  1. Personally, I do think there are stories that are too complex for a 10-20 minute short, but too simple for a full feature. I will often scour Amazon and Youtube specifically for longer short films from unknown directors/writers. I think there's a sweet spot around 40 minutes.

Would anyone be more willing to click a video that's 80 minutes.. a double feature of two 40 minutes films? Or something like that?

Dunno. I have never used it.
But I'll say personally I always use a wired boom myself.
Although on very rare occasions when I've had a boom op under me then I've handed them a RodeLink Newshooter Kit to use with their boom.

How do you like the Newshooter kit? I got it for this exact reason, but have yet to really try it out on a full day.

If your GH5 camera that you purchased last week is working as advertised, you shouldn't be annoyed or pissed.  If S35 sensor was what you were really after you probably shouldnt have purchased a GH5 last week. :glasses: Just playing along, but honestly... If your new/ish camera is working as advertised, you shouldn't be pissed.

A S35 sensor would a BIG upgrade to the GH line. It's something that I don't think Panasonic would do as <1 year upgrade to their GH5. They've known what the market wants. If a S35 sensor in a GH camera was at all something they were thinking of doing, they would have delayed the GH5's release until they had it ready or would have waited for the GH6. I wouldn't be upset if I were wrong though :)

I believe it's a new camera only. Panasonic is following Sony's footsteps. We have the G9 to compete with Sony's A9 and the new camera if it is called GH5S is to compete with Sony's A7S series.

With the M43 format, the only way to get CLEAN low light video would be with a less megapixel sensor...larger pixels.

I think it might be a misstep for Panasonic to create the three separate lines in this manner. To me it screams being a reactionary move instead of well-thought marketing strategy. Say this new camera will be a heavily video-centric model, the G9 is the heavily photo-centric one, and the GH5 is the hybrid. The problem is that throughout its marketing cycle, the GH5 was presented as a video camera first and foremost, with some talk about the stills features. Remember, the first tease of info about the camera was solely video based: 10 bit 4:2:, 4K60p, and 1080p180. Even the in-person interviews with Matt Frazier and Sean were so heavily leaning on video that stills were barely even brought up. If Panasonic had this 3 camera plan all along, the reps surely would have emphasized the *hybrid* designation more (even if they weren't going to announce other cameras for some months).

It seems disrespectful to consumers of the GH5 for Panasonic to release a substantial updated model so shortly after release. Especially, if this was on their roadmap all along. This would be unlike Panasonic. Therefore I think a likely scenario is an updated model with a few new bells and whistles, but with the bulk of features coming from software. Panasonic will offer these software upgrades to GH5 owners at a cost ~$500.

Less megapixels is certainly not the only way to increase ISO performance. The GH5 is substantially better than the GH1 in low light and it has far more megapixels. Processing power, heat dissipation, and other factors also have a role in ISO performance. The fact that Luke Neumann is posting high resolution anamorphic frame grabs points to the same or a variant of the GH5 sensor.

  5. The more it's discussed the more I think that it will be both a new body and a paid firmware update for existing owners. The timing is just too wrong for a new body with massive hardware updates. It makes more sense for it to have software updates with maybe a little bonus hardware. I like the idea of full V-Log; something has always been a little bit off about V-LogL. Raw would be welcomed, but I doubt its coming.

One theory I have is using the dual card slots in tandem for higher bitrates. The 400 Mbps update is nice, but how about 800 Mbps or more using both slots? Is this possible?

That would be a step in the wrong direction from my point of view. The organic sensor that Panasonic has been developing has the ability to selectively change the sensitivity of individual pixels. This is a much better approach than merely cutting down light for the entire sensor by using an ND filter.

I would like to see some real innovation. I have NDs, as do I would wager most of the GH5 owners here. The assumption seems to be inferred that removing the mechanical shutter has no downsides. Well if the Sony A9 and A7RIII are examples, I can tell you that many have reported rolling shutter problems when using electronic shutter in place of mechanical. Also those cameras seem to suffer from defocus issues when using electronic shutter.

Very interesting info about the organic sensor here. I didn't realize it would have that sort of capability. Short of that though, I do think an electronically-charged, internal ND would be awesome in this little camera. For me that is the last step needed for a GH camera to be considered a full feature video camera, at least as such could be defined today. I do agree that a electronic shutter is not without downsides for still shooting, but this camera is {rumored} to be *very* video-centric. I believe many video shooters would gladly trade a mechanical shutter for internal ND... if this were the actual situation. We'll see soon.

It seems odd timing to release a new GH5s with nothing more than increased lowlight performance, though?

Since I assume the majority of GH5 sales are from video users, it almost seems like they’re killing their own GH5 sales for only $500 more? Unless there is going to be a price drop of the GH5.

This is actually kinda strange marketing and timing. I tend to think there will be a few more features and the price will be $2999. Just enough to warrant a jump in price but not enough to really hurt existing GH5 sales.

I think the new sensor {rumor} will open up a few new possibilities:

    -Better low light performance

    -Better color rendition

    -Better DR?

-Faster sensor readout for higher fps

-and maybe even elimination of rolling shutter

I couldn't agree with you more!  I mean like, triple AMEN! :)   I have never worked with a camera SDK that seemed like it was designed by half-competent developers (unlike the main ML devs).  Indeed, recently I wanted to control Sony cameras.  Did I load up the SDK?  NOPE.  Been down that road, with unanswered questions on life-less forums.  So I installed the USB Camera Remote and used a library that basically does key-stroke pressing on the application's interface.  When it comes to SDKs, all the camera makers are pathetic.

Now this may seem like a tangent, but I want to prove a point.  Adobe Premiere just re-vamped their whole TITLE making process.  THREW OUT THE WHOLE THING.  Now there is a "Graphics" interface.  When you create a title you get bountiful properties and methods in the Graphics pane.  It's been built from the ground up.  Should be perfect, right?  Yet it has everything but the TEXT OF THE TITLE!  In order to change the text of the title you have to click on the "Text" tool on the timeline.  Is the text of a graphic a property of a timeline?  WTF!  It makes me speechless! My brain freezes trying to comprehend how Adobe management could let something like that pass.   It's a KLUDGE of monumental incompetence.  My 2-cents ;)

There are very, very few software developers who have a real talent for programming.  Just like there are very, very few bloggers who have a talent for writing about cameras ;)  The world runs on computers.  There is still a fair amount of managers at Canikon who weren't brought up on computers.  In short, there is a chronic shortage of talent.  If Adobe can't get enough good talent, what hope everyone else?

Look at ML, of the 28,000 members my guess is there are only 50 or so people with hard-core programming skill.  And if more, they don't have the time.  Put another way, I bet 8 out of 10 software guys at Canon don't even understand what the ML devs do.  It's over their head.

@maxotics to further go down this tangent let me just say that I despise the new title workflow. For some reason my computer slows to a crawl when trying to use the new title tool and much of the UI seems like a backwards step. I hope Adobe fixes this soon. I think the parallel you draw here is accurate; often times programmers overlook the user experiences when adding/updating features.

  8. I've had mine since day one and use it for video and photo. Aside from the remarkable video features, this thing is a wonderful stills camera. I shot a wedding this past weekend with it. Had to boost the ISO to 4000 for the reception and it looks fantastic. The AF-C with 225 point AF worked amazingly. Normally I use my Nikon D3s for receptions due to the low light IQ and focussing ability, but the GH5 blew it out of the water focussing-wise.

The site is up and working. It would be unethical to share the LUT, since there is a voluntary contribution for the developers.

Hmm must just be the firewall in my office. I'll try again when I get home. Thanks!
