I was speaking specifically ML Raw on the 5D3. But hey whatever you like you like. That's why they make vanilla and chocolate.

I'll never understand why when a discussion of zooms comes up, the question of 'how much reach do you need', never comes up.

With some exceptions, I never considered zooming while shooting to be a good practice. I got into a lengthy discussion with someone on another forum who defended the practice. It's rarely used today in cinema. If you looked at old TV shows and movies, it was used far more frequently back then.

Agree with Fritz. Also, in terms of usable zoom the 12-60 is far more versatile. I used the 12-35 for a few years and the limit on it's use was the zoom range. In terms of the extra stop or so at 35mm, it makes no difference on the GH5 as it is already a couple of stops better than the GH4 I was using. In terms of low light shooting, neither lens is ideal. F2.8 is just as insufficient when pushing things as F4 is so you go to the 25mm 1.4 at that point regardless of what zoom you have. For the ultimate daylight walk around zoom it's probably still the 14-140 for the biggest range on one lens. Not sure how the stabilisation compares but you can see the daylight IQ lacks nothing

You and I both just brought it up...it's the whole reason in my mind for having a zoom...I never zoom while shooting....that would be a dolly or a slider for me....but the freedom of that lens on your camera...

Great job with matching these two cameras...for those preaching the 5D as the holy grail...it's your opinion...nothing but subjectivity there...I remember one critisism of the GH5 being that you can actually match it with the 5D...or have to...lol....well only if that's what you're looking for...I prefer Panasonics image over Canon...what does that mean?...NOTHING....to be exact...just my taste...my preference...just like yours....and it holds the same weight...if the 5D is the image you're loving....happy for you...as I'm happy with my Panny cameras....

    Yes, the GH5 is second.

For sure, the 5D files have much more malleability than 10bit VLog. You can really go to town on Magic Lantern RAW - it's a much thicker file. It's almost pristine (except for ugly shadow noise).

But I think that it is actually a testament to the GH5 that I can do that. And what I've presented here is only the realisation of my preferences. The point that I want to make is that the 10bit 422 files are robust enough to undergo a fair bit of colour correction / grading. To me, the VLog coming from the camera is a "raw" material with massive potential, as the (properly) RAW footage from the 5D3 is a beginning, and not an end in itself. In the main GH5 thread you mentioned that there was a range of quality in the posted videos for the GH5, from video-ish to something more satisfactory. Believe me, if Magic Lantern RAW was accessible to the same kinds of users - and in the same numbers - as the GH5, you'd see a hell of a lot of bad 5D3 ML videos.

Exactly. You need 12 nodes or 20 minutes work to match this with that. But when the groundwork is done, you're in business. Today I made a nice lut that combines the Canon-like colour with a Lightroom film emulation preset. I loaded this into the camera as a monitoring lut and exposed until it looked good in the viewfinder. Came back and slapped the lut on and each shot was perfect. It took as long as it does to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.... with maybe a small WB and curves adjustment beforehand This is the look that I'm into at the moment. In a year's time I might be into something different.

    Big time!

So I originally wasn't going to post this video because I know there are few fans of 4K60p. That's OK, I love it. But since this is a thread on 'focusing excellence', it's entirely appropriate for me to post this. The video was shot yesterday at the Queens Zoo in N.Y. I used a variety of AF approaches (no MF at all), including 1-Area, Tracking AF, CAF and focus lock. The subject and its movement dictated which technique I chose.
Interestingly, the shot of the bear toward the end, is something that's eluded me with both the A6300 & A7Rii. It's so difficult that my wife said, "What's the point, it won't come out". I've taken the same shots of that same bear, and for whatever reason (the dark fur coupled with the bear's movement?), both Sony's would only hold focus for two or three seconds before losing it. In the interest of full disclosure, I did have one GH5 shot of this bear that wound up on the cutting room floor due to a misfocus, but that's still a 50% hit rate for a difficult subject even for PDAF. Everything else I shot was absolutely fine.

For sure. My paid gigs normally use manual focus and focus puller 100% of the time, so focus pulling feature seems more appealing to me than a machine making the decisions on the operator's behalf.
In any case, it is rather possible to use touchscreen focus for gimbal shots. Mobile app can also be of a great help.
To me, this AF minus is absolutely nonsense. I never put my hands on one yet, but I am pretty sure this camera is able to produce proper AF if the operator knows to workaround eventual limitations.
On the other hand, show me 4K/60p coupled to CAF for same price and size.
I guess I wouldn't even consider the AF ticket anyway. Tap to focus is much more reliable.
Horses for courses? To each his/her own? We can't all of us be stuck in the same yellow color, oh yeah :-)

Emanuel, I too have demonstrated that the AF can be used quite effectively, and this is without touch to focus. In the above videos, he certainly didn't use touch focus, but rather the CAF was running on the fly. I've tended to use 1-area AF and find it quite effective. There are many videos out there where people are getting good results.
I also agree with Tony N., the Sony AF is certainly not perfect either. Been there done that. In fact the Sony, more than the Panasonic, would often refuse to focus on a face that filled up 1/2 of the frame, choosing the background instead. Yes, the Sony CAF is better in general, but having used both, I don't think it's that much better, I really don't. I haven't used the A9, so no comments there.
Is the GH5 AF as good as it could be? No. Is the AF a lot better than some think it is? You betcha! Will Panasonic further improve it in the GH5? I'm betting yes.

Anyways, my car can be unable to beat a Ferrari, but if it takes me to wherever the Ferrari or any other takes me, I can still drive it without much further complaints.
No GH5 here yet, but seems pretty enough this AF performance or tap to focus workaround (without mention the focus pulling feature!):
And please don't tell me touchscreen focus is not a valid solution because it is perhaps the best AF way to ever select... AF.
In any camera for any setup. Our brain is surely brighter to handle the job than a machine. Period.
Here's another example that I am not alone on this one:

Mercer, as good as the IBIS was in the G85 (I had it), the GH5's IBIS is even better. I'm not sure if actual physical changes were made to the IBIS or whether it's simply the fact that a larger camera is easier to hold steady. Either way, the IBIS is an incredible pleasure for hand-holding stability.

I've never seen moire as bad with the GH5 as he shows in his video, but I shoot only 4K. Something seems odd though in his video. Toward the end he shoot in 4K50p, and the stutter as he pans is really bad. I'm not sure why that should be, it should present smoother motion. Who knows what transcoding errors he's done too and the video was only uploaded in HD for some reason. Considering my experience with this as pretty much a non-issue, and the rarity of others complaining about it, I don't put a whole of credence in this.
No, webrunner, it's not as bad as he shows. Otherwise we'd be hearing rants all over the internet. It would be right up there with the AF.

    Well it depends really...
I've watched hundreds of YouTube videos but most of them aren't good apart from the likes of Neumannfilms or setup videos.
I have the GH5 and I think it's the best m4/3 and one of the best hybrids. Is it great a blogging? Probably not as AF is the most important part ( and not IQ). But if you like more the documentary style it's amazing. Versatile, small, lots of functions and feature, great IQ and excellent handling.
Also in stills it's a great camera. I used the GH4 before and it sucked in stills due to the horrible AF. Now the GH5 is a relief, nearly as good as the EM1 MKII and with the 300mm F4 you're now able to successful catch birds in flight. Also the 6k Photo mode is very useful.
And one of the most underrated points of the GH5 is the heavily improved image quality and colors.
So, I really like the GH5 - it's a massive improvement from the GH4 in stills and movie.
    B
