. The combination of those 2 things gets me to about 80% of the finished image with another approx 10% being some very minor tweaks in post to some, but far from all bits of footage, mostly just some; cropping, straightening, exposure and minor WB and then another approx 10% with the creative LUT slapped on over the top. OK, it's not slapped, but gently laid over the entire timeline and the individual clips have a final tweak if needs be. It's not high end grading by any means, but I'm more than happy with the result. Could it be better? Sure and I've got a direction I'd like to take it and all be doing so over the coming weeks with the stills perfectly aligned with the video for future jobs.

Ntblowz might be onto something. I 99.9% shoot caucasian people, and red skin patches might be more prone to white skin. Obviously your still is graded and not a rec 709 conversion. But agree here it looks good. But might also have to do with the skincolor. Allthough I never seem to have any skintones issues with blackmagic or canon c500ii and on my s5ii footage this always pops up.
-
That is interesting, I wonder that is the reasoning about all these colour science differences between brands/camera's etc.
-
And just to show that there are as many arguments for Lumix over Black Magic, probably because I clicked on that YouTube link above, I'm getting such comparisons in my feed now (!!), I clicked on one and grabbed a frame: What are those greens...I'm sorry, yellows supposed to be on the left (BM) image and are those skin tones better? Not to my eyes and taste they are not, albeit this dude had slapped his LUT on these, but still... Click on the pic for a better view but there pic on the right looks far more pleasing and natural to me.

Far right cameras 😂

Speaking of colour science when we shoot indian weddings the Lumix looks more pleasing than Sony straight up... the ugly yellow really ruined it without colour grading. When we do some livestream for Chinese (which is predominately Sony) they were shocked with the colour coming from Lumix cam, you know aisan really hate yellow on their already yellow skin. They really prefer pale and magenta more which Canon is really good at, which lumix is kinda similarish in that regard. This time last year I am all Sony.. FX3/FX30/E1.. sold them all and never regret. (well except the 4k60p crop but luckily my Canon can all do non crop 4K60p ha). I m still deciding between S1RII or S1II at end of the year when wedding season start to ramp up in southern hemisphere, 2 of my friend is gonna get S1II so I kinda want to be a bit different to them.

I have just been to see F1 directed by Joseph Kosinski with Brad Pitt as leed.scored as follows 10 is Super and 1 is pee weak.story 8 Cinematography 8 acting 8 -sound 8 putting the audience in the F1 drivers seat 5. Compared to "Rush" 2013 with the James Hunt and Niki Lauda battles story 9 Cinematography 7 acting 9 sound 7 putting the audience in the F1 drivers seat 2. Compared to Grand Prix 1966 John Frankenheimer & shot on Super Panavision 70 story 6 rather lame and artificial ,Cinematography 9 amazing for 1966,acting 6 ,sound 9 ,putting the audience in the drivers seat 9

Define ‘bad’? -5 magenta and boom. One camera is a Golf GTi and the other is a Porsche Boxster. One is a better all-rounder and the other is better at one specific thing. Mid-range mirrorless vs low end cinema camera 🤷♂️
-
I know its not the same, but it is super obvious how red the skintones are on the s1ii. (Have not looked into much other comparison videos, but I saw this one passing my fb feed) Could you fix it sure, but why is it so bad right out of camera? And it is something users have been complaining about for years, and they even made it worse.. Sure most reviewers that got shipped an camera from panasonic dont point this out..
-
So this has changed from you comparing S1Rii colour compared with S5ii compared with OG S5 to S1ii vs Black Magic, I can't keep up 😜 I could change the topic now to your Black Magic colour science vs my Lumix IBIS. But in all seriousness, there is no one single one stop solution to anything but rather a case of whatever suits your needs best!
-
Here is an example where it is quite obvious. (With the s1ii vs blackmagic) the skintone difference is massive. While on the blackmagic I would not need to change the skintones at all on the s1ii it would need some tweaking to get rid off the red skintones. Ok many clients prolly won't notice it or would complain about it. But I sure do see it + panasonic has the most different colour science of sony. Which at the moment is the market leader over here. And 1 client specific told me they liked colour science of sony the most, prolly because the market is flooded with sony footage and that is what they are used too. (Was on a shoot with a mix of panasonic and sony camera's next to each other, so we had to grade the panasonic footage to the sony look :') )

There loss is our gain. As soon as I get the chance, I am going to put up this Arri log against Andy log and Joel log in a direct head to head. Regardless of result, I can really only choose Andy or Joel log because I can put that on all 4 cameras but the official Arri only on 1. Andy log = @Andrew Reid version of what the Arri lut might be for Lumix cameras. Joel log = Phantom Luts which are designed to replicate various Arri based movie looks.

Sony finally notices that people like small cameras, releases RX1R III
MrSMW replied to eatstoomuchjam's topic in Cameras
Buy used and let some other mug take the hit! I do sometimes buy new myself, but I’d estimate that 75-80% of all my purchases (cameras and lenses) in the last 5 years have been used. This new release does seem VERY overpriced that and possibly a bit speculative of them as the old model is trading quite high? -
I disagree and you can call me a Lumix fangirl or shill, but having or having had all 3, nah. The OG S5 did/does have a marginally better image quality than the S5ii as did the S1H and S1R and I think the magic is back with the S1Rii. Based on both my limited so far testing and the results of others who have not just jumped to Lumix or have limited skills in the first place. There is some outright shit out there as there is for any and every camera because it’s not just the camera, but the lens, the use of the kit, the environment, the editing/processing, the output and presentation and yada yada yada. The bottom line is if you don’t feel it’s for you and you have a system that works better for you, cool, but this system other than a couple of lens shaped holes is now extremely mature. IMO, the mojo is back. S5ii still rocks for longer form content and whilst SOOC it might have an image a fraction behind the older stuff and the newer kit, it takes hardly any effort to tweak it. As above, credit where credit is due and I was heading towards Nikon or Sony, but Lumix have done enough to have my loyalty and I am now 100% within L Mount. *Caveat; subject to the next 5 days real world test, ie, paid work that no amount of testing can replicate, but expect no issues as 3 of 4 cameras I have been working with for 1.5 years already and it’s only the S1Rii that is new*

I got in touch with the person who's doing this project and we've been emailing back and forth about it. There's now a YouTube channel and a sample video (with more to come).
-
I've never really felt like the color science was bad, though I do think the S5 had a special image, but even if I did, with real time lut you can pretty much nail it right in camera after making your own lut, negating any issues one might have with color science.

Man all the recently released camera price have gone through the roof, I guess this will be the new norm -
We have guys like that, buying the newest gear and sell in quite short time (like a month)

Looks like a great camera, but what prevents me buying it is the colour science. It looks worse then s5ii, and s5ii was already worse then the s5. The skintones look horrific magenta with red blotches. Which is the biggest problem with this camera imo. Sure you could fix it with some post work. But why would I buy this camera when there are numerous options out there that dont have this problem. And saves me time each project.

Could well be and no idea either. I wouldn't knowingly buy stolen good myself, but I guess we'd never know, especially if the legit company selling them to you is the source.

100% I'd easily pick the II model over the III...and was considering it but scratched that itch with the Zf...and despite that being my favourite ever camera to shoot with, selling it, for the second time, but needs must. Anyone EU also want to buy a minty Zf?! 🤪 -
The RX1R can be had for as little as 700 quid and has the same very good Zeiss lens. The Leica M Typ 240 remains the cheapest and most underrated Leica for 2 grand if that floats your boat. I regret selling mine. The Sigma Fp-L with EVF-11 has same sensor as the RX1R III, but like the a7rc isn't as pocketable with a 35mm F2 on the front. The attraction of the RX1R for me has always been the fun factor and size, plus that Zeiss lens is one of the best you can get, perfectly optimised for the sensor and it sits right up against it, without the optical compromises of E-mount. But in some ways the Mark III goes backwards from the RX1R II, which sells for around £2k second hand. No articulated screen any more, and the beautifully engineered pop-up EVF is replaced with a boring standard one for cost reasons. If you don't need 4K or 60MP, that 42MP Mark II does a lot of things right including phase-detect AF. One thing I am curious about with the new model is whether they have modernised the lens. As the original lens had a big heavy element that moves around and slows down the AF system. The RX1R III at £4200 in the UK bodes well for the used price in a couple of years, probably down around £2800 unless they are really scarce. The US price seems to have been Trump-fucked. One final thought is I wish Sony would do a camera this size with E-mount, to give us something other than the Fp-L and Panasonic S9 to play with.

Sony finally notices that people like small cameras, releases RX1R III
BTM_Pix replied to eatstoomuchjam's topic in Cameras
Comparing the a7RC versus the RX1R III, it is £1700 cheaper. There are plenty of compact 35mm full frame e-mount lenses that will leave you with enough change to buy a few (many) more focal lengths if you don’t want to be locked into the 35mm. Its going to be bigger of course but so is your bank balance. This might actually tip people over the edge to the a7RC that were sitting on the fence waiting for the MkIII of the RX1R. So the bastards win either way. -

Or a new LX10, or bette lr a GM 1with rhe latest Lumix technology -
Yeah - I was talking as an alternative tiny camera for the people who might be a target market for the rx1r iii. 515g (a7cr body only) is closer to 498g (body+lens of rx1r iii) than 723g (a7r v). Though they're all big enough that they won't fit in a pocket, unless you're wearing some Matty G cargo pants. (Maybe someday, some vendor will make a decent quality digital Olympus XA-1 - come on, OM System! Get with it) The ergonomics on the V look a LOT better, as you said. But sorry if I was unclear that I meant the specs on the sensor look similar between the two cameras. I'm willing to bet that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in still photos or 4K video taken on the A7CR and A7R5. 😃
