New cinema camera...?
- Today

For sure, and I'd be excited to give it a try! I was a Kickstarter backer of the Z Cam E1 and I've bought a few Ribcage kits/cameras over the years. I was disappointed by all of them, but I'm still hoping for that magical/usable tiny sensor camera! I have a little bag full of D-mount and C-mount lenses just waiting to go on something! (I still wish there were a way to get a decent/non-laggy video feed from the Insta360 One R/RS series - I have a Ribcage-modded 1" module and the quality is really decent - but focus is hard, given the only options for monitoring are the camera's tiny screen or laggy wifi)

I found an interview with the person who shot the under-water sections of a GoPro promo video (IIRC it was for the Hero 3 or 3+), and the level of effort they put into it was simply incredible. He had a team of about 5, three crew and two cast, and they had a week for production. He was an independent DOP and had done some pre-production as part of his 'pitch' to GoPro to get the gig, but I think they did detailed pre during the week as well as camera tests and lots and lots of shooting. This was only for the underwater shots (the bikini girl diving beneath the waves). If we assume that each of the (maybe half a dozen?) locations each got 5 people for a week, then that's ~7500 hours just to film the 1-2 minute promo video. The level of cherry-picking is extreme - professional DOPs pitching projects, travel to the most exotic locations, testing of all modes with all manner of equipment, everyone in cast and crew are professionals, long shooting days at the best times (golden hour, etc), dozens of hours of footage just to make a short promo. Then people set it to auto, hold the tiny camera in their hand and film their family at the beach with whatever lighting and weather happens to be there at the time and then we wonder why it doesn't look like the promo videos... Having said all that, if GoPro make an interchangeable lens camera with a half-decent bitrate and a colour-managed LOG profile then it might be the tiny camera we've been wanting!

Like with anything, it's best not to get too revved up over the hype and wait until there are actual cameras around to check out. GoPro are, of course, hiring professionals and cherry picking the very best footage/images that any of them captured. Otherwise, the concept of using an action camera ASIC in a cinema camera isn't new - it was exactly the strategy with the Z Cam E1. Since then, action cameras have advanced a lot, thankfully. Similarly, the Z Cam E2 series used/uses an off the shelf Hisense board, though that one was intended for higher-end security cams/consumer cameras and not action cameras.

Electronic VND Adapter for Blackmagic L-Mount Cameras
-
I've used both the dumb adapter and the electronic one on a bunch of Lumix bodies and I basically rely on them. Most of my lenses are EF or EF converted. As you would expect they are super useful. I do run and gun doc, so these are lifesavers. I love being able to fine tune exposure while leaving my aperture and ISO where I want it. The actual physical control of these is very smooth. There's a bit of a vignette at max ND. They are not super well-built. After a few years with these adapters, two smart adapters have failed on their own after developing intermittent connection issues. Sometimes cleaning electronic contacts with rubbing alcohol has helped extend the life of my adapters. Still, the cameras lose connection to the lens and stop recording randomly when this happens, so its really not a reliable system when your adapter starts to give out. Generally, I prefer the dumb adapter for this reason - I've used it a lot and had no connection issues. Also, on a recent shoot, my camera got smacked against something and the adapter was the fail point - breaking clean in half. So I saw inside the adapter, and the length of screws connecting the two sides of it did not inspire a great deal of confidence. Compared to something like the Meike adapter with drop in filters, my experience is these are not robustly built - they don't feel solid or co-operate with some heavier lenses like a canon 100-400. But with all those caveats, these things rule and make shooting easier. Especially the dumb adapter, for manual primes. I love Fotodiox for making cheap adapters to fill gaps in all sorts of workflows and I think that's exactly what this is - cheap gear that doesn't last forever. I do wish the electronic adapter was more reliable.

why don't you just go for the Techart TZM-02 & it should take most of your vintage primes so long as they are under 500gms ??? yep I have looked at that -the focus speed is still relatively slow ,the outlay is Aus $500 and here is two guys the adapter failed within 12 months ! Due to the country it is made the chances of having them repaired is slimmer than a M42 to Z mount adapter.

Why Hollywood is Facing a Very Unhappy Ending -a 12min video by Bloomberg
Aussie Ash replied to Aussie Ash's topic in Cameras
Going to the movies has also had a massive decline ,I went to see F1 about a week after it opened and there was only seven people in the theatre !! Compare that to "Jaws" in 1975 and it was chock a block full and everyone reacted when the head fell out of the hole in the boat ! As i understand it Reading theatres own their Multiplexes so would be sitting on huge real estate gains but must be operating the theatres at a loss -

Yes. It’s been tough for people in the industry. I’ve been dealing with some issues myself since August of last year. I’ve re structured and started doing more personal projects with the hopes of building out a niche that will be worthwhile. Godspeed to all those experiencing this hardship. -

I’m never going back to 4/3rds for photography or video. Absolutely nothing against it and was very tempted with a pair of OM-1’s when they first came out but in the end decided that for my needs, I was better served by full-frame and high megapixel full-frame for crop ability so I could lose some of those bigger, heavier, longer lenses. I have considered it for personal use but came down in favour of the phone option. Not because it’s better, but because it’s 2 devices over 1 and I have it with me always. Now 4/3 sensor in a phone and… I do hope 4/3 continues to be developed as it has so many fans, but I struggle to see it the way things are.

Panasonic says nothing for 30 minutes at CP+ 2026
Yannick Willox replied to John Matthews's topic in Cameras
I would buy a compact photography oriented m43 Lumix camera, which is a significant upgrade over a gx85, in an instant. just for the sakes of those great m43 lenses I have, and to be able to use those a decade longer. the g9 ii is just too big and expensive for my photography hobby. -
