  1. This was a fun one to make. The Poags Hole hillclimb is one of the premier moto hillclimb events and considered one of the hardest hills in the series. Shot this with a gh5 and soligor 135mm mostly, went for very 80's tv / VHS aesthetics. Enjoy

     

  2. Was able to do some testing this week on the little Iscomorphot:

    So far my Contax/zeiss 50mm1.7 is the best match for this lens. You really need to stop to f5.6 to get sharpness from this setup, which is going to mean bumping up my iso on the gh5. Less than desirable, but I think I can make it work for the wedding I'm shooting at the end of the month. Interestingly, I tried adapting the Iscomorphot to my SLR Magic 50mm .95. This lens really makes the Isco shine, I even got center sharpness at f2! However unfortunately anything below f4 introduces quite heavy vignetting, I believe this is because the filter thread on the slr magic is a massive 62mm compared to the 39mm Isco rear thread.

     

  3. Hey everyone, just picked up a little Iscomorphot 1.5/8 anamorphic adapter, planning on using it to film a wedding later this month. I'm starting to do some tests to see what kind of look I can get from this thing and I'm trying to find a good taking lens (shooting with a GH5) So far I've put it on my Nikon 50mm F2, not too happy with the quality of the pair. I have a Contax 50mm 1.7 and a canon FD 50 1.4, both of those are 55mm front thread so until a step-down ring comes in the mail I wanted to see if anyone else has experience with this tiny anamorphic scope. Just as a test, I attached it to an Olympus 12mm, and though it vignetted heavily, with the ETC crop it was noticeably sharper than the Nikon on the center. Same result with my SLR Magic 25mm, it was a little wide for the scope but I was able to see better quality images. 

    Second, I'm wondering if this lens could benefit from a slight calibration, though I've only seen posts of this being done to some of the larger Kowa and sankor anamorphic. I have already found that I need my taking lens to be backed off from infinity to get good infinity focus. Anyone done any work on these? The grease in the lens is very stiff so I may be pulling it apart soon at least for that. 

    Got a busy work week but I may be able to shoot a little with it and post something.

    I don't know if it's because of the unique event, location, live sound, good compositions or what else, but at least half of the shots definitely look like out of some car racing movie. Very nice :)

    I see you've shared the lenses used, but what about picture profiles and your grading settings?

    I’ve always wanted to film a racing movie, I guess you could say i’m practicing. For profiles I think the Gh5 was set to the natural profile and then I used a combination of filmconvert and a couple little exposure and color tweaks per shot

    The damn shifter handle was about 3 inches long LoL, and the gate was about 2 inches long, and hell it was double clutch up and down, matching RPM's. Jesus LoL. Try doing that going into a hairpin turn at 180 mph! I Never got comfortable with it and the brakes were so Damn good they would upset the geometry if you stabbed them, and then you were swerving like hell..It was a Hairy ass ride I can tell you that.

    you had to double clutch on the way up too? what a handful and with all that power

I dove a Formula V racer for a bit. I sucked at it LoL. I was better turning wrenches on them than driving one. :blush:  Went all over the US for races with them. We won the Central Division once with the D sports racer in 1972 I think it was. That stuff was a Lot of fun, but damn time consuming getting them ready to race, and driving there and back.

    I don't know if any of you watch that show "Chasing Classic Cars", but the old guy, my age LoL, he Might be a bit older, the mechanic Richard on it, was a Unbelievable Formula V driver at the same time I was in it with SCCA. He was just about unbeatable. But he was a super nice guy, helped anyone that needed it. I think he drove a formula B Brabham  BT16 a few times also? I would have killed for that race car LoL. It would have killed me I guess!  :grimace:

    My best friend and I used to race enduro Go Karts, they were fast as hell. I have a single engine that would do 120 mph on the straights, he had a twin engine one that would do 150 mph! , and he bought a Gurney Formula A race car, # 001, the first one ,Gurney Eagle Formula A, he Ever made. It had a Chevy 302 with Hilborn Injection on it. We drove from Ohio to California to pick it up. It was used, well used LoL but a beautiful car, Red as hell, it was blue and white to start with. I dove it a few times and it was scary as hell. We had it a few times up to 180 mph. He was a Lot better at it than I was was so he drove thank God! Crazy times. He was 4 years younger than I am, and just died of Cancer a few years ago. Scary stuff Cancer.

    The car looked pretty much like this one. Hell could even be it for all I know?  Sure looks the same other than the color.  It had side Pods on it when we bought it. Had to, due to rules changes. Before he bought it it had been wrecked at Laguna Seca and ended up in a Tree!! It had been repaired before we bought it and raced after. We talked to Dan Gurney a bunch of times on the phone. He was a damn nice guy.

    Wow what I would do to drive one of those! You put it wel though: kill to drive one, but it may kill you! Thanks for sharing your story, if you ever come up to watkins let me know! I’ll be going to the 6 hour race, nascar, and vintage GP this year

    same here man I let those idle shots just roll :) this whole video was shot with a rode videomic pro, but not stereo, its a mono shotgun.

    How do you approach your talents?

    Do you ask them to prepare some kind of 'speech' and then record it or is it more like an interview?

    Hey, thanks for watching! Now that we have a couple of these made we can show the artists to give them an idea for what we do, and schedule a time to film. Right now we're just trying to grow the channel and develop early content for the collective so short and sweet is the name of the game. I film the artist working on something and get a feel for how they react to the camera, then we do a quick interview and I pick out some points for the video.I try to keep the interviews short seeing as I'm shooting for about 2-5 min. final.

    For feedback I'd say this: the jump cut at 2:40 was my favorite part and I think that cut hinted at connecting the separate places Filips is exploring in a really effective way. You did a couple examples of cutting on matching action throughout the film (mostly putting wood in and out of the car and chopping) but I think you could push more of these cuts like the one of him jumping. I think that told the story best. Keep it up.

  10. Hey Eoshd, posted a couple months ago of a new web series on working artists I created with my friends at the UUU Art Collective. Our original chosen name was ART:WORKS which we really loved, however due to similarities with a local series called ART/WORK we decided to rebrand. We only lost a couple hundred views so in the grand scheme of things no big deal. So i'd like to share the first 3 episodes of our new series: WORK.

  11. I'd echo the other guys and say full Manual. It seems like more work at first but in the long run it becomes less work for you. Histograms and zebras will help you know exactly where you are with your EV so yes learning those is super helpful. If your camera has any programmable Custom settings I say use those too. Thats my first step on any shoot is to get my exposure for a location locked onto C1. Then any alternate environment that demands significant exposure change goes on C2. For example if I was filming in a restaurant the dining room and kitchen are very different in terms of lighting and exposure, so I will set my kitchen exposure to C1 and dining room to C2. You can then move very quickly between the two. 

  12. I have been working on a lot of projects lately that all seem to get worked on but none are finished, and as some of you probably know that can be frustrating. Its super important to me to just close the laptop and go out and shoot something purely for fun, so when a buddy of mine said come play with your drone while we snowboard in a parking lot I said YES. So here's that footage. Felt so good! I could use the drone practice anyway, planning on doing my 107 cert this year

     

  13. I recently began running the instagram account @uuuartcollective and the team and I are launching a new short video series profiling working artists. Here's the first in the series. We'll have a new video each week for the foreseeable future. 

    Tech specs: Shot on a gh5 with an sir magic 25mm .95, graded with film convert. This has been my go-to lens lately, I am loving the look so much I may buy the 17.5 after the next couple of gigs go through.

  14. Hey guys, just downloaded the new firmware to my GH5. I'm just happy about the 2.35:1 crop marks really but I realized you guys may have some questions or things you'd like to see tested. I hope to go out and shoot for fun next week sometime, what are things you guys want to see/know about?

  15. Welcome to market segmentation. Its a strategy companies use to effectively sell their products in different markets. However, technological advancements can be on their own timeline, and you are seeing newer parts being used first in different market segments. Whatever team developed the GH5 did their research and testing, while the g85 or whatever was developed for a different market. Of course the cameras may be theoretically capable of performing better but that product and camera line is designed and marketed for a different segment. So they get one camera doing the features that are sellable to its desired market, and sell it there. Same reason you can get more horsepower out of a car just by telling the ECU to run differently.

  16. So many people vlogging nowadays and using their own voice in their films. Its very personal and I love watching it.. but I've never done it myself! I film a web series with my good friend Sean who is a very talented chef. He usually does any VO or narration. So here's our latest episode and a bit of a new thing for us, we go down a street in Rochester NY and take you to all of our favorite spots to eat and get groceries. We had some fun and it feels good to inject a little of your own personality into your content. Not vlogging yet.. but a step closer. Enjoy

    please! It's very irritating filming at air shows when a Spitfire does a fast low flypast and the stupid commentator talks through the

    public announcement system the whole time   ,along the lines "a Spitfire has two wheels at the front and a small one at the rear'.

    Aussie  I plan on making a longer edit for car people with only engine noise (Its music to my ears too)
