  1. Just curious. I totally understand wanting specific aspects of a camera to be a certain way and it’s cool to have discussions about it, but do we buy cameras to nitpick at the specs or shoot images? After a while it all becomes negligible. I can’t believe I’ve become the person to say this because I too was “geeking” over camera specs. After years of shooting I come to just use and appreciate the tool. Use the tools that suits your needs.

I don't have enough experience with mini to really say for sure as most cameras either go micro or full. Honestly micro should just be banned 😅

All of the small hdmi ports should be banned on these types of tools. Sigma is calling this a cinema camera, which I agree because the images produced with it are exceptional, but to have non professional inputs on a device like this is an oxymoron. On a similar note, I actually use to think that the port at the side of the fp, used for the flash attachment, was going to be a peripheral port for more professional inputs. Maybe even a power boost to get higher frame rates.

Do you have a micro HDMI clamp on the FP?  On my Z6 I don’t, because I got worried and just unhook it each time I put it in the bag.

Yes there’s a clamp that I purchased from SmallRig when I first received the cameras. I haven’t seen that clamp again on the SmallRig catalog site, which is pretty odd.

  4. I can’t believe that JVC sent out that useless survey asking about features for a potentially new cinema camera. I still don’t understand why they don’t see that, while the cinema camera market is becoming crammed, there is still a niche that they can fill. Hopefully some product manager within their company will realize this fact. Anyways here’s a link to some screen grabs of footage from this slept on powerhouse!

And yes I still use the JVC GYLS300

Understood. Thanks for the answer, and, yes, it gives a beautiful image regardless of it's setting. I only notice when I'm doing specific technical testing with it, nothing in motion. I see something similar when shooting 1080p instead of UHD. Seems to be better to downscale in post if possible.

I guess my question is if it is capable of using the crop zoom function while kicking out a raw signal. I'm sure it is, but I haven't been able to confirm. Not only for the previous concern, but also because I like the ability it gives of "zooming" with primes.

I’m quite sure it does. I will have to check today, when I’m sanitizing my gear.

I really like your setups, especially with the smallrig side handle.

Have you felt the need to drop to 1.3x crop on your fp L to avoid the aliasing similar to 12bit cDNG? I usually shoot 10bit when I need the width (which still looks great) but the raw output being only 12bit I suppose you cannot do this. Gerald complains about the raw output softness of the fp L but it's a sensor speed limitation and not really Sigma's fault.

I'd recommend the original fp for strictly video, but I love my fp L.

Sorry for the delay. I didn’t receive a notification for this post. Regarding your questions, I haven’t noticed any aliasing with 12 bit at all. And with respect to all of the, for the lack of a better term, pixel peepers, those things really don’t concern me. I just ensure that I have the proper composition, exposure and focus. Whatever “artifacts” that are there doesn’t dampen my goal, which is to just create some lovely artwork. Now if I’m experiencing some heavy moire, for instance when I’m downscaling from 4k to HD, then yes I’ll be mindful. However as I mentioned, these “artifacts” don’t bother me.

  7. The Sigma fp series of cameras are very capable. I’m actually thrilled that I’m able to produce expensive images on a budget. This allows me to build out the accessories needed to run a smoother production. Here are some unprocessed screen grabs of a project I’m working on. I’ll be also using these cameras to film a series based on a popular subject within the Hip Hop industry.

Also here’s a link of a comedy skit I filmed for an extremely known TikTok personality who is trying to build up her YouTube channel.

I don’t  follow the popular camera trends and what’s hot, hence my name here AltShoo which is an abbreviated form of Alternative Shooter. This is why I use the JVC-GYLS300 and even though the next camera I’m mentioning  is the most “popular” camera in my arsenal, it’s still not a trendy tool, I own an EVA1.

  8. Gerald’s review of the fp is based off his usage, which is a personal thing and since he’s influential, his personal tastes are passed on to the sheep of the earth.

For my personal needs, this camera exceeds plenty! I had the chance to purchase a BMD12K, Komodo, a GFX100 and a FX9, but decided on a pair of Sigma cameras. A fp and fpL kitted out with some lenses from Irix and Dulens. I also paired them with two Atomos Ninja Vs.

I really watch these YouTubers just to get perspective. I make up my mind by simply testing and knowing what fits the workflow I want to use.

That cinema camera? Those incredible specs are virtually identical to the GH5s, a camera released 2 years ago, with a few added bonuses.

There's no one to blame but Panasonic for the reaction people have on this forum and the Facebook groups I'm in. They've done terrible PR, which seems to be typical for these major camera companies. I can go in the Z-Cam group and ask questions directly of their president but getting some kind of road map for the future is M43 from Panasonic is literally impossible.

I agree wholeheartedly with a lot of ideas and thoughts in this thread, but is it really a surprise with how Panasonic treats its customers? I do believe that Panasonic needs to get with the times and become more transparent with their customers. That goes for all companies from the old guard.

We can look at a company like Z-Cam to understand the benefits of accessibility through social media with almost instant interactions. This is where I think bigger companies will fail in the future if they don’t integrate this type of communication. Still regarding the GH6, wouldn’t it be downright ridiculous for Panasonic to disregard the demand for this product? They have seen continuous success with the GH series. I can’t believe they will stop producing the line because it’s too profitable.

Yea they have FF cameras, but it’s still a new market for them. In the camera world their bread and butter are the Lumix line and it’s MFT ecosystem. It would be disastrous for them if they neglected this fact.

  10. This whole topic is pretty much super speculative. The mft format isn’t going anywhere. There’s a whole eco system that’s been built and maintained for too long. As I said earlier, Panasonic isn’t abandoning it. They just released a MFT cinema camera last year with incredible specs. Most of the contributors here are missing that fact. I’m quite sure the GH6 is soon to be announced. This mark ii business is most likely a streamlined version.

  11. That’s sad and disheartening to hear, but I’m still going to buy their gear because a lot of the tools I have and I’m expected to purchase are literally approved by the camera manufacturer I use. My career depends on these products, which allows me to have a cohesive and efficient workflow.

Regarding the YouTube personalities experiencing this type of behavior from companies, if my future depended on income from being a “creator” and not actually creating content for “real world” clients, I would be gung ho behind this.

Still, I hope that it was just a rogue employee and not the company’s culture because SmallRig doesn’t come across like this. Hopefully his video will bring attention to this issue.

  12. I remember a few weeks back I was talking with Takuma Wakamatsu and I made a suggestion about this very same thing we are looking at. I suggested that he should use the hot shoe accessory input and create an attachment that basically does this, yet have a full hdmi input. He quickly responded with “I can't say anything about future development but I'm considering something. Please looking forward it.” My instincts kicked in and I knew this was happening!

In genuinely excited about this announcement. I actually haven’t felt this excited since JVC released their cinema camera. I’m a really big supporter of underrated yet powerful organizations.

Least fun was the 2 times I tried a gimbal. I really don’t like working with anything more than small(er) cameras if possible and compact lenses. Even my XT3 kit was a bit much by the time I had added: monopod, powerbank, adapter, Sigma 18-35 and tried the Ninja V but it brought me the opposite of joy.

And don’t get me started on sliders...

Less is more to me provided it can do what I need it to do.

Even though i use them, I can not stand gimbals 🤮

  14. Honestly idk how I would feel if it’s a whole new fp. I literally purchased the Sigma fp a week ago with the pl adapter, SmallRig cage, handle, ninja v, the whole shebang! I also have some pl lenses coming in too! Lol.

I’m very interested to see what is in store.

Bringing life back to this thread. I use my mkiii daily. It’s my primary camera. Love it for hybrid shooting with those f1.2 primes. Still haven’t tried the new prores raw feature. Really incredible they added that.

im just a bit scared for the future of the company. I really hope to see a new camera with updated specs like better EVF and newer sensor this year. We’ll see if the new owners handle it well.

I agree. I am also hoping that they decide to step into the cinema market and offer something similar to the box cameras that are starting to proliferate the market. It would be an added bonus to include some of the technology that they are known for into these devices. And although different companies, maybe even continue with and improve on the MFT/S35 sensor system JVC introduced with its LS300.

  16. In regards to BM’s new tech, and this not being a Bayer sensor, the numbers aren’t the same thing anymore. I believe we are in the presence of a major disruption to come. It’s obvious this is going to trickle down into BM’s new devices and will most likely force major players in the game to reassess the price of admission for quality cinematic images.
Sorta reminds me of how one can create Grammy winning music on their laptop/tablet/phone.
