Show me a phone with dof thing on VIDEO, I don’t care about DOF effect on photos, I want it on VIDEO

Yeah its not a feature available in video. So again I see DOF as a big thing. Dealing with M43 DOF is one thing but when you go to a sensor less then half the size it gets annoying. Phone cameras can only go so far as eventually they get too big and who wants to carry around a huge phone, they are already too big.

Not gonna disagree that the GM lenses are costly.

But coming from Panasonic, the Leica 12mm f/1.4 cost me roughly $1,300 and weighs in at about 12 ounces.

The Sony 24mm f/1.4 will cost $1,400 and weighs just around 16 ox.

The Olympus 45mm f/1.2 Pro, my favorite m43 lens, cost me $1,200; the Sony 85mm f/1.8 cost $600, and on the a7 III is actually lighter than the GH5 combo.

And the difference in price between the prized Voigtlander m43 lenses and their FE mount lenses is not very great either.

But the numbers, bodies and lenses can all be shuffled around and we'd get different results each time.

Yeah M43 gets expensive as they have to make those extremely fast lenses to compensate for the sensor. I am more of a fan of APSC.

For me M43 only works that well with cameras like the GH5S where you can boost the ISO so you don't need super fast lenses. Not to say the GH5 isn't a great camera but its very limited in low light compared to other bigger sensors of the S.

  3. Its really about lenses not bodies. I like big bodies but not big lenses.

I just used a Sony A7III for a shoot the other day. Definitely a nice camera. Menus are trash but all you have to do is custom set the buttons and you are good to go for the most part. Lenses are all huge though and super expensive, native ones at least.

Agreed, but they need both smaller and larger bodies coming out at a lower price point. Hovering around $2K for bodies will be tough to justify unless they have vastly better features compared to full frame at similar prices. At lest Olympus has the appeal of PDAF if they bother putting it in more competitively priced cameras.

On another note: Panasonic states they will NEVER (probably a bit exaggerated but..) abandon m43. https://www.43rumors.com/panasonic-we-will-never-give-up-on-mft-because-70-of-the-system-camera-market-is-not-full-frame/

That said, I have just bought my first EF lens that will for now be adapted to my G9 (a sweet 120-300 f2.8!) - along with some adapters and a canon teleconverter. I'm not sure I will buy more m43 lenses, because I have come to realize size doesn't bother me (and I have been buying fast glass to compensate for small sensor anyway). Eventually I will probably try out Sony FF or L-Mount, though I see myself keeping a lot of my m43 equipment anyway. There are still times when the size comes in handy, and no arguing the cameras (like the G9) are very good.

If Olympus puts PDAF in one of their cheaper cameras, I'll definitely buy it. PDAF combined with their amazing IBIS is a killer combo.

I need some help here.. today I did more filming, on a lake from a boat. now I have 3 days of shooting material but I can't edit it on my laptop.

On laptop I have resolve 15 , I am now struggling to make it export complete timeline with all footage in DnX 10 bit 1080p, so at least I can edit something, but I am getting several crashes and GPU error 11 from Resolve.

I should use my main editing PC, but I have  resolve 14 on that and haven't had time yet to learn how to backup all my 2018 projects before making upgrade, I'm scared of losing everything if I don't do it right.

What do you guys use to transcode on windows machines? up to now I never had the necessity  cos I always worked with 1080p h264 footage.

Prores works better then DNXHD for me. I think there might be a DnxHD plugin you can install for windows tho.

The Olympus OM-D EM10 III is not a new camera. It's been on sale at least a year. It was the last new camera that Olympus shipped. It has the advantage of being much smaller & cheaper than a FF or APS-C mirrorless. Sadly the size advantage is not shared with the high end MFT cameras (GH5/OM-D EM1 II/G9 etc).

Olympus need to forget about protecting sales of the $2K OM-D EM1 II & put their 20MP sensor, latest IBIS & 4K video in an OM-D EM5 III High end large MFT are doomed. It's only smaller lighter cheaper MFT cameras that will sell now.

I prefer bigger bodies myself though I understand the appeal. Big bodies with big batteries and small lenses.

The vast majority of hobbyists and vloggers will get better results with a GH5/S or XT-3 than the 4K Pocket. Just like the vast majority of them got better results with a GH3, 5D3 etc than the original Pocket and the endless ‘organic retro lut’ grades that abounded with that camera. Although Blackmagic are trying to aim this camera at a broader market that the Ursa 4.6k/Pro, I don’t think it is the right solution for people who don’t use Davinci in their workflow.

BM have tried to simplify things for users with the Gen4 colour science but they overestimate the average person’s interest in correctly white balancing (even in post), using more than one node, appropriate lift/gamma/gain and selective sharpening etc. The fact that this camera has a much higher quality ceiling than everything else under $3k doesn’t mean it will play out that way in most situations.

It is in that tricky space between being able to cut seamlessly with an ARRI or Ursa Mini Pro(which looks fantastic with Gen4 colour) and looking potentially worse than consumer cams.

I don't know people tend to grade GH5 and Sony footage really poorly too and it often comes out worse then BM footage because neither camera has that great of color to begin with and the codecs are more limited.

You make a very good point, but then you are getting away from native lenses, and particularly Panasonic can't focus it own native lenses worth crap, let alone a Nikon or Canon lens on a SB. Sure MF works fine and that is a plus. But then there are plenty of cheaper Cine lenses that are already fast and wide with a MFT mount.

But the draw of a small, light camera has gone out the door since the Sony A7 came out. Most good Panasonic bodies for video are as big as DSLR's anymore. Even the G9 is a Moose. I can take my A7s and put my 55mm f2.0 Super-Takumar on it and be as small as nearly any m4/3 camera. And I can set it to say f5.6 at infinity and never have to touch it focus wise unless I am taking shots of really close stuff.

But yeah the new Olympus EM10 mk III does seem like a good option for the money I can't argue about that camera. I am not saying m4/3 is useless at all. It is I am just not going to buy any new ones or lenses anymore. I would go the Fuji X-T3 route now over m4/3. I personally don't see the advantage they have now, the GH5, GH5s is an exception on the video side, unless you are into birding, sports. Then something like the Oly 300mm, or the Panny 100-400mm on a EM1 mk II makes a lot of sense, at least to me.

I really don't care about full frame or any of that sensor stuff.

To me the latest M43 sensor seen in the GH5S is all I need. Only problem is nobody has done anything proper with it. Panasonic won't put a phase detect system in and there color science isn't really my cup of tea. The Pocket 4k is amazing but again no phase detect auto focus.

The Z cam E2 is pretty amazing specs wise. 4K 120fps without a huge crop. Their color science is iffy though and they don't have phase detect auto focus.

For me as long as M43 can't stay ahead of the others specs wise I'll be interested. If not its a waste of time. Right now they are dragging behind.

I just looked up on You Tube at footage on the mk III and on average it looks no better to me than any modern Smartphone footage, other than maybe low light stuff. Now the video Andrew did was damn good, but he could have damn near done that with his cellphone also. I just don't see it. I'll stay with my iPhone X. Like I said in another thread, I just don't see most m4/3 cameras anymore as a great buy.

And I don't know how long this thing has been out, but this is one hell of a Gimbal for a phone. And it is cheap and light. Pretty amazing. I think I will buy one.

    https://tiffen.com/steadicamvolt/

Depth of field, low light, and dynamic range are all pretty significant for video. Its like saying there is no advantage over an m43 camera and full frame, cell phone sensors are still very small.

There are already tests online and over at DPReview showing the difference in high ISO performance between the X-T2 and X-T3. Most seem to agree that the increase in performance outweighs the slight loss of low light ability if I remember correctly. Check out the DPReview video I posted above.

The results showed it had a little more noise but there was more detail in the image and less color shift if any.

I'd say nikon is the best option for the future seeing as they have nothing to protect. They are the only ones who are offering a full frame 4k package with a broadcast codec (all be it external). Right off the bat their video af is seemingly as good as canon's. Their lenses also show a commitment toward video with breathless focusing. It certainly seems 4k60 and 10 bit internal will be on the next gen models. Plus for the z6 the entry point is still low if you have nikon glass. If you are getting into sony you are priced out pretty soon.

Say what you want about sony but they have given us the same crappy old codec and the same crappy old color science. I think its clear to anyone they are protecting their cine cameras. Canon ditto, but at least there you can get a good image out of them and the autofocus is nice.

Well with the Sony A6700 having internal 10bit 422 up to 4k 60p and 1080 240fps, we could see something very special in the A7S3. Sony has updated their color science in the A73, so it could be even further improved in the A7S3 and the A7000.

I am with you in general on Sony colors though and everything. Exactly why I switched to Fuji from panasonic and have never really went the Sony route(besides a brief affair with the A6300)

This was shot on the X-T2 with the 18-55mm, entirely handheld except for the wide shot that shows the full house. It was also before the AF updates.

That looks really good. I am trying to decide whether to get the 18-55 or save up for an 18-135. I liked the short too, colors look really nice.

Crop in 4K60 is 1.18x, the 1.25x crop is the sports finder mode for 30fps stills shooting. Also just FYI, the 120p mode is 1.28x crop.

Quite different. X-T2 has no crop in all 1080p mode including 120p. 1.18x crop in all 4K framerates.

X-T3 has no crop in 1080p up to 60fps, then 1.28x crop in 100/120p. (very likely to be supersampled from the crop area, the images are aliasing free). No crop in 4K up to 30fps, then 1.18x in 50/60p.

    Thanks for clarifying. Even better.

Is the video crop factor different from an X-T2 to the X-T3?

I ask because I got a graphite X-T2 and the battery booster not long ago on the $500 off deal +15% eBay + eBay Bucks deal.

I like it, I am testing anamorphic taking lens on my anamorphic rig to see how wide I can go.

I find in video mode I can use the Minolta Rokkor 40mm and my B&H Kowa 2x using the Metabones Minolta Speedbooster.

MUCH wider than my GH5 EOS Metabones 0.64XL Speedbooster and EOS mount Minolta PG Rokkor 58/1.2 plus B&H Kowa 2x setup.

Yep same as XT2 at least in 24 and 30p. 1.5 up to 4k 30p and 1.75 up in 4k 60p and 1080 120p. Even cropped it has a large field of view then the GH5.

After playing with it today, and really enjoyed he Fuji feeling, here’s why I prefer to wait an upcoming X-h2 :

    - The battery is weak ; 43mn in 4k recording.
    - No Ibis. Even If Idon’t find the A7iii one relevant, it’s quite usefull to avoid micro jitters.
    - No flip screen. I know... it’s a youtuber or vloger thing. Well, not really. It’s really useful when you are a one man crew, and don’t want to deal with an external monitor.
    - Cause I don’t like h265 codec at high bitrate, a 4k50 10bit 422 in h264 would be nice.
    - Crop Factor ; 1.53 + 1.25 in 4k50 is too much for my taste.

I really think the X-t3 is a fantastic Cameras, but I also believes that a lot of these above will be fixed in their next camera.

The battery should be better, but I doubt it will have a flip screen and the crop factor will be the same. I also think it will have the same H265 codec.

  15. Can you post an example of video with the 18-55. Curious to see the stabilization. I will definitely buy one if its decent. IBIS is nice, but honestly I was happy with the OIS on my Sony A6300, if it can match that I'd be really happy.

I'll definitely be converting the H265 to prores.

  16. Yeah there are already reported lock up issues on the XT3, though it seems a simple battery in and out does the trick. That could be annoying if its rigged up on a gimbal or something though.

This cameras should match the GH5S in low light, with NR. I don't think you'll see any RAW camera that doesn't need NR at high ISO's. Not saying a full frame wouldn't do better but even slog on the A7SII can be noisy.

  17. Looks like I was right, more then matching the Fuji, beating it (in some ways).

That said, its too expensive for me. I was going to wait to see what comes out next but I am now going to bite the bullet and buy the XT3, don't think anything else is going to match it as far as  what I need.

When BM first got into camera market they had excuses for 'bad behaviour' such as unfinished cameras being released after long delays with the contents of a mouse's dinner behind the mount cap. I am not sure I want to go through it again. Such obvious BS.

Why sacrifice EVERYTHING nice about something like a GH5 or X-T3, for JUST RAW? What is it doing for you that 10bit LOG doesn't? Let's get a reality check before people burn their fingers.

I need to talk to BM and as respectfully as I can tell them to really think about the way they are handling this camera release...from design, to manufacturing, to shipping, to even marketing, it's all flawed and off-putting.

I agree with you on that. I don't see how its advantageous for them to release something before its ready.

As to 14 bit raw vs 10 bit 422 or 420, I don't think everyone needs it. But some people do or at least want it. To me its just an amazing feature. Expensive cameras like RED do 14 bit not 1000 dollar pocket cameras.

  19. 11 minutes ago, Alex Uzan said:

Actually, I have no interest in the EosR, but was asking myself since I already have an A7iii and the Gh5, and after using a XT3 this afternoon, felt in love with it’s ergonomics.

But 1.78 crop for 4k60 is difficult to accept, when you already have the two cameras above.

Yeah its not too bad though since I am so used to shooting on the GH5. Its the same crop as the GH5S though.
