I'm not across the details of the S5 vs S5ii, but as a general rule I think you should only upgrade equipment when the upgrade will fix an issue that you routinely have when using your existing equipment, or it would increase the quality of your output in some way that matters to you (e.g. can you charge more, or get the same result in less time, etc).
This philosophy helps cut out the temptation to upgrade because the grass seems greener, the manufacturers marketing looked enticing, or you are playing 'what if', which are all normal human reactions and completely understandable, but don't actually help in being more effective/efficient.

Oh yes, forgot about the SSD... 🤪
And what it came down to in the end for me was I only wanted the S5iix over the standard 5ii for personal aesthetic reasons, otherwise it doesn't offer a me a single thing I want or need.
I'd add a Q3 into that numberbet soup. And surely, an X2D100C should be added into that mix? Not for it's video capabilities of course, because it has precisely zero, but just because it is an image making beast.
But I am honestly honestly honestly happy with my body and lens line up now.
It took some sorting out along with shooting modes and all manner of factors, but I have the whole kit and caboodle now nailed down from shooting through edit to delivery.
Until anything future L Mount appears in the wild whether it be Lumix, Leica or Sigma...
But even then, it will need to be something pretty special as there is currently nada on my shopping list in terms of needs or requirements.
Well, except for I'd still like Sigma to make me a constant aperture f2.8 50-150mm or even just a Contemporary version of the 70-200mm f2.8.
Otherwise spent up and done for '23!

The recording to SSD and ProRes of the S5iiX (with a minor mention of the connect to phone for streaming) are big differences that might persuade me if I was looking to buy an S5ii.
Not that I am of course as I'm completely adamant that I'm not interested as I am dead set on a Z9/Z8/A1/X-H2S purchase next week.
    Absolutely nailed on.
Not going to waver in the slightest.
    Honestly.

    It's really good.
Despite being in a PAL region, I've switched over to shooting 6k 30p and 4k 60p and my second S5ii paired with the 16-28 is set to shoot exclusively 4k 60p so will be that 24-42mm equivalent. Which is great as the '24' for me, is for dancing stuff and the '42' is for everything else which = entrances, exits, gimbal couple stuff. So I only think of it as being a 24 or a 42.
The other two cameras and lenses are set up as 6k 30p exclusively, so their respective lenses to me, photo or video, are what they are supposed to be, ie, 28, 70 and 200. I don't shoot anything in between, just the extreme ends of any/all zooms, ie, single lens, but 'twin prime' set up.

In other news, after cancelling my pair of S5iix preorders, I made a final (honest guv) decision re. final 2023 line up…and just ordered another (used) vanilla S5ii.
So cracked my 3 camera, no lens change matrix:
    S5ii + Sigma 16-28 f2.8
    S5ii + Sigma 28-70 f2.8
    S1H + Lumix 70-200 f4
Happy with that. And getting my black Sharpie out tomorrow 😬

Yep, tried the magnetic ones a while back and just nope. They are too prone to getting knocked off unnoticed!

Just to add, I’m doing a small hybrid wedding today, S5 photos and S5mk2 for video. I think eventually I will buy a second hand GX80 with a 12mm for a general 4k lock off ceremony cam which is small  to carry.
I am going to invest in those flip up filter things. I have the Xuma magnetic things which work fine with one camera but now I have a harness with 2 cams the VND has been knocked off a couple of times as it hung by my side!

I used to work out of my little Mazda Bongo camper a lot back in the day.
Same logic regarding the savings and convenience particularly when I had to cover games late at night or be at pressers first thing in the morning.
Great to use it as a mobile office as well to file from too.
The biggest cost savings were covering long multi day events away such as football tournaments and particularly like here when shooting the Tour de France.
Using the camper saved me a lot and meant I could ram it full of boxes gear as well as utilise it as a mounting point for remote cameras !

Its got me quite nostalgic for covering the Tour again to be honest, although these days it would be far more lucrative shooting it as a vanlife vlog than it would as an editorial photographer.

Well there used to be a company who I think set up on Kickstarter whose name I do not remember, but I don’t think they are still around as cheap Chinese knock offs probably put them out of business.
So I bought a cheap Chinese knock off from China!
I just Googled ‘side hinge filter adapter’ or something…

The AF is plenty fast enough for my needs with the S1R but yes, size & weight are one of the 3-3.5k trade offs at this time!
I’d rather not stick with the S1R’s after this year though as although they are extremely capable, I don’t like them like I do my S5ii and I don’t love them like my S1H.
As I said above, I’m back on that fence waiting to see if there will be a ‘S2R’ and a ‘S2H’ and if so, what are they, and then decide.
I know that if I’d gone all S5 at this time, old Pannyboy would bring out some new gems and I’d wish I’d waited and because I don’t ‘need’ to do anything at this time, I bought myself a Smallrig cage, matte box lite and side handle for the S5ii as it will be my principle video unit for 2023, so giving it some love 😉

I've had my eye on getting that for a while.
Unfortunately, I need a bit more capacity for all the shit I've accumulated that I can't let go of so this would have to be me dragging my suitably sized cart to a gig.

Not connected with anything above, I just cancelled my preorders for BOTH S5iiX's.
Nothing to do with the camera per se, but I came to the conclusion that if I was going to be shooting 6k 30p 3:2 on the the things, then why not just stick with the S1R's which do 10 bit 5k 30p 3:2?
OK, they crop pixel:pixel but that does not bother me and OK, they don't shoot log either, but they produce a really nice clean result in the Flat profile that I am used to working with.
AF not needed as I have the S5ii for that.
So why spend approx 3000-3500 euros to change?
Well I decided it wasn't worth it and actually I gain/retain the 47mp S1R stills capability so that's something.
I'm just going to carry on with what I have the rest of this year and wait until there is any sign of an S1R and an S1H replacement and then make any future decisions.
So it's back to a pair of S1R's for hybrid on me at all times plus the S5ii purely video on gimbal/tripod for entrances, exits, couple and static stuff with the S1H purely video on tripod for just ceremonies and speeches, ie, most of the day I'll only be working with 2 units, occasionally 3 and at certain times, 4, but then 2 will be static at that point so other than the set up and switching them on, 2 really.
I just bought (for 70 euros!!) however, a 4 wheel cart with a handle that I can load all my gear into straight out of the back of my camper/motorhome when at gigs and just trawl the whole lot in; tripods, light stands, light, power bank, extension cables, camera, - the lot...in one single trip. Saves 3-4 trips! Now that IS a worthwhile purchase. Especially as I have gone all in on my lighting now.

Interesting, but I’m not noticing any of this stuff…
Either I’m not looking hard enough or it’s a non-issue. For me. Or I need my eyes testing…
6k 30p full frame 3:2 and 4k 60p 16:9 cropped, shooting LGOP, in camera, log with baked in Gamut V2 lut plus either 2-5 stop or 6-9 stop Freewell VND in 1/8th mist or after dark, just a 1/8th mist.
Single S5ii while I wait for my X to arrive.
And even then, by the time I have added my crappy grade and it’s been uploaded t’internet and the client watches it on their phone…
But seriously, as above, maybe I am not being critical enough but I’m not seeing it…probably because I’m not looking for it.

I just sold my S1 and have bought a S5mk2 with a Sigma 28-70 f2.8. They have them as a pack here in Spain for 2590€. Pretty happy with the deal. Only had time to set up the camera a check a few things. But there are 2 things that I think I'm really going to like, the ability to punch in and check focus whilst filming and the EVF, which isn't as good as the S1's but it's way better than the S5's. I'll have to learn how to use the AF but so far it look pretty good. The lens looks great, nice and compact. I can see it being my main lens. If also means my back pack will weigh less as I'll use the 24-105 less and the S5 is a lot lighter than the S1. All good so far!
