Video Hummus

On a $1700 M1 MBP. 8K RAW Lite included when playback mode set to "performance" in FCP. Premiere has garbage performance about anyway you slice it. This has been my experience as well. R5 has been a great camera after FW 1.3.1. 8K RAW is an awesome tool and it looks great! I use it to fake camera movement in a 4K timeline for select shots. I have not once been kicked out of 4KHQ mode or RAW Lite mode. I shot a mix of video and stills all day last Sunday—mostly 4KHQ but several 2-5 minute 8K RAW Lite clips. Camera was turned off for 5-8 mins at a time in-between taking stills or video (left on tripod or in my hand). The time remaining counter did not dip below 15 mins at any point in the day. I remember seeing it at 15 mins remaining at one point...I turned off the camera, walked and scouted around for 15 mins turned on the camera and the timer said 25 mins. Ambient temperature was 77F and dipped to 74F after a freak thunderstorm. R5 is one of the best hybrid cameras out there right now with C-Log 3 and 8K RAW. I don't know why people are complaining about it. Buy the right tool for the job. You have tons of great options: C70, FX6, FX3, R3? (perhaps), S1H, even S5. Totally agree. It's beyond stupid it isn't there in a $2500 R mount camera.

I think it’s pretty clear the main processor and DSP become pretty toasty on the R5. The CFExpress heat is a contributing side factor as well. But please don’t buy the R5 thinking you will make it into a 8K C500 (Unless you are @Matt Perks) You are buying the wrong camera. We have a masochist here lol.

Any tidbits about possible sensor? Sony doesn’t have a 24MP MFT sensor listed on their website. So perhaps it’s a custom ordered design from Panasonic and JIP. I think the internal ND feature would make it stand out, especially if they can keep the G9/S5 form factor. I’m still on the hunt for a smallish camera that shoots 4K with good AF. If it has internal ND and much improved AF It would jump to the front.

I can see your point. We are also up to 6 months away from a potential release and they were clearly teasing that there is more surprises. I would want to hope those surprises are big ticket items like internal ND or internal RAW or both. I find internal RAW less likely than an internal ND. They seem to be all in on external RAW options. DFD AF could be workable if they can get it to work at 24/30fps as well as it does at 50/60fps. Hopefully the new processor and faster scanning sensor will allow them to sample more and achieve more accurate adjustments with less pulsing. There is also no known 24MP MFT sensor from Sony out there at the moment so we don't even really know what sensor they could possible be using.

I think 24MP is plenty for a MFT camera. I suspect 120p won't be cropped. There are so many things they could improve to make a better camera: Bright, higher definition LCD somewhere around 800nits and 3.5" or larger. Phase Detect Autofocus with eye, face, body tracking. Animal AF a bonus! Internal RAW High dynamic range (12.7 - 14 stops) Internal ND Refined color science Smaller than a C70 Basically make a better, smaller Canon C70--with a viewfinder!

Hopefully that 5.7K on the GH6 is internal RAW. The 25-50mm f1.7 is a pleasant surprise. It and the 10-25mm will be a great, but expensive, two lens setup. I'm not sure it makes much of a compelling difference to a FF 24-105mm f4...apart from maybe offering 20mm on the wide end. Also lets not forget Panasonic always holds back for future firmware updates. Really, really hope GH6 has PDAF. Live-streaming is a smart pivot for these cameras for sure. Go Panasonic!

This is why I hope Dominion wins their suit against Fox News, NewsMax, and others for their blatant, malicious lies and deception. Many of the worlds woes can be traced back to "opinion news", perhaps the most ridiculous pair of words together I have ever seen, and this toxic tabloid conspiracy theory fear mongering prattle from Murdoch owned companies and others.

It's the implementation of a codec. Sometimes steps are cut to speed encoding because of hardware/power consumption issues. This is also the endless confusion that photographers and videographers fight over because most camera's use different readouts (12-bit vs 14-bit for stills) for different modes. I wish I had 14-bit RAW on the R5 it would be amazing. Well, I do, it's just at 12fps and in photo mode only.

Does the S1R still suffer from the same issue?

The only Mark II of an entire series is a product company telling you politely that the series is dead. I think they would have been better to have a formal wake and celebrate the legacy and then promote their new L-Mount commitment.

Yeah, I agree. They should have developed a new mount with a flange distance that could accept MFT lenses and played around with crop modes on FF that were perhaps larger than standard MFT to make it exciting. Perhaps a MFT standard crop and then a non-standard (or variable!) crop closer to APSC. And what has Leica done for L-mount other than name it? Kinda lopsided relationship this alliance is. Just much more excitement in the RF and E-mount spaces in my opinion. I do like Sigma's L-mount cameras. I would just like to see mark 2 versions of them with a bit more ecosystem. I suspect Nikon will release more compelling FF Z mount glass and probably killer Z DX telephotos....if they get around to it. They theoretically have a great mount to design smaller and faster lenses on. It's pretty dumb if a GH6 is coming. They risk pissing off people who buy the Mark 2 and they are signaling (with the flaccid specs) to the diehard fans waiting for a GH6 to just move on.

Ehh, not looking good for MFT or even LUMIX for that matter. Real shame. There is nothing left for them to capitalize on anymore. We have fast full frame 4K120p 40-50MP sensor cameras with crop version variants coming for RF and Z-mount and maybe even Sony E-mount. They should just focus on releasing a PDAF FF LUMIX camera with as much gusto as possible and work on getting L-mount fleshed out with exciting lenses.

Beyond the 14 stops is some ARRI secret sauce. Maybe it’s the price 😎

Much improved to me is less work in post. So yes, they are improving.

I have an R5, too. After the firmware updates it has been a great camera. I use the 8K as a specialty mode for faking slider or other camera movement in 4K timeline or lower. CLOG3 improved the DR issue and I think it looks great compared to other Sony cameras. The 4KLQ mode is more than useable for YouTube long form content. It's better than EOS R and that was a great "YouTube" camera. I can edit everything (8K isn't completely smooth) off of a $1600 M1 13" MBP. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Can't wait to see more from Canon. Sony has been crushing the technical side of things and their color science has improved a lot since A7III days.

Yes, I would much rather pay a higher price to not deal with the stress caused by dickhead scammers. That time you never get back. Money can be made, time can't. So I take the hit and sell gear to shops with more consideration for what is needed versus wanted.

Would be nice to see a channel that reviews camera gear but waits for the actual product to be on the shelves and rents it for the review and testing. No company contacts. No free products given ahead of time. No pressure to say good or bad things about it. No marketing spec bullshit to say. It would have to be funded by donations, memberships, and ad-sense revenue. Gerald is the only channel I watch for product launch marketing and I do it with a pinch of salt. I'm there for a synopsis of the manual and capabilities of the camera (hopefully tested), but I don't care for the conclusions or buying advice given. He should just cut that out of his videos all together because it's ludicrous to give buying advice to people with such varying needs and wants. But since Amazon affiliate links are broken as fuck, everybody does it.

Ebay (and PayPal) is toxic as fuck. I don't know how anybody can use it. I tried to sell some unused camera stuff a few years back and every bid I got was fraudulent and some dickhead trying to get me to send a product before PayPal payment "cleared". Meanwhile E-bay takes seller fees. 🖕🏻 The whole experience is dog shit and after that I never touched the site again. Same with PayPal. They fucking suck too. If you factor in the time and stress, @Andrew Reid, that you had to deal with you are out much more than £1754.

I believe this is Japanese but even without understanding anything I can tell it was a way better "review" or hands-on than DPReview did. Yes, I have nothing against information style videos like Gerald did. I quite enjoy CVP much more as they actually use the camera and offer feedback. Gerald's videos are kinda like technical launch promo videos. I find the deep dives of the technical bits useful and I throw the rest away, including any buying advice. Infinitely more useful than anything from Peter McKinnon or Matti. They are now purely lifestyle channels with a camera fetish slant. When people say influencer those guys are the textbook definition. When they want something they ask or e-mail companies to send them free shit and then tell you to stay humble.

I don't see the big deal. It's free content where he pretty thoroughly tells you about a camera. Use your brain to decide if its right for your artistry. Rent the gear and try it out. Andrews beef was he compared it to Sony A7R series and judged it by that and not just let it stand on its own. Perhaps Gerald should stop giving buying advise and just stick to telling you facts about operating modes and handling and use cases based on the time he had with it. The ALEXA Mini is a terrible camera when you try to shoehorn it into a consumer A7 series criteria checkbox list (no grip, no EVF, hard to hand hold) It's just a different tool.

To be fair Gerald’s audience isn’t who the fp camera is for and he knows it. I was recently looking at the fp-L + tiny sigma 24mm f3.5 as a small b-cam and backup high-megapixel photo camera (electronic shutter not an issue for my use case). I agree the 61MP sensor in such a small body is pretty cool and the ability to strip it down by taking off a modular grip and EVF is attractive. Lots of options. I would still like to see a bit more ecosystem pop up before I drop some money.

ZENMUSE X5S is exactly this and it is much bigger. Perhaps they can get a M43 sensor with a slightly redesigned camera module. M43 is around 24% larger. I think the sensor size is doable but the optics might be harder.
