  1. Nope, you don’t. I didn’t say a camera needed it. We didn’t say it replaced manual focus. But yes, it’s a great feature to have for unrehearsed shooting. It did a much better job than I could have on the fly. I don’t shoot TV shows or movies with 5+ people on set. I’m just a dude with a camera that enjoys great tracking autofocus. I don’t think it should replace any bodies job in those roles but I want it in my mirrorless camera.
  2. Pretty good when you have tap-to-track AF. I use this with R5 and it works really well. For instance, my wife was combing for sea shells at the beach. I was low to the ground at 70mm f2.8. I simply taped on LCD on her hand and it put a box on it and tracked her hand as she was moving it toward and away from the camera. It worked flawlessly in that situation and the effect of the focus racking with her hand was pleasing. Panasonic should aim for something similar. It's not a tool to use on absolutely everything but when it does work it is one last thing your brain has to do.
  3. Also there seems to be a possibility Samsung and Olympus/OM-D (JIP) could be working on a partnership. Most likely JIP selling M.Zuiko brand/lenses for use on new Samsung smartphone cameras. Would be nice to see OM-D get new Samsung tech in their cameras.
  4. Sure what whatever is fastest. That would be the aim for a real review without any outside pressure. So, yes.
  5. As long as the review system relies on receiving review units early this problem will only get worst. Nobody is going to bite the hand that feeds them. Because eventually you will slip off the priority review gear list, and then not be invited to special events, and eventually receive nothing at all. Why? Because it’s marketing and they by definition are seeking a ROI. Simply stop taking free gear from companies to review and buy it on the market. Review it and be as brutally honest as you want. Re-sell to reduce losses and make up the balance wnd some profit with donation/memberships/subscriptions.
  6. Thats why I'm hoping there is no overheating with this camera but there probably will be because they want to sell their C70.
  7. C-Log 2 is kinda included when shooting internal RAW video. Even on the R5, the RAW has more detail in the shadows. There is noise there but it can be cleaned up and an extra stop or so achieved. R5 with C-Log 3 is great. No complaints here. Yes, I'm very interested in this camera as video-centric hybrid if it doesn't have deal breaking overheating limits. Kinda sounds crazy but this sized camera with IBIS and optional EIS will probably preform fairly well in the field. Just don't use ultra wide FOV lenses 20mm and below.
  8. Alright so R3 is looking pretty juicy for Canon and RF users. 30.1 MP BSI stacked sensor internal RAW video Oversampled 4K w/ C-Log 3 No mention of frame rates but I would assume it does 4K120p since it has latest DigicX processor in it. 4K probably oversampled from around 6.5K and internal 6K RAW with, I’m guessing, a slight crop. Rolling shutter will probably be very, very good and DR will be improved slightly with BSI. Now where will the cripple hammer show up?
  9. Gerald released his “What Cameras are Other Youtubers Using” video and 85% of them were using A7SIII in a studio with controlled lighting. Second was A1, and then S5, R5, and RED Monstro. Maybe 10% of them would use the A7SIII out in the wild where the crazy 12,800 ISO is useful. Power of hype machine and branding dollars to spend.
  10. You can ignore them and they won’t earn a cent off your time. Life is to short to spend it churning the proverbial shit bucket again and again.
  11. Resolve has it, yes. I was hoping FCP would add those native features too. Currently FCP doesn’t have a non-plugin way of doing those two things.
  12. It will only work if there is some special sauce related to Apple hardware. Otherwise, just buy Resolve. I would still like to see a few built-in, hardware accelerated features that are included with Resolve, namely: Content-aware erase tool for video, 3D tracking of most objects via Neural Engine, a "AI" assisted color matching tool that is a 90% solution for quick and dirty color matching (I would use this for drone footage). Anything else I'm happy to have covered by plug-ins and keep the core of FCP fast and performant.
  13. Who will do it? 😄 https://kolarivision.com/product/canon-r5-cooling-mod-service/ I would consider it as a "upgrade" after my warranty is expired and I have a R5 Mk2 or R3 in arsenal or even A1 mk2.
  14. There was some mumblings about Apple moving FCP to this model. Most likely in a bundle with their other Pro apps like Motion 5. I think this is a terrible idea, especially since they aren't feature complete like some other apps...however their performance is top notch.
  15. I agree with shooting for the Sony Alpha A1 and adapting F mount lenses until you grow native E mount. Alpha A1 seems to do pretty good at everything and has 8K video and improved DR over what you have. Canon just doesn't have enough native RF lenses yet and since you don't have any EF lenses, it really doesn't make much sense to buy anything from Canon.
  16. So are we going to see a Canon camera with latest Sony sensor technology AND internal, reasonably compressed RAW? 🤔
  17. LOL. Axe that. I forgot Komodo was S35...
  18. Which is kind of interesting because they have official said it shoots oversampled 4K and internal RAW. The internal RAW could be anywhere from 5K to 8K. I highly doubt they have the 45MP R5 sensor in there and underselling its capability... And further rumors put the sensor around 30MP mark, which I find more believable than 20MP at this point. So maybe it has 6K internal RAW with a stacked sensor. That would be something. Hell it could be some variant of the sensor in the RED which is rumored to be from Canon and KNOWN not to be from REDs sensor team.
  19. Thats fine. R5 clearly is not the right tool for you. I'm not trying to sell you on the camera. I just shared my experience using it in the conditions I have so far encountered.
  20. I'll give it a pass since it is the A7S series of "sensitive" cameras from Sony. You simply have to shoot at 12800 with ND. Now, if they did that with the A7IV then there would be something to complain about. I had a dual gain with the GH5S, and while helpful for that camera, I started to become annoyed with messing around with hitting one of the native gains––especially when you had to stop ISO down and add a faster lens. I much prefer a linear gain curve and just applying de-noise in post if needed. Very predictable. I like Canon's/ARRI DGO approach better.
  21. On a $1700 M1 MBP. 8K RAW Lite included when playback mode set to "performance" in FCP. Premiere has garbage performance about anyway you slice it. This has been my experience as well. R5 has been a great camera after FW 1.3.1. 8K RAW is an awesome tool and it looks great! I use it to fake camera movement in a 4K timeline for select shots. I have not once been kicked out of 4KHQ mode or RAW Lite mode. I shot a mix of video and stills all day last Sunday—mostly 4KHQ but several 2-5 minute 8K RAW Lite clips. Camera was turned off for 5-8 mins at a time in-between taking stills or video (left on tripod or in my hand). The time remaining counter did not dip below 15 mins at any point in the day. I remember seeing it at 15 mins remaining at one point...I turned off the camera, walked and scouted around for 15 mins turned on the camera and the timer said 25 mins. Ambient temperature was 77F and dipped to 74F after a freak thunderstorm. R5 is one of the best hybrid cameras out there right now with C-Log 3 and 8K RAW. I don't know why people are complaining about it. Buy the right tool for the job. You have tons of great options: C70, FX6, FX3, R3? (perhaps), S1H, even S5. Totally agree. It's beyond stupid it isn't there in a $2500 R mount camera.
  22. I think it’s pretty clear the main processor and DSP become pretty toasty on the R5. The CFExpress heat is a contributing side factor as well. But please don’t buy the R5 thinking you will make it into a 8K C500 (Unless you are @Matt Perks) You are buying the wrong camera. We have a masochist here lol.
  23. Any tidbits about possible sensor? Sony doesn’t have a 24MP MFT sensor listed on their website. So perhaps it’s a custom ordered design from Panasonic and JIP. I think the internal ND feature would make it stand out, especially if they can keep the G9/S5 form factor. I’m still on the hunt for a smallish camera that shoots 4K with good AF. If it has internal ND and much improved AF It would jump to the front.
  24. I can see your point. We are also up to 6 months away from a potential release and they were clearly teasing that there is more surprises. I would want to hope those surprises are big ticket items like internal ND or internal RAW or both. I find internal RAW less likely than an internal ND. They seem to be all in on external RAW options. DFD AF could be workable if they can get it to work at 24/30fps as well as it does at 50/60fps. Hopefully the new processor and faster scanning sensor will allow them to sample more and achieve more accurate adjustments with less pulsing. There is also no known 24MP MFT sensor from Sony out there at the moment so we don't even really know what sensor they could possible be using.
