Ken Ross got a reaction from Andrew Reid in Panasonic GH5 starts shipping in 3 days. How's the 180fps slow-mo quality?
Add to the things that Sony would also need to include to be competitive with the GH5 are much improved color 'science', EVFs that don't dim when shooting 4K, LCD screens that swing out & pivot, and an IBIS that's actually effective. Their current iteration is really poor.

So the interesting thing is their review, was that by using the appropriate AF settings, they claimed they were able to cut their out-of-focus shots by 1/2. They went from a 60% hit rate at the default setting to an 85% hit rate with their revised settings. Of course since they tend not to be 'videocentric' I didn't see anything really relating to video...unless I missed it.

    Hehe.
I seem to remember when the honesty doesn't work in their favour they just leave the glaring flaws out of reviews entirely
And they have so many relationships with so many PR and marketing people at the manufacturers, you can never be honest while you're constantly looking over your back at a bunch of friends imploring you to be as nice publicly to them as you are face to face at trade shows.
I know how this works, I have felt the same thing myself.
It's not a pressure or a strict form of censorship - it's more about just common politeness and a good career move.
But it makes for a bloody boring website, believe me.
And they get very highly rewarded financially too, so they're hardly a charity. What do they want? Reader donations on top of their latest $40,000 commercial video work?
$2000, a 6K H.265 mode, anamorphic support and much better low light performance than the GH4.
Yet they didn't mention any of that.
Far worse though is they chose to make a small flaw HEADLINE news - a ridiculous click bate headline out of a tiny flaw in compression... then to imply the 10bit implementation was faulty and V-LOG completely useable for serious work, which we all know is bullshit, was the final straw for me.
BULLLLLLLLsheeet. Panasonic loaned them the GH5!
    I have some suggestions!

Some things to know about this -
Panasonic understandably were not happy with the flawed test.
C5D - "We have decided to temporarily remove this content while awaiting further feedback from the manufacturer."

Rediculously Seb is still blaming the removal of the test on "agitation from the community" rather than plainly putting his hands up and saying "we got it wrong", which I for one would have welcomed.
Full statement: "Due to the agitated discussion and hostility arising from our test of the Panasonic GH5, and our commitment to re-evaluating our test methodology based on reader comments, we have decided to temporarily remove this content while awaiting further feedback from the manufacturer. We value feedback from our audience, and our common goal is to find the most affordable and portable cinema tools out there."
Forgive me for thinking C5D's goal was to blog about professional gear, all $6000+

I'm 42. In high school computer classes involved typing and running some DOS program. I think I had my first legal drink before I ever sent an email. I remember the days when I would yell at my brother to get off the phone because I was hoping some girl was going to call... she never did. Lol. Well she probably did but gave up because of the busy signal. Hell I remember when call waiting was the newest technology that I had to explain to my parents when they kept asking why the phone kept beeping at them. Lol.

    That article wasn't a review.
It was more of a news announcement and an opinion piece.
As far as EVFs go it's best in class. That is a fact! Nothing controversial about that.
Zacuto never gave me a loan unit. Count the number of Zacuto articles on EOSHD - what is it - something like 1 or 2 in 5 years.
    Hardly shill like behaviour.
And for internal recording I'd much prefer to use the Zacuto Eye on a small camera than a whopping big field monitor.
The SDI input isn't a problem. You can get tiny HDMI to SDI converters for $70.
    Blackmagic do one.
    https://www.bpm-media.de/Studiotechnik/Konverter/Mini-Konverter/HDMI-=/X/Blackmagic-Design-Micro-Converter-HDMI-to-SDI::372209.html?language=de&gclid=CLa706XAztICFQIL0wodRvkFEg
The irony is you critisise me for criticising C5D then call me a shill! But I'm willing to let it go as you were a great mod over at the Cinema 5D forums... You put a lot of passion into that place. Surely, were you not just a bit pissed off at Seb and Nino when they decided to offload the entire forum to Planet5D on the condition the idiot over there would monetise it?
That community sold into the gutter for a penny.
And I would never sell my members to anyone - they are not mine to sell.
Like I say, you can use the Zacuto Eye on DSLRs with a $70 HDMI -> SDI
I don't know why Seb thought he could trade people's forum activity for money... That's the crux of that little matter.
Yes I do have a chip on my shoulder but in this instance mainly because they slated the GH5 without understanding the technical reasons behind the macro blocking in 10bit.
Yet they are in direct contact with Panasonic about this and leading them down the garden path to announcements, firmware updates and god knows what else.
    Quality feedback is extremely important.
I advised Panasonic not to put a statement out about it because it would only draw attention to a negative from a flawed test, which basically claimed the GH5 was unusable for professional work, when the truth is the opposite and it is actually an incredible piece of engineering with a few normal compression artefacts in VLOG if you grade it wrong.
    Facts bro.
If you need the broader picture about my supposed 'chip on shoulder' then you need to consider the full history of what Cinema5D has done for the DSLR video community. Here's a brief outline -
    1. Nino and the other Seb plucked out of obscurity by Philip Bloom to intern on the infamous Red Tails shoot. Nino and Phil have remained friends
    2. The point being he did not get noticed out of the quality of his work, rather by association with who he knew.
    3. Cinema5D started with Jared Abrams in L.A. covering DSLR video, hence "5D" in the domain name
    4. Nino instigated the shift to professional cameras and a professional standpoint on everything, completely jettisoning the fun aspect and alienating enthusiasts, as well as damaging the democratic aspect of the whole community at that time. Meanwhile Jared was dumped out in the cold.
    5. Nino gives seminars and talks for money at trade shows every year and has been at almost every one I've ever been to in some kind of manufacturer or dealer sponsored capacity... BVE, Photokina, etc. Nothing wrong with making a living of course but to then turn around and claim you're giving unbiased advice on Cinema5D is a bit rich in my view. You can't do both.
    6. The forum was offloaded to Mitch at Planet5D, the most clickbate resource in the whole community, he of course made a huge fuck up and it haemorrhaged users. Seb I believe did this because he couldn't be bothered to maintain it despite the fact he had a team of mods to help him, and he wanted to off load it for cash. Disgusting.
    7. The general content there is just so bland. Yet because of all their manufacturer associations it floats the public's attention like sponsored content.
    8. Even during the years when we were on good terms, in the past Cinema5D rarely if ever mentioned my articles in their coverage... mean spirited.
    9. Rather they saw me as a bitter rival to be crushed.
    10. Way before my first ever article criticising their actions, they have been extremely rude to me behind closed doors... dismissive and argumentative.

Yes...the skin tones on the James Miller footage are beautiful!...add to that overall image quality...stabilization....the controlled rack focus feature (no small thing by itself!) plus a ridiculously long list of additional  features, and this camera becomes an easy choice...simply nothing approaching it even remotely, within a few thousand $'s in IMO...glad Panny takes their time with the GH releases and just keeps upping the standards that other companies then play catch-up to!

Just did a search on Vimeo. Thanks. Found some great footage by James Miller. Anyone who say this camera is "unusable" needs to shoot something other than tests. The IQ IMO stomps on my A7s II in terms of color space. In fact, it gets a depth I don't see on the FS5/7. I'm torn. I plan on selling my A7s II in the coming weeks to help finance either a BMC UMP or GH5. Both have their up and downsides. But lately, I've been going smaller and more discreet so I'm leaning towards the GH5. With a speed booster - outstanding.

Next part of the Slashcam review, testing 8bit vs 10bit and V-Log L.
    Summary:
They say there is some issues how NLEs interpret the white point and black point of the footage
In Premiere Pro CC neither 8bit nor 10bit fit to the whitepaper from Panasonic.
In Media Player Classic - Home Cinema the files look exactly the same
In Davinci Resolve under OSX the files are different again, even in comparison to Premiere Pro on Windows
In FinalCut X the files are practically identical but they can't really judge the white and black point because it gives % instead of values Latitude for grading with V Log is, as expected, better with the 10bit material than the 8bit. A lot less posterization when bending the image. They think both Adobe and Blackmagic have to fix compatibility within their software to really make the most out of the footage and be able to actually judge the 10bit V Log of the GH5

Call me naive, but I think his explanation was perfectly plausible and made sense. I harken back to my NX1 days. I loved the camera's output but hated being locked into editing solutions that were not of my choice. At the time I was using Edius Pro and it would not take H265. Transcoding was a PIA, so I had to use a very simple program that didn't being to have the capabilities of Edius.
Now that I'm using FCP, I'd be faced with the same dilemma, switch to an editing program not of my choice that does accept H265, or transcode. So I'm actually glad Panasonic stuck with 264 at this point.

If you accuse Panasonic of greed, then you most certainly have to accuse Sony of greed. At least Panasonic will have some degree of H265 implementation in the GH5. With Sony, H265 utilization is totally absent.

Yes pity he can't time travel a month into the future to answer flawed test outcomes, which blame 10bit for compression artefacts. Must work harder Panasonic And give us 960fps 8K in a firmware update whilst you're at it.
By the way my GH5 is pre-ordered and should arrive on the 20th March in the UK.
So expect some decent coverage finally

Just looked at Martin Walgren's footage of his short Film Winters grip...this footage looks as good as anything I see from top cinema  cameras...thought I'd just toss in my totally subjective little "review" of a properly filmed Gh5... my review also maybe has a place in this thread, as it seems it' easily as subjective, as the one Cinema5D did. I did not blow anything up to 400 percent, as I will not be using the camera in the way, cine5D  seems to be intent on. The images  I wanted to see were right in front of me and in normal aspect completely satisfied my needs...amazing stabilization...flawless functioning, in obviously freezing temperatures, and I hope the clip I watched was shot on Leica 12-69....just confirmed in the comment section....so my conclusion...if you want a stunning image that grades well...shoots well, under trying conditions and a system that's extremly robust, the GH5 is the right camera for you!....if you want to use a camera the way cine5D does....perhaps I'd recommend the Canon C700...it little bit more expensive!!!...but when you blow it up 400 percent, the C700 really come into it's own!!!

AF is snappy enough. Watch when the dancer ducks below frame and pops back up. Focus shifts to the background and then back to her quite quickly. Towards the end the movement increases and she gets closer to the camera.
Rather than having AF constantly on, which I can't really envisage using, I presume there's some function whereby you can press a button to search for AF, and once you hit it you let it go and AF stops? And does touchscreen AF work like this?

I hope the GH5 can make it's photo and video look organic or video like. Like Ken and other say both have their uses!
It would be nice to dial in any look one likes in camera, and shoot as you envision it right on the SD card, for a fast workflow. Custom LUT profile!
For the times I want flexibility, I want a clean robust raw recording to massage and tune later on. My question is, will the GH5 offer a more clean, flexible and robust recording then the GH4?
To measure this I think an external recorder and RAW is needed to really see what comes out of the HDMI, which I assume will offer the highest bitrate 10 bit data signal.
For the run and gunner in me I also like to know how good the 10 bit 400Mb files are, the highest quality internal recording setting.
Recording the best signal goes together with the best settings. Lenses and light are also key, so comparing to other brands should ideally be done using the same glass for comparing colour rendition for instance.
For the sharpness setting, can we have something like "Off  to 10", the minus numbers make no sense to me. Or does it actually mean blur?

This is my whole point about the Cinema5D post
They are complaining it's a bit-depth issue with 10bit when it's actually an encoder issue / compression related.
And 10bit looks pretty damned good in the standard colour modes to my eye, yet they claim overall it gives zero benefit. Go figure.

Indeed, for web delivery all this testing is pretty much nonsensical.  In fact I find the whole idea of these tests zoomed in by 400% or whatever a bit absurd as well.
