    Panasonic GH6

I disagree. I think there still is life in M43. The current releases from Sony and Canon underscore the fact that the majority of FF mirrorless cameras are not bulletproof for production work. Panasonic is slotted in between black magic and the higher end offferings from Canon/Nikon/Sony. I think they proved with the S1H that they made the right decision in form factor and including a fan and they have also proven they can deliver the image. S1H footage is beautiful. If they can close the gap with black magic while improving on their existing AF technology (or scrapping it for something new) then they offer something much different then black magic in well-built, weather sealed, reliable, camera bodies. Something BM struggles with. I think BM puts out an amazing image, but for the fact that I have to put my camera away for light weather conditions (not to mention their track record on reliability) BM doesn’t give me what I want. The biggest hurtle is convincing people the DoF and marginal lowlight increase (in most shooting conditions) is worth the trade for typically what M43 offers. A competent Peter McKinnon brand ambassador wouldn’t hurt either. Panasonic has a terrible track record with marketing and telling people about their products!
  2. Damage control begins at 4:45. No one is sweeping the Sony overheating under the rug. It’s there in certain conditions. Much less so than the Canon.
  3. Clearly they should stick to entry level DSLRs and ride their good name 🙃 This is another case of cripple hammer gone to far to protect a cinema line that is in another completely different market. When will they learn?

    Panasonic GH6

Now that Canon and Sony have played their video hand with the R5/6 and A7SIII (Sony still has a A7IV in their sleeves) respectively, the ball as been kicked—no absolutely belted—into Panasonic’s court. Panasonic has been absolutely silent either twirling their thumbs in worry or rubbing their hands in anticipation. Besides the very vague rumors is there anything more concrete out there about future products from them, wether MFT or FF? I can see Panasonic competing with the A7S fairly easily if they sort out their AF. It’s not a stretch seeing them deliver a MFT camera with oversampled 4K up to 120p quite easily. The Z-Cam E2M4 is doing 160FPS 4K at 13 stops DR on the same sensor Family as the GH5S/P4K. With a newer Sony STARVIS 4/3 sensor and upgraded internals with those ever so practical Panasonic focused design we may see a another leap mirrorless technology from them. Really hoping we will get some more info with @Andrew Reids upcoming interview with them.
  5. So somehow the product defects were not caught in the final design and usage stage at Canon? Nope not buying it. They thought they could release this as is and get away with it. It didn’t work. You literally just need to turn the camera on and do absolutely nothing and see the overheating problem! Apparently Canon doesn’t even use their own cameras. They are probably desperately going back to one of the prototypes that incorporated proper heat management and then silently getting that camera into production. Further, the existence of that stupid Tilta cooling monstrosity tells us that Tilta at least knew about the overheating and designed a product for it. And they did it before the camera was even released! How long does it usually take to design something like that. 3 months minimum from conception to design to prototype to finalizing parts manufacturing. Probably longer. Something smells.
  6. TEC are extremely inefficient in cooling. 10-15% efficient compared to compressor based cooling (ac, refrigerators). There is a reason this shit isn’t used to cool technology in PC for example. So say it does help with overheating. You need a battery to power it and big one at that. Its the law of thermodynamics. No way around it sorry to say. But go ahead. But the R5. Strap this cooler on the back and shoot away and see if you like taking your slick $4000 camera and turning it into so piece of junk Frankenstein machine.
  7. GAS can be a bitch. You have a great camera in the S1H. Incredible underrated and overlooked because it doesn’t have headline grabbing AF. Beautiful image. My GH5S surprises me still and I enjoy filming with it always We can hope Panasonic surprises us and fixes those problems with GH6, S2, S2H or whatever they do.
  8. From what I have seen you can pull back 3 stops overexposure without much problem. Expose for 18% grey and you have a lot of dynamic range, although noise in shadows so I guess overexposed a bit to kill the noise
  9. Yes the tilta cooler is beyond ridiculous. Buy a sports car but then you need to cut a whole in the bonnet for a fan to drive it more than 20 miles down the road. Stupid.
  10. Damn, imagine if that had ProRes RAW or BM RAW internal and didn’t need an external recorder.
  11. Pre-order musical chairs! But who cares! Let people spend their money the way they want to. @Andrew Reid we need a new camera challenge to change things up around here.
  12. No for video. It isn’t a true eND either as it just does a composite photo blend to fake it. Im talking about a real eND that’s in Sony cinema cameras.
  13. This is one thing I think the S1H pretty much nailed. The color. I really really hope we get something similar on a GH camera. They are so very close for me to basically delivering the perfect camera. They just have to tick that AF box. There Still seems to be a door for them after these latest releases. With pretty clear targets: unlimited recording, oversampled 4K120p, and AF. That pretty much it. 8K, 6K, internal RAW, would be icing.
  14. So where is all this glorious GFX 100 footage?
  15. Which is a good result. So what made Dan Watson test give different results?
  16. Did you use your, “Oh let me take a photo and your secretly recording them technique while your seemingly fiddling with your camera controls?”
  17. Yes. Until they release something that has consistent AF results and allows people to directly compare it to Sony, Fuji, or Canon and come away with at least a favorable impression I find it hard for Panasonic to stay competitive in the eyes of a consumer. They increasingly narrow their target audience.
  18. Dans overheated. Kai’s overheated in direct sun. Gerald said he didn’t have a problem. Tony said he couldn’t get it to overheat. B&H used it in direct sun and didn’t have a problem. Potato Jet recorded 40 mins in a room. Put it in a 104 degree oven and it lasted 13 minutes directly after the 40. So we have wildly different temperature results. R5/6 seem to overheat more consistently problem is it’s consistently worse with a huge recover time so bad you might as well try again tomorrow.
  19. Because it’s mostly subjective. With a strong enough codec you can make any image you want.
  20. But if you have the budget for a focus puller why aren’t you using a proper cinema camera with RAW and all bells and whistles? These smaller mirrorless cameras are most likely to be used with one camera man, with a lighter setup, maybe on a gimbal, or in the hands of someone on the back of a moped or motorcycle catching a second angle or a tricky shot.
  21. He says he is in the video. Ask him.
  22. It’s amazing what YouTube Compression does to videos. That water would have been turned into seizure inducing mush. Also, It seems people just like to be mad about gear. I’m guilty of it as well. But lots of A7SIII footage looks good. Certainly better than what we had before in mirrorless form. A7SIII will be another watershed moment for Sony. Seems like they fixed a lot of things that received feedback on. This should be commended.
  23. Easily fixed with a 2 second color wheel adjustment.
  24. Gerald’s video was excellent. Basically you don’t have to worry much at all about ISO performance except at 6400. It has more dynamic range at 12800 than the R5 has at base ISO 😳 A solid 13 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 with s-Cinetone colours using S-Log3 Sgammut 3. Awesome. AF performance is top notch. I trust Gerald and if he is ordering two and cancelling his C300II order than it must be good. He makes long form content where he stand sin from of the camera for hours. So he must feel confident in its overheating performance in a studio.
  25. This right here is why Panasonic needs to get their AF act together or they will go the way of the Dodo.
