Yes, Panasonic bullied me back in grade school... but he was known as Sonic back then but it left a horrendous memory deep inside my psyche and the only way for me to get my dignity back is to make earth shattering inquiries about the GH5...

But I never said everybody is dumping their GH5. I said a lot of people seem to be moving onto other cameras. I also questioned if Panasonic makes or made a profit on the GH5. We recently learned that Olympus loses money on every camera they sell in the US. We also know that Olympus sells more cameras than Panasonic... so...

Just a conversation online. I am actually thinking about buying a GH5, so I have no ill will or intention.

I don't think he was referring to you.

I think he was referring to the legions of a holes that pop up across the internet claiming m43 will be whipped out by smartphones or FF mirrorless! Honestly photography & videography trolls are worse than just about any other type of troll I've encountered.

Its a 1DX with 4K and it was first. Lets just try to live with that instead of trying to reshape history with strange rules just to make a point ;)

(Btw, I sold my A7sii and could buy a 1DC with money to spare.)

O please, It was ridiculously expensive when launched if you wanted 4k video.

March 2012 1DX $6,799.00 (suggested retail body only)

    May 2014 GH4  $1,699.99

I’m sorry, but these never-ending remarks about everyone dumping their GH5 cameras; speculating whether Panasonic is losing money on them; predicting that prices will plummet - is there some personal motive why someone’s been posting absurd comments like these week after week for as long as I can remember?

    Potentail reasons:

    • Fanboyism for a different brand
    • Fanboyism for a different format
    • Feelings of inferiority about ones current gear
    • Incorrect believe that they are being held back by gear that is not the absolute newest available
    • Out of control GAS that needs justification for buying something new
    • cantankerous personality by nature

Outside the bubble of online camera forums, I don't know anybody who has "abandoned" the GH5 for other camera brands. In fact I still know of people who even today in 2018 are buying the GH5, because it is still an extremely relevant and well priced camera.

That's the one thing I think a lot of people fail to realize! for every person you here complaining in a forum there's probably ten thousand that are perfectly happy!

Do you think an expo disk is better than using an X-Rite?

I’ve never used either but I am considering an X-Rite as I progress more into my short films.

I have them both, and in my opinion the Expo-disk is better for setting WB in the camera. It works like a filter,  so all you do is hold it over the front of the lens and set custom wb.
You don't have to worry about holding it perfectly square to the lens to avoid reflections like with an x-rite. You also don't have to worry about targeting the correct swatch on the x-rite from multiple feet away.

For checking/setting wb and color correctness in post an expo-disc is usless, and you need a color checker.

If/when you go to buy a color checker, I's recommend you buy the X-Rite i1 Filmmaker Kit. Yea, its more expensive because the iDisplay pro comes with it, but you will eventually want to calibrate your monitor(s) anyway, and you save $50-$60 buying it as a kit.

here is a cheesy platylist showing how to use an expo-disc!

  6. I did some snooping (web software developer by day) around the feelworld website during lunch, and found the unpublished product page for the FW279S. It looks to still be a work in progress, as introduction says 450 nits while several other spots on the page say 2200.

I also found this company in the Netherlands (i think) that shows it for 499 Euros.

I had the G7 for a while and had a lot of fun with it. I really learned that I was horrible at color grading by owning that camera. Here’s a frame grab from one of my more successful jobs with the G7 and an old Cosmicar 25mm c-mount lens...

Personally, I've found the key to getting good results from lower bit depth / chroma sub sampling cameras, is ETTR, and getting WB spot on in camera. ETTR is cake with zebras, and an expo disc makes setting wb all but idiot proof!

Anyway, I appreciate the sentiment by the OP and as my end of summer GAS calls out to me, maybe I’ll once again explore one of these options instead of dropping thousands of dollars on a new system I don’t really need.

Try a Panasonic G7 4k 8bit 4:2:0 It's an excellent small light camera, and its on sale for just under $500 at B&H right now.

this is a short test clip i shot right after i got the camera.

  9. Man, Feelworld really needs to get their marketing together.

The just posted some photos from their IBC booth.

The F567 is really the FW567, and while it is OLED its only 1280x720, and it's 300 nits, not the 1000 like in the teaser video. Unless someone it trying to play the average brightness vs single pixel peak brightness game.

The FW279 is really the FW279s, but it's at-least 2200 nits like the video claimed.

Still no mention of what video has lut support yet!

According to this test the GH5 looks like it has worse dynamic range than the GH4 in Cine D. It makes sense given the larger pixels.

Does anyone know of any other tests on the subject or have the cameras and feel like uploading some files?

I've been shooting all weekend with the G85 to determine if I should get the G9, the X-H1 or something else. I could go G9 but getting even lower than the already quite terrible DR isn't very exciting.

(I have considered the GH5 wich is way cheaper than the other two, but I need a top LCD. Otherwise I would have just stuck to the G85.)

I would not trust some random YouTuber. Dxo has the gh5 at 13 stops!

Unless there is some type of internal/external Raw or internal ProRes, I don’t really see the point of a FF Panasonic. It seems like they’re grasping at straws here... especially if it doesn’t have IBIS.

They want an 8K consumer camera by the 2020 Olympics the easiest way to do that is with a full frame sensor!

Rumor says they will keep DFD tech with no DPAF. Why on earth would they do that?

If this camera has high mpx + GH5 video specs like 4K60P and 10 bit, it's going to be an absolute killer. But if they keep their shitty AF well it's going to be the dealbreaker. Dont do that Panasonic, dont be so dumb.

them buy something else, I'm so sick of hearing people whine like little babies about auto focus.
