  1. So the R still has freezing problems. Has to be at least my 4th copy in a year. I told my cousin I would get video of her walking down the aisle at her wedding yesterday, since they only had a photographer. I was using a top level SD card & recording 4K all-i etc. I recorded her husband walk out, then the camera wouldnt stop recording for 30 seconds. My cousin comes out, the camera wouldnt respond to touch focus changes and wouldnt start recording for about 15 seconds. It finally started recording as she was halfway to the alter and the AF wasnt working, hurry and switched to manual (peaking wouldnt pop up). Got her in focus, but reviewing the footage, there were multiple dropped frames. After that clip, I went to record again with just 1080p, it was racking focus so slow, took about 7 seconds to get back on track. Stopped that recording and started again right before they exchanged vows, then the camera worked fine the rest of the night after that... except the AWB was kinda shit & has been on this copy (none were as good as 1DX II). This camera isnt as reliable in AF vs. the 1DX, dont even risk it if you need the shot. It will work great in testing, but shooting all night, it failed at least 30% of the time. Basically, I would never rely on this camera for anything professional (events). Even if you are setup for manual focusing. I posted last year that when testing this camera, it would randomly stop autofoucsing, but would look like it still was, until you tried moving the AF point. I think it doesnt have enough processing power & their programming for the camera isnt optimised well enough. I might still keep it for just photos, annoying.
  2. Not sure what you're saying, because it works continuously (eye AF) during a video recording. It's worked now in every mode I've used. It will revert to face/object tracking if they get really far away or turn around.
  3. It now has Eye Tracking AF in video and it works really really good.. I am excited for when they actually release a pro model one day. Hopefully it will have Clog 2
  4. My pocket 6k raw footage looked better in resolve than premiere. Not sure why, but it does.
  5. After having seen what they have done to the last 3 sony camera releases, I know why they haven't released the a7siii. They won't risk any cannibalization to their cinema cameras now. I don't see this camera ever coming out now tbh, unless internal politics change. Wrong, I have seen a huge amount of 1D cameras used by pros for video since 2012.
  6. I don't know if they changed the AWB in a firmware since last year, but my new copy is terrible in that regards. The AWB on the 1DX II was the first camera that I didn't have to even bother setting my WB for, it always nailed it. The EOS R was decent, but not quite as good as the 1DX. This new copy sets everything really blue 95% of the time, doesn't matter what priority mode. Anyone else had this? I'll just have to spend extra time checking WB, or just not shoot video on this at all.
  7. I couldn't find much info on the new RF 24-70 2.8, they said it had very quiet AF, but I usually don't believe manufacturers material. In photo mode, with servo enabled, it did make a tiny bit of noise. Then I put it in video and wow... I can't hear it at all, even when doing extreme focus distance changes. I didn't notice any focus breathing either. It was also very fast and accurate, I slowed it down in the movie af setting, looks smooth. Canon really does know how to make damn good glass, hopefully they make their pro hybrids in the next two years ?. I use this camera mostly for photos and it does very well, especially after they did that firmware update, that got rid of sensor banding when recovering shadows. I'll likely get the Komodo and use that with this RF glass and my other EF glass + variable ND adapter. At least until Canon finally puts out a worthy hybrid, which I estimate won't be until fall 2022. I gave up on the a7siii and I think Blackmagic did a great job on the pocket 4k/6k, but it just has too many drawbacks for me right now. I think those are awesome for people really rigging them out with a huge external battery and monitor etc. That just doesn't fit in my backpack when I am going deep into the backcountry. Update: I just tried the tracking in video mode and it surprisingly did really good. It was unusable last year.
  8. They will have small gigapixel cameras before I die & no doubt they will pixel bin it down to 12k for you
  9. You're like my ex GF, cant admit when you were wrong & will fight to the death over it
  10. You mean the 2 fps burst mode when using tracking on the eos r? lol
  11. I should have another EOS R at the end of the week. I have sent back a few of them because: First copy was a launch model and repeatedly froze and you could barely recover 1 stop in the shadows without seeing colored horizontal banding that was random. Second copy the continuous AF (video) would stop working, but looked like it was; had to turn off and on to make it work again. Third copy I had more freezing issues and a stuck pixel. They definitely are not built to the same standard as my 1D cameras, but they have actually fixed a lot through firmware updates. It is a very good camera for photos with some 1080p video, or locked off 4k. I use it for 90% photos. The eye AF wasn't terrible before, it just didn't update the box on your screen very accurately (still nailed shot). Now, it fixes that, plus lets eye AF work from a long ways away. The 1080p 24-30p actually looks really clean, but the 60p is muddy imo. 4k handheld with an IS lens (RF 24-105) can't even be stabilized in post because of the high RS of the camera. The lens IS isn't good enough to not stabilize in post, at least on that lens. I just ordered the new RF 24-70 f/2.8L, i'll see if that IS is any better. Honestly, I found that the 1080p with the lowest digital IS setting actually works damn good. You don't ever have any weird jerky/twitchy or sticky moments like you do with optical/ibis stabilization. I walked around NYC with a sigma 35mm and the digital IS on and it cropped in less than what warp stabilizer usually does and it looked nearly gimbal smooth. I linked the vimeo video last year, but a Canon rep/engineer or someone of that nature, demoed the 1080p S35 mode in the EOS R. He said that it super samples in the S35 mode, I have tried it and it looks very impressive. The FF 1080p on the camera looks good as is.
  12. I heard they still haven't implemented touch screen function to the new sony cameras outside of tap af? .....
  13. I have wondered for some time why it is in 20px and not 12-14 etc? I know some sites will have your browser auto zoom in, but it always gets me here. I go to zoom out in settings and see its at 100% lol.
  14. Was up the canyon filming and a semi flew down a dirt road out of nowhere in the forest lol. Quick screen grab
  15. By the time they release the a7siii, it will just be called the a7siv
  16. @gt3rs It is just a 1.3x crop. The mark iii supposedly will be 6k from prototype leaks, guess we will see. I don't know if I will ever buy another dslr though lol. Knowing Canon, they wont make a really good mirrorless until the mark iii is 4 years old. So... 2024 we will finally have a good hybrid mirrorless from Canon haha.
  17. People who bought the 1DX II in 2016 are probably still feeling pretty good, wish I hadn't sold mine. It accidently got ran over by a snowmobile and fell out of a moving car and still worked fine lol. It is a big heavy bitch though.
  18. Thanks @JordanWright I will give that a try as well. Does anyone know why the BRAW highlight rolloff slider does nothing in Resolve? I saw some forum posts of people saying it didn't do anything for them and that was 2015 lol.
  19. I enjoyed the told ya so on the a7riv and a6600, but this is getting canon level sad now.
  20. Here is a screen grab from more even lighting, less direct into the sun. I also converted it to ARRI colorspace and LOG C, Then used their LUT. Few tone and saturation adjustments etc. Converting it to ARRI stuff got rid of many of my highlight complaints, it really helped.
  21. Where do you get that exact screen? I just have used color space transformation from effects on nodes. I don't have a ton of experience in resolve. I haven't seen the roll off settings shown here yet.
  22. Not sure how to feel about this camera yet. I have spent at least 10 hours with it so far (including post production testing). Few observations: Annoyances Dynamic range is pretty bad with highlights BRAW looks dead in Premiere vs Resolve (colorspace looks wrong). I would have to edit in Resolve, which has been very buggy IMO Somehow my focus peaking is back focused(Sigma 18-35), not sure how or if you can adjust it Highlight rolloff and highlight recovery doesn't seem to work in Resolve with BRAW, but does a little in Premiere? BRAW surprisingly still fell apart more than I expected when adjusting luminosities, hue curves etc. Batteries obviously die in about 24 min Positives If the lighting is about perfect, the image looks great BM colorescience doesn't require much work for my personal taste. I can get a good looking shot just by adjusting curves if WB was set right. RAW is nice to adjust certain settings with later Camera doesn't draw as much attention as even my 1DX II did The 50 & 60p 6K stabilizes really well, I don't see a need for a tripod if you shoot expecting a really small crop in post. Plenty of resolution to do fake, post production camera moves, stabilize, zoom etc. Image looks very clean, virtually noiseless I shot in 5:1, Film (DR), 6K 50p and 2:4:1 60p The camera is obviously capable of getting some very nice footage. I am still unsure if it will be for me though. I will try under exposing a little more and see how it handles it, but the highlight recovery was better on the XT3, 1DX II and EOS R somehow. I seriously could only recover what feels like half a stop of highlights, where I have recovered a ton on the other cameras mentioned, and those aren't marketed as a cinema camera. That is one main reason that makes me rethink carrying this camera and dealing with things like; more weight, no good AF, bad battery life etc. If I can get similar dynamic range, with a much smaller camera that doesn't have the drawbacks I just mentioned, plus be able to take pro grade photos as well. I liked the XT3, but it was much noisier and I don't care for the lenses there. Also don't like being tied down to Resolve, I don't know why Premiere (with BM plugin) is looking much more lifeless, as if the colorspace is wrong (checked multiple times). If anyone knows the solution to some of the things I mentioned, I would be happy to hear. I am not trying to bash the camera, just learning more about it and hoping the negatives can be worked around. Overall I do like it, just not sure if it is worth the price and few downsides I mentioned. I do much more run n gun style. Here is just a quick screen grab to show the color I mentioned, I didn't do much (dropped ISO from 400 to 320, applied BM 6K Extended LUT etc). I don't expect many cameras to have enough DR to handle this type of shot, but I think the leafs look cool to the right. The rolloff seems nice. I have a bunch of other shots where I am shooting at golden hour with the sun way off frame (shooting almost north and sun is west), still blowing out highlights like you see on her hair here in an extreme setting.
  23. What I did could not be packaged up into a 3D LUT. It is possible that you are partially blind, not sure. I don't think many people know about, or are very proficient at adding multiple artificial light sources, masking and blending them to look natural. It's ok, I didn't know about it two years ago. I also mentioned that what I did, was very crude in comparison to what is out there. I don't even know the extent of it, I wasn't seeking it out. I was just showed some proprietary software while on a trip to our devs HQ. The average videographer has always been what, 10 years + behind what hollywood can do? I am not going to try to educate you; it doesn't seem like you are the type of person that learns easily.
  24. This is a screenshot of before and after from what I did in just premiere; mavic air footage. That is mind numbingly basic compared to what I am talking about. Our SF dev team showed us some stuff they had built where it was actual computational videography, from a camera capturing multiple exposures at once etc. It has insane highlight rolloff (which is what you are trying to describe) and dynamic range, way beyond anything I have ever seen. Hell, the iphone a few years ago started doing something like that, I won't be surprised when the camera companies finally catch up in that regards. We specialize in AI imaging (Hyperspectral) for industrial applications, and have whole systems running on their own, that normally took a whole crew before. These people we worked with to develop our software, also showed us stuff outside of our industry. They obviously were using AI, to add lighting from these multiple exposure cameras. It looked like something you would see from a behind the scenes pixar movie, but it was footage shot of real people. I don't really care if you do not believe me, you'll see in 4 years minimum, what I just mentioned. It reminded me of something like this, but you aren't spinning around a 3d model. Not in the demo I saw. It was however, more powerful in creating natural looking light that was aesthetically pleasing. Quick lighting done in Premiere last year
